HTC EVO External Mic - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering if anyone has tried any external Microphones (connected to the Headphone jack) on the HTC EVO to get better sound quality on Video recording? I have found a few external microphones that I was thinking about trying but before investing in that, thought I would ask the group. Below are some links to some Microphones I thought about trying. As I cannot add links yet I have broken it up below.

Thank you for your assistance.

Uuuhh...it's a headphone jack, not a microphone jack. In other words, output not input. Where's my face palm pic at?

Oh jeez, you should find that pic and take a real good look at it.

Evo External MIC
So it is not set up for wired headsets which would have a MIC. I would think that this would be standard in all phones for people that don't want bluetooth....

Wired Headset
According to this site there is 3.5mm wired headsets for the EVO.

Yes it does, sombdy just wanted to try and be a jackass to someone to make his day better.

It is set up for wired mic headset, don't know if when recording video if it would use that input or not, worth trying though.

Thank you for the response. I knew the answer about the headset just was being facetious, and the next post was to prove it. I was just wondering if anyone has tried it yet.
I know there has been a few breakdowns of the EVO, Has anyone come up with the wireing schematic for the EVO yet, to see what type of jack it is and what Pins are actually connected to that jack?
Thanks again.

It can take a standard headphone OR headphone/mic combo. Maybe a DIY super microphone? Use the standard headphone/mic cable and add a amplified omni directional mic?

I use a wired headphone/mic combo that I got with an old blackberry and the mic works fine on that

I believe RadioShack has splitters that will let you plug a regular mic into the headset jack.

Wired Headsets?

Has anyone had any issues with wired headsets? Which model is working the best? I know a friend that has gone through 2 of them already and said that he couldn't answer phone calls, and the mic didn't work.
Bose in-ear, inline-mic headset
Sounded amazing on my ipod and Dinc, and now on my Tbolt =D

No it does not use bluetooth, we are talking about wired headsets.
RF3 and airtube
As a side note, has anyone ever tried the RF3 Airtube headsets? I think Life Blue Tube and ENVi are the two brands. They are supposed to reduce radiation, but I can't really find a review anywhere, to see if they actually work as headsets.
I have a pair of Apple hands free cord headset that I use to use with my DInc with no problems, but they won't work with the TBolt...people on the other end can't hear me. Somebody please help or recommend a good pair that does work. Thanks

I have a pair of sennheiser ie8i and klipsch 10xi, which the mic worked fine on my evo. now neither mic wants to work on the my thunderbolt. Does anybody know what they changed? The little icon comes on that shows the microphone but they don't work.
I got the same issue with my Monster Turbine with Control Talk. No mic, but they worked great on my Dinc.
Need to find something too, but leaning towards the Bose.
I have used the nexus s headset with no problem.

HTC in their infinite wisdom disabled the microphones if anything is plugged into the headphone jack, this is the first time they have done this. I hope a developer can pull the right code from another HTC phone to get this to work.
This is a $10 solution, just picked mine up today and works perfectly: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dynex&#...218120537083&skuId=9535327&st=DYNEX&cp=1&lp=1

trying this... Hopefully work, love the sound of my monster turbines...
I had to use an old shure cable that has a built in mic and button to get it to work, strange thing is the connectors are exactly the same the only difference is my headphone have the extra volume button and the shure doesn't.
I just get cheap $10 earphones, cause im so ruff on them. I tend to tear them up alot or wash them in the washing machine sometime too
I just use a set of Ozone "noise cancelling" headphones with a Mic built in. I am not a fan of how it feels in my ear but the Mic works and is clear. Only thing is it seems flimsy and its 20 bucks at best buy.

Arc Earphones

Just wondering if the in ear headset that comes with the phone is any good?
It looked plain in the unboxing videos, so what's the sound like?
Could someone take a close up picture of theirs or link me to the exact headset?
Thanks
Compared to other out of the box headsets its one of the best ive had, decent bass, crisp. All the SE phones ive had have always come with a decent headset. I can only use the type that push into your ears so that was another plus.
Does it have a remote for changing songs and stuff or is it only a mic?
A link to the headset would be appreciated
No controls, thats the downside to it. Only a mic and call answer button. I use my liveview as the controls though
Yeah I wanted to get liveview since there's no control.
Is it worth it? Any downsides to liveview?
I'd only use it for changing songs, messages and incoming calls. What you reckon?

Try Headset Button Controller Trial from android market
it allows you to 2 presses to skip track , 3 presses to go back etc.
long press to increase volume
Swap my mm70 earbuds with the arc stock with a bit of soldering. Check out youtube.
Now i am happy with the headphone

I've tried my beats with controltalk with this phone and the sound is all garbled up.
Anyone else experience that with other headsets?
The ones that come stock are ok. but I miss my ability to control songs (fast forward, rewind, volume up/down) that I had with my iPhone 4.

I've heard of a few people who complain of garbled sound with non SE headphones in Arc/Play.
I have been using beats dr dre tour on my Play with out an issue though. Seems very hit or miss on if they work or not.

That's really an awesome app. Works brilliant. I think you have to buy it, though. At least it started annoying me with some "your trial has expired" messages.
Stock earphones are quite good, though they look/feel really cheap. ^^
They look pretty much like SE MH710 on the pictures, but I'm not sure if they are the same.
The arc stupidly reverse the ground and mic wiring thats why other headsets dont work on it. Try to hold the mic button down you will get nice sound.

Just tried that and you are right! How the heck do we fix that?
Is there something I can buy or a software hack that can fix it?

Wow! So THIS is why I haven't been able to use other headsets! That is very sneaky of SE.. I hope this is a software issue rather than intentional to force users to only buy SE headsets
My old Android phone also had this problem so I do not think it is a SE issue...
(Motorola Backflip)
It seems with the 2.3.3 update they don't even let you use these "incompatible" headsets, it just displays "Accessory not supported".
I used samsung and motorola headsets with no problem.

there HAS to be a fix for this! i cant stand the headset that comes with it, i hate those in ear noise cancelling things, make my ears feel weird! lol
but seriously, im having to use a normal pair of earphones with no control because of this issue, i have a liveview for controls but thats not always practical (dissconection issues/battery life/running the risk of smashing it to pieces when im skating!)
i have a set of iphone headphones i really wanted to use but because of this ****ty issue i cant. is there a way we could easily modify the headset and reverse the wiring in them ourselves?
We can use normal earphones ? If so, I'm not overly concerned.

Yes anything with a regular 2 channel 3.5mm Jack (headphones/speakers) work fine. I would have taken the phone back if this problem effected normal jacks too as I plug my phone into car stereos and portable speakers, but I'm still pissed off I can't use anything with an inline remote

Why don't you use stereo bluetooth hedset MW600. 3.5 mm jack on them is compatible with all wired headphones unlike 3.5 mm jack on arc and portable speakers.

Mobile Solution w/ Epic?

Thinking about making my mobile experience consolidated. I want a descent mount, power and audio for my epic.
How about this for power:
http://www.amazon.com/Mini-Power-Ca...VZ5E/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1317670360&sr=8-9
This for a mount (first option is cheaper with above power and doesn't cover buttons):
http://www.proclipusa.com/default.a...d=&parent_category=4&d_pcat=13451&d_cat=18521
As far as audio, I don't have an aux in for my radio. I can get it with a few different mods that have provide aux input and/or bluetooth pairing to phone. I'm thinking life would be easier with a hardwire to the headphone port. My Sirius/Pandora would still stop if I had a incomming call. But does the mic on the phone work if there is something plugged into the speaker jack? Is there a way to rig something to the phone jack that inclues a mic (kinda like the earbuds that came with our epics)?
I looked at some expensive options that have bluetooth displays and onboard sync to phone contacts? Why bother.. we already have a great display and easy acces to contact?
Would this work?
http://www.amazon.com/Cellet-3-5mm-...S1QI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1317671877&sr=8-1
Just don't even know if it'd be necessary.

External Microphone for Video recording.

I searched through the forums and found some posts that said in order to use your external Mic you need a Y adapter. And that it doesn't support stereo, and some other issues.
Can someone link me to a Y adapter that would work along with a good value microphone that I can use during video recording on my Galaxy S III?
I'm surprised that a company hasn't made a product for this yet where you just plug it in and it works. The camera and video quality are great, but the sound is lacking greatly.
You can also get an OTG cable then you can use the yeti and have digital hd stereo

If I find a mic with a 3.5mm jack can't I just plug it in? the ear buds that come with the phone have a microphone where the volume controls are and it picks up sound during video recording.

the headphone jack can only output a limited amount of power to drive a mic device, any non mobile mic is not going work. if you want high quality sound you must do so with the usb using either an external usb soundcard with analog 3.5mm inputs or just a usb mic like the yeti which is the best you can really get. and yes s3 has native support for almost any kind of usb device so it will work like if you plug in usbdevices to your desktop/laptop as long as it is Plug and play compatible. whether there are good apps for these usage scenarios though is another story.
oh and you are welcome...

Good info, thanks. Looked up the yeti mic you mentioned, but it's kinda pricey at $109 and not exactly portable either. Do you use it?
(EDIT: too bad most jack mics suck)

I was looking at these earlier and thought about getting the edutige http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004XC6KHS/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER. A few of the reviews mention it working with a couple of android phones. Only issue is it seems to pick up alot of background noise. If anyone decides to get this for their s3 please tell us how it performs.
Not really sure what you want a dedicated microphone for taking videos on a cell phone. If you are looking to make quality videos, you might as well get a decent external microphone and syncing up audio in post production. I know my brother uses this in conjunction with a 60D. Will probably sound a lot better than the $30 options posted above. http://www.amazon.com/Zoom-H1-Portable-Digital-Recorder/dp/B003QKBVYK/ref=pd_cp_MI_0
I want to record videos with decent sound quality at concerts, etc.. I don't want distorted bass and good audio picture. Recommend me ext. microphone for my SGS3, thanks!

Bluetooth adapter that makes use of inline mic

So now that we've courageously broken free of the burdensome shackles of the 3.5mm jack I guess we got to make the move to bluetooth. Every adapter I see seems to have an inbuilt microphone and none of them make use of the inline mic that many headphones come with does anyone know of any adapter that doesn't need to be dug out of a pocket to reply to a call?
PS: before anyone mentions the Sound Blaster E3 yes it has a mic input but only if you split the jack into separate mic/earphone jacks and only when connected to a pc via USB. I've asked elsewhere and this has come up once or twice.

I have not seen any of those that have inline mics with a single 3.5mm.

There are good number of bluetooth headsets with mics that you get for the same or less than the price of those. Or if you have a set of wired headsets that you're really attached too, why not just use the USB-C ->3.5mm that will be included in the box?
