[Q] HTC Desire Disk Space HELP! - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Peeps
I've been a big fan of reading these pages (I have a Moto Milestone/Droid too) and was wondering if you could please possibly help.
I have just been given a UK HTC Desire, running 2.2
One of my apps/widgets, Mini Info, tells me that the on board Disk Space is just 147 MB
I have read everywhere that the Disk Space should be around 512-576 MB so am totally puzzled.
The device is brand new, I only received it yesterday.
Any ideas where the missing disk space is folks?
Thanks so much for your help and for reading this. x

As I understand it the free space is whats left after all the Operating System, Boot Sector and Radio is written to the memory. 150Mb is about right and you will soon use it unless you flash Froyo and move your apps to the SD Card.

hello, from what I know, 512 mb is ROM and 576 mb is RAM. You can not use this as it is used for your phone to run smoothle, just like RAM and ROM in you pc, although they are much higher (1gb to 4gb+)
hope this helps, by the way, all phone specks are on hTc website...

Cheers James - really appreciate the quick response. That makes sense, so thank you.
To root, or not to root. Thing is (as you can probably tell) I'm not that techie minded - although I am an Android geek! And proudly so.

If you want a total backup and dont care about warranty then you root otherwise there is little point tbh.

you are already running froyo (2.2 as say) you can move apps that you install to the sd card as long as the app supports it.
also if you are running froyo OTA you cannot root your phone yet. there isn't a way that you can easily root it. the only way is to downgrade (search forum) or wait till someone finds an easier way to root it.

Just move some applications to the SD card and you will get some more space.

[Q] Low internal memory on htc wildfire

i have a htc wildfire which comes with a 512mb of internal memory. but as soon as i got my phone of the market, it shows only 90mb left under phone memory. i do understand that this comes from the built in phone apps, data, cache and etc. but i need an easy solution to free up the memory as it could slow down my phone. any help?
ps: my phone is on 2.2.1 froyo and hboot 1.01 so yeah i can't root it! :x
It doesn't come with 512 MB internal memory, but, with 175 MB. So, having ~100 MB on a stock phone is normal.
You are probably mixing up some other space (ROM, I think), with the internal memory.

You can look up any mobile spec listing site (Eg: GSMArena). It is clearly listed there 512 MB is the ROM Size on the Wildfire, not its internal memory.
Besides, I think the amount of internal memory can be seen under Settings also on the Stock ROM as well. (Not sure, since it has been months since I have been running the stock ROM), but, on CM7, it clearly shows Available Internal Storage and Total Internal Storage. (Which is 175MB)

yeah gsmarena shows that it has 384 MB of RAM and 512 MB of ROM. didn't say anything about internal memory. on the stock ROM it only shows the available internal storage space, nothing for total. so i couldn't figure out what was the total internal storage size..hehe
anyway thank for the info, it sure relieved me to some point guess i have to wait for the root to come. go unRevoked!
go unRevoked! +1 this
if you are not on 2.2 froyo, you can root your device with unrewoked...

WRONG.
If you are on 2.2, you probably have HBOOT 1.01 wich cant be rooted. Its about HBOOT, not android version.

[Q] Solutions for limited internal memory?

Here is the scenario. My girlfriend has a HTC Desire, which I found out recently has very limited internal storage when I checked out her phone. We have installed App2SD, and moved every allowable app to her SD card. She has deleted old apps and such, and we have cleaned up a lot of all crap on her phone. I have suggested rooting the phone, as I have done this with my Mesmerize. She is fed up with this phone, and told me last night she wants to buy another phone, and said "I really really wish I could throw this mfer out the fing window! if only I wasn't so dependent on this piece of s! It won't install new apps, and I'm constantly getting messages about being out of memory. I have a SD card that is practically fing empty".
I would like to ease her frustration and save her the money of buying a new phone since she is not eligible for a contract discount with her phone since she has quite a bit of time before renewal. Is there a way to utilize this unused space on her SD card without rooting the phone? Can we partition the SD card to recognize one of the partitions as "internal memory"? Should I just go ahead and try and root this thing for her? Other suggestions?
There's 2 things you can do without root. They will both give a bit more space.
1) upgrade to 2.3 - go to HTCdev.com, kernel source, view downloads. This is an RUU exe to run from a pc and will upgrade to gingerbread. It will wipe the phone though so may want to install mybackup from market. Gingerbread also moves the libs of apps (not all apps have libs) which Froyo did not so when you move to sd, you may claw back a bit more space
2) there is a trick that will change the default install location to sd card. This also allows most apps that previously couldn't be moved to sd, to be moved. Beware, apps that need to run in the background at start up and apps with widgets should not be moved as sd is mounted late at boot and these apps will not work properly.
There is a guide for this in my signature.
Combining these 2 things may help for a while although ultimately root is the way forward. With root, she will never worry about space again. The above is just prolonging the agony
Hope this helps

Advantages to rooting?
Besides being able to move over any app I please on my rooted phone that I have... What would be the other advantages in terms of space for her Desire?
Well we can change partition layouts, use an a2sd script to link /data/app to /sd-ext or even move the entire /data partition to /sd-ext.
Theres also a root memory faq in my signature. Read that too.

Free up space on HTC Wildfire S.

so i bought the htc wildfire s from metropcs. good phone. but the internal memory sucks. i have already s-offed it and rooted it to delete the metro bloatware to try to save some battery life and space. well it still complains about low space. so my question is, since i am rooted i can delete anything i want. what am i allowed to delete that the phone does not require to have? if that means deleting everything htc off there, i'll do that. i just want space for my texts and maybe a game or two. it's getting annoying. please and thank you. ^_^
If your phone is Rooted then install "Link2SD" from Market. Then link all your downloaded apps to SD card 2nd partition (see details here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432459)
I have 79 apps (having size of 165MB) installed on my WFS and still have approx. 80MB of free space.

actually understanding Wildifire S possibilities

Kind of newbie question, but it is not. Some time ago I asked help here because the wildfire s internal memory is not that large (150mb) and S2E was not helping.
The problem-- Internal memory cannot deal with all the apps I do use. But, if i put all the /data on sd card, this would slow down android too much.
First try-- I tried "int2ext+" that leaves /data/data on internal for speed: at first it seemed to work, but in a while the same problems occurred.
Secondo try-- So I tried the other version, "int2ext", that transfers /data/data too, but... sleepy times for my phone.
Right now, I am confused. I wonder how do you people handle this problem... Apart from buying a new phone...
May someone helps me?
Ok...

Well instead of int2ext(which F***ed my rom) flash data2sd.zip after u made the partision in CWM recovery (link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39695479#post39695479) Hope it helps
Good Luck
James
P.S: DONT FORGET TO CREATE THE PARTISION BEFORE FLASHING IT!!!
Thank you, James, I'll give a try with data2sd!
In the meantime, I'd like to understand what is occupying so much space in /data/data .
I believe All the Google Apps and other preinstalled apps that have to be fast (for example phone app, message app and so on)
I remember that MIUI HC 3.2, found on this website, was fast enough. Maybe, as tech grows, apps sets bigger data in /data/data. Anyway, I'm wondering how do you guys handle this problem. Therefore, I suppose I'm doing something wrong myself.
Anyway, this week I'm sadly free. So, I'll give a try.
Try upgrading your sd card to class 10, this will help solve your problem
Maybe is just your SD Card, I've int2ext installed (with cyanogen mod) and a class 6 card. It's a bit slow but I can use the phone with problems. Check your SD card, if there isn't any number printed on it probably you have a class2 o lower...
A good hint. My sd card is class 4, I'll try upgrading anyway. I'll let you know, guys.
Success!
I've bought a samsung SD card 8 giga and class 10. Wiped everything, partitioning, flashing rom with int2ext and... one day after, it seems it's really working: the phone is faster, more responsive.
Even thought, next time i'm buying such a mobile phone, i'll seriously care the internal memory to be larger than 2 giga.
Thank you all, guys!

[Q] Is there a stock-standard Android 2.3.3 ROM for Wildfire S?

Hi all..
You may be sick of all these "Is there x for x" typed questions.. You may hate me for it.. But this needs to be asked.
I have got a HTC Wildfire S from a mate as a gift. but the thing is, it is loaded up with the factory crap from the Australian Cell provider, Telstra. They're a good company, but the factory crap is literally, too much. I don't want 45Mb of Space free with absolutely nothing on my Droid, I would love a bit more.
I have a 4Gb MicroSD card in it, but I would love if there was a way ALL my apps I get from the Google Store installs to the SD card, and the cache data they have put across to the SD card as well. But that can happen a little later.
Is there a Stock-Standard android 2.3.3 ROM that I can flash onto my wildfire S so I can have the luxury of a Phone without the low space wizard popping up every 5 minutes?
It would be greatly appreciated.

Is your phone rooted? If so, you can delete the system apps from Telstra and HTC by using, well actually there's a lot of apps can assist you. Link 2 SD is very good for deleting system apps. You can do it manually as well, but I don't advise it in case you accidentally delete something your phone needs to function.
If it isn't rooted, well then you'll need to root it. You can't flash a ROM without root access anyway. But you don't actually need a custom ROM to remove all those apps. :highfive:
Even if you want to move the script without any app on the memory card. You must have installed android sdk and htc sync.
Connect the phone to the computer.
Windows + R, type: cmd
Here you can enter path directory platform-tools (in the android sdk) for me is this: cd C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools
Now: adb shell
And: pm setInstallLocation 2
Now reboot your phone. Mostly every app will be installed on the sd card. Please note that some applications can't be moved to the SD card, and that saves some memory applications in the phone's memory, and that memory ever end
