Moto Droid X Otterbox - Droid X Accessories

Hey all,
I know the case isnt out yet, but how long does it usually take them to release it after the phone has been released?

I could have sworn i saw somewhere that we should expect to see it by the end of august.

When you consider there is still not an otterbox for the Incredible or Desire that have been out much longer do not expect one anytime soon.

Usually about a year after the phones debut
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App

Usually a year but seidio already has a case out and extended battery. I personally like seidio over otter box.
And yes I know its not 360 protection like otter.

I dunno. The iPhone 4's case is already out, and that phone is not even close to a year old. I guess it just depends on the popularity of that particular device. Hopefully it's released soon because I work in the oil industry, and my phone is likely to see accidental abuse (if it ever ships)!

They also have cases for the Incredible, which has not been out very long.

This is the one place when talking about how many handsets of a single phone can come into play and mean something. Since the iPhone sells so many handsets they have a built in market for the product where for android our market is spread across many handsets. So if you were making a case it only makes sense to make it first and right away for the one that sells so many instead of 20 differnet ones.

One of their reps told me their "average" time to market was 2 months after release.

They are trying to get better about dates but 2 months is garbage. They still do not have a case for the Incredible, Desire or EVO all have been out over 2 months and the first two have been out 4 months.

Finally just bought regular case and a zag screen protector. Not waiting around anymore.

I don't understand how people can take such a slim and sexy phone... and then bulk it up with one of these gigantic cases...

Consider how many iPhones per day are sold versus how many Droid X devices. It's really in Otterbox's best interest to cater to the iPhone first and foremost.

The bigger, the better.

The case I have on my X atm is actually pretty slim and has saved it from being mangled twice already. Even with the case it is still just as slim as my Samsung Eternity is (my AT&T phone).

i was just on the otterbox website and they have cases available for the droid x! idk if anyone has notice that yet lol

They are good about answering questions here: http://www.facebook.com/#!/otterbox?ref=ts
Or you can go to the otterbox website and sign up to be notified when it is released.
*Edit- btw, I got tired of waiting and ordered the Seidio Rugged and have been very pleased.

do you think XDA members are also Otterbox employees? Sign up on their website and they will email you when its available. That's what I did. By this point I'll probably stick with TPU cases, way cheaper, thinner, and protected my phone perfectly when I dropped it on the pavement.
I'm using the Otterbox 1900 PDA case. Near perfect case for me. Though probably too bulky for most people.
Come on! This has been discussed. already. The answer you are looking for is "We don't know when they are coming out!"
Like someone else said, sign up on their website for email updates. The Facebook page is pretty much useless because you are going to get the same answer that everyone else is receiving.
say thank you to apple for some how getting the case quicker then the evo even though the evo was released first
more iphones than evos means more money from iphone owners than evo owners
true but i hate the iphone you can not do crap with it. only what apple allows you to do. Steve Jobs is trying to be king of the world imo
I sent them a email today telling them they are missing out because many evo owners are going someplace else for protection.
i agree they are missing out on alot of money
however i think they will come out next week or two...
I sincerely hope so, I've already completely killed my phone twice, good thing I know a few people that work at repair centers haha.

[Q] will there be active development for the S3 for 2 more years?

Here is my issue. When it comes to smartphones, I am a IOS guy from the start. I upgrade every 2 years, selling the old on craigslist which pays for the latest iPhone upgrade.
What I like is that there is active (i won't call it development but rather tweaking) in the jailbreak community for that 2 year period mainly due to the fact that all the apple devices run the same code. We all know that...
Well... frankly the iPhone5 bores me, and I think I may go android. However, some things bother me.
One is the plastic/cheap feel of the S3. Apple seems to have build quality way above and beyond the S3 here. No worries, an aluminum bumper and battery cover solves that issue for me.
More concerning is the development path for any particular android device. It seems like manufacturers stop development and release of new OS's in about a year of release which means 3rd party devs need to take the slack. I have a Asus Transformer tablet and this is exactly what happened... however I have found that dev roms are usually not full featured and buggy, especially when you want a new android build. (like going from ICS to JB for instance)
I do however tend to tweak my phones for about the first 6 months and leave them... my iPhone is still on IOS 5.0.
I'm just concerned about getting the latest code on the android since some newer apps don't work on old android. Just dont know what to do.
Any thoughts?
-J
The S3 is the best selling device Android has ever had. You have nothing to worry about. Since you've come to xda you don't have to be concerned about official updates to the firmware. The development community will be putting stuff out for this device for years to come.
The only device on Android with Apple style update support is a Nexus device. If official firmware updates are your main concern get one of those. But the current nexus is getting old. New one is expected by the end of this year.
An attempt at a fully honest reply to your concerns...
Compared to Apply devices, the S3 _is_ made with a cheaper shell and does "feel" cheaper. Not only is the shell and battery cover made of plastic, its made of super thin and flimsy plastic. If that bothers you now, the concern will only fester over time and you might be better off looking for another phone. HTC phones have a higher shell build quality. While I personally don't like the device overall (and wouldn't seriously suggest it), the take a look at the overall "outside quality" of the HTC OneX.. it just feels like it's built better (but at the expense of other things.)
What's INSIDE the phone is usually of a better quality. Having the removable battery and microSD can be a really big deal. The only two current concerns I have with the North American version of the SGS3 is that Samsung seems to be providing the wrong driver for the LED and the battery life isn't as good as the international version (when comparing the two phones on non-LTE networks.) The former should be correctable with a proper LED lib (or perhaps re-worked kernel functionality) and the latter with more tweaking.
As for updates, the North American phone is likely to be a mixed bag. Samsung usually will support their "flagship" phones (such as the original SGS3) for 2 years. However, it appears they drop support for the variants of those phones earlier. For example, the international SGS2 is better supported than the US t-mobile variant of the same. (The AT&T SGS2 is an oddity as it shares the same processor as the international version, so people port the international firmwares to the AT&T one with ease.) The North American version of the SGS3 (qualcomm S4) is a variant of the actual flagship S3 device. Will they continue to support it? It's hard to say - and adding in the fact that carriers (AT&T, etc) seem to control updates, it's possible that a carrier branded SGS3 will lose support before 2 years elapses.
All that being said, Samsung seems to be better (at least lately) with updating their devices than HTC. Motorola is an unknown right now as they used to really suck, but might get much better with Google now owning them. (It didn't help moto's rep that nearly all their phones in the US were Verizon phones and Verizon is infamous for blocking updates.)
On other point on the updates is that ALL the US variants of the SGS3 are pretty much the same, making any effort to update them more worthwhile.
Finally, you have a final concern about apps not working on older phones. I actually disagree with that statement. Every single app on my current phones will work fine under Gingerbread which is a few years old already. I'd be confident saying that if you buy a phone today that's sure to get jelly bean, you'll be good for apps for at least 3 years.
Take care and good luck
Gary
I don't think you have to worry about apps being incompatible in the next 2 years for the s3. Majority of apps are compatible all the way back to donut. My s2 on gingerbread hasn't ran into this issue either.
I think you will be fine for the next 2 years because of the development with the first galaxy s series alone. But if you want the latest and greatest you might be tempted to get something else next year.
I love my SGS3 but I agreed with the plastic cover being thin and feeling cheap. Samsung just announced that a S4 will be released early next year so I guess a lot of development will go for the newer phone. The micro SD and 4.8" screen did it for me.
build quality

I think the whole build quality flimsy plastic thing is way over blown. The same discussion takes place in camera forums regarding magnesium bodies vs composite bodies.
for phones the truth is (at least as I see it) that build quality for higher end phones is all smoke and mirrors everyone puts a case on it anyway and they all have the potential to break if you drop them so plastic or aluminum doesnt matter.
If your worried about durability you put a otterbox on and you cant tell what its make of anyway if you are worried about fasion you put some fancy case on and it still breaks if you drop it.
The S3 plastic back is less likely to scratch than the iphone one and if it does it is replaceable the iphone isnt.

No, everyone doesn't. I haven't used any type of case on a phone since I was using an ipaq. Some people prefer using them "naked" and might carry them in some kind of belt clip holster. (I used a thin strip of rubber tape to deal with the iphone4 antenna issue.) Some use a case - some don't.

I can't speak for the iphone 5 or "3s", but in regards to the original iphone, the 4 and 4S, this statement isn't true. The coating on the back of the S3 is so sensitive that if you sneeze near it you'll have a new scratch.
This is actual experience with the international SGS3 (blue), AT&T SGS3 (blue) and AT&T SGS3 (red) as well as the above mentioned iphone's. (I can also compare to a range of nexus devices, a couple of HTC devices and at least 2 moto android-based devices.)
On the other hand, it IS easy to replace the back cover (assuming you can get a replacement - AT&T doesn't sell them and the various ebay sellers don't seem to have OEM red ones yet. OEM blue ones ship from China the last I checked. I don't have a white phone so can't comment on that.)
I don't want to get into a pissing contest between this phone and that phone. The OP asked I gave a frank and honest response. My own (personal) device that I use most commonly is the international SGS3, but I do own all the mentioned devices (and more.) Is the sgs3 the best device currently? Well, I think it is today (but I don't mind a few scuffs on the back plate of my phone, insist on a replacable battery, don't like being locked into apple, etc.)
I was with the iphone for a long time But then finally jumped over a while ago. Even after looking at the new iphone..there is nothing..nothing at all Apple has done or offered to make me even think about going back.
Perhaps 'everyone' uses a cover is an overstatement but I would say that nearly everyone uses a case is not to far off base.
so far I have had no scratches on my sg3 (although I do have a case on it) I would also suspect that the aluminum will be less scratch resistant than the iphone glass was. Of course we dont know yet but... drag your keys acros the top of a mac book it will definitly scratch.
The Captivate (AT&T Galaxy S1 variant) still has active cyanogenmod development. I think that it's very likely that this will too.
What amazes me is that people actually put the s3 into their pockets without a case... One drop and the screen is toast. Please buy an Otterbox commuter case.... My 18 month old chucks it and not one issue so far. S3 will have a ton of development. Let's hope the S4 does not use a larger screen, except if they get rid of all the buttons and go full screen without any bezel gaps. Going to sell this puppy on amazon and get the S4 when the time arrives.

It's mostly teenagers who think they don't need a case, since at that arrogant age they tend to think that both they and their tech are invincible.
And On-Topic: The S3 is on track to sell 30 million devices, so it'll be seeing support for at least 2 years. My less popular 2.25 year-old Captivate got CM7, CM9, and CM10 updates afterall.

30, no case. Haven't had one for any phone and haven't needed one. Have dropped a gs2 from 5 feet onto asphalt without a scratch. Cases are for people who are not careful with their devices, or have a mission critical need for their phone. Although really, cases are for people that get suckered in by the salesman who has to meet his accessory quota. Or any other ridiculous generalization you want to make.

I wish I was a teenager again. At 41, and prefer not to take a thin phone and make it thick with a case. I do use a belt holster, however, to carry it around. (I have too much other stuff in my pockets to put my phone in there.)
Oh, and I'm still arrogant... that has nothing to do with age.

A further reply on this comment - and concerning the references to apple/iOS. As you said, Apple tends to keep OS updates going for at least a couple years.
However, you didn't mention what level of updates they actually get. A year after I got an iphone4, iOS 5 had a new feature called "siri." For some reason, apple didn't give that to the iphone 4 users. (The jailbreaking community proved that the older phone could easily handle running it.) This year, iOS6 is being pushed to my iphone4. There are SEVERAL "new" features of the OS that aren't appearing on my iphone4 including several related to the maps, navigation, siri, etc, etc.
Essentially, while apple does send out OS updates to a phone for two (or even more) years, they aren't complete updates and really are no better (and in many cases quite a bit worse) than the updates you'll see with an android device. At least Samsung doesn't send out an update called "jellybean" that has jellybean features stripped out of it.
Example? The SGS2 (over a year old now) is getting google's voice search(similar to siri) with the JB update (even if Samsung doesn't push it, there are already CM10 ports available for it), already has the map features that the iphone4 will never get, etc.

The Rock 'quicksand' cases are the only ones I can tolerate. Add a good screen protector and you have a slim but protected s3.

Buy vzw HTC ONE now or wait for the nexus 5?

Hey all-
I am in the middle of a dilemma, I currently own a VZW galaxy nexus and it is on its last leg. The battery is shot, takes forever to connect calls, and is slow. I have been trying to baby it till the nexus 5 comes out but it is so annoying using a phone that is slow. I have been looking into the HTC one (my previous phone was the HTC incredible and I loved it). But I cant decide if I should try and wait for the N5? I understand that the HTC One as of now cannot achieve S-off/Root, but I am assuming it is only a matter of time till developers crack it.(thank you to all the great developors on XDA!) so what would you do in my situation? Wait for the N5 or go with the One?
I am really drawn to the one for the metal body and the new sense seems pretty nice, IMHO the S4 is to gimmiky.

Who's to say that the Nexus 5 is coming to Verizon unless you plan on switching carriers.. You weren't really clear on that aspect. There is a great deal of new devices that are coming out soon which should make for an exciting fall and Q4..
Also on a side note never buy a device with the assumption that the developer community will unlock, root, s-off the device you plan to buy. With devices coming out so frequently and OEMs becoming smarter with the way they are locking down their devices it's a game of cat and mouse or hit or miss if you will......
I recently purchased the HTC One just because it's an amazing device, that is with the hopes the the real deal hackers crack the bootloader to achieve s-off, unlock, root etc...
Right now I am in the same boat. I have waited this long what's another month or two to see what the Nexus 5 has in store?
Yes it may mean changing carriers which sucks but Verizon has done everything to sabotage the htc one (4 months late, no black model, quickly locking it down) that they no longer deserve my business...
So I will wait to see what the fall phones bring before making a decision at this point.
As soon as you wait for one device to arrive, another ridiculous phone is right around the corner. It's an endless cycle.
I was in the same boat. HTC Incredible > Galaxy Nexus > ? I considered the Nexus 5 but between the solid rumors it is going to be an LG (my least favorite oem) and the fact VZW let the N4 pass it by I opted to go with the HTC One.
Got it day 2 expecting to unlock it. No such luck but not having root after coming from a Gnex has not been a big deal. The HTC One is sooo awesome compared to the Gnex. The only things I miss from root/roms is long press back button kill (more of a habit than an issue), some of the Sense screens (Like the battery usage screen). They are such picky things I have no regrets moving to the One.
Did I mention that while my Gnex needed 1 to 2 charges throughout the day to make it to bedtime but the one can stay off the charger and with similar usage has 40% left. With heavy usage I got to 14% once after 16 hours on battery. Battery and sluggishness drove me to a new phone and I am glad it was the HTC One.
I agree with all of you, however I plan on staying with vzw.... What phones other than the n5 are coming out? There is the new lg buy I cannot stand the volume rocker on the back....is there any other phones that have been confirmed to be with big red?

Yeah I would assume the Note 3 would most likely come to Verizon as well being that it is the primary and most popular phablet to date..
Nexus 5 definitely won't show up on Verizon. The only other great phone left this year on Verizon will likely be the G2. That looks to be even more powerful than the HTC One and a larger screen. I don't care for it because its LG and their android skin is horrendous. I also could never get a plastic phone after having an HTC One. Its your call though of course!
I've sort of stopped playing the "should I get it or wait?" game because the smartphone market has just become so insane. Once you get a phone, a newer, better one is right around the corner. I got the HTC One knowing the bootloader got locked up, and I'm really enjoying it...even stock it's nice. I mean, I can't wait to put other roms on it, but nevertheless, it's awesome.
I also had a similar smartphone trajectory. OG Droid -> DInc-> GNex
In April I bought the S4, but really wanted The One. So last week I sold my s4 on craigslist and bought The One. It is fantastic as is. My contract is finally up in December, and coincidentally my discount expired this month. So if the N5 comes out and looks substantially better than The One, I will sell The One on swappa or craigslist or ebay. My point is go ahead and buy the phone, if you want something newer in the future you can always sell it and get another phone, though you may take a small loss. The One is amazing and although 6 months old I can hardly believe it will feel "outdated" in even a year....

I would stop waiting and just get the one. I came from the GNexus and the one is better in every way. faster, better screen, better battery, better speakers and sound etc.
My thought is that if there is a phone out I want I'll get it vs waiting. If you decide to wait for the next best thing you'll never get a phone. They come out so fast now.

Thanks for all of your responses! I think I am going to go ahead and get the one! I am in the design industry and I have been waiting for a beautiful android and the one is it! Going out this week and getting it,
The N5 will most likely not be anywhere near Verizon/Sprint so might as well get a One.

Hey all-
I am in the middle of a dilemma, I currently own a VZW galaxy nexus and it is on its last leg.

I would get a one now if it has the nokia microphones and I think they still carry this feature. One HTC runs out of stock for these you probably won't see them in any other device in the future other than windows phones since microsoft is buying nokia. I listened to a few comparison videos on youtube and those microphones make a huge difference in recording capability. Htc ones with these mics will probably have high resale value later on down the road.

Microsoft isn't buying Nokia from any source I've read... In fact from what I understand nokie is thinking of backing out of the partnership they currently have...

I bought the one...it was nice. I returned it and am waiting for the Moto X to hit retail stores so I can Czech it out. I like as stock of an Android experience as possible, and the X looks like the best choice in that dept.
With the One, the build is awesome, the screen is great and the front facing speakers are amazing. The overlay I didn't care for (icons still remind me of my 2.2 Thunderbolt) and I thought the camera was terrible (even in direct comparison to my aging S3).
But, I think right now it's at least in the top 2 phones on Verizon, and I don't think you can go wrong with it.

They are buying the Nokia Mobile for $7 billion.

Sadly, there is no tempered glass love for the MAXX... but the Moto X has a ton on ebay. What gives?!?
The Moto X is the only phone that matters because it's not a Droid and not basically tied to Verizon like the Droid Ultra/MAXX/Mini happen to be.
Just sheer economics at work: the Moto X is available from multiple carriers and is more popular because of that fact, so it will obviously make more money for companies that create accessories for that phone.
Hell, I went into a Verizon store the other day looking for a screen protector for my Mini - that's Verizon, the company that sells the damned phone in the first place - and they were like "We don't have any accessories for the Mini..." and they didn't. Not one thing for the Mini at all, which is pretty damned messed up in my opinion.
I don't know what kind of contract Verizon made long ago with Motorola for the Droid lineup, but I sure as hell wish it would come to an end soon.

Your first mistake was going into a Verizon store looking for anything. I can't count how many different ways Verizon makes their stores totally worthless.

Well they list the accessories online at their website and it says available in their retail outlets so... just glad I don't actually purchase stuff from Verizon I suppose.
People will say they don't exist. But I know for a fact that at one point last year they did. Best Buy or some store like that my friend in Indiana was able to buy a tempered glass protector for his droid maxx. I have searched high and low and made many calls, but no luck.
At work I just got an iPhone, so I ordered a tempered glass screen protector to go with it.
I didn't see what the big deal was until I actually got it. This thing is great. I really wish someone sold one for the Droid Maxx. I'm sure it's too late now, though.
