Was just wondering what all goes into a nandroid backup or other bootable saves and perhaps if it was possible for someone to create a rooted 2.1 with nothing on it upload it then move it to my phone and recover off of it. Or are these things very phone sensitive?
Maybe its still early for me but why wouldn't you just download the stock rooted rom?
It sounds like you are on stock 2.2 without root. Is that correct? If so this is not possible because you need a custom recovery to flash nandroid backups.

Hey guys, this is a really simple question, but was not able to find a simple answer for this.
I'm running stock rooted and am thinking about trying a new ROM, the question is:
1) when I do a backup of current ROM through clockworkmod recovery, does this back up all my apps? or do I need to use mybackup pro or titanium to backup my apps as well as the clockwork backup?
2) if I decide that I do not like the new ROM, can I just go restore from clockworkmod and recover my old ROM (stock) or will I need to flash the RUU file to get back to stock?
Sorry for the noob type questions, just wanna make sure I am squared away to get into these custom ROMs

1) Your apps are backuped, it creates an exact image of your phone at that point. If you do a full wipe then thats when Titanium backup comes in handy.
2) Restoring a nand backup as long is the stock rom backup you want will get you back up and running.
You will need Titanium backup or mybackup if ur gonna flash a new ROM. The nandroid will backup apps, but only useful when you restore back to that nandroid. To restore ur apps after flashing a new ROM, you will need titanium.

Hey, this may seem like a silly question but i would rather ask it than brick my device.
I have rooted and s-off my stock rom, i have installed all my apps and settings and ive got it just the way i like it. i have created a nandroid backup using clockwork mod.
I now want to try Gingervillian rom, ive got titanium backup to install all the apps back and that but what i want to know is:
Will i be able to restore my stock rom from the nandroid backup with all my apps and setting in tact, even though s-off is set and its rooted. i know a read somewhere that flashing a stock rom on a phone with s-off can semi-brick it... so will clockwork recovery do the same?
When you make a 'nandroid' backup via ROM manager/CWM Recovery, it makes essentially a carbon copy of the current setup of your ROM (not your radio, S-Off status, etc.). Literally everything is perfectly as you have it now. It just like doing a full HDD backup of your computer.
When you restore this backup, it simply brings back your ROM from exactly how it was. There is no effect on your root or S-off, or your radio.
So, if you do a nandroid backup, then wipe the device and flash another ROM i.e. Gingervillain, and make a nandroid of that, you can then freely switch back and forth between the 2 (or more) recoveries via ROM manager/CWM Recovery, with no issues.
The issues with bricking as you're referring to are if you for some reason try to somehow flash a non-rooted ROM, which would most definitely cause issues. In order to get back your phone to stock-stock-stock-stock (unroot and S-on), you will need to follow unroot instructions and flash an official unrooted RUU/PC10IMG.zip to get back to everything as it came out of the box.

hey i had skyraider then used chad's kernal and it got stuck in the boot loop. so i just restored it using the clockwork. now everything is back to normal just rooted. so...if i ever decide i want to go back to stock rom and kernal when i have custom roms and kernals cant i just restore it back to normal? does this make sense?
Is the backup you have of SkyRaider or a backup of the Stock ROM you made after rooting? You can always restore backups of anything you make to the point in which the backup was made. You should backup before flashing something new, in case you don't like it...saves lots of work.
If you want to go back to complete stock, un-rooted and all, you'd have to use the RUU. This would be putting the phone to the point just like it was when you unboxed it and turned it on.

No problem, just some added info: the backup you make will also keep the kernel, so if you flash a custom kernel and backup the ROM, it'll keep that kernel too. So there's no need to reflash that if you restore a backup.
And s-on patch to unroot. Dont get in the situation like me where you can't s-on and use your warranty

Although i went through a lot of threads, i think i am still not sure and would need a noob type simple answer to this:
I have CWM installed and rooted. I performed nandroid backup of the current state of my phone.
Now i want to try all the different ROMS available and i see some are just ROMS and some include Kernels. So if i install ROM and move to another and at the end decide that my current stock ROM is better for me. Will i be able to restore it from the nandroid backup without any issue. Thanks.
Yes, or you could just Odin back to stock. (You could flash the stock rom justblike any other rom)

and if you want to go back and forth between different ROMs you can just backup and restore your Nandroid Backup
i've several copies of Nandroid sitting in my SD card, in case i feel like using another ROM for a change
it's great for times when you are trying to fix or troubleshoot a bug, and you wonder if it's a phone hardware problem or software
so by quickly restoring another ROM, you can rule out that problem very fast and efficiently
i'll at the very least always carry a STOCK Tmo/Telus backup, and my in use Backup, and then the next favourite ROM flavour backup
So I've upgraded Blazer ROM and I HATE it. My phone is running SO ****ty, so I want to do a complete restore and stick with stock rom's til I can take my phone back and upgrade to the s III. SO, my question is, will a nandroid backup done NOW be able to restore all my apps for the stock rom? Or if not what's an easy way to re-install all the apps I have now for a downgraded rom?? Does that make sense??? My brain has been fried for weeks so apologize if things aren't clear.
Not every ROM is perfect, you may want to try a more mainstream and stable ROM before giving up. To your point though...
A nandroid backup will restore everything to the exact state including the /system (ROM) and /data (apps+settings).
If you want to downgrade, the easiest way is just to sync all your apps through Google Play. Google will automatically sync apps registered to your Gmail account. You will loose all the settings this way however.
If you can flash the original ROM but leave S-OFF and retain root access, you could do a titanium backup and restore all apps + data. Another user will need to elaborate on the plausibility of this.
