Firmware Chaos - Galaxy S I9000 Android Development

Hi there!
I am a bit overwhelmed by the strange release order on samsung-firmware.com of the last "inofficial" (whatever) releases of the european i9000 firmware. Theres a JM1, a JM1 NEW, a JM2 and JM5. To make chaos complete Kies is offering me a JM1 as well, when entering test mode. What kind of JM1 would that be? The old one, the new one, or a total different one? I followed all the threats losely over the past month, but somehow lost track. A short guide is very much appreciated. Or, to put it bluntly, what F/W should I flash regarding stability, speed and gps? Or, just what the heck is the right order?
Thanks in advance,
Chicken

The JM1 New is the Version from Kies, so if you worry about warranty issues, you always should use KIES updates.
I don't know if there is a difference between JM1 and JM1 NEW.
I would recommend JM5. Stable, fast and everything works as it should.
I'd also recommend to flash the Samset rom after flashing JM5 and then the latest Lagfix. Your phone will be flying!

Well.. are you sure about that? Because I got JM2 from Kies, and it's different than the JM2 from samsung-firmwares.com...

I'm using DDJG4 and it works perfect and even better with lag fix and evo gps fix

JPJG8 is the best version I used so far! It also does not have the contact FC bug!

I bought my Galaxy S in Germany end of June
I got JF3 as Stock Fimrware
I Updated to JM1 over Kies
as i heard JM2 over Kies is only for branded SGS.
All other Fimrware Versions are from Samsung but not officially released (over Kies),
They are leaked Developer or Beta Versions.
The JM1 from Kies is diiferent to that previously leaked one from samsung-fimrwares.
So in th officially sight there is no chaos(for the firmwares).
regards
Christopher

Im on XXJF4 PDA XXJF3 Phone and TMUJE6 CSC on an unbranded and unlocked SGS and when i plug into Kies it tells me that i cant update my current version. I have tried other firmwares for samsung-firmwares and it still tells me i cant update. Does this device need to be put into a procific mode to update though Kies or is the no update for UK?

I understand you are Norwegian? Did you get JM2 from Kies???

Yes, I got JM2 from Kies, but with Kies in test-mode. I didn't even have to set up my APN again, it included Telenor

Great! When?
Unbranded SGS?

Unbranded SGS yes. Flashed it a couple of days ago.
BTW! This is the firmware info:
PDA: I9000XWJM2
Phone: I9000XXJM1
CSC: I9000XEEJM1

To determine the LATEST firmware look at the last three letters/numbers.
Assume they are in base 36 and then look which has a higher value.
All good?

Hmm.. i'm running the new JM1 from samsung-firmwares (which is a official release!)
You can see that because the CSC file states XEEJM1 instead of XXJM1

I couldn't get any update running in "normal" mode.

This makes me rage...
I also have an unbranded SGS (Bought from Komplett), and Kies won't give me an update in test mode or normal mode. I really want this new - official - firmware.
Maybe I need an older version of Kies...

The "leaked" firmwares aren't beta or test firmwares necessarily (except the Froyo firmwares) - they're merely service centre firmwares. Samsung releases many firmwares, some of which have different firmware versions, but which may essentially all be the same, to their service centres but never makes them available for users to download.
To my knowledge, there is NO "official" UK update yet (via Kies). However, if you take your phone to a service centre, they may well flash it with a newer firmware than the one you have.
----------------------
When dealing with firmwares it is very important to remember that one firmware release (one code branch) may contain 20 or 30 or more actual firmwares. This is because of network / operator branding and language files. This is why the firmwares we're seeing for the Galaxy are XXJM5, JGJM8 etc.
Samsung firmware versioning works like this:
Firmware version i9000XXJM5 means:
i9000 = Phone model
XX = Country / region (XX is generic Europe 1)
J = Year of build / release
M = Month of build / release
5 = Consecutive number (so 5th build of the JM branch)
...what is interesting is that Samsung are using month codes which are over the 12th letter in the alphabet (which is L) - this usually means the firmware is a test / beta firmware, but the fact that JM2 is available to the public via Kies counters this.
When you take all these things into account, it becomes obvious that the JG and JM builds are all essentially the same, but just with different localisations / customisations for the languages / regions / networks they were originally intended for.
I should also add that any one "firmware" is made up of three elements; the PDA (phone code), CSC (branding / localisation / applications) & modem (baseband) code. That's why you will sometimes see different version numbers for each specific part of a firmware, within the one "whole" firmware version.

What FW version are you running now? I was running JM2 from samsung-firmwares.com when I tried through Kies.

n00b questions

Hi all,
I'm new to the Android world.
This morning I received my i9000 device and already in love with it!
I'm on firmware: I9000XXJF3
On the Samsung Firmwares site I saw a lot of different firmwares.
What firmware would be best for my i9000 (8gb EU model on T-Mobile Netherlands)?
If there is a better firmware, why should I upgrade? Or is better to wait for Froyo?
To change firmware do I need to root the device?
I also read stuff about recovery kernel, do I need to do that first?
Also do I need Odin or do I need another app for firmware upgrading?
What lag fix app do I need?
A lot of n00b question... But I hope someone can help me out.
Tnx!
Hey,
JF3 is the latest official Firmware for your device.
All other firmwares which you saw on the website are leaked firmwares, means they are not officialy released by samsung.
There are already leaked froyo firmwares, but jit is broken and they are more or less in alpha stage, so i wouldn't update to froyo atm. If you want froyo, you should wait for the official release in september.
I recommand JM2, its the most responsive and smooth firmware, in my opinion. JM5 is also very good. but keep in mind, they're both leaked.
To flash a new firmware you need odin, there is a tutorial, just check the stickies in this section.
You dont have to root your device to flash, but if you still want to, there is also a tutorial.

no its not, JF stands for 2010 June
M is not a official code for a month.
JF = Year (J) / Month (F) , Release-Date of Firmware
Year of Release:
A = 2001
B = 2002
C = 2003
D = 2004
E = 2005
F = 2006
G = 2007
H = 2008
I = 2009
J = 2010
Month of Release:
A = January
B = February
C = March
D = April
E = May
F = June
G = July
H = August
I = September
J = October
K = November
L = December
So if you have M-Z as month code, its not a official release ^^
Hopefully i am right, if not correct me plz xD

The best firmware right now (but this is subjective) is JM5 if you ask me. It is not official.
You can wait for froyo but JM5 is a massive improvement to JF3 already.
You don't need to root to install firmware.
You don't need custom recovery kernel either .
Firmware upgrading is done in odin.
With JM2 or JM5 you don't really need a lagfix because the phone will be fast enough without. Otherwise both RyanZA and Chainfire's fixes are simple and effective.

Thanks guys for all the answers!
It's a lot more clear to me now!!
Really appreciated. Going to flash JM2 or JM5 this weekend.
Btw does JM2 or JM5 contain the Dutch language? Also Swype in Dutch?
Cheers
before you flash anything make sure your 3 button combo is working properly

Thanks!
Just tried the 3 buttons and I got in recovery mode (when pressing volume up) and got in download mode (when pressing volume down).
I can see 4 options: reboot, apply sdcard:update.zip, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition
Also I see the Android with a yellow triangle.
What does the wipe cache partition do? Of course it wipes cache. ;-)
But what is the use of it?
Do I need to flash all 3 TAR files? (CODE, CSC, MODEM)
Code is probably the OS itself, Modem is radio rom but what is CSC?
Anyone?
Lezen?
wiping the cache partition can fix problems with some programs...

[OFFICIAL FROYO] 2.2 rollout started on Kies for UK owners

Samsung UK have just posted on Facebook that the UK Froyo rollout has started on Kies. Here's their full post:
"Samsung UK The roll out of Android 2.2 Froyo for Galaxy S has begun today, as some of you will have already seen. As previously stated the roll out will be completed in the UK by the end of November. To get your handset ready for the upgrade please download the latest version of Kies from the support section on Samsung.com/uk, where you can also find a video in the ‘How-To-Guides’ on how to download Kies and install Android 2.2 Froyo. http://bit.ly/cfjJDa"
...now going to check version numbers on my Kies...
EDIT: Also a new Kies version available: 1.5.3.10103.100 (which will NOT allow registry hacks to change product code / firmware version)
Also for XEU phones!!! XD YEAH!!!
Argh mines still won't update :\ 'this devices version cannot be updated'
I got an update today. The version is JPA/JPP. I updated using kies, from JPK. hope its the official one
Kies seems to be wise to the registry key hack to change firmware versions... at least it is ignoring whatever I set the registry to on my computer

The update through KIES is version JPO if you're in the UK
I'm in Ireland, got the phone from Carphone Warehouse and updated via Kies to JPA/JPP today. Also installed Ya-OK-Kernel, which seems to work flawlessly.
Edith sais: I updated from JP6, deactivated all lagfixes first. Settings where lost, but all installed apps stayed.
Hey there, I just upgraded to Froyo through Kies.. How do I root on 2.2? I've forgotten how I did it on 2.1. :/

Not sure that's going to help, apparently Samsung has blocked the registry hack as of Kies 1.5.3.10103_100. Any manual code one might enter is immediately replaced by the real one upon restarting the update.
Here are some codes if you are willing to try too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7872726&postcount=3

HIDSWVER and product code are stored in the registry in Windows.
I know Kies has blocked this hack, I want to know the info for another reason (and I've changed the code on my phone and can't remember it's original one)

[Q] Flash back to stock ROM

HI
I have a UK Vodaphone SG Note 2 that I rooted a while back but cant remember what root I used
I did mange to get a Download message to appear on the screen when all three buttons were pressed the other day and I think this is the ODIN? down-loader
My issues is finding the right ROM. I have found two on the internet
N7100XXDMC3
N7100XXDMB2
But my phone says that it has:
N7100BUDMD1
The two above seem to be from March this year and I can remember that before I rooted I did up grade from Android 4.11 - 4.12.
So how do I find the exact baseband version as there is no sign of a download for:N7100BUDMD1
Cheers in advance for any help

It shouldn't matter what firmware you download as long as it is for Vodafone UK. Provided you return to full stock, you'll be able to update to the latest firmware provided through Vodafone. Baseband name is different from firmware name afaik. If you can bring up more info on the firmware, they should also show baseband/modem version too.
Cheers

No But the answer is!
I'll try to keep it short as we already have a thread on what all noticeable has changed etc.
1: Upgrade or Not as of now is more of a subjective thing. What I may find might better/worse might be completely opposite for you, as a lot of minor things have changed. Given that most will succumb to some form of an update and have to accept what is made available to them at the time, it seems like updating should be perhaps a good enough consideration, however, check your region and firmware on sammobile.
I would advise against updating unless applicable firmware version for your region ends with MI1/MI2 or above (MJ1,MJ2..,MK1, ..) (I/J/K denote build months, in this case being september/october/november resp). There are noted issues across different region with older 4.2.2 firmwares. Mainly S-pen and Magnetic cover issues (alarm) which again may or may not be of any consequence to you.
Q2:. Why didn't you get an OTA? :
2.1: Is your Device factory Stock?.
2.2: Might have to do with that samsung has not released updates for your device region yet and perhaps also look into settings if auto OTA Updates are enabled.
I have updated my Note 8 today manually because it has not been available neither via OTA nor via KIES - a quick check on SAMMOBILE shows no 4.2.2 version published for my region. Therefore I decided to push manually the latest 4.2.2 XX version (XX in the name of the ROM means that it is for Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom).
Note that it is the third 4.2.2 XX release which I hope is good enough. Samsung has released 4.2.2 versions for a few other regions too dealing with the reported problems. I am not aware of any strict schedule region by region - it means that you may wait quite long for your regional version. Therefore I replaced my XE version (Bulgaria, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine) with the available XX one.
The update went smoothly even on my encrypted Note 8 and at first glance everything is running fine, every setup and data is preserved. The first thing I noticed was the "flatter" color palette as most of the contemporary changes in the colors. I do not see change in the performance, neither the sound quality for example...
There are some minor improvements in the 4.2.2 user interface which I was missing in 4.1.2 and they were the second driver for the upgrade. The main was the sheer curiosity .
So, it is really up to you whether you will go for your manual update

Hi, I'm also interested in performing this operation, but come on tell me if this invalidates the warranty?
My current firmware is: G988BXXS5BTJ4
I would like to flash this: G988BXXU5CTKG
you can switch csc without problems with samkey. In case of warranty you can switch back. I've done the same for DBT
what do you mean by samkey?
Samkey is the tool to use for changing the CSC.
I did it Friday for the first time on my German (DTM) S20 Ultra and switched CSC to Nordic (NEE).
However, I'm not getting the One UI 3/Android 11 update OTA.
I'm suspecting it is because, OTA only updates the most recent version for that CSC, and the DTM-CSC was 2-3 updates behind.
So Odin is probably necessary in that case to get the latest update.
