Orange UK Froyo 2.2 upgrade date released - Desire General

I'm an HTC Desire owner and have been waiting and waiting for Orange to offer up a date when users can expect an update.
I've called Orange several times now and until now have been given the usual ' this update usually takes up to four weeks'.......that is until now.
I just got off the phone with Orange customer service and the call operator and I had a quick chat, he popped me on hold for about a minute then came back and told me they now have on their systems a release date of August 27th. He confirmed that I wil receive a text message telling me to download the update and that's still I'll need to do.
I thought I would share so other Orange UK Desire owners can also relax with the checking system updates every 5 minutes.
Awesome.

may I suggest something, root, flash stock 2.2, unroot.. lost warrenty for however long it will take you to flash a new ROM and bring the warrenty back by unrooting, simple

I wonder if they left out the Orange baggage to release it earlier rather than later...

it a race between o2 and t-mobile to see who comes in last. o2 should of been 1st, all they had to do was add an o2 wallpaper and ringtone.

Hmmm we shall wait and see. I'm off work on friday so will update as soon as poss.

Nothing yet ... this week I was told as well, poss at the end ... if it all and be ready for shed loads of bloatwere , I have my auto kill running ( I know i know ) to stop the orange apps from starting at start up... The RUU won't be out for a while if at all, will probably just be an OTA for now.

must be a way to write a script to check the servers manually?

Bear in mind that if you apply the Orange froyo update you won't be able to root, and you probably won't be able to downgrade, leaving no options to debrand or root at all.

At least for a while (maybe forever)

It's something to be very wary of for anyone who wants to try out Orange's update. People who updated to the Vodafone froyo release are in the same position.

sent my xda 2 to o2(uk) for repairs, returned UK Rom 1.66

This, I assume, is the very latest UK rom, I had 1.60 before that. Getting the machine tomorrow, will post exact rom then, however I do not know how to copy it and send it you guys, can anyone explain in the simplest term how to do this? I have XP, Thanks
out of interest, what was wrong with the XDAII?
Reply
it would freeze and only a hard reset could fix this when connected to a Socket SDIO card, this would happen every 3 or 4 days.

If it's arriving tomorow, how do you already know it's 1.66 mate?
And just for interest, I seem to recall that the GERMAN version of the O2 ROM was just released last week at 1.66 - I wonder if this is a version of this for a UK market, or if O2 are about to release 1.66 over here too.
Anyone know how he can 'reverse assemble' it from his device so he can share it?
i had the same freezing issues but my device was 1.66
but i'm pretty sure that the freezing was due to a 3th party program
been awhile since it froze last
and i doubt it could be a hardware issue since hardreset always works
Mikey Collins - keep us posted on the outcome when it arrives please...
What program caused the crashing ? PocketWinc?
And I know it is coming with 1.66 because I called them. Any idea what sort of programs could have caused this?

What sort of programs could have caused this? The new upgrade you mean or the re-flash?
Could be a number of things mate, though usually a hard reset will cure all your woes.
Let us know what the actual real numbers are, for your ROM, extended ROM etc, when it actually arrives, as what O2 say on the phone, and what happens in real life, are noted for how far apart they tend to be where O2 is concerened.
And there will be an awful lot of people interested in your info, so keep us posted.

I emailed O2 Data Support about this, to see when or if they were intending to release 1.66.
This is my reply back from them:
Hello Mr xxxxxxx,
Thank you for your email,
After querying this with our technical team, we would like you to provide
evidence of the Rom 1.66 occurring, as we believe this not to be the case.
If you are experiencing problems with your XDA, you can replace the device
under warranty via your customer services team.s

So can you give us some more info, or reply to me off board Mikey? As I suspect it is YOU that is correct, and O2 wrong, and would like to challenge them over this.

Sounds good if you are right, and yes i am as critical about o2 as the rest of you, but ive found that there is an easyish way to get through to o2 on the fones if u need sumthing, call their staff accounts people on
0800131211
and since its freefone (in the uk @ least, i guess they have this sorta service elsewhere) it dont matter how long ur on the fone with them.
neway, will it be possible to upload the rom to the site?
Smiley
They are all shipping with 1.66 now
my girlfriend just got a new xd2, same OM as mine.
My xda2 which I am selling on this site also came with the new rom after they replaced the motherboard. I dont know if its me but the screen seems so much better, on a par now with the ipaq 3900 series, bright, clear, good depth of colour etc. Its for sale in the stocking up section of this site if anybody is interested. £350 Uk.
I just purchased an XDA II yesterday, and it also came with ROM version 1.66.00WWE (Incidently, the ROM date shows as 20th Feb 04)

I repeatedly Emailed O2 about this, and eventually there response was that more recent versions of the XDA2 ship with a slightly different screen (hardware wise).
New drivers are needed for this, and this is the ONLY difference in 1.66, which is not available for public download.
I emailed them back to tell them what a load of old cobblers, and that it includes a Cleartype tuner and more.
They went decidedly quiet at that point.
Any chance that O2 have fixed the Handsfree dll problem in Version 1.66? Can you get mp3 / Tom tom audio etc. to come out of the bottom connector? (Many people have a problem with the XDA II that they can only get Phone call audio to go to the bottom connector, even though the T-Mobile ROM's apparently don't have this problem.)
You can use a tool provided free on this site in the tools and software section to download your ROM to an SD card, and I assume that it can also download it to your PC.
I'm by no-means an expert, but I've had a go at fiddling with it so far and this is what I've found...
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/CompleteTools
Follow the XDA Tools link and download the program, tell it to read the ROM from the device and Put it on your PC, then you can post it here.
I know this program worked with flashing the ROM from my XDA, never tried it with an XDA II though, although I will try it when I get home tomorrow.
There were a couple of more difficult to use tools provided for the XDA II that need you to log into the 'Bootloader' on the device using a command prompt (Like DOS) style program providxed by HTC (the manufacturers of the XDA and XDA II) but I can't remember where they were and I'm using my girlfriends crappy tinternet connection at the moment and can't be bothered to search the site. I'll have a more detailed set of instructions posted asap if I can find out how to do it all over the weekend.
Other than that, if anyone else can post details of how to do it, I'd be very grateful cos it all seems a lot more complicated with the XDA II to change the ROM than it was with the XDA.
Cheers,
Rom version 1.66.00 wwe
Guys be vvvvv careful when messing with this rom. If you attempt to update it to sort out the caller photograph recognition bugs you are in for a shock. Now you may already now which versions are the "older" versions but I did not and updated with the current official update from the O2 site. My XDA2 is now a one week old doorstop. Any suggestions anybody. I did back up to my SD card before the update but do not have a card reader...............yet!

good: its AMAZING, every issue was solved, i cant get this thing to hang, or find ANY problems, EVERYONE NEEDS TO GET THIS!!!!
bad: it was installed onto my device by HTC, and i have no idea how to get it off, if someone can tell me how to download it so others can use it let me know
very kewl post the rom version radio version ext... that would be great. screenshots would be good too
it LOOKS exactly like the beta, just runs properly, and ALOT faster, and uses less ram, even beter then after removing snapin from the beta version

htc messed with your rom? Was it in for service or purchased this way?
why would htc do that?
HTC as a whole dident, i know people, but this person wouldent give me the file, but he did updat my dash
thats cool
did he say if the htc version was ready yet?
i wonder why they are waiting until may 4 if the rom is ready now...
its part of a licence agreement with microsoft, microsoft wont let them release it yet
lol. figures that ms would want to control everything.
maybe it has something to do with live messenger and live update.
can't wait to check it out
Sorry I do not mean to pretend to know more than HTC or the original poster (being sincere here, no sarcasm), but I have an OMAP 2430 with Wm6, with an awful H264 decoder issue that I cant fix. (DSP level error). So unless these guys are using other hardware or DSPs I would expect at least 1 more version... sorry cant say my deadline.

My MDA set these settings automatically. I would not have a clue what to set or where to begin!
Is there a CAB file that can do this? It would be real useful to have a cab file for each of the main UK networks.
The people who have updated to this ROM, whats the battery life like? Better, worse or same?
Also does anyone have a Vodafone HTC TD User Manual so that we can see what the Voda foftware looks like and contains?
Will this install ok with the hard SPL? or will it get bricked as its not the OEM SLP?
Thanks,
Mark
Just answered my own question.. yes it does install fine.
Looks like they've nicked Duttys Rom. The animations have gone on TF3D. The A to Z scroll has been added on the weather app. Speaking of which the author of this spells my town as Baskingtoke instead of Basingstoke, no big deal but always gets a larf when someone sees it. Is there a way of editing this?
Radio ROM is 1.00.25.05

Installed the update last night, Radio hasn't changed and still is 1.00.25.03. Not happy that Voda haven't updated the Radio
Will post angry message on Voda's forum, once it starts working again
On a positive note, the update has increased the general speed of the TD.

[ROM] Wanted - Official Orange UK 2.03 ROM - Is it out yet?

Hi,
After numerous searches I so far haven't found anything...
Lots of links to the official 1.97 rom hosted on a random orange domain name. Nothing linked from the Orange site though.
Anyone else already got this or know when it may be released?
Thanks
Rob
I would not have though so - Orange are very slow at updating their ROM.
There have been phones past to me from orange retail recently that still have the June 08 ROM on lol
But there is a new home screen (analog and digital clock together) theme from orange in the themes and application section.

It's not going to happen any time soon, if at all.
Orange like to wait for the ROM to be established before upgrading to it. Then they need to stick their software all over it and ruin it!
Orange Retail are still supplying the original ROM from June 08 - LOL, despite the dummy models showing the analog clock Orange FR interface from last year also.

Froyo update rolling out this week(end)

The ROM is now available, download.
----
The update is now confirmed and it will be available this weekend:
The Android 2.2 (FroYo) update for HTC Desire will start rolling out across Europe this weekend. As well as including the complete set of Android 2.2 features, the update will contain a few special additions of our own through the latest iteration of HTC Sense. The update will provide 720p video capture, HTC's App Share widget, as well as our enhanced HTC Caller ID, and improved multi-language keyboard. Also, through the update, HTC Sync will allow HTC Desire users to sync their music with iTunes.
HTC Desire users will be notified that the over-the-air update is available to download when their phone automatically checks for software updates. The update won't delete any of the phone's content. However, due to the size of the update, we would advise using a WiFi connection to download it wherever possible to avoid additional data charges.
This update will initially roll out to unlocked HTC Desire handsets. Operator specific versions of the update are undergoing testing and we expect to make them available in several weeks' time.

As seen in this news item on the dutch site Tweakers.net, Mark Moons (HTC Director Benelux) says that the froyo update for the Desire will begin to roll out this thursday (tomorrow).
I think this news update is very reliable as Mark Moons also tweeted it "We will start updating the Desire to 2.2 tomorrow, later more devices".
What do you think?
Read the same thing, I am hopeful.
However called the support line and they did not have official release date yet, but then again what do they know.
(i was actually the person which pointed them to the twitter feed)
I think we can assume Mark Moons wouldn't **** us about a Froyo roll out. I have to say they did it quite speedy.

i'm from belgium but i speak dutch to so i want to say to i'm really happy, maybe im going back to the official rom
Wont be shocking for us flashers whove seen froyo before.but its nice to have the official update released.
He just posted a new message:
.Veel (o.a.) Tweakers kijken uit naar 2.2 met extra aandacht voor een specifieke feature.... maar 1 belangrijke wordt niet genoemd! rara...
(many (among others) Tweakers (dutch tech website) are looking forward to 2.2 with extra attention to a specific function (from replies on tweakers.net i deduce the a2sd function).....but 1 important one is not mentioned! who can guess it...
I'm guessing 720P recording.
It is now also posted on the official HTC NL twitter page:
http://twitter.com/HTC_NL
yes it´s comming....
even if the official 2.2 one will be released tomorrow, I will still wait for a custom one with A2SD+!
sorry i don't understand what you mean with A2SD+??? i thought this is a built-in feature of froyo? or do you mean something different?
it would be great if froyo would come tomorrow... i thought of rooting my desire this week, but now i will wait to see if froyo is officially coming to the desire
A2SD+ is a script that can install ALL apps to the SD-card on a new partition. Froyo can move and install all the apps to a seperate folder on your SD when the developer stated so.
Will Desire update by it self? i mean all i need is wifi turned on and check for updates in About Phone section?

Probably, it will be an over-the-air update and it will roll out over a few days because of bandwidth limits.
Personally i would advise anyone using debranded phones to use their gold cards when doing any possible OTA updates to avoid the problems experienced with the last OTA update!
