[Q] Can I use HSDPA and wifi at the same time? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I was curious if I can use 3G and wifi at the same time. When I turn on wifi it switches 3g off if a network is present. Can I have them both working at the same time

Hi, in my opinion this will not work. How should the data be separated? As far as I know you or the sw has to decide which packets have to be send over which connection. What do you need this for?

Not as far as I know. It's senseless anyway

I am with 3 uk and they have skype but it only works over mobile network, when I use wifi it stops. That's why I need it, no other reasons

[Q] Auto switch between 3G to wifi mode

This is a feature I was trying to use with WM6 in the past but it wouldn't work. My question has to do with Android in general and with either Desire or Desire HD.
Let's say that I use a 3G data contract and sometimes I have wifi available as well (but not always in reach). I want to save my 3G data because I pay per kb and prefer to use wifi when available. Is it possible for Android to automatically connect to WiFi when it is in reach and when I move out of its reach, to revert to 3G?
If not, what is the way to handle this? for example, do I manually enable/disable one of the 2 and try which works?
I just turn both data and WiFi on and leave them on. That way as soon as I am in a WiFi zone like at home, it will automatically connect to WiFi.

So, to make this even more clear: you have them both turned on (3G and WiFi) and WiFi will take priority? and revert to 3G only when WiFi is unavailble?
and we are talking about which model? or maybe it'a all Andreoid the same?
I think its the same with all Android phones. If both 3g and WiFi are on WiFi will take priority. I am at work and have both turned on...as soon as I go home, the phone will connect via WiFi automatically.
By the way I have a desire too.

Thanks a lot. That means that desire will do for me. I don't know if that has been resolved with WM though, maybe it will be with WP7 but I think that Android will e a better option for now.
Hi, you can also save battery/money with softwares that automaticly close 3g/wifi for night. I use "data on demand" and "settings profile lite" to close both for night and also close wifi when my location is not home.

nice. are most of those software free for Android or you have to buy them? similar to WM?
Hi, both are free, just install through Android Market.

Wifi Calling

Does the Wifi Calling app save more battery? I've noticed the network signal turns off when I enable Wifi Calling

Yes, saves LOTS of battery. Big difference when wifi calling is on.

Expanding on OP:
Does WiFi automatically supersede data as well? And if so, is there battery saving in that case?

When you turn on WiFi, all data goes through WiFi assuming that there is a good signal on it (aka if WiFi is so bad there is no data throughput, the phone will turn mobile data back on). The phone will always choose WiFi and turn off mobile data. Some/most people say that this saves battery because the phone isn't always searching for mobile data. I'd say that this is more true if you're in a situation where there is poor/low 3G reception but good WiFi reception. I almost never use WiFi because I get full bars and good 3G speed at home. I see no reason to use WiFi in this situation as my phone isn't searching for better networks.
As far as WiFi Calling goes, in the settings of the app you can choose to have the phone "Prefer WiFi"/"Prefer Cellular"/"WiFi Only". Same thing here. If I use WiFi calling, I choose "Prefer WiFi" because if for some reason my WiFi goes down while I'm not using the phone I want the mobile network to come on so I can receive calls without having to toggle back. A situation I could see where "WiFi Only" would be applicable is if you're traveling and want to use WiFi for calls if you have a data-only prepay SIM, or if you're in an area with only Roaming coverage and you would want to just use WiFi to make calls.

[Q] 3G network shut down

sometime I use desire z, it doesn't get the 3G network.
In preference, disable "mobile data" and enable, the net work start to work again.
do you have any idea?
Could be that you're slightly out of range for 3G coverage? Do check with your mobile operator.
If they say its your phone, then you could always root it and install a new radio, which *might/might not* improve signal.
Also have you tried using 3G in other areas?
Try enabling always on mobile data connection that should sort it out

thx,
i will try root my phone.

"always mobiledata on" doesn't use too much battery?
so i wanna avoid to use it.
Thats how you get it to keep your data network on, wasnt that the idea of the post?
Anyway you could download an app called extended controls which once set up allows you to enable and disable it with a click of a button

portable wifi hostspot

Having problems with my turning my phone into wifi hotspot (have uk orange htc desire hd chocolate). Turn on the portable wifi hostspot ok, my laptop and my archos 70i tab can both find and connect to it ok, BUT it dont work - on the laptop it just says local connection only - on the archos just wont connect to internet. most frustrating. also some problems with the data connection - phone shows the h or g icon and the arrows, but not connection when try browser etc usually works after a restart, but who wants to have to restart the phone every time you wanna use the data connection?
Any thoughts/suggestions?
Same hotspot problem
I ran into the same problem yesterday. I was testing if the wifi hotspot functionality worked, to use my phone for wifi tethering. As soon as I turn on the function, my data connection (3G) is disabled.
Doe anybody know how to keep the data connection after activating the wifi hotspot function?
Thanx in advance!

[Q] Have both GSM & WIFI running, is it possible?

Greetings All,
I am looking for a way to have both data connections running on the Desire, is there a way to make it happen? I understand that the battery will die out quicker its just something I want to toy with. We are looking at having SIP in our factory and I noticed that while playing with SIP and due to the strict nature of our work Internet I was no longer able to access gmail/htc mail and pretty much any other data using app. This is why I want to enable GSM data as well.
Any ideas? Tried searching but did not find anything relevant.
Don't wanna b too rude here but can't u just access those apps through ur 3g connection? Unless ofcourse ur carrier doesn't supply one
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Not being rude at all . Problem is that when the wifi is enabled the data connections (G, E, 3G & HSDPA) get disabled. I would like to keep those active and have only the wifi use the sip.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
i don think its possible coz one is an alternative for other..they both are not meant to run at same time
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
I thought it would not be possible. Thanks for the answers much appreciated.

I think this will not work because there is only one 'network card' in you phone, one place where the internet connection is processed. Your phone can acces the internet either via WiFi or 3G but not both at the same time just as your computer can't do LAN and WLAN at the same time
It is not possible.
10chars.
I kinda figured that. I then found this gem which solved all my problems:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1083284
Now I am just need it to support "Allow local network connecting to skip proxy" and I will be very happy. Thanks for the all the responses .
