[Q] still cant transfer apps to sd on froyo 2.2 htc desire - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi to everyone.
plz plz if any body can help me m going to become mad installing and uninstalling apps on htc desire due to low memory msg.
what i have done yet.
1.i while putin rooted official htc rom with busybox, did partition of the sd card and updated the partition to ext 2then to ext3 during the process(dont exactly remember the process name) .
2.then had app 2 sd application from market, i moved applications to sdcard but the phone memory still went down.
3.then i changed the setinstalllocation on phone through adb shell to sdcard for full apps installation to sdcard but still the phone memory goes down.
4. i also used the default apps tranfer to sdcard in froyo 2.2 but no change of low memory msg
i have literally uninstalled every new app, one or two has remained and to avoid low phone memory msg i have just kept at 15mb free.
what i do???? i am becoming mad plz help me anyone.
millions of thanks for anyhelp.
should i use rom manager for partitioning the memory card again or gparted live cd.

I don't know if someone bothered to tell you but the apps don't move completely on the sdcard. For example I use the froyo apps2sd because my card went dead 10+ times when partitioned. The google earth app is 22MB and when I "move" it to sdcard it gets to the astonishing 16MB on the main memory.
If you wish, partition the card with rom manager, do a full wipe, then try to insall the apps again and see how it goes. I hope you will be lucky

thanks for the reply freakzone,
actually whatever way i have used, the application does show that the file has moved to sdcard, the app memory itself also changes but overall the phone memory is the same with no change.and low memory msg on top.
you mean partitioning sdcard is risky should i give it a try???

It might work for you, try it, but make sure you make a backup, mine died many times

thanks alot dear, will do it when the emergency in ward gets over..

Apps2sd problem

I have had the latest MoDaCo rom running on my T-Mobile G2 touch a day after I recieved it and have to say that it out performs the stock rom by far. I have noticed a problem in the last 2 days or so which prompted me to do a clean install today but unfortunately did not resolve the problem.
I originally installed the MoDaCo rom using the guide over at the unlockr which was very simple and effective. I also decided that I would try and use apps2sd to help remove installed packages off my phone and store them on my 8GB SD. I had partitioned my sd card as the guide here suggests, I followed the code correctly by basically using copy and paste function in cmd so as to not make any mistakes and made note to update the ext2 to ext3 only as I read that the ext4 has issues with this particular rom.
I presumed everything was fine until today I noticed that when I install an app from the market store it seems to still be storing all the applications on the phone memory, I noticed the phone memory was reducing on every installation wheras the sdcard memory is untouched. Another thing I noticed is that in the sd card setting the sd card total space is being read as 7078MB wheras the partition was for a size of 7437MB. I have also accessed the data/apps folder on my phone through adb shell commands and low and behold all my apps are stored on there. There is also no folder on the sd card so there must be a problem.
I would be greatful if anyone could guide me as to any known issues with apps2sd on this particular rom or whether they can see where I might have done something incorrectly.
Many Thanks
With Aps2SD as I understand it, some parts of the programmes are still stored on the devices - system files etc. so The phone memory will change gradually.
Also, the browser and market caches still grow on the device, and need deleting via Application manager to keep the device memory as free as possible. (With Browser, clear cache, but not data as this clears your cookies and bookmarks )
Also, the apps from aps 2 SD are of course stored on the Ext3 partition. It doesn't get read at all as the SD Card in the device, as the device only sees FAT32 as SDCard space, so new apps loaded don't make a dint in the SD Memory seen on the device, or even in your PC, as this does the same thing, it doesn't see the Ext3 partition.
In My case, prior to installing MCR rom, I had around 50 apps on my device and my phone memory was reading around 70MB
After a wipe and installing MCR2.0 before loading any APPS - I was at around 155MB
After reinstalling ALL my 50 apps plus a fair few more - so around 60 apps(including some bulky apps like CoPilot - which I know stores around 8mb of its total of 15mb on the device itself to run smoothly and Docs To Go) I'm at around 120MB
So my advice is - Check your Browser and market caches. If your device has 50 or 60 apps on taking up around 30mb, then the bulk of those apps are being stored on your Ext 3 partition and its likely all running as it should.
If you have 50 or 60 apps and they are taking up closer to 80/90mb of your device storage, then aps2 SD might not have worked. - check on the thread for ROM that you have installed for advice on how to solve it.
Hope that helps
Dayz xx

First Ever HTC Phone

Hello guys,
I am very new to HTC phone and i managed to root my htc desire
using this guide nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/05/how-to-root-your-htc-desire
after root you can see in the picture i have App2sd enabled in pictures but my internal phone memory is still going lower. I have couple of gameloft games installed Ashphat 5, RealFootball, Gangster, heavy gunner and hawx and apps like astro, act1, documents to go.
I tried installing Darktremor A2SD version 2.7 but phone kept on restarting after htc logo so i rooted the phone again with nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/05/how-to-root-your-htc-desire guide.
My phone is on orange contract uk. I don't want to brick this phone.
please guide me to the right direction to install right rom with apps2sd+ or apps2sd so that every thing gets installed on sd card instead of phone memory. I have been reading this forum and Modaco forum for couple of days now. I can't get apps2sd to work properly so i can have loads of phone memory.
I have 16gb Sd card class 2 during apps2sd process i made Goldcard with sd card 4gb which came with the phone.
I don't want to brick my phone. what is the safe method?
Please guide me in right direction so i can enjoy desire more.
Sorry if i asked question which were asked before.
Thanks
I'm facing the exact same problem as yours. All the tests shows that app2sd and app2sd+ is working.
But, the internal memory still decreases. Till now, I have no idea how to solve this.
Apparently it's related to the /data/data/ folder still filling, I don't know much more past this point.
There must be another rom which has app2sd+ where application gets installed in to sd card.
I am not sure about if i should boot to some awesome roms posted here. Will try when someone who was in same situaution as me gives me thumb up to install new rom and apps2sd which works

As has been previously said, the application does get installed to the SD card. However, any "data" in /data/data is left in internal memory.
I have Copilot installed on my Desire. It takes up 18.50mb in total - 11.23mb for the application and 7.27mb for data. If I used Apps2SD, I should regain the 11.23mb, but the 7.27mb data is still in internal memory.
Regards,
Dave
I understand that some data gets installed on internal phone memory. I also read in these forum people are downloading google earth and co pilot big application and they still have over 100mb data left in internal memory. I haven't installed apps2sd+ i only have apps2sd normal when i followed this guide nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/05/how-to-root-your-htc-desire.
I wanted to know is there any other rom which has apps2sd+ which store majority data in sd but not internal rom.
Which rom do you think is better for newbie like me. Modaco customer R3 which has app2sd+ custom build or any other free rom in htc Desire Android Development thread?

[Q] Memory Storage issues and SD card Install

Hi
My phone recently received the O2 Froyo update and i have been enjoying it thoroughly. i have installed countless apps on it and as expected i started facing storage issues. I was surprised because i thought now all apps would be installed on SD card. Went in to Manage Apps section and all apps were installed on device RAM taking up any where between 10Kb to 8 Mb per each App.
Also found the transfer to SD card option. Decided to shift all apps to SDCard through this option. This did not solve my problem and its still showing the "phone storage is low alert".
What i noticed was an app that was taking up 8+mb on phone memory before transfer to SD card, only showed 200-300Kb size on SD card... Does this mean that the app is still on phone memory? should i wipe phone/SD card and install everything manually via PC?
Please help, i would like to hold on to the apps that i have on the phone.
Thanks.

when using the move to sd function on froyo, its only the apps .apk that is stored on the sd card... all the app data is still stored in the /data/data/ directory in the devices internal storage

So what is the solution?
There is no solution, you could root and flash a rom with apps2sd+

And you won't gain much more with that than with, for example, ModInstalllocation. I read that one guy reported that with app2sd+ only about 140 MB (of installed apps) went to sd card, while internal memory had been decreased by 120 MB. That's comparable with my results using stock Froyo a2sd + ModInstallLocation.
try deleting app's cache, click each app and delete the cache and then reboot phone.
You will only gain the space reclaimed by moving the dalvik cache to the ext partition.

So it will not help if i wipe/format and fresh install Apps from the PC? When i googled this some of the results showed i should be installing from PC for proper installation over SD card.
i havent found a solution yet
So any solution to storage issues? Such a shame to have a half empty 16Gb mSD Card installed and be running out of app space...
only solution Ive found is to buy a newer device with more storage space lol. Shame as I really like the Desire.
What will happen if memory gets low, will the phone slow down?

Storage is being consumed

Hi there,
I have this problem. I did noticed it just now.my phone keeps informing me there is not enough space in phone.i uninstalled few apps imstaled few other apps and so on so on.now i have only 16 Mb left.i noticed it on last app.i tried a few apps and games but after uninstallong them(via settings/manage applications) not all of the storage they have occupied have been gained aftwr uninstal.so basically some storage was lost somewhere.i cannot find any apps related files on phone and also they are write protected folders on phone memory(this is becasue i have NO root i guess).so i cannot delete the leftovers.what to do now?how to get the storage back? is this common issue? Also i have an issue that i cannot install/update apps on sd card. I have to install/move-then-update them on phone memory and then move them to sd card.for eg Mapdroyd cannot be installed.it keeps saying "could not install on usb storage or sd card" or smthng like that.i have to unmount the sd install it and then move it manually.
I am using stock 2.2.
I am considering an factory reset but i want to fix it if possible and prevent in future.
Any advice?

I had exactly the same problem with my son's Wildfire, but as I had already rooted and installed a custom ROM on my Desire to solve the same issue i was keen to root the Wildfire too. The procedure is painless (Revolutionary is a Noob friendly semi-automated process - search in the Android Development thread). I used Deep Knights ROM and now have 133Mb free space after loading loads of apps and games. Take the plunge!
