DIY Captivate Car Dock (with pictures) - Captivate Accessories

So I'm sure everyone has seen the DIY android car dock. There was a thread in here with someone wanting to make something similar (and me silently stalking it), but no one had found a suitable case to make the mount from. Well, I went on ebay and was able to find one, so here's some pics of the finished unit. Sorry there are no before pictures, I forgot to take them in my excitement.
The case cost me about $5. The other parts used were a garmin gps suction mount, the clip to hold a garmin gps, and some double sided tape. I simply used a dremel tool to cut off the ends of the gps clip to provide a flat surface, and attached it to the case with the tape. Looks somewhat ugly due to the clear case color(couldn't find a black one) but it works well, rotates, and looks good with the phone actually in it.
Well apparently I can't post external links(the images), but there's no way to upload the images here.

Looks nice. How does the Captivate fit in the case, does it just snap in? I can't see how is it mounted it on the car... vent clip?

Thanks for posting the links. Yeah, it just snaps into the case. The gps mount I'm using is the suction cup mount as it fits nicely onto my stereo face. It's just a regular garmin gps ball mount clip that I cut the ends off. It's 2 pieces, the mount, and the clip part, so you can use it with the vent mount.

Nice job. Other than the tape, it looks good. This seems to be the mod of choice for DIY car docks. I don't see why manufacturers can't seem to make this a retail product. Just a snap-on/slide-in back plate with a ball cup on the back. Anyway, thats a nice way to take your captivate for a ride!
I would like to do the same thing but my concern is the fit of the case to the phone. I want it to be snug but remove easily without scratching/damaging from repeated use.
Do you feel confident that case will hold up?
If you do, mind throwing out a brand name or model number?

My concern as well. I'd change up the mounting a bit for my car since there's a plate the previous owner mounted an XM radio head and I can't take it out without leaving an eyesore. If this can go there, my car will be /perfect/.
I'd actually prefer some sort of clear sleeve (think the "case" that comes with the N1) so that after I get my permanent case I don't have to snap it in and out of both, but if that's what it will take, I'll do it.

@Shovelhead84: Yeah, the tape isn't the best looking. I really wish the snap-on case was black, so you couldn't see it at all. It's kind of an eyesore in my mercedes without the phone in it, lol.
The case itself fits the phone pretty well, and it fits in pretty easy. It's not quite as easy to remove the phone, but still easy enough. I'm really not sure why no one is making docks like this either, all of the one's I've seen have been gigantic and ugly. I'm not worried about it damaging the phone, as the case only covers the back.
I'm not sure what the brand is since I got it off ebay, but here's a link to the exact one I bought.

Yeah, it would be nice if the phone just slid into the case. Unfortunately all of the cases I've seen snap together around the phone, so this was the first one I found that appeared to even be useable for a car mount. Hoping I'll find something a little better later. This definitely works well enough for now though, and the price was hard to beat (I had the garmin parts sitting around from my gps I don't use).

phone damage
have you noticed any scratches or scuffs from taking the phone in and out often?
i am with you waiting on that sleeve type case like in that original video

My Car Mount Solution

This is what i did.
Bought This car mount
Used "WOOT"(without ") to get 20$ off.
Shipping Cost: $5.00
Grand Total: $9.99
then i bought This cover to put the disk on
used "30htcoff" to get 30% off HTC Accessories
Total : US $7.04
grand total for a car mount...
17.03$
I have the same mount. works ok. instructions say mount the disk on the upper portion of the case, i found the middle works better if you intend on using landscape mode for GPS or Video. If you put it near the top, it doesnt stay in landscape mode for long, it slips down.
I use something similar, but more flush against the car surface for the Evo.
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-UNIVERSAL-M...ccessories&hash=item45e943669b#ht_3019wt_1139
I tried the cheap car mount, but without the case. The disk adhesive wouldn't stick to the back of my EVO at all. Whenever I tried to lock the disk into the holder, it'd just twist off.

How easy/tough is the crystal hard case to put on and remove? Everytime you get in the car, you'd have to put the phone in the case, and take it out of it, when you get out, right?

I haven't gotten it yet. But i don't think that it'll be a major problem. It goes over the existing case. So i'm just going to put the disk on the clear cover, put that on the mount and whenever i get in my car just put it in the case.
I just ordered a Seidio active case and the mount that the OP linked. I'm hoping that disc is small enough to not annoy me if it's on the case all the time, but we'll see I guess. I'm afraid it's going to cause some wobbling issues when the phone is sitting face up on my desk.
Edit: I was just thinking, it would be pretty stellar if seidio offered an "exoskeleton only" type of sale so you could just throw the disc on an extra skeleton to slip on when in the car only... Wishful thinking I'm sure.
What do you guys think about this idea..
Get the same SoundGate mount but stuck the disc on the outer shell/exoskeleton of this two-piece case.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=699888
Then keep the exoskeleton in the car and when you want to use it as a mount just pop it into place..
I don't know how it feels in the hand without the exoskeleton though, and it wont be as secure but I had no intention of getting a case that strong, just a silicone one.
My main gripe is that I don't want to have a disc on my phone all the time...
edit: LOL just read the last post, seems like you were thinking the same thing..
Someone should contact seidio about that.

This is the setup I'm using with that exact case. I did have a problem with the disk sticking like someone mentioned earlier (I believe because of the ruberized texture on the case) so I epoxied the disk to the back. I can post picks of my setup tomorrow. Maybe a vid too.
That'd be wonderful.
I feel like without the exo it'll look bad...
So a good video or couple pictures would be great, maybe even a short review. xD

i bought a 4 finger capture (for the phone) with a swivel mount for $15 at AutoZone. dam swivel didn't work so i had to add some Metal putty to harden the swivel in place. $5
then when i stuck it to the windshield the glue on the pad to the mount came apart from the heat in the car. super glued it for $3. then the pad's glue to the windshield came apart because of the heat and weight. so i super glued it to the windhield.
with the 4 fingers it grabs the EVO good enoungh that it doesn't fall out AND i can drive around and shot a video of where i'm going. i offset the EVO a tad so the camera has a clear view.
i mounted it to the top of the windshield where the polarized screen is and the videos are coming out pretty good - no blown out skies and the clouds are pretty good. now there is a bright line blowning out the sky and clouds when driving up hill but i can live with that.

Work's been busy the last few days and I've been too wiped to do anything after, so hopefully I can put something up tomorrow.
Update: the car was pretty hot the other day and when I went to put my phone in the "dock" the adhesive had softened up and the holder fell off of my mount, so I think I will be getting the epoxy out again.

The PERFECT car mount

I just had a tinkering revelation and ended up making something in 30 seconds that i have been looking for for weeks.
Originally inspired by the car dock epoplive made as well as khaaan on Overclockers UK forums, I cut out the intermediary step of finding a case that the phone can snap in and out of easily. I ordered a suction cup mount for a Garmin Nuvi 205 off ebay for $4:
cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270626403250&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_2572wt_1137
When I got it this afternoon, I took a look at the clip that is meant to hold the Garmin unit and thought that it looked quite close to the dimensions of the Captivate. Holding the phone in it, it was about 1/2" - 3/4" too wide. So I simply took a lighter, slowly and gently heated up the corners of the clip, and bent them slightly inwards. Out of luck, my guesswork bending resulted in a perfect fit. I added some thin sticky-back foam strips to make the fit more secure, and that's it!
The phone snaps in with purpose and is held in place even as I flail about testing it. It looks super clean, works well, was easy to make and cost a total of $4.
(The pictures were taken with my old E71x; when I find the charger for my point-and-shoot, I can get some better quality pictures up.)

Enjoy! I am happy to hear any criticism, answer and questions, etc.!
Nice! I'm doing one too!
Great mount.
I think you did a great job. I've been looking for one for a while. What if you have a silicon case? Would it still lock?
If so, you wouldn't need the foam.

That was one of my first thoughts. I just returned my bodyglove case, but it seems like it would work just as well, you will just need to bend the clip just a little bit less to compensate. One thing I should tell you, you may need to modify the clip in such a way that the ridges that hold the device are further *out* to compensate for the added depth of a silicon case too.
Nice! Good job.
Nice! I may have to go get a new car clip to try this. It's kind of funny, because the first thing I thought about the clip was 'Boy, this sure is close to the size of the phone, if only it was just a bit smaller'.
Does the phone stay in when you rotate it?
Yes! I just drive for about a half hour on back roads with the phone in portrait and it didn't move one bit. Did you see my "flail test" video?
awesome!
Exactly what I was looking for.
I'm interested to see if someone gets this working with the bodyglove silicone case...

So is ebay out of the question for you? There are plenty for sub-$3 on there.
I looked at Staples a couple weeks ago and they have just the ball joint and suction cup (no actual clip) for I think $14.99 - outrageous.
Awesome! I just order two. Thanks for the tip!
Does this scratch the sides at all from being clipped in and out so often or did you put foam on the clips where the phone would touch as well?
just ordered one... think i will pop off the ball joint and drill a screw through the center and attach to my pivoting blackberry 9700 proclipusa mount in my car. That way i got the pivot and it is mounted and not on the glass.
will update with pictures... will probably still order the proclip when it is released...
Surprisingly enough, it is out of the question. I've no credit card. With amazon i can use a coinstar to create gift cards. And in person i can use cash or a check.

No foam on the clips. The plastic is smooth, since it is where the gps would clip in. I don't see any trace of damage in the phone (and believe me, I would notice. Still babying this phone)

Proclip mount shipping - works with extended battery!

Good news for all you Proclip fans,
I just recieved mine today and it works with the Samsung Extended battery just as well as the standard battery. There is a 1/2 in space behind the phone that should allow for even the most extreme extended batteries to fit as long as the battery cover does not extend beyond where the original battery cover fits (like if it wraps around the side of the phone it will not fit).
I ordered Proclip part number 513331 (Hard wired install).
Proclip doesn't disappoint either, this mount is just as awesome as the one for my old DINC. Nice and sturdy.
I'll post some pics later when I get it installed.
As is typical with proclip mounts, the mount is designed based on the physical dimensions of the phone (specifically the sides of the phone) so cases that change those dimensions will cause the phone to not fit in the grooves correctly.
Pix of the proclip in action
Grabbed a couple of pics for anyone interested.
Looks good, I had the incredible one too, but imo it was a little to hard to get in and out. Unfortunately since I already chipped my phone, I'm too scared to go naked with this phone. Plus their price is just too high for me.

I wont argue that they are spendy - I already had the base part but it's like $100 for both pieces for newbies.
But I do get something that no other mount has been able to offer me - this one is wired into the car, I can use only one hand to put my phone in it, and it doesn't fall or move when I press too hard. Considering the Verizon one is $40 and a POS it seemed worth the extra.
But yea if you have a case it's not so good.
does you phone fall if you turn the screen for navigation ?
I just ordered Proclip's adjustable mount 875214. Hopefully it will work well with my diztronic case. It grips near the bottom of the phone so it shouldn't interfere with any of the buttons or ports. I'll update after it arrives with the results!

Well for those who aren't aware, these Proclip holders come in 2 pieces: The first is a custom-fit bracket for your particular vehicle, and the other is the actual phone holder.
So let me start with the holder. The one I got is adjustable and holds my Galaxy Nexus with Diztronic case extremely well. It's snug but not difficult to remove, and leaves plenty of room behind the phone for the craziest of extended batteries. A+
Then there's the mounting bracket... I selected 853616 for my '07 Impreza. It hooked in behind the panel just fine and it is made of the same plastic as the holder which was nicer than I expected.
Unfortunately, it goes downhill from here: This particular bracket is a bad fit. All the angles are off, and as a result the adhesive backed sections do not contact the vehicle properly. Even if they did, the adhesive is so weak that I'm not sure it would stick. I'm going to have to pull it all apart and go to work with some thick double-sided adhesive tape of my own in order to deal with the gaps and get it installed properly. Not cool, especially considering the whole kit ended up costing me about $60. Now, there's lots of different brackets for lots of different cars out there, so your mileage may vary.
At any rate, it does a much better job holding the phone than my cupholder did.
Got mine a couple of days ago.
As has been noted, they come in two pieces. The piece that holds the phone is very, very nice and will definitely work with any reasonable extended battery. It's very snug, but not too snug, and the fit is perfect. I got one of the powered versions and it's fantastic.
The car mount piece, for me, is of similar quality. The fit is near stock and the thing is damn near impossible to remove.
As a unit, the two pieces are rock solid.
Highly recommended. I wouldn't hold out for the Samsung three pin holder. I had that same holder (minus the three pins, obviously) for my Nexus S - and this one is far, far, far better.

How snug of a fit is it? I have Verizon galaxy nexus with extended battery and Diztronic case. Does it take quite a bit of pressure to put it in the holder? Also, is the headphone jack open at the bottom?

That's what I had to do for my wife's Civic. She got the car mount that affixes to the center console and that one piece of double sided tape just wasn't cutting it. I used a heat gun to remove the factory tape and then liberally applied tape to all parts contacting the console. It's been holding steady for over a year.
Proclip should probably give people more sticky tape - but I think the reason they only use a single piece is because they tout that the proclip doesn't damage the car and it could be argued that uber liberal amounts of double-sided sticky tape could potentially damage some surfaces. In the civic it’s all plastic so it’s NBD to use a heat gun and remove any residue, but if was a BMW with an oak dash then I could see people complaining.

I don't think any case would work with the proclip because it is a very snug fit and yes it takes a fair amount of pressure to put it in. Not so much that it will move the dock but certainly enough to keep the phone from coming out accidentally.
The only reason the extended battery works is because there is nearly a 1 inch opening behind the phone and the battery cover does not extend to the edge.
Yes the headphone jack is open but you would need a connector that is straight. A 90 degree connector would not work.

S3 Suction car mount by Garmin!!

By pure chance I found out that my SIII with its slimline cover fitted works perfectly in my Garmin Nuvi 205 dash mount.
Secure and easy to mount, almost as if it was made for the S3.
The Garmin Part Number
Item 010-10936-00 Suction cup with bracket (Nuvi 2xx series)
Cost is around $10 - %15
Cover is a Cygnet BlackFrost Matte slim case (around $20)
I love finding a really good cost effective solution for my toys!!
Video Clip. Please excuse poor sound quality, had to dig out my old Olympus compact to make this,
Thanks, looking forward to the video.
good to know since Garmin has quality mounts.
Does it actually clip in? Is it firm?
If you remove the case, hows the fit?
Fits snugly, clips into the mount as if it was made for it,
Doesn't work without the cover though, phone is just to small,
Would be possible rather easily I might add to put some shrink tubing on the arms of the mount and build it up a little to hold the phone naked!
I wonder if it would fit with a tpu case. Your case seems pretty slim

Thanks for the find. Do you think it would be able to fit the S3 with an Otterbox Commuter case on? My phone's approximately 7.7mm wide with the case on.
Cheers
Might fit but it would be tight, the rounded edges of the Cygnett case allows it to clip into the holder the otter box might be to square

You should get a replacement one...They are super cheap on eBay. I have one that is over 7 years old (*back when standalone GPS units were +$300!) and it still works great.

couldn't have said it better myself!!!!
I can confirm this mount works great with the rock quicksand case. Easy to put in and take out and holds rock solid. Before the case showed up I had used a couple pieces of heat shrink tubing held on with electrical tape and it worked awesome with the naked galaxy s3.
I like this style of mount because you can position the phone with it gripping the middle, top or bottom to fine tune where the screen is in relation to your windshield.
I went with this one though, instead of one of the $5 options: (replace spaces with ., I don't have enough posts to post links) www amazon com/gp/product/B0042PJ8NY/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00[/url]
It's the actual oem garmin mount instead of a knockoff, and judging by the reviews the difference is the mount that holds the ball is made of metal, so it won't break. It came with one of the 3m PE Foam adhesive backed discs for mounting to the dashboard as well. Highly recommended.
I just tried it. PERFECT fit with my diztronic TPU case. Thanks OP!

[Mini-Review] Winnergear Montar Universal Car Mount-Nexus 5

Winnergear asked me to do my mini-review on the Montar Universal car mount and I obliged . Being I do a lot of accessory reviews here to give back to the great XDA community, here is another one for ya. I know there's another thread about it, but I didn't want this post get buried in the thread so....
I got this yesterday and decided to do a day of testing before doing one of my reviews. I usually just pop the box open and post pretty much right away . But not this time! I was busy at work anyways lol.
First off, the box is the normal boxes that you see from time to time and it is a nice small frame box, but in transit, if not boxed, will be damaged in transit. The mount includes a mounting disk for your dash for even more sticky-ness. I already have one installed due to my old gps units.
When I first tried it out in the truck, I peeled off the protective cover of the adhesive sticky pad side, which is a lot like the Nexus Wireless charger backing. Once you feel it loses any tackyness, just wipe with a damp paper towl and it's magically refreshed. I placed it on my dash plate and it immediately stuck. Pushed down the lever to anchor it and this thing is not coming off! It will tear off my dash plate before coming off. Really impressive.
I currently have a Seidio Ledger flip case and was curious in how this universal would fare with it on. I thought, because of the grippy rubber red "teeth" it should grab and hold anything you throw at it. Was I right? Yep lol. Ok that is pretty cool. Using a flip case and placing the flap on the back or even have the hinge side of the case facing down and letting the cover flap open with gravity. Either way works and works well. The phone is not dropping from this device.
Before moving on, the base is nice and sturdy and the ball joint is maneuverable and can do a 360. Smooth operating. You just unscrew the area where the ball joint is and then adjust accordingly. What I usually do is just unscrew it just enough where it can move around pretty well and then when satisfied screw the joint adjuster until tight so the phone won't flop around. Another thing is that the grips open on both sides. So you can do a one handed mount. I have not perfected the one handed dismount yet, but that's fine lol.
Anyways, the phone is pretty much anchored where ever you place it. Overall, this a premium universal mount, if you can call it that lol. I can see this fitting many many type of cases without any issue. And the sticky mount is the best I have tried so far in the car. Can I recommend this? Well it is a premium device as I said, so the cost of the mount is around $35 USD. Not too high up, to me just at the top side of my range on what I would spend on a dash mount. Being this a really good one, I feel good recommending it to anyone that is willing to pay for what you get. A solid universal mount that will last past this N5 and many others IMO.
Pros:
Size is middle range.
Can pivot 360 so you can see your device at any angle.
Rubber teeth holds firm
Sticky pad is VERY sticky.
Cons:
Sticky pad can get dusty really really really fast.
Color is shiny gloss black like other car mounts I have used with the exception of the Xenomix brands which are matte black, but much more expensive. As a result, can get scuffed like mine is on the back side.
Wishlist:
Cord management
Or ability to house a wireless charger pad by an insert or different "grip".Not an engineer, sorry lol.
Recommend? Yes over any Arkon mount you can throw at it. For being that I can get it in the US pretty fast, I can recommend this. Will I stop using my Kenu Airframe? Probably not, but this is a great alternative.
Any questions, please ask away! Oh I'll be getting a Spigen SGP Neo Hybrid case where I can test with that on as well. I don't foresee any problems, but just a FYI.

Might be a strange question, but has anyone actually bought a Montar mount and received it? It seems like every review I have seen was when Montar has sent the person one to review. I tried to order one last year and I found a lot of negative feedback about the company claiming they never received their item or it took months for them to actually get it. I ended up buying a similar mount on Amazon. But yeah, just curious has anyone actually bought one from them and what was the service like?
EDIT: Sorry, disregard my post. I just saw your Amazon link. When I originally was going to order it it wasn't on Amazon but on their own site which is what was getting negative feedback.
I received mine long time ago ... Amazing mount , built to last ...
Nice review. Thanks
no doubt .. it's the best !
+1
Can you give us the measurements of the dock? I'm mainly after the height and also the max width of the grip. I have a 9cm mat that I want to mount if possible. Thanks!
Nice
