I'm looking for an app that... (users help users suggest apps) - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was thinking about this at work tonight. I don't know how well received this topic with be either. The purpose of this topic is to consolidate questions from users that are looking for an app that fits their need with suggestions from other people. I know that one person could not possibly know all the apps and games out there. Maybe you could suggest something you have seen, used, or are using now with fellow users that can't seem to find an app that does what they want to accomplish. This does not mean that if someone suggests something, that they have to teach someone how to use the program too (unless they don't mind helping them get set up or warning them about possible snafus). Sometimes there are apps that aren't in the market but on a website somewhere, and are great to have. For example, Music Junk, is a good prog to dl music (cough, cough). Google music junk android and I'm sure you will find the dev's site.
Anyways, I don't know how well of an idea this is but at least it's an attempt to help others out. I will be watching this thread as long as it stays on the first page or two of this section.

There was an app called paul's app of the day, lots of people use it, paul must be a popular guy.. idk.. looks like he's from Madaco forums.. but it did have some apps that we all know already.. but one or two that I never thought to check out. i did remove it after a week or so.. don't like to have too many apps if I don't use them.

AppBrain will suggest stuff based off what you have installed and what other users have installed in comparison to you. If I have x, Y, and Z and you have X and Y it will suggest Z.
FWIW - Paul O'Brien is the founder of MODACO...I follow him on twitter - he's like a Cyanogen in the UK. was big into G1 dev, I think he supports several devices, and did support the Hero when we first started getting roms on it.

A couple of places every dash owner should favorite

Hey everyone, there are a couple of great places to look for help on the Dash/Excalibur. And i've created this thread just to show people where some other problems have been solved.
First, go to the htcwiki, which has a 30 page long FAQ and hacks which fixes almost every problem with the dash, and brings it to it's real potential.
http://www.htcwiki.com/page/The+Dash+FAQ
Second, go to http://surrealnetworks.com/mpx/DashApps.htm to download some freeware applications that everyone else has. Make sure you application unlock and throw the new .net cf 2.0 just to make sure everything compatible.
This are some basic dash things everyone will know. Using these places and the xda forum's great job of finding assistance, we can make the dash awsome
not sure if you want others posting but I got a few pages...
Same site as one you posted but different page,
http://www.surrealnetworks.com/mpx/SDARegEdits.htm
and..
http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?postid=8109625
For SDA but some work for Dash..
http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=858861
of course people can post here, i just want people to get the right help.
Sometimes surrealnetworks is down. If so try the above addy's but use surrealnetworks.net instead of .com
you're right, one of them should work at all times
just making sure...
QUsers has tons of homescreens and most software that will run on the q will run on the dash so i look there from time to time.
http://www.qusers.com/forum/
At Howard Forums there are three forums to watch. HTC Forum, General Smartphone Forum and TMobile/Windows Mobile Forum.
Modaco Forums cover some good apps in their customization forum.
By far the most important thing to do is read the whole faq at htc, then start reading the forums. Using the faq and surreal networks get the phone app unlocked and slowly start adding programs that you think you need. Take your time and use one for a few days before adding another. This way you know if that prog is conflicting with anything on the phone.

Backing Up Everything

Apologies if this appears elsewhere but I have looked without success. If it does then a link to the solution would be great.
Basically I found this site a few weeks ago and since then have been tinkering with my phone. I've tried various roms, added different programs, played about with the settings and so on. Today I have finally got it just how I want it. It is overclocked to run quickly but safely. The today screen is perfect. It contains everything I need including my huge list of contacts. And my theme is spot-on. However usually in life when everything is right something big and hairy appears out of nowhere and dumps on you. Its got to the point where I panic every time I turn it on just in case it crashes and I need to start all over again.
My question therefore is if anyone knows of a utility (or can give detailed instructions) to completely back up the phone. Right down to the user settings, theme and contacts. If possible maybe even to create a rom image of my phone so that if it does ever crash I can reinstall the whole thing from one simple file. I assume this sort of thing must be possible because Kavana and Ricky produce such wonderful roms with various programs, etc pre-installed.
Can it be done? And if so - can it be done by an enthusiastic amateur or do you need to be a tech guru? I should add I don't mind paying if I need to buy a piece of commercial software to achieve this.

Did you even bother to search google for "smartphone backup" ? The very first link that comes up, takes you right to the software you say you need. I apologize for being harsh, but I hate the lack of common sense...
An option
Not sure about the cooked 6.1 Roms. Maybe someone else might know or have tried.
http://www.spritesoftware.com/
I use this and it's well worth it.
if u just mean the saved registry values and what not u can always export the registry so that way if u have to hard reset the phone or if a new amazingly wowlike rom is released and u NEED to flash u can always import the registry values of the chomes and it'll be the way u left it (thats what I do for my myfaves and my programs)

No problem, and you are entitled to your opinion. however its replies like that which stop people making posts to forums like this. Everyone has to start somewhere, and one man's obvious "common sense" answer is another man's dilemma.
As for using google... yep I could have done that but google links to hundreds of pages, some owned by people trying to sell software which obviously means they won't be objective. Others have methods which could damage a phone and because I don't know the writers how do I know which methods to trust? Ergo I decided to come to site I know, with people whose technical knowhow I trust, and to search the forum and then ask them for advice. To me, that is common sense. Isn't that one of the reasons that places like this exist? So non techheads can ask guys like you for help?
No offence intended and, for what its worth, you are one of the guys whose advice on this forum has helped me countless times. So thank you for that no matter what. Without your posts I'd never have got this far in the first place! I mean that.
As for the other replies... thanks guys. I will look into the registry stuff. And I will certainly check out the software link. If I do find some info on google, I hope you folks will help me pick the best method to use and avoid bad advice.
Thanks again.
GS
Okay the Sprite software is perfect. And now I've checked it out maybe my question was a stupid one. Still, its nice to have a recommendation from an independent source. I've been burnt in the past by bad google advice.
Sorry if I've wasted anyone's time.

htc clock widget

ok so im trying to figure out how to edit the htc clock widget to open a different clock like desk clock. can this be done?
def's uncommon rom is the only one that i know of that does it. good luck getting him to tell you how. def is one of my favorite dev, i'm not calling him out. all the dev keep there findings to them selves really.
question... how come people don't share there tweeks and hacks anymore?
i remember full threads on reg edits, tweeks, and hacks, that people would share with the world. I actually had threads where i would take requests, and cab them up for people to be able to install easily.
big difference between the WM day to the current droid days.

^be very nice if this were the case. As fully customisable, unique rom, suited to your needs.

i sent a pm to the owner of the rom and i am awaiting a reply back. im not trying to take credit for something i just dont want to have to run beautiful widgets when i spent all the time on making custom flip clocks.

That is a very ****-headed thing to say. I am MORE than willing to help anyone out with reproducing ANY of my mods. I keep nothing secret, and I literally JUST replied to the OP's PM, just before reading your completely asinine comment. My PM box is FULL of questions AND answers with guidance on duplicating mods. Truth be told, I do not POST these modifications and how-to in their own threads for one reason only. I do not have the time to support them.
ok so i can find where the activity is and change it but when i push to the phone nothing changes...

Def, I was not trying to be a **** head and don't see that my post directed anything negative towards you. I was iust stating that a few years ago, members in the Windows mobile forums shared everything. Infact, there were http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/windows-mobile-hacks-tweaks/ forums just for regedits and hacks. I don't find that on the 2010 Android forums.
I didnt mention the guy who posted a zip file that was able to put the 6 bar signal meter in the task bar. He clearly stated that he pulled it out of your Rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8758884&postcount=22 Then your reply saying something about you not liking what he did. To me that said the Android developers didn't want the secret out of the bag. It's not just you. I have ran quite a few roms and really liked certain parts, but didn't keep it for the fact that I didn't like other parts. I have searched for ways to get just the good hacks and tweeks, but there just not there.
For the record..... I am sorry Def. I was not saying that your bad for not posting everything you do. I was just trying to say that there's a good chance he will not get the information he seeks. That's just the way Android forums are going these days.
here is a couple thing i would like to add to my roms, but cant find information on them. correct me if i'm wrong, but people just dont share this stuff.
1. 6 bar signal
2. htc clock widget launching vanilla clock
3. app drawer 5 icons wide,
4. battery percentage in battery icon
yes, def's roms have all of these. that is why i run his rom. at least until he bans me from his roms due to this thread.

Well I would like to say he got me started and I found where the attribute is for opening world clock and I have changed it to deskclock but I think I'm doing something wrong with the apk tool because when I push it to the phone and launch it still opens world clock but in the files its self it says deskclock. I wish I knew more about the Android language but sadly I don't and I'm going to keep trying.

i am am really glad to see people like def who is trying to help others instead of just posting there roms.
I am 38 years old, married with 4 kids. i have been on the forums for a long time and know what and how they work. i was not trying to start anything, i love helping people and learning. that is why i like the forums.
i have made 2 apps for windows mobile and never thought of charging for them. one of the apps had over 20,000 downloads. my favorite thing to do was help people learn to make there own.
back on topic....
i would really like to have a zip to flash this htc clock mod. it is one of my favorite parts of def's uncommon rom. i dont have the time anymore to learn a lot of coding. at least i don't think so. kind of new to android so i dont know if it's easy or not. flashing zip files is easy. lol.
^ That would be pretty sweet! Wish everything was easy as flashing a zip.

Missing Order & Chaos Online in Market

Hello everyone. It's my first post so I'm supposed to say something more bout me. All I can say so far is I'm new into android device but I had updated my Desire FW to 2.3.3 GB.
Let's back to the topic. I'm literally dying to play this game as it's one of my fav types so far. I can't download it from Market, can't deceive market that I'm using other phone (trying to edit build.prop but it didnt work at all). I have rooted my phone as well to do those mentioned. I won't give up because everybody know as a fact it's possible to play this game on our Desires and it's quite rude of Gameloft they 'don't support our phones' (their official website don't, I'd try it as well). Desire S is almost like a twin (but quite younger ).
I apologize if this threat has been mentioned before, I used seach feature and didn't find anything special.
If you guys know how to solve this problem (I'm fighting this 3rd day actually) please let me know in this thread or either pm.
Try MarketEnabler from the market.
I found a way out of this misery. I actually purchased a game for other device (DS in that case). It works perfect, no lag, no dc's. Just brilliant
If somebody will find it useful and has quite similar problem as me, try to do it on gameloft.com . I have this game cheaper than the market (£3.00) and it's just a text with link to game download which starts automatically. It's just .apk so it should be working whatever your device is.

[REQ] Mms CM 10.1

I need CM 10.1 mms inverted with Easy Selector like one in CarbonRom 1.7.....thanks!
http://www.2shared.com/file/nviJ5ZO9/Mms.html
No one won't help me?... Why?....... bicouse I am only fat boy?... here is apk file... Need be only inverted
Stupid life
Well... Some one is self conscious..
No one replied because of the way you demand.
I've seen your post once it was up, but didn't reply because of the following reasons:
1) you gave absolutely no information about your current rom (Sammy, aosp, cm), android version (4.0.4, 4.1.2, 4.2)
This alone is a great reason not to answer, because we need to know what version of the mms.apk you need.
2) but in my opinion the biggest reason is the way that you ask, you made it appear as of we (the fine people of xda) are here to help you on-demand.
Most of us here are simple users enjoying the work of great developers, moders and themers. They put in a lot of their free time to allow us to have the best possible experience with our phones, and yet some people make them feel as if they are here to do some sort of volunteer work for the mentally disabled (no offense intended to anyone).
My point being that it's appreciated when people, at the very least, search for what they want. It has, in most cases, already been created.
I don't mean to say that you haven't done any type of searching, what I'm implying is that the way you formatted your post looks as if you you haven't even bother to look for it without asking first.
If you didn't search, next time try to formulate the post as follows:
"I'm looking for a modded mms.apk from cm 10.1 with the inverted theme. I'm running 4.x.x and I'm on the xxxxxxx Rom (replace X with actual info) I've tried to search on Google and (somehow) I've not found it. Any help is greatly appreciated."
The difference between your post and mine is that when people read it they see a person that is somehow bad at searching the Web, but has tried, they see what rom I'm on and what android version that rom is running.
With that information, they can (if they so wish to do so) much more easily get the post that they might have recalled seeing it on and send you a link.
Those are my points, perhaps some one else can give you some more details as to what they personally think is wrong with it.
The people of xda (for the most part) are very helpful to each other, but no one wants to spoon feed some one else because that some one else is lazy to even bother searching.
I hope that this post has helped you in your future of xda (if you so wish to stay). This information works on pretty much any forum.
I want trying to be evil in any way, just simply trying to guide you in a better direction.
(sorry for any typos, but typing this much on a phone can be hard)
