[Q] Search for developpers - Windows Phone 7 Software Development

Hi,
I want to make some applications for WP7.
Design and idea is not the problem... the real problem is developping, writing, programming... wich leaves me blank out of the game...
I allready have some designs for games or applications, just need someone or some people to help putting the app or game to work / run on WP7
If interested please PM.
I have a background in design, and graphics.

Yeah I have a great idea for a book but no real experience with the English language, is anybody here a writer that can write a book based on my idea? I can do the cover art.

Hello,
i would like to start windows 7 mobile software development. I am complete newbie on this.
Could you please post any tutorials (links) to start programming for windows 7 mobile for begginers?

lol. this is funny

Hello, I'm looking for someone to start a company with. I have an idea but no money or aspiration. I just need someone that can do all administration and other work. My idea is ready and i can draw a picture of an elephant to promote it, so that's no problem at all. I also went to school once.

I declare this thread epic, as I wait for the UPS truck to arrive with my T-Mobile G2...

There is a new WindowsPhone 7 developers forum managed by MVP's. Soon they will post, samples and info about Windows Phone Development.
Should be a good start in the future :
http://www.windowsphone7developer.com/

Although I found a lot of humor in this, I also felt somewhat annoyed by the poster's question. My honest answer is to start the way everyone else starts.
Option 1:
Learn through Google, Wiki, forums, and Ask.com tutorials.
Option 2:
Mess around with Visual Basic until you can write what you want.
Option 3:
Take classes
A hint is that if you don't understand the concepts after the first two options, give up. It either comes to you or it doesn't. Don't waste money on classes because you'll also have to take math classes (I'm guessing that you don't learn useful math in graphical design).
Hope I have helped.
Regards,
Anthony

REQ: Tipulator

Hi has anyone seen the Iphone ad running in the UK at the moment which has a handy app on it called the tipulator.
This is a simple calculator in which you type in the total amount of your restaurant bill then how much in percentage how much you want to tip then choose how many people you want to split the bill between and it tells you what each person has to pay.
I'm sure this would be pretty simple to build on the WM platform - has anyone seen anything like this?
Ye I second that. Would be a good idea.
I just use me brain. Time I got the HD app to do it, I'd have figured it out in my head!!
Just wondering if you even searched on Google? Because in less than 2 minutes i found these.
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-tips-calculator-v1-0.html
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-tip-calculator-and-bill-splitter-1-0.html
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-simple-tip-calculator-v1-0.html
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-tip-pro-v1-0.html
Or just the normal calculator...
Hmmm sounds like another excuse for iPhone owners to get their phone out and bore people stupid with how wonderful they think its is... the resturant as well as the pub now...
I'll stick to me head.... probably good but how difficault is 10%?

Same here.

wow - you need a special application to calculate total bill x 1.1 / people? What's wrong with the calculator?
I knew iPhone users can't think for themselves but we're supposed to be the smart ones.

Some people are obviously very lazy...
there is an iphone app for absolutely everything , and most of it is pointless, like the spirit level which is actually just the gsensor calibrate screen on the touch hd , there may be apps but good quality apps is what matters so let them have there mass load of rubbish, once we get a few 3d games we'll be laughin
We have freekin excel in our pockets you can calculate almost anything!
F Me! You are a miserable bunch of b*stards
I think its a pretty good idea. There are plenty of people out there who do not know how to reprogram a WM phone. Sory I'll rephrase - not SAD enough to know how to reprogram a WM phone!
So a neat little app like the tipulator is probably quite appealing.
"Oh we can't have that *geeky chortle chortle* why can't you write a few formulae in MS pocket excel" - Jeez, give me strength!
If I went out for a meal with a group of people and someone used excel to calculate the split, I'd think they were a complete tosser, and tell them so.
But then most of you aren't old enough to go into a pub let alone go out for a meal and not have your parents pay for it.
So I'll "third" the proposal.
stop making waves!
of course i am not expecting from someone that is preaching us about laziness to bother and make a search so i did and found in less than 15 seconds this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=499829&highlight=tip+calculator
see, i used the search button and made the great effort of typing 2 words: tip calculator. well, i'll do anything for a little peace and order in this forum

Firstly if your asking for help then ask for it don't assault the people who could be programming this for you!
Secondly excel does exactly what you want it to do, if your too stupid to write a simple percentage calculation then your too thick to own a WM phone!
Thirdly I'm a comfortable programmer, I do it as part of my job, but I do have a life, I'm surrounded by good, intelligible friends, I enjoy power kiting and surfing, I probably have a much better life than you!
Fourthly if you think someone's a tosser for using a WM application (Excel) to calculate the tip then you MUST think they would be a tosser for using an identical application that someone's put on their device but with pretty pictures so rambling buttock scrapings like yourselve can use it without confusion!
Finally learn to use the search facillity it's really very simple, I also hear Google do these searches aswell!
So don't sign up to a developer forum calling all the developers misserable Bas*ards!
Don't retalliate with a barrage of insults when people try to help you!
And don't post without searching!
Oh yeh and I'm 22 more than old enough to drink in this country!
Just realised hurst didn't start this, sorry to the thread starter and hurst you're a gimp!
@joey
don't feed the troll! an undeserved effort to try and explain something to "his kind".
he doesn't know to use google and u are asking him to use excel??!! imagine asking him to make the calculation using his head....lol! another rude a..s hole!
did you guys miss my post in the previous page? I posted a bunch of tip programs.
I dont think anyone really wants a "tipulator" cos its useless. More useful would be the bill splitting thing that they showed on the iphone advert. I know its another thing from the iphone n stuff....but that is actually gd unlike half the apps from the apple store.
Has anyone got anything like that already? if yes then pls share with us!

Hey
Here Free Printable Sketching, Wireframing and Note-Taking PDF Templates you got some ideas sheets, sketchings, wireframings for iPhone and Android. I think this is good start for creating other templates for Windows Phone 7.
Well, the sheet aren't to useful for application in the Metro layout, and certainly not if you decide to go with a panorama layout.
Normal pen and paper is more ideal here, but I could imagine making some pre-prints of a 1920x800 sketches could be useful.
As for more detailed mock-ups the Sketchflow in Expression Blend 4 is really the ideal tool. I'll recommend checking it out, if you haven't already.

WP7 app development - Any advice on getting started?

Hey there, thanks for reading.
I decided that I want to learn how to program apps and possibly games for WP7.
Because my holidays are almost starting, now's the time for me to do so.
I already have Visual Studio for Windows Phone up and running, and I encountered the getting started pages on the official silverlight website.
However, it kinda feels like being thrown into the deep and having to do everything in one big leap, instead of being able to start with basics and then move on in smaller steps.
Does any of you have advice for me on what would be good ways to get started? Any advice is appreciated.
I do have vast experience with PHP, but I believe that the syntax is completely different from SL.
Thanks in advance!
My advice would be to learn the basics of c# first. Any previous online tutorials for c# apply to windows phone 7. There are some minor differences but the basics are the same.
Check out http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsphone7series/threads which is the official forums for Windows Phone 7 and there's a lot of good info there.
The code samples at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff431744(VS.92).aspx are also worth playing around with.
Ideally you want to know C# for a starters. There's plenty of tutorials on MSDN or the web, but I can also recommend buying the book: Pro C# 2010 and the .NET Platform from Apress.
It's learns you the language, and also goes over XAML related technologies, and even though it's mostly WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) the core principles apply for Silverlight as well.
After you learned C#, it's time to learn Sivlerlight in dept, and by this I mean XAML, and the limitations in the .NET subset used for Silverlight.
For tools you wish to get Visual Studio 2010 Express, and Expression Blend 4. You can get the Release Candidate free for now, to try out development.
Make a note of that your computer need to support hardware-visualization to run the emulator without a incredible amount of lag!
If you're used to programming you might quickly learn Visual Studio, but Expression Blend requires a good amount of time to get used to. I'll recommend setting off a weekend where you use 2x8 hours to learn it.
You'll be using both Visual Studio and Expression Blend at the same time, C# for application-logic (ie. C# code) and Blend for design.
Designing in Blend is really simple, see for example expressionblend.png.
One of the articles I want to recommend you to read once you got into this entire XAML thing, is this article explaining how to do paging, as it's one of the core concepts, but also provides a good exercise in using Expression Blend.
Also, to get a handle of the basics, Microsoft has put together a site to encourage people to get involved with WP7 and Silverlight. The website is: http://www.microsoft.com/design/toolbox/
Its a real beginners course to all the programming one will be involved in on the WP7 platform. This won't get you very far in programming, but will teach you the absolute basics. From there you can always get assistance from the great members of XDA (me excluded)
Pretty cool site. Now we just need them to release a free-WP7 version of Expression Blend.
The current process to get started is way to messy, but I guess they already know that
Allright, thanks for these replies
My holidays are (unofficialy) starting in three days, so I'll have plenty of time available.
Luckily my rig runs the emulator buttersmooth (I ran the unlocked WP7 rom with it, to try the OS in it's current state) so that won't be an issue.
These links should get me going in the right direction (H)
Another must-have link is the unofficial Pivot and Panorama controls: http://phone.codeplex.com/
im ready for this!!!
Wow this looks like an interesting journey. Holidays? If you are a student, you can get a waiver on the $99 startup fee to post 5 applications on the windows marketplace. Check out www.dreamspark.com for more student resources.
Thanks for the information provided! I was stepping into WP7 app programming too.
Yea, thanks for telling me but I already knew about dreamspark
I've checked and I can enter by signing up with the e-mail my school provided.
However, since it's valid just one year im not using the key untill I actually own a WP7-device.

Sounds quite awesome. I only had MSDNAA access so far, but I believe I should have Dreamspark access when I start on my bachelor of engineering, after the summer holidays.
Btw. I made a compilation of tools and blogs that'll help developers getting started, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711629

Yumm. I'll get down to learning.
The key needs to be renewed every year .. as long as you have your student email, you'll be fine
My first post on xda-developers... +_+!
Yes, as you were told C sharp learning is important so try hard to learn it then go on learning VS 2010 express and expression blend 4. I am new to WP7 dev too and like you ... am dreaming of building a good application indeed - Games are so tough and complex to build and needs teamwork I think-. I just strated leaning C# and have found a lot of good websites trough google search (Windcape compiled most of them in a useful thread you may bookmark)
However, there are a lot of ressources and books about C# and WP7 programming there in torrents world. you can search them by yourself.
Here is a small cd from lynda.com I just uploaded to demonoid.me.

If anyone needs invitation to demonoid he may PM me here
Also, for a good intorduction to WP7DT just search google for this series : Windows Phone 7 Jump Start

I'm currently studying Computer Science and i am very interested in developing to WP7. I don't have vast knowledge of C# but in other languages i'm good. Let me know if there is an opening for me . Besti wishes...
Do think about the Trial Version - my version was to short - so people were complaining about it...
I haven't read through the replies yet so apologies if I'm repeating anything, but I've been a .Net Developer for around five years now so I feel like this is something that I can actually comment on.
I didn't train in anything to do with computers I just fell into this programming lark, I actually trained as an Actor believe it or not. Through needing to design a database in order to record my Acting Accounts I eventually got into V.B.A. and after ending up with a part time job using V.B.A. was finally forced to learn .Net through requirement changes at work.
I only mention this, so as you know that I wasn't born to this sort of thing and had to struggle to get my head round it.
I started with vb.net as that was almost the same as using v.b.a. but last year decided to teach myself C#. I've not used PHP so can't comment on any similarities or otherwise but I do know this.
C# was a huge shock to my system, absolutely huge. I almost gave up after a week of trying to translate my existing code, but managed to persevere and I'd say that after about two months of forcing myself to do C# only, I felt comfortable with it. A year later and I'm completely fluent and happy with C#.
It's a bugger to look at, I don't find it elegant at all, but once you get your head round the syntax then it all starts to make sense.
Get a good C# book, I'm not sure of any good ones, I've not used any, and go with the lessons in there, but don't let that stop you trying to develop your own experimental stuff in the meantime.
Syntax basics
Curly Brackets {} tend to indicate a routine block
E.g. A Function/Method/Void called Test would look like this
public void Test()
{
... Your code goes here
}
This is also the case with an If statement
E.g.
if(A==B)
{
... Your code goes here
}
Scoping/Dimming/Creating an object requires the Object type first followed by it's name
E.g. TextBox _textbox
The object being created is a TextBox and it's name is _textbox
A semi colon ; indicates the end of a block of code. If you have a particularly long line of code then you can use multiple lines but will
only need to insert the ; at the end of that particularly block of code
E.g. A=1; (This is the standard way of doing this)
A=
1; (This is not the way that I would actually do this but is just an example of what is permissable.)
I always found it useful to find C# code on the web and try to read and understand it.
The most important thing is though, don't give up. Visual Studio is widely considered one of the best coding tools in the industry and C# itself, once you get past the first impressions is a really easy language to pick up.
Thanks for the detailed explanation - the use of accolades ('{}'), multiple lines and the semicolon and the syntaxt for statements looks pretty similar to PHP.
That might just be enough motivation for me to finally get started.
yes, even though I asked about advice over halve a year ago, I never got quite to it... Maybe these similarities plus the fact that I have a Microsoft Dreamspark developer account plus the fact that in March I might have a device will be of help. If that's not enough motivation, I don't know what will be :#
Go for it!
You can always ask questions here or on somewhere like StackOverflow.com if you get stuck.
Object Orientation takes some getting used to, but atleast the garbage collector should look after your memory for you
Dave
Interesting, I hope you will get something.
Just adding my two cents here...
I thoroughly recommend that anyone getting into WP7 programming takes a very good look at the MVVM pattern (see here - it's WPF based but the difference is really only in the objects available, most silverlight code can be directly ported to WPF and vice versa). Using this pattern not only enables you to easily swp the UI for your app, it also makes debugging a whole lot easier due to the lack of UI code in the classes that actually do the work (the view models).
Another thing to try and get your head around is asynchronous programming with services, but that is not really something you want to start out with Sorry, forgot we were dealing with silverlight for a minute this is something you're going to have to learn right from the start, along with using background threads for processing data.
For anyone that needs any specific advice feel free to PM me. I'm new to the WP7 thing, but looking at the classes available which aren't available in silverlight it shouldn't be too hard to get into. And the design patterns will be the same.

WP7 Gamers

Hi all, with the current lack of global leaderboards, or any specific WP7 Gaming community (that I've found) I've set up WP7 Gamers.
At present, we're on Facebook and twitter (search out WP7 Gamers). A fully fledged website may follow later should interest deem it worthwhile. Also as this is done in my spare time (which I lack enough of!) - if anyone is interested in becoming an admin/mod/poster - please feel free to drop me a message!
Not wanting to upset the mod's on here, this is not run for profit! Just couldn't find what I was looking for! so set out to make it myself. Also for the dev's out there wanting to promote their titles, please feel free to send any information/screenshots/video's and I'll make sure they are shared
Hope this is ok?
gr8 idea dude
Hey sHAYM4N I'm trying to message you but it's not letting me, can you send me one that I can reply to? Thx man.
If you want, I could lend you my website.
It was supposed to be a site dedicated to game news/reviews for WP7 that I started as a school project, but I couldn't find the time to continue it. If you and a small group wanted to take charge more or less, I would give you guys all the info needed to moderate the forums, and if you wanted to, you could even post news and get the front end going again - assuming people posting news were literate.
Let me know.

Cheers for that, but I may have to look at designing from scratch for what I have in mind.
I don't really want this to be another new/reviews website if it goes that way. I want to try and create something that I see as an extension to XBox Live. Something different...
Having a quick search around it appears Microsoft don't have an open API for XBox which is a real shame tbh, because there are a lot of things that could be done further which I don't think are yet being taken advantage of.
In a perfect scenario I would like to see members register for the website using their gamertag, from there they could access leaderboards, compare gamerscores, compete in challenges, whilst also being an active social forum for indie developers.
I'd also be looking for the site to be run by 5-10 people - preferably from different timezones!
If the idea took off and interest grew, challenges could turn into competitions, advertising into supporting the site etc...
When I get chance I'll mock up some designs. I'm more of a designer than a developer - so if anyone has got any advice, or want's to get on board so to speak - feel free to let me know!
For the time being there will be weekly challenges on the Facebook Page. Get the highest score by the closing time, and your gamertag/pic will be crowned on the Profile Pic.
I'll also be posting information about Indie Games, so if you want your game featured please let me know! They won't be reviewed so to speak, just information/screenshots. The idea is to provide the information, and let the community review the game.

Whats going on with XDA Portal??? All I can see there is news about Android apps, themes, rooted devices and nothing else more.
I simple dont get it, there is already a major WP7 breakthrough with a Mango 7713 Custom ROM for HTC WP7 First Generation from DFT talked all over the place but not a single word from XDA Portal, or did I missed something?
Is everyone here hypnotized with Android?
What do you WP7 fans have to say?

There was an article last week about a Mango custom ROM for the HD7, I think. In any case, it's based on the news writers and which forums they browse around in. I think only egzthunder1 is still a WM user.
i think you just have to wait. As more people turn to wp7 you'll hear more and more news about it. Also the reason android is mentioned so much is because most the phones run android and you also get a lot of news about the phone itself rather than the os.

That article was about HSPL/RSPL for HTC WP7 devices released by DFT and I am glad someone published it. Now we just need kitchen tools and start cooking it.
I really dont understand this lack of interest about WP7 as I have been playing with Mango for awhile and think that is so much better than Android.
As a side note this message was send from an Android device because my HD7 run out of battery. Android is fun too.

Ill try and keep an eye on WP7 as well. Like Orb said, we go where the news
Indeed. As was expressed earlier, your feedback is definitely appreciated.
Though we generally try to have the Portal act as a microcosm for the site's activity as a whole, we could stand to have a little more WP7. As Orb3000 mentioned, please feel free to PM any of us in the News Writers user group if you see that we have missed anything important in the WinMo or WP7 worlds. We would be delighted to write about it.
Thank you, once again, for your feedback.
When I spot any WP7 developments I tip off Egz (or anyone else I can find online) - I'm claiming credit for the HSPL article tip .
I'm just busy IRL at the moment and not keeping up with the developments every day.
To be fair to the team, not much has happened in the WP7 until recently
And the show goes on and on and ...
This is a disgrace for WP7 members. We really have to dig if we want to find WP7 news.
Well we still have wpcentral.
I really hope WP7 can take off. I like Android but WP7 is prettier and snappier. If there comes a time when my must-have .apks have an equivalent or superior on WP7 I'll totally switch. Those must-have .apks used to be .cabs and that's what held me onto WinMo for so long. I was waiting forever for garmin to sell me an android app but instead they just bought navigon... Works for me...
Like i was stated a couple months ago, we go where the news is. I have not seen many suggested news in the lines of WinMo7 since this thread was originally started. Once again, if you see something news worthy, please let us know so we can get on top of it. We are a small group and do not always catch things immediately.
Bingo, what TRM said is absolutely true. On top of that, most writers use Android and unfortunately, it is very hard to keep tabs or even review apps when you don't even have a device to test things on.
I just got a WP7.5 device, so we may start seeing more of this in the Portal...
Coupled with the fact that the portal guys work really hard to find new, relevant content.
And in this day and age, that is primarily Android content, based on marketshare and usage levels.
Perhaps wp7 will pick up a bit, but it's still not gaining much ground

As much as I try it just dont get published.
Come on guys, as I said in a previous post I am sure you are doing your best but If you look to the Portal it is all about Android, there is nothing about windows phone.
Custom Roms, apps, tricks and device root and device reviews are only about Android. If there is a first custom rom for an Android device this is almost instantly reviewed, if there is a new outstanding app for Android it is posted immediatly, and so on...
Dont get me wrong, I have nothing against Android or Android Members, in fact I have an Asus device with Android too, but when was the last time something about windows phone was posted in the Portal?
We are a few Windows Phone fans here but we were Thousands back in the WM6.5 good old days so I think we deserve some attention too from the news writers.
Again, please dont take these personnal statements as an attack, that is not my intention. But, as a Windows Phone lover I feel sorry to see WP7 being left behind by this community that I love so much.
Thanks

Perhaps people are betting on the wrong horse. It is predicted that there will be more windowsphone devices in 2016 then iphones. This is calculated by analists of IDC. Other analists confirms this evolution. The growth of android will stop soon too.
I think that the intrest in windowsphone will grow with the growing part of windowsphone in the market. So I am not worried at all. It will only be better.
Personally I don't like android at all (nor Iphone).

Hi dotcompt,
Thanks for the heads up. You bring up a very valid point, and I will make an effort to address this. While we do indeed have more Android users here, and thus more Android development, WP7 is a fantastic OS that should not be ignored. I apologize for the inconvenience.
To alleviate it, would you be so kind as to PM me personally when you have content suggestions? I would gladly publish any story about WP7 as long as it's relevant development work. And on that note, thank you much for contributing to the community with your development efforts.
Will
