[Q] Google search - result order - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Had a nexus one with froyo and when I used the search soft key it would always search the phone first before the web. So I always used it to lookup contacts and they were always first in the list of returned items.
Got a desire today with froyo out of the box. When I search on this it looks like the web results are displayed before the phone contents so my contacts are either at the bottom of the list or not displayed at all. I can see how I add and remove options to search different categories but I see no way of changing the order the results are displayed.
Am I missing something obvious here?

Found it. Google search suggestions was turned on. Switched it off and it has fixed my problem.

Facebook Live Profiles - Sync Problem (Dutty V3 Ship)

Hi guys,
I've searched the forum to find posts related to sync'ing problems with facebook live profiles, of which the actions to resolve these bugs have already been put in place already in Dutty's V3 ROM.
To be more specific... when I get the list of Live Profiles on the screen, the photos for the facebook users start appearing one by one as it refreshes. However if i scroll down the list of users, it appears to have only have refreshed the users that are in view (so when i scroll down, all these users have no picture)... I gave it time, but nothing, so I pressed Refresh in the bottom left and it refreshed those username and displayed their pictures... but having scrolled back to my original position, the pictures have gone again.
What it appears is that the refresh is only updating the facebook users that are visable on the screen but not the whole list.
Is anyone having this problem? Or might have an idea how to solve it?
Thanks,
WizzKidd
A few people on the forum have suggested to others to "change the Data Connection so to download data automaticaly under updates and status/menu"
and,
"press update in the data settings menu and when it starts updating press home to get away from the updates and status page. It should carry on updating (the same way it would if you had it set to auto update) but you won't get the crashing if you're not on that page."
I cant seem to find these options in the Data Connections (under the Comm Manager, unless im looking in the wrong place). Can someone help me out here?
Thanks,
WizzKidd

That was me that suggested that on the Dutty V3 thread. The data settings are under all people/updates and events/menu/data connection settings
I think the op was asking about the way the profile images refresh though. This is an issue, but I would imagine an intentional one, so as hundreds of images are not being loaded into memory every time contacts is open. The more contacts you have with photos, the more likely it would be to slow down your phone I guess.
EDIT: Oh! ha ha, you are the original poster. Doh!

Search problem

Hey peeps.
I am having problem with "search" on HTC Desire.
It works good with everything beside calendar search. Its just not working right!
In about 1/2 of tries it just wont search the calendar event!
If i for example have Birthday for 2 peoples with same first name it just wont search one of them or even both. Then i open calendar, look on the place they have birthdays, exit it and try search again and it works OK. ...ill wait a bit, try the search again... and again nothing found!!
What is the problem? Does anyone have the same problem??
It does the same even when i use "search" directly from the calendar.
Please, test it someone and tell me if its only mine problem. SOme events it dont have problem to find everytime, but some not. Dont know why. Cant even imagine why is that.
Pls. help. Its pretty iritating.... (
Hmmm...Done a Quick test on mine, and 5 times out of 5 it found my calendar Event.
Might be Network based if its Google Calendar and not Syncing correctly? Dunno, but seems fine my end
KYI
Hmm... i dont get it.
I just tried to put new event on google. Then sync. phone with it.
Then open search - tested - and nothing found.
If i open calendar - then jump out - and try search again - it works.
But if i wait or try to search for some event that is much much later (like 4 and mor months) - crappy results again. Sometimes it found the event, sometimes not.
Iam desperate....
did you tried to find some distant event? Or just some that is today or so...?

Even Christmas Day comes up, so its working well into the Future for me
KYI
And you are using google calendar or just private one stored in phone?
When you create event in november, run synchro on desire and then try to search it by the basic search... will it find it??
I dont really get whats the problem (
What COULD be happening is what I notice sometimes is the search results are in the 'More Results' button at the bottom of the screen
Enter what you are looking for, then go to bottom of search results, there should (Sometimes) be a box labled 'More Results'
Try in there...
Nope, nothing there. And i know about the "more results" box.
Iam so confused
I tried to restore factory setting but the problem is still there...
I for example created 2 entries via google cal. - Test 1 - 20.4.2010 and Test 2 - 20.12.2010.
Synced.
Results: Test 1 found, nothing about test 2 in there....
I open calendar - checked date 20.12.2010 - yes, the Test 2 entry was there.
Jump back to main screen - search - well, test 1 and test 2 found. ...so what the hell???

[Q] privacy Settings in Froyo

I can't seem to find the privacy setting in froyo? Was this taken out during the OTA update?
From home screen press the search button and type "privacy" , the setting should be there.
this is driving me nuts (and my searches have turned up nothing other than this thread)
I'm having the same issue - I cannot for the life of me find the 'Account' screen NOR the 'Privacy Settings' screen on my device.
The above advice simply opens a google search - and even if I tweak the search settings under Phone/Searchable Items to only look for 'Settings' it seems ot simply ignore that entirely and always returns a google-wide web search with the top result as the Wikipedia definition for 'Privacy'....
Anyone have any clues as to how to access these 2 screens in Froyo 2.2 on HTC Desire?
Many thanks in advance!
The "accounts&sync" should be already in your standard settings option, it's not "hidden" as the privacy settings.
Try allowing google search to search only for settings, without web and other. Also you can try to type "back" instead of privacy, as it should bring the option too (because backup settings are in "privacy).
Hi - many thanks for your reply.
Unfortuantely I've already tried restricting the search parameters across a number of variations (including only checking 'settings') but it seems to completely ignore that and perform a google 'web-wide' search no matter what - so what exactly the point of being able to manipulate the search perameters is I have no idea (seems like it's simply window dressing!?)
Same story searching for back or back up (and variations thereof)
Yes - the Accounts and Synch appears to be the way to access the account screen - The Account screen doesn't appear to exist as such, however I can get to what it (as in the manual) refers to by tapping on Accounts and Synch and then tapping on individual 'accounts' - to alter what does/doesn't synch for that particular account
Thanks again - still searching for these elusive 'Privacy Settings' though - I even just tried using Astro file manager to search for some terms that may indicate where some of the access files are located and nothing
I too had problems using the method below to find the Privacy settings:
From the Home screen, press the search button.
Press the menu Button & select "Search settings".
Select "Searchable items" and tick Settings.
Press the back button twice.
Touch the icon to the left of the search input & select "Settings"
Type "Privacy"
Privacy (HTC global search) should appear - select this.
I found that the setting wasn't appearing because I was using Swype!
A long touch in the search input brings up a menu.
Select Input method.
Select Touch Input.
Repeat the privacy search as above.
Voila - the Privacy setting appears!
SPANNAA - you are a GOD!!
Brilliant walkthrough - worked a charm
Many thanks mate, much obliged

[Q] search box auto-complete/correct

Hi all,
I love my Desire, but one little thing keeps niggling me -
when you press the search button, and enter some text into it, you have to get every letter exactly right, whereas on almost every other text box, you get the pop up suggestions, and it auto-corrects typos and chooses the most likely word.
It also seems to not autocorrect on google.com search (on the web) either, whilst it does in multiline text boxes (like when you're posting on the forum here).
Is there any way to turn proper typing on for the search field, it is dead annoying.
I can cope with it being a hack to fix this - I've got a rooted desire (running Froyo/Modaco at the moment), and I don't mind fiddling around in code / repacking apk files or whatever if I have to.

I am confused by sign in changes in the forum

I used to be able to log in with my username moshiachnow. Today I tried to do that, but it kept prompting me to link my log in with a Google log in. It also had me pick a different user name. So now I have this extra log in, geulanow, and no idea how I can log into my previous account. I tried resetting the password, got a new password, but keep getting logged into geulanow instead.
What am I missing here?
Thanks.
When logging in, you must have pressed the red Google button next to the sign in area. You should instead press the > arrow next to the username/password entry. This will log you in after entering your details.
I've deleted your new account, and you still have your old @moshiachnow account.
Could you please make the design a bit more intuitive?! For example make two buttons, and label one "sign in" and the other "sign in with google".
When you are the designer of the site and therefore know how it's supposed to work, then it's easy. But if you are a user who sees this for the first time then there is absolutely no clue to figure this out, other than by luck / randomly pressing somewhere (which usually isn't a smart idea). I didn't even get, that this little arrow is supposed to be a butten. Thought it to be just a design element without any function.
Because of privacy issue I din't want to sign in with google and therefore started experimenting and searching to figure out an alternate way to log in without google. Took me about 15 Minutes to find this thread. Was near on giving up on xda an searching for an alternate forum.
