Recommendation for a portable auxiliary power source - Captivate Accessories

I'm looking for a "small and lightweight" auxiliary battery or charger that I can use when I have no access to an AC outlet to preserve the phone's battery charge. A small device that I can connect to the microUSB port of the Captivate with a short USB cable while I watch my movies. Preferably with a built-in rechargeable battery, but would consider a device that can take AA or AAA rechargeables. I know I can get a couple extra phone batteries with a charger for a few $$$ in eBay, but I want something I can take out of my briefcase and in a second connect it to the phone without the inconvenience of having to remove my Amzer Argyle case and the back cover of the phone. I'm afraid I'm going to stretch my phone case out shape by taking it off and putting it on, mess up (loosen) the locking mechanism of the back cover or will end up, somehow, bending the simulated carbon fiber back cover. Not to mention the fear of dumping my coffee on the internals of the phone while it sits with the back exposed on the food tray of a plane/train/bus or on whichever surface I happen to be having my coffee. The icing on the cake would be if this auxiliary power source could also serve as a phone stand.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I ordered one of these - there are other variations; but this is 4000mAh (so almost 3 times our current battery), The USB port is a full 1A, and will also charge my camcorder battery. They do make one with 2 USB ports:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0029U2WTG/ref=oss_product
It was $25 when i ordered it last week - now it is more.

Tekkeon MP1550
I've been using this to charge several usb devices on the go. i had it for several years now. its better if you pair it with sanyo eneloops.
its $14.99 @ newegg $22.30 on amazon

Many thanks for your suggestions... but is there anything smaller? That Energizer XP4000 looks like an excellent option at $25, but at $50 it is a little too big an expensive.
Edit:
I just ran across the Duracell Powersource Mini.... Anyone using this with a Captivate? Also, does anyone have any details on the specs of the battery in this powerpack? I could not even find any details in the Duracell site.
Amazon
Duracell
I also found this one, but for $1.49 I don't know if it'll end up killing the phone. But it could be nice rechargeable AA batteries.

I won't buy anything that I can't find tech specs on - so the Duracell unit could be 1000mAh or 3000mAh - for the price i would say it is around 1000. The 2 AA chargers have to up the 3V to 5V and so the best available power is about 1000 mAh (i base this on the altoids chargers specs using 2 2500mAh AA batteries).
If all you want is a 1000 mAh in a small form factor, Target sells one (the Energizer XP 1000) in the store for about $20 with a bunch of tips. Keep in mind that our batteries are 1500 mAh so you won't get a full charge.

The Duracell appears to be the exact same device as the Xantrex Technologies 852 2051 Xpower Mobile Mini. If this is the case, then it appears to be a 3000mAh device. I like this charger because it has a built-in mini USB connector and a separated regular USB which makes it very convenient. I wonder who the OEM is... Duracell or Xantrex?
I also came across the IOGEAR Gear Juice Mobile, but based on some of the users' reviews it appears to have have 2000mAh rechargeable battery.

I saw that one that looked like the Duracell but i could not be sure. Wherever you buy make sure you can return if it is not what you want.
It seems hard to find much that is 1500 mah or larger without getting to big.

It is good enough;
The good news is that Xantrex makes both and they are 3Ah. The only down side is that you are limited to .5A charge - same as USB. I picked the Energizer as it is capable of 1A output, although our phones only draw about 700 mA max.
Wait one other downside - miniUSB not microUSB so it won't fit our phones without an adapter. This must be an "old" product as the spec sheet says it fits "New Motorola phones such as RAZR and ROKR" neither are made any more.

Given that the Xantrex appears to be an old product I have continued to look around for an auxiliary power source. I found the Kensington K38056US which has a microUSB and a MiniUSB output connectors and uses a regular built-in USB connector to charge. So the element of convenience is very high given that it can also be charged with the Captivate charger. Only thing is that the battery is 1200 mAh, but it appears to have an output of up to 1000 mAh. Amazon has it for $30. The specs sheet says that it started shipping on 5/1/10 so this one is a "fairly" new device.
In terms of power I have not yet found anything that matches the Energizer XP4001 for its size, but it is a little heavier than the Kensington (5.4 onz vs. 4.0 ) and you also have to carry an additional AC adapter.
The search continues...

hey...sorry for irrelevant posting...but your name sounds familiar ..! are you from Pune?
btw Splash Intense 5400mAh should work with captivate, 5400mAh is lot of power, i guess it can recharge captivate at least 3 times considering its 1500mAh battery..

Well, I just received the Duracell Powersource Mini which I ordered from Amazon as it's on sale for $19.50 down from the MSRP of 59.99. The Xantrex Xpower Mobile Mini which is the same device is still selling for $45.50.
I added a music CD to my order as the Powersource Mini is eligible for free shipping on orders of $25+. Given the Powersource has a Mini-USB male connector and a regular USB female port built-in, I also got a shorter 2.5ft USB to Micro-USB cable from ebay for $2.99 to use with the Powersource Mini. (Also with free shipping and it fits perfectly in the Captivate) This short USB to Micro-USB cable will be used to charge my Captivate and the built-in Mini-USB connector will be used to charge my MP3 player and Camera. The Powersource Mini comes with a USB AC charger and a USB Vehicle DC charger adapter which gives me added flexibility.
The only issues I have found, so far, is that the DC input port of the Powersource is proprietary, so you always need to carry the 4.5ft USB charging cable and "possibly" the AC adapter. The USB AC adapter that comes with the Powersource is just a little bit bigger than the USB AC adapter that comes with the Captivate. A very negligible size difference, but I'd be afraid of using the Powersource AC adapter on the Captivate for prolonged periods of time as it "might" damage the phone. In the description of the AC Adapter of the Powersource it says that it is a AC/DC "Switching" Adapter. This "might" mean that it's designed specifically for the Powersource to switch off when it's fully charged. Also the output specs of the Powersource adapter are 5.5 volts 800mA compared to the 5.0 volts 700mA of the AC adapter that comes with the Captivate. I'd be nice if I only had to carry one AC adapter. Any thoughts on these USB AC/DC adapters being interchangeable?
Edit: In a previous post it was said that this device might be old because it had a Mini-USB instead of Micro-USB connector. A sticker on the device says that it was manufactured on 09/26/2008... So it is a bit old, but not extremely so.

Its only a 1500 mAh, but its pretty compact and it fits around your wrist.
Seems more convenient than a typical power source.

Did you ever buy this? I'm considering one for some travel and wondered how it worked out.

I have both the XP2000 and XP8000 and both work very well.

I can't link but I bought a "Satechi icel 5200mAh" batter extender off amazon. It will charge my phone 3+ times before I need to recharge it. I use it to travel. Works great with all my portable devices as long as they use a USB charger. If I could take pictures I would show the size against a phone. I've put them both in a jacket pocket before without worry

I have a portable charger with capacity of 1900mAh. Its lightweight Its output is 4.5 to 5.5v 800mA Max. Though the charge time is around 2 to 4 hours, it would be rite for your need and purpose. I am not sure of Thinkgeek, but if you can check gadget store Chinabuye, there are more ranges of power charging, you can check and choose the better one, I ordered it from them at reasonable rate.

Samsung Batteries on EBAY (OEM vs. Generic)

Anybody have any experience with the Generic batteries on ebay going for about $5.00 each. Are these classing "you get what you paid for" or are the oem version just way over priced?
Please advise.
Update:
Purchased two batteries + charger (non-oem)... They last half as long as the Samsung OEM.
I bought 2 batteries + usb cable + charger + car charger for $8.99 (+$3.99 shipping) http://cgi.ebay.com/2x-Battery-USB-...863749?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3f02cc0145
I knew they where not OEM or even not Samsung (like the picture). But they work fine. I have no complain.

@floppy - Does the car charger put out decent amperage? Or is it slow like USB? Also, the picture makes the battery charger look like a monster - is it as thick as it looks? Can the USB port be used to charge a phone while it is plugged into the wall?
thanks!
If you are looking for a decent car charger, get the Kensington PowerBolt K39224US . It puts out 2.1 amps and fits flush in you cig lighter...
if the wall charger is anything like a previous one i've owned, the dock charges the phone and/or a standalone battery... maybe at the same time, but probably sucks :\

If you look at the additional pics on others and read the specs, you can see the AC prongs on the back of the charger.
you guys know if we already have review of that in the main SGS forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=733705
Also, if you read through the random shut-down thread, one of teh posts says Samsung is blaming the shut-downs on a charger/battery combination. It would be interesting to see if the aftermarket replacements cause such a problem or if its just a line of crap from Samsung.
I got 2 of the aftermarket batteries along with a charger and they seem fine.
not as good as OEM but do a great job as a backup.

I'm sorry I can't answer your first question because my car has an usb port and I don't use the car charger I received with the bundle.
About the size, it's not really bigger than the battery and yes you can charge your phone trhu the usb cable when in the same time your are charging a spare battery

Nope - the port shape doesn't mean anything. The factory charger has a female USB end and it charges faster then a PC USB port.
Keep in mind that all testing (even with an ammeter) shows that the max current the captivate will draw is about 700 mA. There is no reason for any charger that puts out more then 1 amp.
I bought the Griffin power bolt that has 2 1 Amp USB ports - so i can charge 2 devices at once. Also, most car chargers (with just the uSB port - no cable) need to have the data pins shorted or the phone will only draw 500 mA.
There are a couple threads in the Vibrant and i9000 forum that document all this. I modified an extra cable myself and now my phone sees my 1A car charger as an AC charger.
I just got these along with some other stuff.... the charger. The led is red when charging or when complete?
red when charging, blue when fully charged
Does anyone know if this kind of battery is gonna HURT your phone? I know that it might not last as long as the OEM one, that is fine. Just worry if this kind of battery can get over voltage some time that can be bad to your phone ... Anyone confirm about that? Thanks

Does anyone know - is a 1 amp (1000ma) car charger the recommendation on the mt4g? Where's the best/cheapest place to buy one? It seems like most of the time, amps are specified in product details.
Also, I assume if you charge off of your laptop usb port, that it'll be charging at 1 amp as well?

Belkin makes a micro usb charger that's 5v 1a. I think I paid 20 bucks for mine. It works well and is TINY. You can use it to charge anything that uses a usb cable.

IGo Makes a great line of chargers. I have their car and home chargers. They work great and if you get a different phone all you have to do is get a new tip. This way you don't have to contantly buy new chargers.
How about $1? Yes, $1.16...

if your looking for cheap just hit ebay... you can get the generic's for like a buck with free shipping
i wont touch car chargers with a 10 foot stick... the electirical whine from the alternator distroys Li-Ion batteries...
i use usb to computer or to one of those "emergency battery chargers" just another Li-Ion batt, if you plug the emergency charger into the car, and the phone into the emergency charger the battery in the emergency charger will take the hit....
similar to a couple hundered dollar UPS i have on my server racks

This is a new one for me. Can you back that statement up with proof? (not being rude - just curious)
FYI: A good all-purpose micro usb charger is the Motorola P513 ~$10.00 with S&H on Amazon
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
i can poke around on the interwebs... but mostly thats from years of experience with phones, years selling phones, and chargers (RadioShack).
you can prevent all damage by charging the phone while the car (alternator) off, or by using a power inverter, or with the extra LIon batt solution i mentioned above...
NEVER plug the phone (directly) into the car, and then crank the motor, the (electrical) whine is at its worst as the alternator comes up to speed...
at the same time, this is what i tell all my customers:
"cell phones are convenience items, if its not convenient to do, then dont do it"
most people will find the tradeoff of having the phone charged "now" vs diminished batt capacity an easy choice to make... but not all people are like "us"
it surprises me that HTC endorses the use of car chargers with car docks...
but those 1$ chargers on ebay are the worst, most are non-regulated, and could dump 12V into the phone at the smallest problem. 12V will absolutely torch your phone...
you will do what you like... just food for thought

Car charger?

Before this forum was made, I was trying to find a car charger that would actually work. The majority of the ones sold on Amazon are just micro USB chargers, which obviously don't work for the a100. I found this one on another forum, so I bought one:
mobile.walmart.com/ip/Car-Cord-Adapter-with-Polarity-Switch/15050431
But when I tried another similar wall charging product, I had to exchange my tablet for a new one because the battery stopped charging entirely. So my question is, is this product (with the proper voltage settings, of course) safe to use?
This is the thread I found the product on:
acertabletforum.com/forum/acer-a100-general-discussion/1168-car-charger-2.html
A few people there claim it works, but I trust xda a lot more. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks, and I'm anxiously awaiting, like everyone else, some custom roms on this nice little device.

It seems that the eBay one is better. It has 3A output vs the 2A from Walmart.
If you are using the A100 in the car it is better to have a charger with a higher capacity.

Car charger specs
After several calls to Acer, I was able to have then confirm that the maximum voltage that should be applied to the A100 is 12 volts DC.
Your car is capable of producing 13 to 15 volts DC while running. Failure to use a REGULATED 12 volt charger could fry your tablet. Your tablet will draw aprox 1.5-1.8 amps while running AND charging. Anything that is capable of delivering 2 amps or better will be fine. A charger rated at 5 amps will Not ham your unit, it is just capable of delivering the required power with room to spare.
NEVER attempt to charge via USB, there is NO physical connection between the USB port and the battery charging circuit.
I have not been able to get the size specifications for the charging plug from Acer. If I can find my caliper kit I will measure mine and post it here.
Hope this helps.
Bob
i just bought an extra wall charger and use inverter. i have a 800watts inverter lying around. and it works fine.
So does anyone have a lead on a 12 volt regulated car charger?
I used an 85 watt converter and watched a 90 minute movie with no problems except the converter was rather hot when I pulled it out of the lighter socket.
I picked up a +12V voltage regulator from Radio Shack and soldered it into a cheap Chinese charger I found on Ebay, and it works perfectly. The regulator is only rated at 1.5A, but I'm never using my A100 while it's charging in the car.
Considering the minimal voltage change, I doubt that additional .3 amp draw would overheat the regulator anyhow.

Best portable battery?

Hi all,
I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with portable battery packs. I don't mean extended batteries either. I mean the universal usb charger kind that packs several thousand mAh.
I'm looking to get one for a nine hour flight, and I want to know what is a good brand.

I can't answer your question, but a lot of planes have a USB/charging input now. I know when I fly Air Canada, they have it.
I have had an Energizer XP18000 for about 3 months now and it has surpassed my expectations.
It holds 18000 mAh of power and will charge my Gnex and my Xoom at the same time (need to order a special tip for the Xoom/non standard device). I use it for long train rides to keep my phone topped up.
When watching HD video over 4G my battery level will drop about 1-2% every half hour, so it is not charging as fast as the wall charger, but it is enough to keep you from having a dead battery when you get to your destination. With my usage I can go 3 to 4 days and never need to look at a wall outlet.
The size is about as big as a external hard drive. There is also a wall charger that has a good size power brick in the middle of it. You can remove it when you don't need the wall charger, but I keep everything in one small bag so all I have to do is set it down next to an outlet and top up the external battery, then fold the cord into the bag and pull out what ever cord I need when I am on the move. It works just fine with the original Samsung usb charging cable.
I picked mine up from Amazon but you might be able to find a better deal if you look hard enough. They make a smaller model too that is only 8000 mAh.
I always keep it in my bag and it works so well for me that I don't even need the extended battery and leave 4G on all the time.

Beautiful. Thanks Dante. And yeah, I heard some planes have USB chargers now. Unfortunately I'm not flying with them. I live near YVR, but Air Canada is having a bunch of problems with their workers right now. Last thing I need is flight delays or bad service.
I did a ton of research before buying mine. I wanted a pocket sized one, that had large capacity (enough to fully charge the phone twice), and could charge a device at a full 1 amp. After much research, I bought the original version of this one:
http://www.newtrent.com/store/iphone-external-battery/iphone-battery-imp50d.html
Mine has less markings and I believe both ports on mine are 1 amp, where as the new one has one 500mA and one 1A port. Mine was also like $55, this one is on sale for barely over $40, an even better deal.
It is very powerful - 5,000 mAh will charge the phone 3+ times - much bigger than other "pocket batteries", fits in a pocket nicely (I wear cargo pants) because it's skinny, like a deck of cards. Fairly light too. Only complaint is that I bought it before MicroUSB became the new standard, so it charges with miniUSB instead.
I carry a retractable mini-usb cable, and a retractable microUSB cable, in an altoids tin, in in my pocket with it. Works great, can charge my friends phones at the same time as me. Had it for 2 years, still going strong!
There are newer designs they have now too if you look at their website.
It does take a long while to charge - 8 hours to charge fully or so if you charge off a 500mAh USB port, because it's a huge battery! a lot less maybe 4 hours if you charge off a high speed 1A charger.
i was looking at this one http://www.amazon.ca/Anker-8400mAh-...UTF8&coliid=I3IVVC4G6YETK&colid=1ILTNQ88L4FE5
it has a 2amp 5v port, this can charge a transformer prime with the screen off.
I got this one recently:
http://www.amazon.com/Anker-SlimTal..._1_2?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1335035472&sr=1-2
Its (much) smaller than my Nexus, has a built in micro-usb cable, and charges via micro-usb as well. While it doesn't have the capacity of those listed above (only 3200mAh), it was only $20 and the size really does let you take it everywhere.
It can fully charge it the phone from dead about 1.5 times.
I bought mine due mainly to the fact that it includes the micro-usb cable that hides away when not in use. It has a standard USB port as well for charging other items, but the appeal of only having to carry one item and no extra cable sold me.
My only complaint is that the built in cable could be a bit longer.
It has a flashlight too... lol
Been researching this topic lately and found that Anker's 10,000mah external battery is looking the best

I use the Veho Pebble and it's fine for my needs. I get 2 charges out of it.
after hours of my own research I also bought the Anker Slimtalk. I dont travel enough to need one that is huge and can charge my phone 8 times. This seems small enough to toss in my pocket and not bother me since its so thin and light. For $20 and the convenience of having its built in micro usb cable sounds like a perfect little invention to get me through the day.
If I traveled more I would of probably got the Energizer XP8000. Their tip program is awesome. Free tips for life but really its $2 shipping each. if you want this device to charge a whole bunch of things it can. My Acer netbook, EVO 3D, girlfriends RAZR, 3DS, bluetooth, iPad 2, Nook, and the list goes on. I've been trying to ask New Trent for almost a week if their products would be compatible with the Energizer Tip program but found that contrary to what I've read their customer support is terrible, but their prices are better than energizer. So they loose out on the sale since over the last few times of researching has allowed me to find the Slimtalk which for the price and for my needs is perfect.

Exactly why I went with it. Even while traveling I'm generally within range of a car or home charger, especially now that pretty much everyone without an iPhone has a micro USB charger somewhere.
I just wish it had a built in AC adapter as well but I'm sure the size would increase by quite a bit. Someone (iGo maybe) makes one like that but it only has about an 1100mah battery if I recall.
I found something here in the Netherlands, and I'm not quite sure if you guys in the US have the same thing..
The thing this has going for it is it's portability. It fits in your pocket, and if you don't mind a big lump in your pockets, it even fits together with your phone.
Click over there <<< to check out the dutch website of duracell. It basically is a battery with a socket plug on it, and 2 USB outlets.
Tech. info:
Output voltage: 5 volts DC
Input voltage: 5 volts DC, max. 1 amp
Capacity: 1800 mAh
Offcourse, this is the dutch version, with the dutch socket plug, but maybe there's an US version as well?
Thanks for all the info here guys. I have that crappy Black and Decker Pocket Power from a few years back, that well, isn't living up to the charge these days, so I need something else.
Still a bit too many options, but I'm sure I'll find one that works the best.

[Q] What should i look for when getting a car charger?Does USB cable make difference?

http://www.flipkart.com/belkin-f8z4...rger&ref=1121df98-c23e-4571-b4a3-5f8776ad5243
I saw this Belkin charger and says 5V and 1A charging capacity. I read that S3 maximum charging is 1A , so will this charger work ? or does 5V is not enough ? or go for 2A ?
Also does USB cable matter in charging ?
the usb cable makes all the difference.. ive used cheap ebay cables and they dont charge quite as good as oem or the mediabridge hi-speed i have.

I have just bought a couple of these cables:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00FAAHT0E/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and one of these chargers:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00D82O68Y/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
as my Belkin 1A wasn't really as adequate as it could have been.
The cables may be a bit over-kill (and a tad pricey, but I took up the 30 day free Amazon Prime trial so got free next day delivery), but as a combo they work admirably and can cope with charging my S3 and my Nexus 7 (which needs 2A) simultaneously.
Can you guys suggest a brand which is available all over world.. both listed items are not available in india. And Cant spend so much too
USB is digital (except for power). Anything a bit pricier than the cheapest cable will do.
Get a cable like this, with a charger that provides 2.1a out of a single port. If you're on a custom kernel that allows you to change incoming amperage, you don't need the dedicated cable.

Where do people get the idea that a USB cable is gonna make a difference for charging your phone??
I've used ebay, dollar store type cables my whole life and have never had a problem other than cheap build quality where the cable doesn't last very long. It still passed the same power or signal as any well known and overpriced branded cable.
I assume these people are the same suckers who buy $100 Monster HDMI cables that work the same as $10 ebay or monoprice stuff.
Be careful with those "mini" car chargers. The cheap price is daunting, but I bought a package that came with 2 with retractable USB cords for only 5 US dollars.
The adapter would not stay firmly in the car and pull out whenever I tried to extend the cord to plug in my phone, and my phone's battery decreased while plugged in...
While this could've been a car issue, I'd just use caution. Instead I purchased a regular sized one with a retractable USB built in for only 8 dollars, I'll link you if you're interested. Good luck!

Also don't forget that the actual charger might suck
