Anyone tried PDANET? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since they offer a fully functional version for 14 days as a trial I tried it.
With 1 bar of 4G signal and usb tether, getting 3.3Mb connection. It flies! Bluetooth tether was pretty slow though at 0.5Mb but, I figure the usb is the better option since you don't drain your battery.
I haven't rooted my Epic and don't want to until the community grows a bit more and things mature. Just might end up buying the license for pdanet. Truth be told only thing I used root for on my Evo besides the custom roms was tethering.

it works just make sure to have all the samsung galaxy s drivers installed in your computer first before actually installing pdanet

i installed it on my pc but the app isnt in my phone

Dude not cool man. Developers are people who have bills to pay just like you and me. For many of them this is their main source of income. If the program does what it claims to do and you use the product, then you shouldn't have a problem with paying for it.
Its the only solution that works without root on a mac and it works damn well so I purchased a license.

The point in rooting

Hi,
I am new to android. I came over from a htc hd2. Basicaly I was just wondering apart from being able to install apps2sd I can't really see much more to do with it. I know you can install custom ROMS, but I think the default that comes with the phone is just fine.
Could someone please tell me of any perks of rooting the desire.
Cheers

so am I missing something. where on that page does it tell you the benefits or rooting?

I don't mean to be rude, but if you are not aware what you can do with a rooted android device, maybe you should just google around a little bit and find out what root access actually means. I find it helps a lot when you actually understand something before considering it.
Wifi-tether (once working), OpenVPN tunnels, chroot'ed Linux installs, kernel with PAE to use more ram (need to check this), CPU overclocking, LED Torch and other nerdy things we all like
cheers jayshah. probably be most interested in the WiFi tether myself. seems like some good stuff there then! I have rooted already just for the apps2sd, but it looks like that could be coming officially soon any way.
cheers

My best advice is don't do anything if you don't need to. Don't root just because you can. Think to yourself "am I happy with everything my phone can do NOW?" if yes, then leave it and enjoy your phone. If the answer is, no, I need it to do X, Y and Z, then you need to research. Can X, Y or Z be achieved with a third party app? If yes, then again, leave it and get the app. If no, then see if it IS possible, if you have Root access. Then and only then should you consider it.
I've personally not found anything compelling enough to Root yet, so I haven't.

Yeah, I heard that too but the Wifi tether is actually the main thing I need. That'll never become standard (given it's basically forbidden on at least T-Mo UK) so you'll always have to root.
I fully agree with what Aitese said. I really don't see the point in rooting, and taking the risk, if you won't use it. I've rebooted my device around 5 times in the last hour, making sure recovery works and installing Busybox as I'm not putting A2SD on it yet. Rooting isn't just something you should do because others have, it isn't for the faint hearted.
I think in the past devices have had to be rooted as early ROMS were crap on some early HTC devices. Its almost like when a new device comes out people now automatically race to get it rooted without really knowing why! For this device though, I dont see the point. Works well as is!
MarketEnabler? for people outside "authorized" zones, giving them the ability to get paid Apps.... wich is a huge downside atm

Yeah, I think this device is spot on as is, just with the exception of only being able to install apps into main memory. The HD2 I felt needed custom ROMS found my self flashing a bit on that and had a much better ROM on then stock.
I can't beleive the difference between the 2 os's though it's a nice change from windows mobile, which was just horrible to be honest in my experience.

Not so. Tmo UK are fine with it. HD2 supports it out of the box!

I used my Desire on T-mo most of last week in the evening while working away. ~700MB went through it according to my T-mo account page, all listed as costing £0.00 No special software (i.e. PDAnet) just HTC sync installed, and to be honest don't know if that's even needed.

My point was that Tmo don't have an issue with WiFi tethering in general. They certainly can't detect / stop you doing it.
There's probably not enough reason to root until Froyo comes out.

Yes - sorry, I didn't make it clear - I'm agreeing with you Although I wasn't using WiFi, just the cable, I didn't know you could tether with WiFi.

No no! I realized you were aggreeing with me! It was me that wasn't clear. I had realized you probably meant you had tethered using a cable and was just saying that Tmobile don't have a specific issue with WiFi Tethering as demonstrated by the fact that the HD2 supports it out of the box.
For me i need to be able to root in order to install language packs as i am stuck to europe, i can see chars etc but i do not get the keyboard. I rather use a default android keyboard than 3rd party

will the latest OTA ever get rooted?

I know people are working on it, but it doesn't look good now. I want to buy an evo soon, but no root kind of kills it. I can't use the wifi tether without root as I understand it and that is important to me. I guess there are some others that work without root but then you have to install software or something and thats kind of useless.
So does anyone know if it will definately get rooted?
I could probably live with the FPS issue, and I'd rather have the better camera than what comes with the epic, but no way I'm paying rediculous money for wifi tethering when i'm already paying 10 dollars per month extra for 4G that I don't have.
I'm sure it will get rooted soon enough. With that said, I can't even get Wifi tether to work right lol so I have been using easy tether
If it is the same steps they took on the Rogers HTC Dream, you might be waiting a really long time. As far as I know, root is still impossible on ones that have had the new rom flashed.

Usb tethering

Does Sprint charge for usb tethering or just the hot spot? Tried calling and got the typical "What's tethering?" response. Also did a search here and didn't find any thing. My plan details are not telling either.
Sent from my couch, with a beer and some pretzels while watching tv.
If you root, you will get free USB or wireless tethering. I rooted both of our Evo's specifically to get that working. I loaded the Sprint Lovers rom and it's all working perfectly. I just spent a few days at the MIL's house and used the heck out of it.
There are other advantages to rooting, too, like a bigger selection of apps, custom roms, etc.
Well, that's why I ask. I need to be able to tether, but not wirelessly. On my old TP2, and clear back to my Apache for that matter, it was simply a registry hack and most of the roms had stealth built in, so I never worried about it. But, with the EVO, it seems that stealth has to be dome by root, and root is a right swine to achieve at this point, due to the recent OTA. Thus, if I can use the usb tether without charge, then I will until things settle down a bit.
However, I am not keen on paying Sprint another $30 a month on top of the extra charge for unlimited data, because that would be redundant. Not to mention the extra $10 a month that I have to pay which the guy at the store called the "Coolness Charge" So, when I figure it out I will root and put the screws to the Powers That Be. But, for now, I need to have a contingency plan because college classes are almost all internet submitted, and work won't let me use their wifi, and tends to get touchy when you try hacking it...

Just root using unrEVOked and then go to the wifi tether website and download the most current version of the application and you will be able to put out a strong G signal. Or use pda net for wired tethering.

I have been reading that unrEVOked3 looses the 4G encryption keys, has that changed?

:( Best tether program without root?

Well.. I searched the forums around a bit and didn't really find what I was looking for. Maybe I just fail at searching.
The screen on my EVO cracked so I got a new replacement. I was gleeful, hooked the sucker up to my laptop and ran Unrevoked... only to find that it was failing over and over again.
Finally when I looked at the forums, I found out that I got owned. Yep, the shiny new phone I got through insurance has the new hboot on it with s-on.
I thought maybe someone would come out with a root method, and there's a 15-day grace period before I am absolutely required to send my old phone back.. but alas, the 15 days are around the corner. I must switch to this new, unrooted, dismal phone.
So! I was wondering what apps would be best used to tether my 4G connection!
I already know of PDANet.. but I was wondering if there were any other alternate programs I could use to tether with no root. Any input folks? I appreciate it.
I believe you can use easy tether, but I also believe it is wired tethering only.

What are you tethering... I tether my tablet and use PDANEt Tablet....Honestly if you had your Evo for a while then you know the Tether methods and also that PDANet is the best one outside of rooting.

Barnacle still needs root I believe....could be wrong but I dont think its better than PDAnet which also masks the fact that your tethering
I think PDANet and EasyTether are pretty similar, except PDANet has a bluetooth option. For wired USB tethering I think they both get the job done. EasyTether is cheaper, so that might be a plus if you don't think you need the bluetooth option. Especially given we hope there still will be root eventually, right?

[Q] One X+ tethering block by AT&T

Hi Guys. Really sorry if this has been asked alot and beaten to death but an hour of searching and reading hasnt really revealed an answer.
My company just gave me an HTC One X+ from AT&T since I didnt want an iPhone. Seems like a good device but I did run into one snag.
My previous phone was a Galaxy S2 but was having major battery drain issues with Exchange Server so I thought I would try a different manufacture and keep my fingers crossed. The snag is this: with my SGS2 I was able to use FoxFi (and others) for WiFi tethering/hotspot and it worked great even bone-stock. With the HOX it seems At&t has gotten a little smarter and can detect when a program is trying to hotspot and I get taht message saying to call them if I want it enabled when I start FoxFi.
I have the paid version of clockworkmod and that will not work at all - says failed to connect when I hit start in Windows 7. I also have the paid version of PDAnet and that kind of works but the connection get dropped pretty regularly making it unreliable. Not sure if this has anything to do with Att's detections since they did gave me some trouble with the SGS2 as well (not exactly same though).
My question is this: can I get FoxFi to work WITHOUT root? Since it is brand new and not mine technically I hate to start hacking the thing up so quickly. But the tethering is a function I really like.
Thanks
Ernie

Did you ever get it to work? I have rooted my One x+ and have FoxFi and it still won't work. A friend of mine said something about using Titanium Backup to freeze a service for tethering to work....but I haven't been able to figure out how to do that yet.
Thanks
Matt
No, no luck but I havent tried rooting it yet. I posted this over in the HOX+ forum as well and everyone says rooting is the way to go. Discouraging that it is not working for you. I dont know enough about Titanium to help you, hopefully someone else here can.
I gave my old SGS2 to my wife which is no on Straight Talk and hotspoting/tethering still works fine for her :/.
