[Q] Problem With Download Sites Like 4shared and Rapidshare - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I cant download files from 4Shared or rapidshare. all i get is a small file and if i change the extension to HTML you can see that the file is actually a new page to download the file from with a higher timer.
I tried wiping browser data.
I tried wiping cache/dalvik.
I tried a fresh wipe with the stock rom and no apps installed.
i tried CM6.
i tried different browsers (Opera, xScope, Dolphin)
i tried the download plugin setting in astro and linda file managers.
I tried using the tornado download manager.
just cant think of anything else. this all used to work for me and i'm not sure when exactly it stopped. currently using Fresh 3.2 with the kernel it comes with. this problem doesnt happen on megaupload.
Please help! anyone have any ideas?

I had this happen once... I am assuming you are downloading on your evo. When downloading, make sure the phone stays awake(touching screen), or disable the screen to sleep, and monitor the progress in the notifications dropdown to ensure you are getting the full download.

Yep my screen stays awake. Monitoring it in downloads doesn't help.
Just to be clear this happens on 3g and wifi.

Then I don't have an answer!
Good luck.

possibly an issue with those 2 roms? I've seen people mention that issue before, but I've never had an issue with that on Baked Snack with the stock browser.

Ok just tried baked snack 1.7
No luck.
Wiped everything twice with RA.
Thanks for trying though.

what are you trying to get? Possibly an issue with that specific download? post the link, and I'll try and get it myself at some point tonight and see what happens

This has happened to me on a consistent basis since owning the evo on every rom I've flashed. The only one that worked for me 100% of the time was mediafire.

That so strange. Now its not working for me either. I havent downloaded to my phone in a while, but I specifically remember 4share always worked fine for me. Sorry man - don't know what's going on.

4shared worked a couple times for me today! Maybe it was a problem with the website.
Edit: that one link still doesn't work

If you are using any type of add blocker on your evo... turn it off.... alot of legit redirect links get blocked by these apps.

i would try a diff browser. stock browser has those issues. i personally use opera when dl. never had a issue with opera.

Tried reverting on adfree.
Didn't help.thanks for trying.

Can't use opera. The timer doesn't run once the page loads.

It may have something to do with the browser identifying as mobile. My Samsung Moment did it too when I tried to download other zips and rars using the stock browser. I know what your talking about, it downloads about 5k and says complete. Also it sucks balls wlhaving to wait 180 seconds to download a ROM, at least use mediafire folks!

UAString set to desktop. Mobile view turned off.
Still no luck.

4shared works great for me, but lately when I download something the timer takes ages to finish. If it says your download will be ready in 15 seconds, it could take a minute or so for it to be ready, any ideas?

[Q] Why do most file downloads fail?

So you have some files you want to download using the phone... but as soon as the download starts, one of two things happens:
1. It immediately stops and says that it is finished even though you know you didn't just pull 500mb in half a second.
2. It won't download and just says unsuccessful.
This is starting to irritate me. Doesn't matter which browser or user-agent.
Thoughts?
EDIT: It may have been the user agent... didn't think that would matter
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Happens to me too...usually like rapidshare or fileserve and other certain sites...but yet megaupload, 4shared, mediafire, and duckload works...havent figured out why

Fileserve didn't work with the Android user-agent, but I changed user agent to Mac Desktop and it worked...
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Actually nevermind... even with a different user agent, it doesn't work consistently.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
I've always thought it was due to a hiccup in the signal. I know that if I switched from wifi to 3g in the middle of a download, it would fail during the time you have no connection. Maybe it's because the signal is getting interrupted.

I don't know if the stock android browser supports it, but in Dolphin Browser or Opera you can download any type of file. You can use something like file expert to open the zip file.

I've never experienced any issues downloading any files, let alone zip files, using multiple browsers. I'm currently using a blacked out version of Dolphin mini (ty Starsky's rom) and have yet to have an issue still. I usually use Root Explorer to move the file to the folder of my choice, and I guess roms take a bit longer than most files (size) but never any issues. Good luck!

What ROM are you on?
I think it's the file host some of the rom devs use, or possibly his router. For certain roms, downloading over wifi fails no matter what I do, and I end up using 3G.(unlimited plan, 150mb is nothing)

is this on 3g or wifi?
if its on 3g i think (personal opinion btw) the 3g connection is not able to handle rom sized downloads so after so long it thinks its just timed out cuz sprint(aka towers or whatever) think we are being ridiciuos trying to download a file of that size over 3g
could be wrong (known to happen) or something else
Are you sure you aren't losing connection in the middle of download? That has happened to me, and it timed out.

Right after I click "download file" on the browser, I can see its loadin on the notification bar and then right away it says , download complete. Which is not cus its not the size its supposed 2b

Have you tried reflashing the rom? Or flashing a different build?
Wiped cache/dalvik in recovery? If you don't feel like Reflashing right away, that is.
You can open the downloads app and turn off "download on WLAN only" if you have the option. Or turn it on if it's off. Even though it's on wifi, maybe this could help. While you're there, retry any failed downloads. I had the same problem on the stock browser on MIUI, retrying over & over until it downloaded would eventually work. I didn't have the problem on xScope or Opera Mobile.
Note that I'm going backwards in order of things to try, that's just how they popped into my head.

Try using decks 1.3D with tiamat 3.3.7 kernel. My assumption is that it is because you are using cm7. Cm7 has always had problems and made my phone all screwy in one way or another because they build it for so many different devices and when they fix something for one phone, it breaks something else for another phone. Decks is based off of cm7 but he made it the way it should be... FLAWLESS. All you have to do is add adw launcher and you have the cm7 launcher that your used to. If that doesn't work then pm me and ill see if I can help you out
P.s. I have never had problems with decks 1.3D so it should be worth a shot

Is it happening on wifi only at location? Or is it happening on wifi everywhere? Is your SD card ok? Have you backed up your SD card, reformatted it and then tried again? If that doesn't work then I would suggest trying another ROM.
Wifi everywhere BUT I just tried firefox and it worked, I didnt try it at first cus I always had problems with the beta but now its working with the stable firefox
SomeHow its only happening with other brwosers exepta firfox, still kinda want to know why. Maybe a bad flash of the rom?
Thanks for suggestions tho

Same thing here (in Firefox). I Google'd it and found that other people having the same problem on other sites too. I checked one of those sites and the same thing happened, page loads a little-bit and then get the blank page when ads.pubmatic.com is being accessed.
The funny thing is I blocked pubmatic.com and ads.pubmatic.com in my hosts file and it's still happening. It doesn't seem to happen in Chrome, though.
For me, I notice when I try to go back in internet explorer it takes like 15 clicks, so I actually use the mouse and click the tab on the top of the xda webpage. If I right click the back arrow for the browser it lists a bunch of ads, which explains why it takes so many clicks to get back. It is like this on every computer I have used xda on recently. Xda is the only site that I have this issue.

Having the same problem accessing this site from my laptop as well ..... arrrrrgh, its also affecting transformer forums. Anyone found a way to fix this problem yet
Blocking via hosts file doesn't appear to work, nor does blocking "ads.pubmatic.com" in Adblock Plus. After configuring the latter, the page still hangs, only this time on google-analytics.com, so now I'm not sure if it's pubmatic.com or something else.
I came across older (2008, 2009) results in Google reporting the same problem with pubmatic.com, so I really have no idea what's going on.

Thanks for letting us know, that's good to know there's one way to fix it.
That's not an option for me, unfortunately. There are still add-ons that I can't use outside of FF 3.6x. I'd rather know what exactly is going on and fix it without updating to the FF-Version-of-the-Month.

No, it's definitely not you. I've come across several posts today from various other sites from people who have been experiencing this issue over the past 3-4 days.
I'm not sure if it's a coincidence, but many of them are running vBulletin. The issue seems to be restricted to Firefox.
Even after blocking a bunch of pubmatic.com sites in my hosts file, the issue is still happening, only the blank page hangs on www.google-analytics.com. I didn't want to go as far as blocking that, but I did anyway in my Hosts file with no success.
I came across this plug-in that I'm going to try out. This is an official Google addon that allows you to opt-out of google-analytics.com tracking.
http://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout?hl=en
Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on (BETA)
To provide website visitors more choice on how their data is collected by Google Analytics, we have developed the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. The add-on communicates with the Google Analytics JavaScript (ga.js) to indicate that information about the website visit should not be sent to Google Analytics.
If you want to opt-out, download and install the add-on for your current web browser. The Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on is available for Microsoft Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari and Opera.
Click to collapse
EDIT: No dice. I installed the addon and now the hanging blank page stops loading. It still jumps to the blank page.
One other comment I read suggested that the sites themselves should verify that they've put the Google Analytics code at the very bottom of their page templates where it belongs. But I would assume that the GA code was put in place a long time ago, and doubt that would be the issue here.
---------- Post added at 02:34 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:21 PM ----------
Success!
I added "www.google-analytics.com" to my hosts file, in addition to "google-analytics.com" and everything is fine now.
One thing I didn't try was to only use the Google opt-out addon, without adding any "google-analytics" entries to my hosts file.
If someone who prefers not to alter their hosts file wants to try it the addon-only way, please let us know if it works for you.
Thanks, folks!

I am having the same issue with larger files, usually I just try a different browser until one finally works (ie Chrome, Dolphin, xScope, Next Browser, Lightning, Boat Browser, Firefox, Opera, etc. - Usually one out of two or three will work.)
Question for Aerowinder AND anyone reading this running CM10.1, are you getting hotboots (random reboots without the SGS3 boot logo) on CM10.1? --- I've had this happen a lot when I'm taking the time to download these files on WiFi... I read somewhere that the d2mo CM Team is working on a new kernal to solve such issues, but its a pain when doing such tasks on WiFi...
