Dualshock 3 - Captivate Accessories

Can the DUALSHOCK 3 be used as an accessory to play emulated games on the Captivate. Such as the PSX emulator.
Thanks
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

Well, first, it would seem that we would need a driver written for android for the controller. Looks like an outfit out of china made one for Windows Vista/7 to get the dualshock3 to work via bluetooth, which is what we'd use, of course.
Secondly, the psx emulator for android would need input-mapping, so the controls could be directed by the dualshock3. I don't know if the app does or not, but this sounds like a hella-awesome idea!
They have the BGP-100 bluetooth gamepad, and it costs about $25 for the hardware, and another $10 for the driver... (lame-sauce, for sure)
Now, I'm just getting into android development, and I bet android drivers couldn't be sufficiently coded using App Inventor! LOL But maybe someone else could look into it, for sure.
---EDIT---
Actually, just found this thread - forum (dot) xda-developers (dot) com/showthread.php?p=7132122
that linked to here - tomasz (dot) sterna (dot) tv/2010/02/play-games-on-nokia-n900-with-ps3-sixaxis-controller/
and tomasz states that it should be relatively straight forward to recompile for android. Looks like I'm gonna try and step up to the sdk. Woot!

Thanks for the info. What about using the controller with the SNES emulator. Would the same logic apply. Looks like the SNES emulator has support for external controllers.

If you or anybody else get this working, I'll be sending 10 bucks to your/their paypal account. However, you should probably be aware that Samsung has implemented their own proprietary bluetooth stack in place of BlueZ (or BluZ or whatever the vanilla BT is), and it's a bit wonky - this is why the Wii controllers won't work with the Galaxy S phones. Hopefully we can get around this or better yet replace the Samsung BT with the vanilla implementation and get rid of the weird-ness.
Good luck!

this would be GREAT as i don't have a Wiimote but four dualshock 3s!

So, after doing a little digging, here's what I've come up with.
After reading this thread over on the androidcommunity,
androidcommunity [dot] com/forums/f7/bluetooth-3-0-is-not-enabled-in-android-2-1-or-2-2-a-39462/
It looks like us Captivate users are stuck until Google integrates BT 3.0 into android. As of now, BlueZ has a kernel that supports BT 3.0, BlueZ 4.71, Google just hasn't moved towards implementing it.
I'm still going to look into getting this to work, but I'm gonna need alot of coffee.

Would be great. Let me know if u get it workin.

So, now that Bluez is included in the Cognition 2.2 b6 ROM...that means we can use the bluetooth controller? I'm now digging this more and more.

bump^^^
I've been searching for an answer to this question. I hope we can get a way to use our dualshock 3 controllers on our Android That would be the last piece of the puzzle for true nostalgia and would help us touchscreen users out a lot.

Request: playstation3 remote

Hei, and BRAVO to the brilliant minds out there for creating so manny programs, and apps for us with non develloper skils at all. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
My request is for a PS3 remotecontrol for use on dvd ore blueray playback.
Mabye allonge the same lines as Gremote, but via bluetooth.
I do belive it should be possible, and I would deffenetly donate for something like that.
Thanks again guys, and keep up the fantastic work.
chriss66
something defo worth paying for!
No intention in bringing your hopes down, however the same talk has circulated the forums for the Wii and 0 progress has been made on it. Maybe if there is more interest in the PS3, it'd be possible but it seems like it's a tough task.
I'm not sure but does wii support bluetooth and at the end of the day ps3 is more being refered to as a super computer so i'm sure working with hardware like that would be alot easier than the wii but this is only an assumption.
an app like that for the ps3 would be awesome!!! if the great minds of xda could cook something i def buy not only a beer but a case
It would help if there was a total amount donated (or willing to donate) in the first post. That way a developer would know how much this project is worth to them.
as much as i'd love this this, the request/idea has been around for a long time without progress..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=347772
but if it can be done on a blackberry there doesn't seem to be any reason why it can't be done on winmo:
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/01/10/unify4lifes-blackberry-products-demoed-at-ces/
I Dont need the hole keybord, typing meseges thing, just som simple play, pause, skip, etc, etc.
And i don't think u have to do ennything with the ps3, just a ""simple"" prog fore the phone. Butt, then again, I'm no develloper
This sounds very interesting. Im ashamed to say but I've always been to tight to pay out for the remote as I just dont want to add yet another remote control to library of remotes. And this would give me the remote I would love to have without adding to the collection!
Would there be a way to use the standard keyboard thats on windows mobile and maybe add the play and stop buttons to the application itself. Might not be able to be done but I dont know how to program these things, just an idea.

i would drop in $60US towards the cause. it really would be a cool program to have. hopefully we can have a few more people make some donation's and maybe some one out there would take up the challenge.
50 AUD for a working remote with WVGA portrait and landscape support.
A bluetooth keyboard for the PS3 like i used Pebbles on my Treo 650 to remote control the PC under the TV would also be cool. And worth some cash.
I would donate 10 dollars for a working remote for PS3
searching the net there seems to be alot of interest all across the board from ppc forums to ps3 forums. but heres something interesting i found a kind of hybrid wm cross psp.

[REQ] Evo Bluetooth compatibility with PS3

I found a few old (and dead) threads on the subject, but I wanted to start a new one now that there are a lot more Evo owners out there who may help keep this going. Feel free to bump this and maybe we can get some support from the devs by demonstrating this will be worth their while.
I have read that the phone was not loaded with a proper Bluetooth stack making the Evo incompatible with several Bluetooth devices out there; the PS3 being one of them. I don't know how accurate that is, or if there are more underlying issues which prevent my requests from being plausible. With that said, here is a list of things I would be interested in:
1) Instead of paying $20 for the Blu-Ray remote for the PS3, I'd rather pay for an app that can control the basic functions of the PS3's media player. Me, personally, I don't like using the PS3 controller for video playback AT ALL. Also, it'd be one less remote to have in the house if I can use my phone instead of Sony's remote.
2) Use my phone as a headset. I cannot stand having an earpiece or headphones on for longer than a few minutes. If I could just pair my phone to the PS3 with a speaker phone option during online gaming, that would be LOVELY.
3) The most obvious one is being able to use the phone as a keyboard instead of buying the keypad that attaches to the PS3 controller. I do have the keypad, but I would put it on eBay in a split second if I were able to do it with my phone.
I'm sure there are some other things people have thought of that would be handy. Feel free to PM me anything else you may want to be able to do and I will gladly add it to the OP. Hopefully there are enough people out there interested in this so as to warrant the devs taking the time to figure this out. Honestly, I do not have the time to maintain a bounty thread, and it is not my intention to start one. However, I will say that I will make a $50 donation to anyone who can get this to work, as that is how much the Blu-Ray remote and keypad cost me on eBay. I am confident that I will not be the only one who donates, but again, this is not a bounty thread and will not be treated as such. If you say you will donate and one of the devs comes through, please keep your word and make your donation.
Mods: My apologies if anything I posted here is outside of the guidelines of this forum; feel free to call me out on any changes I should make.
Thanks in advance to all the devs, mods and forum members for your support on this.

Our phones can already work as remotes for certain applications, which leads me to believe it can be done by someone with the knowledge and (more importantly) the drive. With apps like Gmote 2.0 already on the market, I don't see why not. I have a Samsung Bluetooth ear piece that pairs to my PS3, and it is 2-3 years old, at least. Why can't the phone do it?
Maybe an app isn't even necessary. Maybe it can be a flashable file that just adds Bluetooth info to whatever is on the phone.
I'm pretty sure this is possible. +1
Devs will correct me if I am wrong.
I love this idea. Id throw in 20 if its workable.
And another twenty if I could use my phone as a tv remote.

Request the GameKlip for the Captivate Glide

Ok my dear fellow users, here´s the thing, since the guys from Game Gripper aren't interest in adapting their product to our devices, I figured out it's time for a different approach, this, is the GameKlip:
This is what I've send to the guy who made this little piece of magic:
Hi, my name is Santiago Console, I’m a Captivate Glide user and an active participant of the XDA Forum dedicated to the development for this phone. A few month’s back, we gathered a bunch of request, from people who were trying to make this guys:
http://www.game-gripper.com/
Adapt their product to our phone, for some reason, they didn’t bother, even after we gather more people than the D3 Community, and that guys ended up getting it. That aside, will you be interested in adapting the GameKlip to our phone ? I can assure you, that, at least, you will sell 30 units, right after you set up the pre-order J
To know the dimensions and the shape of our phone, you can look into this page:
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i927_captivate_glide-4071.php
Thanks, and I hope you can make this happen
END OF THE E-MAIL
He answered that if get's enough requests, he will make a GameKlip for the Glide and, come on, there's a lot of pros about this thing:
1) If you already have a PS3 Controller, you don't have to spend a lot of cash to play like a real Gamer on your device.
2) You can take advantage of the Glide's OTG functionality.
3) It's only a "Clip", so it's not like it's going to broke, get lost, or anything XD
So, the idea it's the same as with the GameGripper request before, so, please, If you have some time, and want to have this "Clip" available for the Glide, take a few minutes, and write an E-Mail to the creator, and tell hin that, If he makes it, you will buy it. His E-Mail is [email protected]
You can learn more about the GameKlip here:

Thanks for letting me know about this, filled out a request.
What happens if you try to purchase the "Phone Only" on the Rogers web site?

After putting in your credit card #, can you have it sent to Argentina?
I filled out a form as well. It would be great to have this accessory for the phone.

I was thinking about this, maybe I can even make Rogers send it to my courrier on the US, it's there any custom taxes for sending something from Canada to US ? Because if it is, then, I would just make my courrier pick it up directly from Rogers, it would be a little more expensive, but, safest as well.
And, about the thread, keep going, Game Gripper for the Glide it's possible, we just have to make sure that people over GG know that there's a lot of customers willing to pay for this device.
I like the iControlPad personally, it has 2 analog sticks that are great to use, but will request this for you guys anyways!

Bump !!!!!
Done! How many submissions are they supposed to get before they consider doing it?
Maybe it's time to face the reality, we are not going to get the Game Gripper for the Glide, also, with MOGA around the corner, I would discourage anyone who's considering to buy the iControlPad, because, no mather how expensive the MOGA could be, It can't be very far from the iControlPad's price, also, it has better materials, and support from the big fishes like EA and Gameloft.
Farewell Game Gripper, you had your chance, and you lost it.
I've edited the OP, please check it out:

Defcon NFC-related stuff

I'm not sure how many XDAers go to Defcon each year, but there were some interesting NFC-related talks. For those who don't know, Defcon is an annual computer security convention in Las Vegas.
Here's are the presentations from a couple of the talks. If the slides don't work on the site, just download the PDF on the top right of the frame... replace hxxp with http. "new" users can't post links ):

Thanks for the info!
Sure. It's a bit off topic but I spent my time in line at the convention trying to get the serial driver on my skyrocket to interface with the Defcon badge's serial port. With a usb host adapter my phone would power the badge but I couldn't seem to make my ftdi kernel module work.
The Defcon badge was programmable over serial, had vga, ps/2, and 7 or so programmable leds, plus a short range ir for communication between badges. Would have been a cool hack to control it via android.
Defcon is a great place to learn, I'd recommend going if you ever get the chance

where did you ask this? Because I have never heard of mojang responding in that way, only the minecraft forums who are not representatives of mojang.
Minecraft PE supports the XPeria play controls and the touch controls only. No idea why its only the xperia which gets hardware control. There are apps for rooted devices to map hardware controls to touch, perhaps one of those may work with the shield and minecraft. There might even be some way of mapping shield buttons to the xperia buttons and fooling minecraft into using them, but that is something I am more doubtful of.

Actually, yes to both of those. There is an app that I have confirmed works for the shield in such a way
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.locnet.gamekeyboard&hl=en
It allows physical control to touchscreen emulation, or xperia play emulation, and various other forms of emulation.
THIS APP REQUIRES ROOT
If you need root, visit this link: (note: currently rooting on the nvidia shield requires unlocking the bootloader, and that voids your warranty.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2400029
I have tested this app to be working on final fantasy dimensions with the physical control to touch screen emulation, and it works great. The right stick drifts a bit though, and i believe that is a side effect of the right stick acting as a virtual mouse sometimes but I could be wrong.
Anyway. Hope this helps.

: / you know its that kind of attitude that I relieve is responsible for the lack of decent games on android. There are a few but most of them cost money. And if a game is good, I willing to put down few bucks. Those free games are never really free anyway. They are pay to win.
Sorry for the rant, but I felt that I needed to voice my opinion .
And in my experience, devs are pretty good at integrating features that people ask for, particularly controlled support.
And what do you mean about mojang being misleading about mine craft pocket edition being cross platform?... That's the first I've heard of that.

I would not mind paying for a game if the developer stood by their game and actually helped the people who buy it with problems.
My comment about free games is that if you get a free game you need to expect no support or bad support, but if you pay for a game you should get decent support. I have never once gotten decent support for paid games on Google play, I have always gotten better support from free games.
And for cross-platform play setup a minecraft server on your desktop and connect to that from minecraft pe on your android device.
about the pay to win games there are also plenty of free games that are not pay to win.

I believe you are mistaken. You can, in no way shape or form, play cross platform from minecraft pocket edition to pc, you can play cross platform between android and ipod/ipad. but that's about it. My main reason for posting is that the game controls are not supported.
My frustration is that the support staff are being very very rude to me for trying to get the controls supported.
I can live with out cross-platform play, but they will not even accept it as a suggestion.
If i knew I would have to spend even more money to use the controls I would not have payed for minecraft pe in the first place. there were other game i could have spent the same 7$ on that would have actually worked correctly.

Dude, I think you were asking in the wrong place. And you have to think about it this way:
The shield just came out so of course alot of things wont support the controller.
Im sure you weren't the first person to ask for shield support, so they are likely getting annoyed at people asking all the time.
They dont take suggestions because if they did, they would have to consider thousands of requests a day. Minecraft is way more popular than any of the other android games.
Where were you talking to them?

Hmm...
That is odd.
Usually they are pretty nice to people.
Anyway, sorry you had a bad experience.
I'm sure that in one way or another minecraft pocket edition will eventually get shield support.
In the mean time, It is likely that another app like the one i posted will become available for free.
Minecraft pocket edition has very little in common with minecraft on PC at the end of the day.
Pocket edition primarily consists of a C library. They then use a wrapper to expose the libraries features on android, iOS and raspbian independently. The raspbian version has even further modifications.
Minecraft on PC is java.
Ultimately pocket edition is just a glorified minecraft clone from the same developers. Shares no similarities code wise. Highly unlikely that it could ever link between the original java version, the PE version or the xbox version. They never claim anywhere that it can do that either.
They do claim that the hardware controls are for Xperia Play, they make no claim that it is compatible with any other gamepad.
The Shield controls and of course external gamepads are exposed to android as Human Interface Devices and you can use the standard android library to interface with them. The Xperia Play controls are not exposed as an HID for some reason, some of the regular buttons can be treated as an HID (with really weird mappings actually, think circle is mapped to Alt Key plus the android back button or something bizarre) but the thumb"sticks" cant and sony give an actual android lib which covers the regular buttons too, most developers just use that, including mojang for some reason.
Honestly, I think they need to get their fingers out of their asses and add HID input with proper assignments and joystick support. There are quite a few android devices out there with hardware keyboards etc,. Hell, sisters netbook came dual booted with android but has no touchscreen, that would be even more unplayable than the Shield for minecraft without 3rd party apps (and no, cant just switch over to windows and play MC there, without the optifine mod it gets 2 fps, with it gets 3, unplayable, increase java priority and the system cant keep up and you get input lag anyway, all drivers are updated)

In addition, C is much more ideal for games in general over Java. On a mobile device you need C so the OS can manage the memory better.

I emailed mohjang about this and he emailed a pic of him taking a piss on the shield lifting two birds at the camera. He's awesome! ^_^
