I don't think the devs have figured out how to enable this... I could be wrong tho. Why do you want to enable it...? If you want to save battery just turn off the data cxn, wifi, bt, gps, etc.

There's a way. Select your preferred network, and it'll show up. Or disable/re-enable data, and it will show up for a few seconds. Ironically, it works. Or you could disable 3G and enable only 2G in WinMo

Thanks Works great

Use only 2G networks.

I have a problem with setting android to only use 2G networks. I can tick an option under settings "Use only 2G networks" but after i leave the settings menu it gets "unticked" again threfore i,m constantly on 3G which wouldn't be a problem but in the areas where there is no 3G signal android loses signal and wont connect to 2G network. I can turn off 3G under winmo tof orce android to only use 2G networks but it takes time. My question is can anyone successfully setup their android to use only 2G networks?
Same Problem
I´m having the same problem and for me it´s worse because it drain my battery really fast (don´t last more than 4 hours).
Could somebody please fix it as soon as possible because this way is really difficult to use android as main OS.
When I put a Sim Card that doesn´t have 3g I don´t have this battery problem.
I hope somebody could help me with this problem.
could someone please look into this? 3G kills my tilt realy fast too. this is the only thing stoping my from using android as my main os.

Try this:
$ su
# rwsystem
# nano system/build.prop
Find the part that says something about default_network=0. Try changing it to 1. Save with dpad-center+x, then y and enter.
# rosystem
Restart your phone to have it take effect. I'm currently trying out the value 3 which is "use GSM or WCDMA, whichever provides the strongest signal" and it seems to work better for me. Before I often had switched to Roaming after calls and somethings loosing connection completely, but I have only tested it for a short time so I'm not 100% sure if it helped or not.
Next release will include scripts to change this and some other things easily.
Oh, and the value 1 is supposed to be "GSM only" so it might help.

Kalt, should we change this "ro.telephony.default-network=0"? to "1"
If so, it didn't work for me . I'm still on 3G.

Yes that's the one. Well, getting information about the settings in build.prop isn't easy. I'm don't know if the information I found was a fact or just a guess.

HELP!!!
I have tried everything here and still no 2G. I love android but battery life sucks. There has to be a way to force 2G all the time. 3G is great but if batterylife will suffer so badly I want to turn it off perminently. Does anyone know how to do this? I'm using VaniljEclair RLS7c and I have been messing with the scrips in the update and still nothing after reeboot.

I have tried everything too with almost all builds (1.6 2.1 and 2.2). My opinion is that ro.telephony.default-network command do not work on Kaiser. If ro.telephony.default-network is removed from build.prop nothing happens. Maybe TelephonyPprovider.apk is something to do with 2G 3G switching.
Bump... Please someone help us!! There has to be some hack we can try.
Please help us!!!
I agree,
Would be great to be able to force certain networks. If you look at the power usage/ per network the faster the network the more power it consumes. I'd like to be able to by default use the low speed and switch it to fast when I'm really using the phone. My EVO has a 4G widget switch. If it didn't the phone would be worthless to me as 4G in my area is not great. 2hrs 4G on (with no 4g network) = -40% battery... Love to do the same for 3G as that would save "about" 20% more battery life alone. I might get a whole day of use without charging...

As far as i know apndroid disables both 2g/3g connections and we only need to block system from using 3g connections leaving 2g still connectable.

I've tried that a while ago and it didn't work for me.
I've bin going thru htcgeneric-ril.c (source of libhtcgeneric-ril.so), provided in another topic and noticed this lines:
Code:
switch (rat)
{
case 0: at_rat = "1,2"; break;/* Dual Mode - WCDMA preferred*/
case 1: at_rat = "0"; break; /* GSM only */
case 2: at_rat = "2"; break; /* WCDMA only */
}
Could there be a solution lurking in those lines to ongoing 2G/3G switching problem on Kaiser devices with Android?
Those look like the settings from the phone information screen in testing, it's certainly the right area to be looking in.
Question: who's gonna be brave enough to hack htcgeneric-ril.c and recompile that lib?
I already asked n2rjt to do it, if it's possible - still waiting for his reply.

Wifi only & Disable GSM?

Guys I am going away with work for four months somewhere which will cost me fortune to use my phone. That said I want to take it with me use it as a tablet of sorts as I have access to wifi.
I know I can turn off mobile data, but can I disable the GSM modem too. Basically I want airplane mode but with wifi enabled. That way there is no chance of any costs been incurred.
Thanks
Don't know if it works for you, but I just tested like this:
- Go to Settings/Wireless & Networks/Mobile networks/Network operators
- Just select an operator different from the sim card you have
Wifi should still work.
I use a free app from market called airplane settings that allows you to select which radios to keep active when turning on airplane mode. It works with latest Runny v4 so should work for you.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
Turn on Airplane mode, then turn on WiFi. Wifi should be turned on and gsm is still off
I do what i want, because I can.

I must than be doing something wrong here. The moment I go into Airplane mode, my WiFi gets turned off and won't turn on untill I disable airplane mode. So what's the catch here.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
What you want is very easy just go to setting> wireless. And then take the mark away by data connection.
And if you want airplane mode with wifi enabled that's easy to: First put airplane mode on and after that switch wifi back on.
Yep, switch to Airplane-Mode and turn on Wifi.
I did that some weeks ago when I went to Israel and gonna do it again when i'll be in England this weekend.

Yes indeed or else you will be charged if people speak into your voicemail. Well I already disabled it for a long time, I don't see the use off voicemail, people can better send an e-mail or text message.

Are you guys running stock ROM's or costom ones.
I tested it yesterday several times, but when I go into Airplane mode, I can enable WiFi but it does not connect to known AccessPoints.
Also does not give me a list of found AccessPoints.
[edit]
Just because I wouldn't instantly disbelieve you guyes I tried it one more time, and a miracle happend.
It connected to the WiFi access point on Airplane mode.
So what you were saying is the correct way
Had forgotten about the voicemail part, thankfully I can phone it myself before i leave and disable it from the options menu so thats easy enough. Will just place a new message on it from me saying I am away and to contact me by email.
Thanks for the help though, I knew you guys would have a solution to this!
*#*#4636#*#*
1. Put *#*#4636#*#* into the Dialer (or use any application available on the Market like 4636 — takes you to the same service screen)
2. Choose Phone Information
3. Press Turn off radio
Thanks

Turning ON Airplane and Switching ON WiFi works like a charm.
Thanks..
I know its old thread but good for googlers. Airplane mode will not disable internal modem as you can still see its active under battery details straight red bar = weak or searching for signal. Its draining battery and its still able send/receive data. I read about flashing a script to completely turn it off and cut its power but it shows pie security error in terminal -.- I deleted dialer&related stuff from phone as its only used with VoiP so I can't access service menu. Do you still get red line in battery details and does the modem stays off after a reboot? Some devices you can actually physically remove the modem.

quick way to toggle LTE?

Hey all --
Is there an easy to way to toggle LTE? II'd like to have a quick option to choose LTE but not to leave it on all of the time since my battery dies like 3x as fast.
I know there's the menu option that is like four menus in and requires a reboot.
SETTINGS --> MORE SETTINGS --> MOBILE NETWORKS --> NETWORK MODE
I'm hoping there's a better way.
Thanks!
I'm sure someone will eventually add it to our toggles
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
As tdwp16 mentioned hopefully someone will add the toggle in. As of right now there is no easy way. That appears to be the ONLY way at the moment

I will have to give that a shot. I have it installed on my SGS3 which is still unrooted at the moment. It at least has not Force Closed on me (like some of the reviewers complained about), but I have yet to find 4G. This is probably just do to the northern part of my area where I live missing coverage in quite a few spots.
I've decided to give this a shot. However, LTE is not available in my area so I will have no idea if it even works....

i'll give it a shot and report back. thanks for the suggestion!
I have every reason that it can be accomplished natively through the settings menu.
Because, if you dial ##3282# and you go through the menus (i forgot the exact one), but it allows you to switch between different modes, LTE being one of them, on the fly without the need to reboot. So I guess all I have to do is remove the reboot option from settings and it should switch the same way that it does in the ##3282# menu.
The app noted in this thread worked for me as far as taking me to the settings but it doesnt work like a toggle does. That being said there is no LTE here in Phoenix yet so I'm screwed either way LOL We have some regular spots of 4g but I dont believe this phone works on regular 4g, unless I'm wrong??? Anyone know?

Yea, I am having the same issue in the northern part of Dallas. LTE is not very good here yet either for Sprint, but hopefully if they sell enough phones and get enough complaints they will break out more towers faster.
Actually I have since uninstalled the App and since then I have not been able to locate LTE at all. I tried putting it back on in an area that I had previously attained 4G and still no go. I hope that Switch It did not mess with my antenna or some such. Just wanted to put the warning out there.

I don't have the SGSIII yet, since Sprint has not launched yet in my area, but I had a couple of questions.
Sounds like you are pretty knowledgeable, thanks for the info. When looking at the phone, I was surprised to see and didn't know the reason for the reboot when turning on LTE. Do you know the reason for the reboot? Is it anything logical or necessary?
I would hope that this will be something Dev's start building into their roms, unless of course there is a legitimate reason for the reboot.
Thanks!

The problem with that method -- which also requires your MSL code -- is that if you use it to select LTE, it forces the handset to LTE only without 1x or EVDO. They are mutually exclusive.
This can be used to bypass the normal settings that automatically upshift and downshift between LTE and CDMA data as a threshold function of signal strength, to force LTE. But it has the side effect of killing the voice/text connectivity.

From terminal type:
su
radiooptions
This will display the list of options for the radio (if I remember correctly 1 disables)
Make your selection and exit terminal
The only thing is it doesn't stick on a reboot. You'll have to do this each time you boot. I do have a script that you can use that does it for you and you can set it to run on boot to turn the radio off on boot. I'll post a link soon if you want to look at it.
Edit: Here's a link to the original thread. Download link is still good. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16615634

Way to switch between 2g-3g-4g radios

Just in case someone who has this wonderful phone needs even better battery life try switching from 4g to 3g.
Here you are you may have to fiddle around with it to get it working I stick with the preloaded radio toggles,
CDMA auto PRL = 3G
EVDO Only = 1G or 2G network not certain.
And then of course your LTE/CDMA auto.
Good luck https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...Oqy5H3znZLfFLmawQ&sig2=B9QbzOsLdQ-UdV8KD_f-sQ
You can reach that menu by dialing *#*#4636*#*#.
Remember that if you force LTE only most carriers won't let you make/receive calls nor SMS
The app seems to make things easier, and I've tried on Verizon I have forced LTE and I can still make and receive calls, I've also forced 3g and I'm still able to makes and receive calls
Can someone help me understand how to use this app? The toggles sometimes work, but sometimes doesn't. I'm trying to use this on T-mobile and so I set it to either LTE /GSM or only GSM. I don't know how to get GPS set either. I think the MM update made the radio buggy... Any help or advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have only tested this on Verizon, so that may be an issue, yet when I first installed it I had a little trouble as well try switching between the mentioned toggles, and there is a setting that says select radio band try switching that, I hope this helps good luck
As regards to your GPS that should be in your settings app under location

I toggle the 'location' button but this app says the GPS is disconnected! And my maps churn when this happens. When it's says connected, it loads fine. But toggling that off and on doesn't always make the values change in this app. The information in this app seems more accurate then the phones stock settings.
