the volume keys doesnt work very well. But i think with a few updates will be better.
And about the other questions any idea?

BUMP.
And about the other questions any idea?

well for 2. I use spb backup
and for 3. I heard that IGo is a very good gps program but I'm not sure, I didnt try any gps program since so far

spb backup by default backs up everything in your home drive, including the windows folder, so if you change roms, you should not restore that backup, because it will combine 2 windows versions and make it unusable. therefor, instead of creating backups of the entire device including programs... you should rather use ms myphone or pimbackup to make backups of your important pim data and re-install programs after a hard reset or rom change using an auto-installer.
regarding free gps software, that's nearly impossible. you could use google maps, but it needs constant internet connection, which is not great for navigating in the car. most actual offline satnav programs like tomtom, navigon, igo, navngo are commercial, so either you'd have to pay for the program and the maps, or the program is free and the maps need to be purchased.
about your first question, camera zoom, you already got the answer scilors camera, which is one option, the other is, not to zoom at all, digital zoom does not actually make the picture bigger or better, it just cuts the borders and reduces the quality and resolution, so the same effect would be reached by taking the picture and zooming in afterwards.

Ok.Thanks for the answers.

Porting to new version of WM6 tommorow - questions

Hi,
I know this is early, but like most of you I'm burning to get the new ROM update tomorrow (kyphur you da man). So, of course I want to get all my ducks in a row so that tomorrow's update can be as painless and quick as possible.
The question I am asking with this thread pertains to backup. Changing from WM5 to WM6 was pain because I lost all my voice tags and sms's, mms's etc. It was a pain willingly carried because of the awesomeness of the new ROM, but one that I'd like to avoid this time round all the same.
Now, theoretically a WM6 backup should install without problems to a new WM6 install. However, there are indications that a different base ROM is to be used for WMXL 0.20. Will a simple backup work this time round?
Comments, thoughts, recommendations, more questions?
the short answer is no.
reason, you will overwrite all system files in the windows directory (which includes all the registry keys/values). Therefore you will run into problem.
Best thing to do is to reinstall all your apps, operator settings etc and sync your device to get your contacts, emails, tasks notes etc back on your wmxl0.2 install.
Cheers,

I think this is not entirely true. You could easily restore your contacts/mail/etc. Most system files will not be overwritten as they are in ROM. Just make sure you ain't restoring files mentioned before by jasjamming.
The tricky part is registry. What I'm going to do is making a diff file between the original registry and the one I have now. Then I'll simply apply changes. I know it may not work, but it's worth trying.
Hmm. That's unfortunate. The biggest problem for me is always the voice tags. They take ages to set up.
I've a problem too
Can WModem work in WM6? Since the ICS feature is not bluetooth ready yet even in WMXL 0.2... I miss such feature, as I can be using my notebook searching for answer first instead of asking directly via my Herems -> VNC -> Windows -> Firefox (where my forum password is saved)...

Is it Cyberon voice tag ? Google and get this utility to backup/restore voicetag database via activesync, but I haven't try it. (readme.txt attached)
http://translate.google.com/transla...h?q=vsddb&hl=en&rls=GGLJ,GGLJ:2007-03,GGLJ:en
Let me know the result if you gonna try it (if your's vc is cyberon ver1.2 and below)
Nope, don't mean VC. I'm talking about the contacts voice tags.
What I am doing is reloading the apps that are on today screen or that I leave in memory when switching the device off as they need to be in main memory or extended memory to avoid the card not present issue during power up and for the rest I go into HKCU and HKLM and selectively save the keys in the Software directory. This includes the shareware key for SW registration.
I am using vmenu and saving its related registry to access the other program straight from the card so I do not have to recreate shortcuts.
I save all the registery tweaks in individual file to apply them as needed.
Yeah, that's a bummer, but I have a feeling it'll be worth it!

I don't know these voice tags, but stupid question: would synchronizing with a PC not save all contact details, including these tags (if they are part of the contact's details)? If this is so, then you could easily restore them be synchronizing again, after the upgrade.
Cheers
Daniel
I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're talking about. AFIK Cyberon Voice Dialer is what uses those "Voice Tags". Without Cyberon there is no "Voice Tag" mechanism in WM.
This is why I personally prefer MS Voice Command or even Cyberon Voice Commander (both retail products), they are true voice recognition programs not voice tag comparison programs.

Another question re the upgrade to wm6 ... I am currently on Cingular's 2.06 ROM, and will go to XDA 0.2 as soon as I can. My 8525 is not super cid.
My question ... can someone give me perspective as to whether I should go to super cid before upgrading? I know I don't have to be super cid for the upgrade to work ... but is there a compelling reason why I might want to super cid my device? (I am not ever going to be a sophisticated ROM cooker ... rather someone who upgrades to ROMs cooked by other folks).
Not really.

Super CID will allow you to use Ext memory as storage memory which comes handy when you need to load all today's apps in memory to avoid the card power-up issue.
Opps, forgot about the Extended Rom. But then how many today plug-ins can one use?
Personally I always run my today plug-ins and MS Voice Command in main memory then everything else goes to the storage card.

Forget Voice Tags use MS Voice command 1.6...it's BRILLIANT. The leader earlier, was Fonix...Now MS has stepped up to the plate...and its a Home Run.
Trini
I agree MS VC is amazing...it works nearly every time. It is my primary control while driving.
Hi, I meant Cyberon. Guess I'll have to splash out for VC 1.6
To clear things up, there are three major "Voice" programs:
Microsoft Voice Command
Cyberon Voice Commander
Cyberon Voice Dialer
Cyberon Voice Dialer is the one that uses voice tags. BTW, it is the one usually embedded in Carrier Roms thus it is the only free (legally) one.
Cyberon Voice Commander has some functions that MS Voice Command doesn't (it can read full e-mails for example) but the "Say Command" prompt gets annoying after a while and it isn't as good at recgonition as the MS Product.
With v1.6 Microsoft has finally brought a complete product to the table. Unfortunately there are BT issues with our Hermes.

HD-worthy ebook reader

Hi there,
after some year or so of Windows-Mobile abstinence I am now the proud owner of a Touch HD. Since the device's gorgeous screen and (in my opinion) decent battery life make it an ideal platform for ebook reading, I'd like to ask if someone has already found some Touch-HD-like software. Key points are the absence of suitable hardware buttons for scrolling, so something with drag-'n-scroll or even sensor integration would be nice... Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot,
Abed
I use Mobipocket Reader
http://www.mobipocket.com/en/DownloadSoft/ProductDetailsReader.asp
Install on PC then convert PDF, Doc, ... and transfer to SD-card.
On the PocketPC you can turn pages by tapping on the screen
I agree with the above post... MobiReader works great for me... reading a David Webber book on mine now... Couple of tips... Go into the options and turn screen tap navigation on... tapping on the left side on the screen goes back... right side goes forward... I also use gsen to rotate screen automatically and actually hold the device upside down so I don't acccidently press one of the 4 home row keys.
Also Mobi has a fullscreen mode that removes top and bottom bars
AGREE !
Mobipocket is excellent. So much better than Microsoft Reader which since I dumped on my Tytn II I have not used on the HD.
But, I must admit to using my ebook - Iliad - more often than the HD for reading.
Find mobipocket here: www.mobipocket.com/en/DownloadSoft/application.asp?device=WindowsMobile
iSilo (www.isilo.com). I used it for years on the palmpilot and was very, VERY happy that they had a ppc version, too.
It's the only one which does fullscreen as it should (totally fullscreen, no toolbars or anything else), with correct screen or line scrolling (I use AEbutton to set volume up/down to screen up/down). No screwing around with virtual book pages or whatever...just text (and [embedded] pics) on screen (I mean, wtf, it's an Ebook, not a book...why even have pages!).

I use mobipocket which has full screen, but still show critical information all all time such as what time it is, my battery level, a percentage read, etc. Totally full screen is not necessary a good thing. I mean, who wants to get in and out all the time to find out if the bus shoud have arrive by this time, how close am to to finishing the book, etc?
That said, comparing software and improving on my choice of software is my hobby, so thank you for the lead.
If you really want all that info, just don't use isilo in fullscreen mode! And you can set it up however you like, anyway (with/without scrollbar, info bars etc). Personally, when I'm reading I'm reading, and the bus will come whenever it comes...and I'll finish the book whenever it's done...if I really want to know how far in I am, I'll check. So for me, true fullscreen is the best
Some kind of topscreen tap to show battery level when you're reading for a long time would be nice, I guess, but if I'm doing that, I'll probably hit the battery level warning anyway
i like word in mi computer and word mobile in my htc touch hd. i can move with my finger and i can edit text.
i don´t like pdf.
i like isilo and mobipocket because they have a good vision in htc touch hd.
You can remap volume buttons to up and down and use any e-reader
It might be worth having a look through
MoblieRead http://www.mobileread.com/forums/
Mobipocket gets my vote too....
Alreader !
Alreader is definately the best.

PDFs cannot be read by alreader. Use Adobe Reader 2.0
Or: Extract text out of PDF on your PC. Than read text with alreader.
One of the best imho is Alreader 2.3. It works very fine in full screen mode, tap on the right to switch to task bar mode, tap down or up to move one site ahead or back. Huge variety of settings - TOP 1 for me. No need to convert files..
I use "repligo 2" to read my ebooks on the Touch HD. On your PC you can change (via a printer driver) merely each format (pdf, doc, and, and, and) into the repligo format.
Unfortunately the development of repligo is stopped (formerly I could use my fingers to move text, now I have to use the volume buttons to go to the next site of the book) - but for my purpose repligo is a very comfortable prog to read ebooks: A full screen with adjustable fonts and sizes and no disturbing menues. Try it!
it depends on what format of ebook you'd prefer to read
i personally dont like using PDF because when it shrinks the whole page sometimes you cant read anything.
I vote for Mobipocket
most of my ebooks are on PRC format
My old reader was repligo... very nice and you can get a batch converter for pdf.
My new reference is mobipocketreader.
Pro:
:: it's free
:: fullscreen mode with progressbar
:: no problems with clearview (like repligo)
:: perfect reflow
:: hardware button support in fullscreenmode
:: you can change line height and font (I love Helvetica), of course also text size
:: and the best... a FREE converter for ALL important files (html, word, pdf....) with syncronisation when you connect the phone
:: it's a good newsreader too
contra
:: no batch converting of files
:: buggy hardwarebutton support on hd --> only forward, backward don't work
:: interface is very small --> not really touchfriendly

Microsoft Reader

Hello,
Is anyone else using Microsoft Reader? I can't get it installed properly. The installation and activation run through OK but the progrm does not appear in the "All programs" list. If I go to the Microsoft Reader directoy and click on MsReader.exe it runs fine, activated and everything....? Is there a way to create a "shorcut" for a file to point at from the "Programs" tab?
Grateful for any help.
Cheers/McHan
How strange
To manually make a shortcut: browse in file explorer to the msreader.exe file, long press, choose "copy", browse to my device\windows\start menu\ programs, long press or right soft button, choose "paste shortcut". If desired change name (long press on item)
Brilliant, worked like a charm. Could not get it to work in File Manager, but in Total Commander... Many thanks!/McHan
Hello, I've installed the latest version of the Microsoft Reader and the instalation was successful. But I have a different question. How do you page in it? There are no key arrrows, touch interface doesn't work and the areas on the display which function for paging (beside the page number) are too small to touch them comfortably. So far I've found following ways to use it, but I'm satisfied with neither:
- use stylus to touch the paging areas
- open the keyboard and use the arrow keys
- install the AEButtons application to remap the volume keys (in this case the the whole system became unstable and furthermore I was not able to read holding the device in the right hand
Thanks for any help
Hi,
I am a fan of ebooks and have used many ebook reader program on many pda devices. Just as you did, I also installed MS Reader and have some observations:
1. Ufortunately Ms Reader is basically designed for d-pad pda's. That is to say, it is impossible at this stage, for this version to change the page via touch or slide movement on the screen.
2. Other than that, MS reader installs a font called "wingdings" for itself, which conflicts with Advanced Config and HD Tweak. That's the reason you see awkward characters in these programs. With my TYTN II, I could delete or rename the name of this font and continue using both programs. However, it impossible to delete or rename this font even via Total Commander in Touch Pro 2. Because this file is accepted as a Rom file by the operationg system. Therefore I had to uninstall MS Reader.
3. I use MobiPocket for many ebooks; it has many good options; though I should say it needs upgrade too. Please look at this thread: http://www.mobipocket.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16032
4. I use a different program for lit files; but I can't remember it's name now since I broke the LCD of my screen and trying to repair it nowadays You can see it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=534883
5. Microsoft should develop a new MS Reader version or we should find a way to use cleartype in Adobe Acrobat somehow.

Yes, pretty much the ebook readers need a massive update.
One thread I found on the Microsoft Reader support site had one "semi-official" person saying they were working on a version for WinMob 6.1, but that was last year, and no further updates.
I found another thread that said that Microsoft had stopped support for Microsoft Reader.
So no idea what happens. I'm hoping hen WinMob 6.5 launches, there will be a proper touch-friendly ebook reader in the store, that can handle .lit files as well =)
eReader
eReader (fictionwise/barnesandnoble) is pretty sweet for commercial titles. And for non-commercial titles, manybooks.net brings gutenburg to the eReader format (as well as many others) without you having to do any conversion yourself.
I haven't used the winmo version yet (which allows you to purchase/dl books directly btw), but the old Palm version uses the dpad And the touchscreen for page turning, so I imagine it would use the touchscreen for the better supported winmo version as well.
If I had a library of .lit books myself, I'd consider converting it to something more universal.
Microsoft Reader now for WM 6.1
A couple of weeks ago Microsoft quietly introduced a new version of Microsoft Reader that finally works fully on WM 6.1. Long overdue.
Does this mean that they still see Reader as a viable product, and that it could be developed further in a growing and ever-evolving ebook marketplace?

Thanks for the news; however MS Reader still sucks; I have set up and used the program for trial with many of my .lit files; but I came across some annoying features:
1. The program installs a font called wingdings.ttf for its viewing purposes; the problem is this font interferes with many programs including Advanced Config and Manila 2.5! In the previous version it was possible to rename and disable this file in Total Commander; however it seems as a ROM file now and it's possible to get rid of this nonsense font.
2. It's still very hard to turn page in devices like Rhodium, where you do not have the D-pad.
3. The funny thing is, there was an common bug preventing the opening of .lit files inside File Explorer; we could get rid of it with a small registry trick. You can see this bug here: http://forum.soft32.com/pda/open-reader-files-WM5-file-explorer-ftopict66047.html
The funny thing is that silly bug is still there LOL after all these years. I think Steve Ballmer needed to fire some more crew
Therefore I have uninstalled the program again.

Great app
yep !!! the best so far
mhhh the beta 6 was better, when i load a picture, i must waiting to see the next picture, its verry buggy on my 6.5
When selecting files and using the action to email. Is there a way to specify which email account that is used to send? Everytime I try to email a file it opens the email program and attaches the files but it defaults to an email account that I do not want to use and I cannot figure out how to change it.
Any suggestions?
I loved the beta because it was fast on my previous phone, but on the HD2 it doesn't use multitouch
Since the Pinch&Zoom messages are known, it would be lovely to enable this on Photo Manager. Multitouch rotation would be nice as well

Let me guess, a phone with the Widcomm Bluetooth stack.. Like the Touch Pro 2.
As for me, this program worked great last night, but I went to load it today to look up where a conference room was at work and it went SLOW AS BALLS. I eventually just killed it and launched 6.33. Sigh..
Very good app! Only issue I have: I can't change the home background. I receive the message that the home background was changed but actually nothing has happened. I still see the old one. I can change the background with the WM standard picture viewer so I doubt it's an issue with my system settings. I'm using HTC Touch Diamond 2 with a custom 6.5.3 ROM.
Its a new version 7.02 out, multitouch support!!!!allready purchased for my hd2!! The best app so far

Tilt2 ROM vs TP2 ROM with iGO8

Hi guys. Got a strange problem when trying to run iGO8 with my Tilt 2. I was always having problems with getting the Text to speach to work on with the HQ US voices (Susan v1.84 for example). After much testing, I figured it was the amount of free ram so I loaded up mort scripts and created a routine that would unload TF3D, clean the ram, and load up iGO. This work some of the times but other times it would not. A reboot would help but not always.
I finally got around to doing the hardspl and loaded up some of the posted ROMs on the forum. What is interesting is that any rom based on the TP2 worked fine, TTS worked without having to unload TF/Sense. But when i use a ROM meant for a Tilt2, same problem as my OEM RAM no matter how stripped down.
What could be the key difference? I tried rebuilding iGO from scratch based on other peoples post but no dice. What is interesting is that iGO seems to know which phone it is loaded in. WHen i am running a Tilt2 rom, the volume hard buttons are supported by iGO so pressing them actually changes the volume of iGO itself. But when I press them in a TP2 ROM, iGO ignores it and it changes the volume of the phone itself.
Thanks
Ernie
I'm having the same problem any help would be appreciated.
sorry, not meaning to hijack your thread, but what skin are you using for igo on your device. I'm trying to run it off the storage card which i used for my previous device, tilt, and at first it ran but wasn't utilizing the entire screen, so i downloaded a wvga skin from some site and now it won't even start, just keeps crashing on the boot up screen
check your data.zip file...
_ww.tomsoftware.net/default.aspx?pg=a97e138a-5d21-4468-a879-5d968a048707
Check out Tom's skin, really nice actually. But there is a trick it uses in that it has to uses the 400x240 vga skin version. Not sure exactly why it has to be this way (half the resolution and all) but it works. Also, if you are using above a certain version (his site explains), you have to rename the folder ui_igo8 to ui_igo8_da in the skin.
It seems to be running a little better now that I have done rebuilt my igo setup on the SD card from scratch. Still have to unload Sense but at least the voice is working - for now. Only thing I can think of is that volume control is somehow interferring with the TTS in memory.
Strange...
Ernie
Well, I might have solved the problem but I wont know for sure until I have used it a little more. I updated my iGO exe to version 8.3.4.117940 (Nov 3 2009). The TTS seems to work without have to unload Sense (using eras2r's great ROM which aimed at the Tilt2). I have EVERYTHING running including sense, push email with Exchange Server, POP email, Weather, programs, etc. I am also running the skin I referenced above so everything is as max out as possible in terms of resources.
