[DISCUSSION][SOLVED] ROOTING G2 Vision T-mobile - G2 and Desire Z Android Development

What is this thread?
This is where steps will be tried to get root on the device
What should be posted?
Steps to try, steps tried and failed, steps that worked
What should not be posted in this thread?
If your post doesn't have anything to do with root then you may ask in general, we will not help get adb set up or anything else, there are thousands of threads all over the interwebs that tell you how to get adb working and this will not be one of them.
So now that we have devices in hand and we have a few devs on-hand as well we can really get into this.
I will update this post later with tried methods and failed(and why) but for now we have some simple rules.
If you want to test, fine but share any and all details
We do not have someone in charge of root as several that are working don't have devices(myself included) and so we may just post steps, if you try the steps be sure to quote the steps tried and post results of each step(errors especially)
Once root is achieved provide pics and what you did so we can replicate and verify
Anything done on the phone is YOUR fault if you think that what you are trying could cause issues and you are uncomfortable doing the steps provided then stop and ask questions.
Standard disclaimers apply, if your phone is broke then fix it, we will try to be helpful if it was caused by our steps but the end result is if you brick it then it's your fault and we will note it as a step not to try again.
Hope this is helpful the rest will be updated below this later when I have computer to work at

Yea I preordered mines so it should be n by the oct 6 day(my brithday )
But yea I want root asap once I get the phone ill be up to trying a few things to help out.
What's mainly needed? A system, boot, and recovery dump?

what about unrevoked universal root method?

Give me some clockwork. I want the process to be easy like it is for the Vibrant. **** only took 2 seconds to root.

If I do acquire one.. how can I be of help?

The slides method should work. It works on all newer htc android models so far. we'll just have to wait and see really.

The thing about that is that I own only Macs. Doesn't adb, and odin only work with pc?
I know we won't really see clockwork on the G2, I'm just wishing here. lol
Either way, I just want this to be easy.

odin was for vibrant, adb will run on any OS so long as you know how(put ./ in front and run the command or just make sure that the adb binary is in your path) i plan on trying the adb method tonight, just need a build with root to test with

Hopefully I will be able to test this theory out tomorrow when I receive my device

The divice in my hand has recovery 3e which means the adb method may not work, we'll have to try a few things, won't have the G2 near a comp for another 8 hours from now

When it arrives, get into bootloader by holding volume down, then hit recovery, volume up+power makes text menu appear in recovery

Hey man, thanks for being so helpful, and willing to answer questions. I'm kinda new at all this, so I know who I'll be following around here in G2 world.

Well I only get the phone for 1 day but I will be as helpful as I can be with the phone, and I'll have one at work to toy with. Right now I am trying to get used to the keyboard and how it's set up
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App

how do the short cut keys work? programmed? and what can they be programmed to do?

I've got one in hand with adb access but no root. Unless I'm doing it wrong, UniversalAndRoot, Unrevoked, and "fastboot oem unlock" all don't work. Other ideas?

[Q] How do I reset my G2 to stock?

Just like the title says, I'd like to unroot and go back to factory defaults like it was fresh out of the box. I've already messed up quite a few things on it and would just like to start over ~_~

No but seriously **** munch, I was hoping for some details in what order I would need to do everything seeing as how there are some warnings on downgrading straight to stock. Thanks for your next-to-useless advice though.

sadly i did not, I was messing with overclocking and somehow messed up some permissions and i'm kinda stuck in a loop. Not sure how to enable read/write to my system while in a root explorer and adb is just giving me some weird message about color being incorrect when I try to access system... bleh, could always be worse, at least i'm not bricked yet right? heh

I tried that once with my old G1 and I've had mixed experiences, sometimes I would get MD5 checks that didn't match up and once actually backed up my step fathers G1 while rooting his and ended up accidentally loading it up on mine.
Worth a shot I guess.
you can use someone else's backup, but the unroot threads all tell you the order in which you need to do things, without searching and reading you will never do anything on your own which is ridiculous. there are a few different threads that tell you how to unroot your phone if you just read everything through it will all make sense

He did a little too much tweaking and has it phone hosed up.
Best of luck to him. I am sure he will now do a back up before messing with things. I have opted to do that every time now with Rom Manager. Its nice to be able to revert quickly.
I did the CM 6.1 RC1 but GPS and battery life not so good. Luckily I had a Backup that I was able to restore days later. With the assistance of Titanium I get everything else set up. Email is no big deal as I have exchange and Gmail.
Please see this thread. I had used this to reset my G2 back to stock and then went ahead and rooted it with rage.

Many can, but for best purposes, why? You can have a lovely rooted, stock version that I believe they just updated. Otherwise look at qbking's vidoes on Odin/Heimdall to stock. No real reason to, unless you plan to sell or repair it.
When was this update?
And lately i havent been receiving any texts and was worried that it may have something to do with being rooted? idk..
and i know nothing about rooting/unrooting so when the day comes and i have to use my warrenty, id like to know how to unroot it.

Check the dev section, but not receiving texts may be an issue way easier than going back to stock. Also, be sure to state anything you've played with that makes you think it could be attached to s/u status. Lots of people will be happy to walk you through a variety of things that won't make you lose all your data.
honestly i love the whole rooted idea. I rooted my phone to use a screenshot app..but i feel like i can do more with it...the thing is..idk how. I wish i can get themes on my phone but everything seems so complicated. I probably wont unroot now...but since we're both here, any ideas on how to add themes to my phone? and maybe even reset to the default theme.

Did you flash a Rom after you rooted? What instructions did you go by? Be aware, it's 12:33 here and your questions may get differred to everyone else until morning. If you're on certain main Roms, you might be able to easily flash to either a new Rom or theme with little effort. This is where it can get tricky though and retracing your steps out loud will help people walk you to what you need until you get more acclimated to searching and "shopping" for what you what in here. remember your thanks, donations and verbal support, people like to help here

Nothing is complicated about putting ROMs or Themes on your phone Its developing them that is Complicated!
Follow the link in my sig to qbkings videos and you will be wondering why you thought it was complicated to begin with!

As long as you have a backup of your data on your card, your phone will live on as it did when you last clicked the wrong button. Bricking is everyone's biggest fear, but mostly because it's an inconvenience not a sentence.

The Root is right. The word "brick" is used too much. I can only remember a couple of people actually bricking a phone thus making it useless. 95% of the problems can be fixed with Odin. I didn't know a damn thing 6 months ago. I had to Google "rooting your phone." Now I test ROMs,themes, and kernels for developers. I could never go back to stock now. Rooting really frees the phone to make it your own. Flashing ROM's, themes, and kernels is easy and if you have any questions, there are people like me that are glad to help. Also, qbking makes great videos if you are a visual learner or want to see the process before you do it.

ROOT S720C (Samsung Proclaim straight talk)

Anyone got a root going for the new straight talk (verizon) Samsung Proclaim S720C ?
This will be great for me an affordable phone on straight talk with verizon coverage all I need is root
Has anyone tried the one clikc root fo this phone? I havnt been active on the site for close to 2 years so did some back reading and have seen stuff on the one clikc root but hate to be the first to try it as im not the most tech savy here
Im wanting this phone too! Im just trying to find official word if its verizon. Im sure theres a root for the phone somewhere its an old droid.
It is Verizon for sure I got my daughter one and my father one as well since verizon is the only carrier who gets service where my father lives except US cellular. The phone works great.
In the rural area we are in you have slim pickings as to what carrier has good service in certain areas.
Verizon has great coverage in this area but their contract phones are a bit pricey for my father and daughter's usage. But to get Verizon coverage on an android pre paid with straight talk is just a win/win for me. The only thing is that I really would like to root these phones so that they can use wifi tehtering in a pinch.
Its not going to be very often but sure is handy when you need it.
at the moment I have them set up for USB tethered sharing for internet when they have to have it mobile.
Id be willing to donate if someone takes up the challenge of rooting the Proclaim/illusion
I'm not currently a developer, but between the Proclaim and the Illusion I would think there's enough of an audience to develop something for these phones. The user group should be rather large.
I got it! But I hope we can get a trusted root. I'm afraid the straight talk software will go buggy if I root it. And I want to go over to ice cream.
I got one too - the proclaim and looking for a root. Please help XDA developers!

Figured out how to get the MSL code!
So after spending too much time at this I happened over an interesting method.. and that was to simply use the free LauncherPro and create a shortcut on the main screen for com.android.hiddenmenu.advanced. You simply install LauncherPro and hold down on the main screen to create a shortcut then go into Activities and scroll down to com.android.hiddenmenu and there are a ton of options there. A lot of them will not actually open up even when you try this method but advanced will open and ask for a SPC code and when it fails aLogCat will log the correct code!!
So to sum it up
1. Download LauncherPro
2. Download alogcat & use msl filter
3. Create a shortcut/activities
4. com.android.hiddenmenu.advanced
5. open the shortcut and type in a bad SPC
6. Success you have now logged your SPC in alogcat.
Nm.. I went ahead and took a look but it does not appear like the hiddenmenu contains any references to the "secret code(s)" and I know creating a shortcut to ETS Channel fails.. so maybe it is the hiddenmenu.apk? Otherwise I am not sure how to fix it if the phone is lacking in some way.

[Q] 3G Data and signal help

Guys,
This might be a longshot, but I'm hoping someone might be able to give some advice.
I have the Epic 4G tough and had it flashed over to straight talk. At first it worked good(since Dec), but the 3G data speeds were never really there. Was getting a max of around 200-250k/sec, but things were pretty solid. Others around here with ST and flashed ST phones have been able to get 1.5+ Mb/sec speeds.
Did have a problem with the signal just disappearing and then coming back a few seconds later, even while in an area where I had 4+ bars. Just Poof, gone and then it would come back.
The phone did an OTA update a month or so ago and things were still working the same. I think a couple of ther updates might have happened in the past week because I heard my phone reboot a couple of times for no reason that I can find.
For about the past week though things have went all to crap on it.When 3G does connect I'm luckt to get 16k/sec. Still works great over wifi.
Here is my baseband version:
S710.10 S.FL24
Android version 4.04.
Does anyone have any advice that might help me out?
Thanks in advance.
I'm assuming that since you flashed over to ST that you are rooted? If so, have you updated your modem, prl, profile? There is also a thread on here where you can change your 3g settings using your MSL code, that may help you. From what I've read, sometimes OTA will jack with the 3g signal. Try those things and see if that held. You may have to flash different modems depending on where you live to find the best one. You're running ICS, I'd start in rwilco12's repository and flash the latest ICS modem, update prl and profile, and see if that helps. Good luck! Hope it works out

Unfortunately I had the phone remotely flashed by flashedphones.net and it isn't rooted.
It does have the newest ST PRL on it.
Could you possibly post a link for the MSL thread?
Looking over the repository and reading the thread about it, I see mention that there are ODIN 1 click modem files and someone mentioned that these will root the phone as well. Does anyone know if this is correct? If so that would be a great added bonus for me.
I think I can still flash a modem to the phone through ODIN even if it is not rooted?
Thanks!
Yes, you should be able to flash a modem without rooting using odin. If you can boot into download mode, Odin should flash just fine. However, in order to change 3g settings, you need to be rooted. You have to use terminal emulator(on the linked guide, there may be other ways) which requires rooting to have full control.

First thing you'll want to look for is making a nandroid backup. The saying goes "if flashing breaks it, a backup should restore it".
You'll specifically want to look for recording your mms/mmsc/apn settings. Basically anything carrier specific settings that you can edit via the ##data# menu. Make sure you write them down and that way you won't have to hunt for them.
You'll need to know what your msl is as well. There are threads to help you get that.
When it comes to flashed over carrier devices, mms usually breaks and has to be edited for settings.
Check out threads that deal with, for example, Boost flashes and check their issues and expect the same to happen and you'll need to fix.

That's the first thing you do after rooting with a custom recovery.
One step at a time. Do your research, read and ask questions and you'll be good to go.
Tip, use Google to search the forum, the forum search can be confusing at best.

Grrr,Pancho you're too da*n fast for me! I actually knew the answer to that one. Throw a brother a bone will ya? Ha. On a serious note, Pancho is right. If you don't know what nandroid is, you're not ready to root. But once you do, you'll have the ability to flash a custom recovery that basically allows you to make a mirror copy of the current ROM you have. That way, if you mess things up, you can always reflash the custom recovery cwm, restore the ROM, and start over. Read, read, read. The folks here have encountered and answered about every type of issue.

Just had someone local take a good look at my phone.
Looks like it was a bad flash from the start.
Another flashedphones.net victim.
They want me to send it in to them so they can "fix" it.
The hell with that. I'll eat the money and get it fixed locally so that I have someone who actually knows what they are doing.

Hmmm, that sucks. Well, if you are the least bit comfortable with doing it yourself, you can guaranteed find something to help you on here. The instructions are on here, just read, read, read, and ask the right questions. Good luck!

Thanks man.
Luckily this local guy is pretty good. I'm pretty sure he will let me watch so I might learn some things. Not interested in doint other peoples phones, but would like to learn so I can do my own stuff.
As far as flashing ROM's/ modems I'm comfortable with that. Just need more experience with the changing over to other services on them.
But hey, at least I have a pretty decent JB rooted rom on it now.
Has anyone played around with the radios and seen which ones seem to be pretty good in weak signal areas?

That you do(have a good jb rom, if you have jellyverse that is ). I'm using GB27 modem on mine. Works fine, but no modem I have will get goods signal in my office. Awesome that you'll get to watch live and in color. Let me know how it goes and if you need anything else. I may not know the answer, but can certainly find it or reach out to someone who does know. Enjoy your weekend

I assume if you googled it, you would at least know how to root. As far as dead links well that's a different story...which links were you referring to?

Our epic is the d700. Yours is the d710. Check out there foruma for root. And don't use our files, you'll brick your device.

I am currently running the Note 3 and have been rooting and flashing since the S2 epic 4g touch. I just dusted off my old epic 4g and rooted it with the fc09 stock rooted rom, and activated sprint for my brother. I didn't have any issues until after flashing. When I go into recovery now, nothing will mount, so I am unable to perform any actions in cwm. The stock rooted rom runs fine. I haven't ever had this happen before. Does anyone know of a solution? I even installed a 16 GB SD card that I had from my S2, and still get the errors in cwm.
