Not every micro usb cord is built the same... - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ive been using my OEM charger cord untill the other day it fell off my desk while charging and bent the tip. I started using another cheap 99 cent ebay cord with a blackberry logo on it and it seems like my phones never charged slower. So I installed current widget and it seems to be charging at 280MA while the OEM cord charges at 380MA. Does anyone know where I can get a new cord that charges just as good as the OEM one for cheap?

Amazon has the HTC cord identical to the one that comes with the phone for like $6. My phone charges at around 800ma with the screen off. I suggest spending the extra $5.

FWIW, it might be worth mentioning that your battery will actually last longer if you charge it with lower amperage. The downside to this, is that it will also take longer to charge.
In fact, your battery's overall life expectancy will also be longer using lower amperage charging.
Just thought I'd mention it.

I use monoprice cables. Seems to work fine, although, I never tested charge speed.

did you guys get the USB charge cable with your EVO? I never got one. All I have is AC charge cable, and using my wife's moment USB Charge Cable, and works fine.

Typical Micro USB cables (like those from monoprice.com, awesome btw) don't charge my for-work Blackberry Curve.
Go figure. I hate Blackberries.

Correct me if I'm wrong but that micro usb cable that came with your evo can be plugged into a usb port or the wall charger itself, and it can even be plugged into a car charger hat accepts usb cables.

I'm doing this now, charging my phone from my car charger that accepts USB cables. It charges REALLY slow however, I'll check to see at what amperage.

Usb charger exploit?

I bought a battery with charger off ebay. It shipped from china, the battery charger works great and the batteries that I got perform well. My issue is the charger has a usb port on the bottom and when I plug my phone in it thinks I am connected to a computer. Could there possibly be malicious code trying to invade my phone?

I've heard it has something to do with the number of pins on the thing you plug into. Same thing happens to me when I plug into my car.
No need to worry about anything, though.
The cable that came with my Nexus One is now doing this. It worked fine at first with my Inc but not it does nothing but charge. Wont let me transfer anything from my comp.
Thanks guys. I read something about some energizer charger having a trojan so I thought I would ask the experts. Weird thing that happens is if it is charging a battery and I plug my phone into the usb port on it the screen goes completely unresponsive until I unplug. Guess I can't expect too much when I get a charger and two 1500mah batteries from china for $9.99 on ebay.

Thanks a lot.
ANY charger that puts out 1000mA will work with it. Motorola makes "travel" wall chargers that sometimes go on sale for a buck, and have the plug folding into them so it takes less space in a bag. As long as it has a micro-USB plug or takes your USB cable, it will work, does not have to be specific for the phone.
The whole idea of microUSB chargers is part of a larger EU plan to allow for standard chargers with microUSB tips, so you can replace your cell phone but "never" have to replace the wall wart for it.
Just check the power output, most of the Motorola chargers put out 1000mA now because some phones with big batteries (like the Atrix) can use that power to charger quickly. Lower power rating, longer charge times.
You read my mind,
It was just the info I wanted to know.
Thanks.
Bear in mind though, not all micro usb chargers work on atrix. I have a few that dont work but work fine on my other stuff. Im not sure why though. I have an external battery that worked with my nexus one but not my atrix.
I voided my warranty.

The one that comes with the phone in the US is 800ma actually. But as you said, 1000ma would charge it faster.
My atrix charger died so I'm currently using a blackberry charger with 750ma output. The iphone charger works too but it's a slower charge.
Whaddayaknow. The one supplied with my phone says 850mA, the one supplied with my bt earbud is 1000mA. Maybe someone at Motorola is paying attention to profits.<G>
But this is all part of why he industry is moving to standard chargers and why "all" standard chargers should work with standard phones. If a charger doesn't work with this phone, odds are it is too low power or simply a cheap piece of Chinese quality control which has one or more broken contacts in it.
I've gotten USB cables that have the same problem, charge or data not both. that isn't by design but at least one of the four wires in them was broken. Cheap cables is cheap cables--and I've seen cheap cables shipped as OEM from brand names.
Like cables from WD and possibly Moto that have the USB log on the wrong side of the plug--which means they are not entitled to use the logo at all, and the maker does not understand the USB spec.
If you live near a hotel, walk in and say that you left your phone charger in one of the rooms. They usually have boxes of forgotten chargers.
Thanks all for your help.
I started using lg micro USB charger which gives 700 ma.
Will get original one as well.

Car charger that charges at wall charger speeds?

Any car chargers that anyone could point me to that charges as fast as a wall charger?
As it is right now, unless I have my screen off and no apps running it drains faster than the charger can put juice into it...
I'm just using an el-cheap-o aftermarket car charger.
Thanks!

What I use is a cig to usb plug (cost me 10 bucks at walmart). Then I bring the cord from home that came with my phone and plug that into the USB to cig thingy. Works like a charm, I haven't noticed it charging slower than when at home.

All I know is that now I can run my GPS with the screen on and still move UP in battery - before it would drain faster than the car charger would charge, so, I'm happy with what I have now.
Actually the problem is that some of the car chargers are not at 1amp output but less .75 or .85. Thats why your not really seeing an increase. The stock charger is at 1amp. I know AllGamer likes to use the Blackberry ones (which i believe are 1.5amps) Correct me if im wrong AllGamer.
So just look for 1 amp car chargers the cable doesnt matter itll hold whatever you attach it to.
So, no matter wht brand charger you have as long as you connect the two middle pins you will get full charge as long as the charger can put out 1000ma?
I really need a good charger for the car, right now i use a blackberry charger at work an it charges pretty fast. But i need to know how do i find the currect charge rate of a charger. Is there an app for that?

Does anyone have an experience with this charger from MONOPRICE

I need a great car charger and really dont want to spend to much money on it. Furthermore, if I am getting a 1+amp charger, as long as i am using the stock samsung charging cable then it shouldnt matter if the charger itself has D- and D+ shorted right?
Im assuming this is something standard on all usb CHARGING cables as appose to data cables.?

You want a good reliable charger at eBay pricing..... spend the money 1 time and be done with it. You could've already gotten the T-Mobile one and been done with it.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2 Beta-5
For those of you buying the USB 12V Cigarette adapters read this.
Basically if you use a data sync cord with one of those adapters, unless it shorts the 2 data pins together internally (probably not) the phone is going to think it's plugged into a computer and only charge at 500ma (max output for a computer USB port). The write up above explains to short the 2 data cables together (this is done internally with the main AC charger head) back towards the phone so it will charge at 1amp instead of 500ma.
You can buy this cable and just modify it as described. I bought this USB adapter so I could charge 2 things at once.
Let me get this clear.
All i need to look for when it is charging is AC mode. As long as it says that, it doesnt matter what i have or have not done to the cables, AC mode is AC mode.
The charger i am looking at getting is 2.1 amp (because it has a spare usb port...so 1amp per line) and when i plug it in and it says AC MODE then its good to go right.
I just bought a TMOBILE offical charger that shows AC MODE, so when it MONOPRICE charger arrives i can compare. If it doesnt work its another 5 bucks, if it does i can take the tmo one back.
But again i am just wondering are there any caveats to AC MODE, or is it that once AC mode shows that is all that matters.

Reliable long USB cable?

I just ordered a couple of 10 feet USB cable on ebay from China. I plugged it in and right away the charge indicator shows up with the charge chime. The tablet looks to be charging. An hour later, the tablet stayed at the same battery percentage. The cable doesn't charge. I used a 4.5ft USB extension with stock USB cable and charger but with the same result. The USB extension doesn't charge either. Where can I buy a USB cable that can charge the tablet that's at least 6ft long?
I use a 9 ft extension cable and it charges without any problems. Make sure the extension cable is of good quality.

Volt drop in a thin cable can be an issue with cheap cables. Also interconnects add resistance so your unit is likely not seeing the 5Vdc that the charger is supposed to supply. Also make sure your charger is the 2. 1A variety as you will never get proper charge. On top of that longer cable means that the charger has to work harder. So if it's a bit flakes you won't get fill charge.

I just tried a usb extension cable that I had and it worked I.e. usb to female input, connected one end to the mains charger and plugged the usb sync and charge cable on the other and connected. My note now charges with a nice long cable.
An added benefit achieved with this extension cable is that when it is connected to the usb adapter for the note, different things like usb drives and hardware keyboards etc can also be used
I ordered one, from Amazon. Its a 6ft. Cable I believe. It does work and charge my note 10.1. But I swear it seems like it charges at a way slower rate. It took forever to charge. I took it off and put back on stock cable. Then it started charging alot faster. Even while using tablet while plugged in. I will test it out again later but I'm sure its charging at a slower rate compared to stock cable. And I think the newer longer cable I have is a Samsung approved one also.

If you are trying to charge from a USB port built in to your car, you are only going to get a 500mA current which isn't enough to charge your phone if you're using navigation or anything.
For a charger that will work well in the car, look at the Anker PowerIQ charger.

Both ports will charge Android devices or iPhones at the full rate.

It varies dramatically from car to car, even from year to year. Generally, if it doesn't look like it's charging much, if at all, it's because it's not putting out enough amps, period.

How have you determined that it is the cable and not the charger? It is much more likely that a charger would be defective than a cable.

because I had an OEM cable working fine in the charger, but the tiny clips at the end got bent down and now it doesn't stay seated properly in the charging port, so I tried a couple of places (Amazon, Monoprice) to get a replacement OEM charging cable - I have a dual port charger and have tried both ports with the replacement cables. They appear to charge (battery icon spins, using Mahdi Rom) my phone but when I get home the battery level is lower than when I plugged it into the car. Hence my quest to find an OEM charging cable, with the proper tiny clips so it stays properly seated, that I can use in the car. Monoprice cable fits nicely in the charging port, but doesn't seem to charge the phone. Not sure if there are data-only cables made but these were advertised as charging/sync cables...
Well, Monoprice has a lifetime guarantee so if you received defective cables they will replace them. I use both the Monoprice Premium cable and the standard cable and have no issue with any charger.

The only issue I run into is that one of my chargers is an iPhone charger and thus shows as "Charging (USB)" when you go to the Battery menu. That means they will only charge at 500mA which is not enough power to keep the phone running as a GPS. This Anker PowerIQ charger plus either of the Monoprice cables charges my phone without any issue (displays "Charging (AC)") while using the phone as a GPS.
http://www.amazon.com/Anker®-Dual-P...&qid=1397483180&sr=8-6&keywords=anker+poweriq
Edit: Also, when you say "OEM cable" do you mean the one that came with your Nexus 5 or the cable that came with your charger (since both are provided by the manufacturer of the equipment)? If it's the one that came with your Nexus 5 it is probably just that you received a defective cable since the Nexus 5 cable is a standard sync + charge cable. If it came with your charger it may be that your charger uses the iPhone spec and needs a charge only cable to properly charge an Android phone.

I chatted with monoprice and after I sent them a link to the car charger I'm using, they found it has both a 2.4 amp and a 1 amp slot. Said to try the 2.4 amp slot and see if that helps. I'll report back...

The 2.4A slot is designed using the Apple spec and won't charge the Nexus 5 properly. Once you plug it in check under the Battery menu. If you see "Charging (USB)" then it is capping at 500mA.

Actually it does charge the phone quite nicely with the monoprice cable. Maybe problem solved. It shows charging ac. I'll let it run for a few days and see how it is.
