Evo from hell???? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It always seems like there's something wrong with my evo. This morning I went to pick up my evo after it was plugged in all night (like i do every night) and it was burning hot. I looked at it and it said it was 133 degrees so i unplugged it and turned it off immediately, after it cooled down I turned it back on and it was at 70% battery after it was charging all night, so it wasn't charging at all last night even though the light was on and it was showing a green full charge when I woke up. after I turned it on it was on for about 2 minutes then automatically rebooted and then was on for another 3 min and rebooted again for no reason. my phone reboots randomly alot. this happens to me a few times a day usually 2 or 3 times. sometimes while im doing something important and sometimes when the evo is int even being used.
Does anyone have any idea what my problem might be?
My evo setup is fresh 3.3, no custom kernel. ebay 3000mah battery no case or anything like that for overheating. ive been running this setup for months (just with lower fresh builds) and have random reboots. This is the first overheating issue. The only thing thats changed is I started using a .99 ebay blackberry micro usb but ive been using that for a week and never had a charging issue. my hw v is 3

I'm thinking that maybe the battery has an issue. Have you tried with the old battery? As far as the other problems that you have, it does not look good. Try reflashing, if it does not fix it then it is likely that you need your phone replaced.

Im not sure because Ive been using this battery a long time with no problem, even now I plugged in the phone and its charging fine with no problems. If it does this again tonight maybe its the battery, I was thinking maybe it was something to do with that battery being plugged in to long.

I would say it's your aftermarket battery or BB charger. Try and use the OEM accessories.

As I said before, try reflashing the ROM and see how it behaves. If the problem is still there AFTER a clean install then it is hardware related, if not then, well keep the ROM

Ahh lol welcome onboard! Yes I believe it's probably the charger and not the battery. $0.99? Great deal, but be careful.

I got the same over heating issue on the stock battery a day ago. It was burning hot when I woke up, and took out the battery with the ac on blast for a minute. It wasnt plugged in, so I was surprised it happened while on the stock battery. Went to my 3000mah battery from ebay, that I have never had any problems at all with.
I was running cm6 with stock kernel. Im guessing it was a freak accident, since no reboots or any after effect from the heat.
On the positive side, I was able to push down the screen due to the heat and fix my light leakage problem

That is precisely why you need to reflash so you can know for sure if it is a problem with the device itself or just a software glitch.

See if you have too many rotation options checked in cm settings. That made mine reboot a lot. Now just have 90 and no more issues...

I dont use CM I use fresh

The only external item left is the sdcard. Try another. If it still reboots, then return it for service/replacement. The low battery and heat and reboot can all be caused by a large amp draw. Install alogcat from market and look for messages indicating why. You could also use quicksysteminfo from market, and look at the dmsg's.

I have had a similar problem with my girlfriends Evo. Random reboots until it got to the point where it was just stuck rebooting. After reading this thread, I recognize battery heating as a symptom as well. I ended sending it in to HTC for warranty repair. It turned out to be a bad chip of some type. Having seen a number of threads regarding random rebooting, I wonder if there might not be a defective series of these chips. At any rate, the warranty process was quick and easy. No problems since I got the phone back. This was also an unrooted phone, so I think your ROMs are probably working correctly and it is more hardware issue.

judging by all my problems id have to say its a hardware issue, my phone seems like its always at 100% cpu and its awake time is always the same as its uptime and i only get about a 4 hour battery life

you need to reflash bad.
There is nothing hardware related that is going to run you 100 cpu all the time.

Phone won't charge unless I don't touch phone

Lately my phone drains even while on the charger. I basically can't use it while charging or it won't go past the percentage its at, sometimes. Its driving me crazy anyone else experiencing this or have. Any tips?

I've been having the same problem for two weeks now. I thought it might be the charger so I bought a new one. It wasn't. Sometimes it will chargw normal but most of the time it just stays at the aame percentage if I'm using it while charging and it seems to get really hot. What rom/kernel you running?

Just got my S3 last week so not super familiar with it yet but just a couple of practical things to try. First switch out the cord and the charger, if that doesn't do anything and you have an extra battery or can borrow someone's see if that makes a difference. Also are you rooted, what ROM, and how long have you been on that ROM. My guess is those its not root or ROM related at all. Either the battery is going or the charger or cord isn't supplying the right voltage somehow. The only other possibility is that it is charging and its not registering. If you are rooted with TWP recovery it will show your batt percentage in recovery. Reboot to recovery and see if it matches up with what your seeing on your phone.
The charger and brick charges my gnex fine. I've used multiple ROMs to see if its a ROM issue. I've used darthstarker, synergy, root box, liquid smooth, and now I'm on deviant xone. Tried different kernels as well. I have ordered a couple zero lemons.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
try a different battery, and also try going into recovery if you have twp and see if the percentages match up. You could also download battstat and wipe the current stat just to try it because you never know lol.
It's more likely a software issue than hardware.
As in, let's see some battery stats.

Only reason I was thinking hardware is if he has flashes multiple roms and kernels and the problem is still there I doubt it's software, but that was my initial thought also. Just figured if he can try a different battery that for sure says it's in the phone.
It happens to me when I first got the phone. Then I realized the phone is really picky about the the cable and the charger you use. Using everything stock will guarantee you a quick charge. I use a 2 Amp brick and OEM SamSung cable and it charges just fine. Using USB extension cord might slow down your charging also. So maybe just play around with your brick and cable a bit and see if it fixes your problem.

At first, I thought the same thing. But when you flash multiple roms, do your apps change? I know mine don't. I use the same apps regardless of rom. We can't know anything without more information, just putting out there what I consider to be another valid point of view.
Here's a shot of my battery notice its on the charger and decreasing? I'll post a battery log later when it dies

This phone is very quirky, completely stock sometimes it decides to charge quickly other times it takes way longer time. Now my phone won't give me notification in the status bar that I'm getting a message.

[Q] Catastrophic Battery Issues

I am on my third OG. The two previous failures appeared to be catastrophic battery issues. Both phones were rooted and unlocked. This last time the phone was having issues with GPS, so I rebooted. That was it. Never came on, completely, again. Sprint told me they can't fix it because the battery is too low to start. The one before had a "similar" issue, but Sprint had a doner battery to fix it. Can anyone shed any light on this. Has anyone heard of any similar problems. I hate this phone because the battery is not removable and it drains much quicker than my Evo 4G
Have you tried to get into download mode? Also are you using the charger that came with the phone?

I tried everything and finally received, today, my third OG. Not sure about the charging, as I have several types of adapters and chargers around. I thought the micro USB was a standard for power. I just want to prevent this from happening a third time. Thanks for your response.

the plug in is universal but some of the wall plug ins are different voltages I believe...I know my optimus 3d wouldn't charge when fully dead on some of my old chargers. don't know if that was your problem but it is strange to have two in a row do that.

First off, I'm sorry to hear that happened to you- but you're not alone.
I've been a lurker on the forums for a while now- and I had this happen to me about a week ago as well. My phone was acting exactly as you described- I was using the GPS, and I let the battery get low (~5%) and it powered down.
When my phone wouldn't power up after letting it charge, I wasn't phased at first- I had let my phone's battery drain low before (causing it to glitch) and had been able to restore it through Lgnpst or TWRP- but this time it was as if the battery couldn't hold a charge.
I got mine into download mode eventually and was able to flash teenybins and a stock rom- when I finally got it to boot again- it was only charged to 13% (after about three days of charging). I played with wiping the battery stats and restoring old backups just to be sure- but it would never charge over 13%.
I'm of the belief this is a heat failure. It was about 95* in my car without A/C and heavy usage- I was so busy trying to get work done that day I didn't realize how hot my phone must have been getting.
I'm picking up my new LGOG tomorrow- I'm interested to hear more about how you came to the same issue ( providing we really are having the same problem)

Extreme battery drain

So my phone was at full charge. Took it off the charger and ate dinner. I was not using my phone and noticed it was extremely hot. Battery was down to 40 percent in less than an hour. I reboot phone thinking it was a wake lock issue. Phone battery dies and drains to 0 percent. I had to plug it into a charger in order to turn it on. From here I notice that the phone gets extremely hot and charges extremely slow. It's been charging for an hour and only 5 percent has been charged. I think maybe it was my ROM or a persisting wake lock. I wipe my phone and clean flash cyanogen. Phone still getting hot and charging extremely slow. Could I possibly have a malfunctioning battery or something?

Woke up in the middle of the night after about 4 hours of charging. Battery was at about 40% or so but the phone was the hottest it's ever been. I decided to turn it off and unplug it from the charger. Woke up this morning and it's officially dead dead. The orange/red LED won't turn on when plugged into the charger and I can't turn it on or try to boot into recovery.
I'm going to take it to Costco and see if I can get a replacement since I'm in my 90 day period. This certainly has to be a manufacturer's defect since I did not have water damage, drop my phone, overclock, or anything risky.

There have been a few people who have had the same issue. I haven't read of a fix or even what causes it.

Check and see what is using the battery. A day ago Google play store was the cause of battery drain for a lot of people.
It's not just a One its a tiKtaK One
Well my phone can't even turn on right now - it is literally a dead phone. I'll check one more time before trying to exchange it at Costco. I don't think it's Google play because I did a full wipe and fresh install of Cyanogen. I did not even setup my WiFi and put my phone on Airplane mode while charging. It was still running hot and charging extremely slow.

Just got back from Costco. Got a brand new phone without questions asked. Great service.
This is happening to me again right now..
I'm in luck though, as I'm on a charger and around 50%.. I went from about 100% to 11% in 20 minutes this morning. I've been running SlimKat for about a week now, and have had no issues.
I have no idea why this just pops up at a seemingly random time.
Now, I've wiped the entire phone, installed BoneStock, and it's still persisting.
What can I try to get this fixed?
I've held PWR and Vol+/- to reset the phone.. but this is still occuring.
Anything? Anyone?

I'm having a similar issue. I'm worried that I won't have enough battery to return the phone to stock and relock the bootloader, which is what I meant in the other thread when I said unable to return to stock.

Have you tried turning it off and plugging it into a wall outlet for a while?
What recovery are you using?
If I was you, I would probably plug it in with it off, hope that I get enough juice into it over a period of time, that I could flash the full odex stock rom.
The Faux Hboot in my Red Text Hex Edited hboot thread, so that it appears as though it's s-on and locked.
Flash stock recovery and warranty it to HTC. They should just take it apart and put a new battery in and send you the same device back.
Those are pretty much the steps I would take if I was in your shoes.
Hope that maybe that helps a little and that you can get enough of a charge to do so.

I've heard good things about HTC's Customer service, compared to Verizon's especially.
Not to mention, Verizon will wanna know if you have Insurance, will maybe make you pay a deductible.
Even if they don't, you will likely get a refurbished CLN replacement, which may or may not exhibit it's own issues of some kind.
I would rather have my own device fixed and sent back to me, then receive someone else's fixed device that may have had a bigger issue or stress to parts not yet known.
Just how I feel about it, and I do not much care for Verizon, other then for actual phone service.
You are more then welcome to try your hand with Verizon if you would prefer.
I also have a Blue One, so Verizon wouldn't do much for me...

Random Reboots to 0% battery

Hello,
Recently I have been having a problem where my phone would show say 80% battery but then it would crash and randomly reboot to 0-30% battery. This may happen just 15 minutes after fully charging my phone. I am just trying to find out the source of the problem. I am using the rooted stock rom. Any ideas?
Cheers.

You could try calibrating your battery but honestly I think its an actual battery issue. I was having similar problems, and I realized it was the actual battery that was just damaged or worn out so i got it replaced. Haven't had an issue since. You can also try all of your normal troubleshooting like a factory reset and re flashing the firmware but it's most likely a battery issue.

80 for a battery replacement on this device? That's not horribly bad. For sure thought it would be almost th CPA of a new phone.

Yeah not too bad. I just wish they had removable batteries but I know we'll never go back to that.

Bad Battery?

I know. I've seen the threads for battery drain and such, but I don't think there's a problem with "drain" so much, as perhaps a bad battery altogether.
I'm using my old M8 for my daughter, but after RUU, and setting up latest TWRP and all, then trying to install a custom ROM whether Stock or AOSP, when I boot into recovery, it goes from 100% within the ROM, to show 80% in recovery.
If off the charger, there does appear to have some battery drain, but I chalk that up to normal first usage.
However, it then shuts off @ 30%, but when I put it on the charger, it says @ 60%.
I've done the calibration method (hold all buttons for 2 minutes) trick, but there appears to be no help for the erratic battery readings.
Does anyone know if my suspicion is correct?
I'm on Sprint's last RUU.

Ive seen so many posts now that refer to the exact thing you mention. Phones turning off at 20-30%. Its claimed that this is due to a faulty battery and a replacement has fixed it. I do not have this problem, however, I did get a replacement 12 months ago.
That's what I'm afraid of.
Did you replace it yourself, or have a tech do it?

I replaced mine just Yesterday, with both speakers, chraging portero AND buttons, its not that hard AND not easy, you Will nerd a razor blade, AND see a few videos first, one thing to have in mind Is that i put a m9 battery on my m8, AND the phone works, but the phone doesnt recognize the aditional 240mamps,. AND the battery temp always shows 25C, but besides that everything is ok, waiting for the battery yo settle.
