[Q] Where are ring tones and sound effects located? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings folks,
I'm totally stoked with my G2, everything works 100% out the box, which is more than I can say for any of the three Vibrants I've had. There is one thing I miss though; The vibrant had a much better ringtones and sound effects than the G2. Where are these files located in the android system so I can copy the ones from the vibrant to the G2? Cheers for any help.
Dennis

Its in the settings and scroll to sound and that's were you will find it and you can add your own but it requires connection to a computer but its easy
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App

Put them on the sdcard. You can use the from there.

Is it in a subfolder or something? When I plug my vibrant in to my laptop I can browse folders on the phone, but I have yet to find a folder called "sounds" within the settings folder. I'm running Win7 64bit if this helps or hinders. Thanks.

I have all mines in an Audio folder then sub folder in that with notifications, ringtones, alarm.. and they get picked up in each individual setting I believe..

Use your computer and drag your audio folder onto the SDCard after you mount the card from your phone
Reboot required for them to get recognized

ah ok, got it. Is it the same for notifications too? all I did was open the file in music and used the set as ringtone. I didn't see it on the menu in settings... is there a different way to do so?
****EDIT**** Nevermind! I see it now! Thanks a lot! Hope others that feel as noobish as I did, and didn't want to ask can just read what just happened.

But where are the stock ringtones and sound effects located that come on the phone out the box? I want to copy those off of my vibrant onto my G2. If they're on the phone from the factory they must be somewhere-I just haven't been able to find them when I hook my phone up to my computer. Even in debug mode I can't locate them. I'm totally raising my hand as a noob here, so please forgive me if they're hidden right in front of my face.

You cant access them unless you have root access.
If you do.......they should be located in \system\media\audio\

Ahh. Right, well there it is. Its not rooted. At least it wasn't in front of my face. Cheers for the info.

You can get to and view the folder via ADB without root. You can also use adb to copy the files to your PC even if you don't have root. You just can't copy them back.
Here is the location and the contents of the "Ringtones" folder. I was surprised to see that they were ogg files.

You can use OI File Manager to copy them also (the file manager that works/recommended with Dropbox) without having Root. I used that to see that there is no freaking lock sound file on the G2 under /system/media/audio/ui sigh...

If you mount your card, you'll see that there is a folder called: /Music -- this where you music will go.
For your ringtones; you'll place them inside: /system/media/audio/ringtones
In regards to the Droid X .ogg file -- if that's for the bootanimation; then that file needs to be placed in /system/customize/resource and it will have to be ranamed to: SPC_animation_final.mp3, before you copy it over to that directory.
Thanks very Much
Ok, so may sound ehh.. but How do you mount the microsd, I have it in disk drive mode right now

Disk drive mode = mounting. When you connect your phone to your computer -- your phone to should you with options, choose Disk Drive.
Ok cool, I had to add the Music Folder since I did the root and didnt have any music on there, but Im looking at my folder and I dont see a systems folder and I have my computer set to show hidden files and folders
so I dont see /System
I do have a folder called /media/audio
and there is a notifications folder in there and in there is a facebook_ringtone_pop.m4a

The /systems folder won't be on your sdcard, but rather on the phone itself.
You need to open shell/cmd and run:
Code:
adb remount
adb shell
cd /system/media/audio
ls -- You'll see the ringtones folder once you issue this command
Now that you know where the ringtones folder is, can you just adb push the ringtones you want to that folder.
To do this:
1. Put whatever ringtone you want into your AndroidSDK\tools folder first!
2. Open shell/cmd
3. Run following command(s):
Code:
adb push name-of-ringtone.mp3 /system/media/audio/ringtones
Repeat that command if you have more than one ringtone. After you've done that -- you'll need to reboot your phone and when you go to select a ringtone, your's should up.

[Q](SOLVED) Personal Audio files

Hi All,
I've taken a look around and can't seem to find anything relating to this so I'm gona ask.
I've just got my DHD and love it but I have never used Android before so it's taking some getting used to. ( I'll get there I'm sure )
My question is I have an MP3 file I'd like to use for my notifications ( comes from my HTC Touch HD ) but for the life of me I can't seem to put it in the media folder that the DHD uses. I can find it using the ES file search thing but it won't let me copy in to it?
Do I need to get admin rights? Rooting or whatever its called?
Sorry if it's a daft question. but its annoying the bejesus outa me.
Thanks in advance
JD
I think you have got to place the mp3 in a folder on the root of your sdcard called "notifications".
Hope that works!
Hi CD993,
Thanks for the reply but..
I can't find any folders on the sdcard other than the ones i've made from having it in my Touch HD.
I can however find the Notifications folder in audio on the phones memory. This has all the MP3's that the phone uses. But still I can't paste to it. Just says copy failed.
I'm just wondering if I need to "jailbreak it" or root....something something to be able to add to the root folders.
put your phone in settings, connect to pc,select disc drive now your computer willl see your sdcard as a drive look at your my computer and either go into my mobile at the bottom or go into the sdcard on my computer it comes up as Idrive as copy your mp3 file into your mobile here disconnect your mobile and search for it in your mp3 files through your media music app.you may have to reboot your mobile once disconnected from the computer so the file gets noticed.
if this is not what your looking for then sorry but I dunno.
Hi Magpie,
Thanks but no.
I already have the MP3 on the sdcard but I can't seem to copy it to the system/media/audio/notifications. This is where the phone reads the sounds that it plays when you receive email/txt etc.
Maybe I should just flash a new ROM although this appears harder than it is with the touch HD on winmo lol
Thanks for the reply anyways
JD
Edit:
I've since managed to Root the phone "give me root admin rights" but still am unable to copy files to the phones root folders.
Im sure you just put the mp3's in a folder on your sdcard called notifications e.g. sdcard/notifications/ringtone.mp3

Hi CD993,
Maybe there is a problem with my sdcard? I don't have such a folder on it. I have a music folder data folders google folders I've looked through them all and can't find a notifications folder on the sdcard?
Should the DHD be using the sdcard as its main source for audio etc?
SdCard/Sounds/Notifications
SdCard/Sounds/Alarms
SdCard/Sounds/Ringtones
SdCard/Sounds/UI
Make the folders as you need them. Then you will be able to find them in the Sounds tab in the menu.

If you have root access you should be able to write them to the main memory using a program like Root Explorer. You can find system sounds in /System/Media/Audio.

Flashing Android ROMs is so much easier than WM. It's getting the root that is the *****. It took me ages to work out how to install the ADB drivers when I first got my Desire.
Flashing ROM's just replaces two folders, so if you are updating from one AOSP ROM to another, maybe even Sense I don't know I don't use it, generally speaking you don't need to wipe the phone and you keep all of your apps.

Hi Kal,
Yes as far as I'm aware I have root perms. i used VISIOnary? and followed a thread on here When I open cmd promt or whatever its called on linux and type su it gives me the # which apparantly means i have rooted it?
Yet I was unable to copy to that folder on the phones main memory.
That ADB driver I'm afraid i've not even looked into it yet all I know is my win 7 failed to install it when I plugged the phone in for the first time.
I've gotten as far as using titanium back up for apps etc. Just need to do some more research I guess I'm new to android
anyway thanks for all your help people. i'm sure i'll have more questions in the appropriate threads as time goes by. Thanks all

Personal Audio Files for Yahoo! Mail
Everything you all have said works, if I put something in mnt/sdcard/media/audio/notifications I am able to then see the files under the Sounds Setting.
My issue is needing Yahoo Mail to see the notification. For that I need to copy the files to /system/media/audio/notification and for that I am not able to change the permissions. I have tried ES File Explorer and I am not even able to move up from sdcard. I have also tried total commander and I get "Error writing to target file! /system/media/audio/notifications/yahoo.mp3
Can someone please help. I really like the Yahoo! application.
Setting Yahoo Notification
Root explorer will allow you to change the directory from Read Only to Read Write. It can be purchased from Play (Market) or acquired by other means as I did.
Copy the file to /system/media/audio/notification using root explorer.
Reboot.
Tada...

[MOD] Windows Phone 7 Tick Sound AT&T / T-Mo

I customized the UI sounds for the SGS3: Tick Effect & Keyboard sounds with that of WP7 tick sound and customized the camera / video button sound, etc.
Make sure you rename your stock UI sounds (Example: *tick_effect) before you over-right them.
Upzip / copy and paste in: System>Media>Audio>ui

What seems to be the prob? Just download the zip to your sdcard, unzip it, open root explorer, copy and paste the apk's you want to install and copy and paste them in: Root/System/app
Should be it. *might have to install it and or change permissions*
Awesome! I had to turn off the touch clicks and, since I hate haptic feedback, it's nice to be able to regain some response in the phone's UI.
Thanks.
If you want to further customize your UI to resemble WP7 here is the font.
Should be able to just install the apk and go to settings display and set font.http://db.tt/Wmgm3nST

when i try to rename the stock ui sounds so i can ad the new ones root explore says something about bricking my device lol can anyone give me the steps to do this correctly
Use root explorer, make the directory r/w, copy the sounds into system / media / audio / ui folder.... You will (or should be if you are doing it right) be overwriting pre existing files. Once done and you have overwritten the sounds you wanted to change, reboot phone.
You may need to rename the file if you want it represent/be used for another function. For example, inside the zip file there is a file names backspace.ogg..... Say you want to use it for the TW_touch.ogg sound.... You will need to rename it and all that. Only problem is by the time you cuztomize things to the way you like, a new updated rom is put out and you have to do it again!

It's just warning you because you are editing system settings. Renaming anything in the specified folder won't cause any damage.

Use Root Explorer, other file managers won't have permission to change system files. With Root Explorer you will also need to select Mount R/W to be able to write to the system folder.
Make sure you rename all the original files if you ever want to use the original sounds again...I just went back to AOSP lock/unlock sounds, the WP7 sound was a bit sharp.
all worked as soon as i got root explorer thanks guys, am dissapointed though as i am looking to get away from the drip and water sounds, i guess i want a more iphone like sound for typing and lock and unlock without having the iphone....any ideas

I assure you, you wont brick your device from just renaming a sound file. I do it all the time. Maybe its for when you try and rename a needed framework or system file.

Where I should write my ringtones in order to Android recognize them

Hi every, I've downloaded several ringtones using Zedge application as yours should notice in the img1.png attached. I'm trying to change the default tone using one of this and can't see them. Where I should place them in the internal storage (see img2.png)?

Wrong section. Your post is supposed to be in "Q & A" section.
You just need to create a folder "Ringtones" in the internal SD card. Then copy your ringtones to this folder.

You could also put in the system folder if you have root access. I currently have the Skyrocket so this solution might not work for you. I put my .ogg file in /system/media/audio/ and then into the proper sub directory either /alarms /notifications or /ringtones. Then rebooted my system and I could assign them properly. Actually the first suggestion worked for me as well, but I just like having all my files in the same place. So it might work or it might not... i can't say for sure. I subscribe to the nexus development because g/f's mom who has the nexus and likes slim rom a lot.

Yeah I think that the .ogg will work for sure. I just used root explorer the app to find out what my other ringtones were and then converted the ringtone to that file.
You have to put your ringtones in a folder called "Ringtones". Not just in the internal SD card.

I have a few mp3's and ringtones I got from zedge as well and I couldn't see them at first - you just need to let the mediascanner find them. A reboot will force the phone's mediascanner to do so, or it'll find them on its own in a little bit.

Ringtone/mp3 files will not be available as ringtones unless they are in the ringtones folder. Rebooting the phone won't change that, at least not with the stock ROM.

One reason to NOT put custom ring tones in the /system/media/audio/ringtones folder is that if you wipe your system (to change ROM's, for example), is that the system wipe would then also wipe your custom ringtones. However, if you place them in the Ringtones folder on your sdcard, that doesn't get wiped, and you'll be able to use the ringtones right away after flashing a new ROM, and you won't have to re-copy them onto your phone.

The post before mine had already ascertained which folder to put them in, I was just adding that to force a mediascan of that folder a reboot would do the trick. Sorry for any confusion
install es file explorer on to your phone.
When you want to select a new ringtone, the phone will ask you to either select a "system tone" or "select a file" (using the file explorer)
then you just navigate to the sound file no matter what folder you stored it in (on your sd)

It's called ChargingStarted.ogg and it's located in System/media/audio/ui. You can use an app like ES File Explorer to copy it to another location. If you want the sound to show in your notification sounds make a folder on the internal SD card (normally 0) called Media. Inside the media folder make two more folders called Ringtone and Notifications. Put a copy of ChargingStarted.ogg in the Notifications folder and it will show with your normal notification sounds.
Thanks!

Does this require root? I cannot locate the System folder using ES File Explorer upgraded version. Also my device is the S9 SM-G960W if that makes a difference.
Thanks!

Does not require root and you need to navigate back to the very root of the device, not /sdcard, further back than that where it shows just /
Total Commander can do it too
I don't know ES file Explorer options, but with the Asus file manager, you have to go to settings and show hidden files and folders. Then you can back up to the root folder. Then you'll find "System".
Samsung's own file manager won't do that. Google's Files app can't either.

Navigating not an issue, well versed. For some reason ES Pro will not show anything off root. Maybe a setting wrong although I went over a few times. That being said pro tip re: TC - showed everything - file copied and functional in under a minute. Thanks so much, appreciate it!

I switched from ES to TC a few weeks ago, discovered TC uses SMB2 for LAN transfers, whereas ES must use SMB1 and is pathetically slow, with TC I can transfer GB videos via WiFi to a shared folder on the PC in no time
ES can definitely show root, maybe need to enable a setting like you say, I don't have it installed atm though, iirc I used the nav bar at the top to get there, think I just pressed on the / icon, or as far back as it would show, and then the next dir would show the / to press, something like that
