Protecting the Camera in your pocket - Droid X Accessories

New owner of a Droid X here. I am loving the screen size and think it is an excellent phone (replaced my iPhone 4). I'm a bit worried about the camera bump in my pocket. I carry the phone with the screen facing my leg. The bump seems like an easy target for a table corner, or car door etc. I didn't notice this issue with my Droid 2 which the X is replacing.
Do you all have any suggestions for protecting the camera while in my pocket without adding too much bulk? Does it actually need impact protection?

I've had my X for three months now with the phone in my pocket, screen against my leg and have yet to have a problem.

yeah same. i think u should be more concerned about breaking ur screen than the camera. have the screen facing ur leg at all times. and the camera out. cuz when u reach into ur pocket, u can just use the camera as a handle to get it out. haha

So, did the X replace the iPhone 4 or the Droid 2?

im confused. first you say the droid x is replacing your iPhone 4 then you say it is replacing your Droid 2. lol which one is it replacing?

One thing for sure here the iphone was replaced by an android phone

Nearly any of the cases would give you that extra 1 or 2mm which may help as well.

Don't worry about the camera. It seems like it'd be susceptible to damage but it's really not. I'm sure if there were enough force it'd be damaged, but I've smacked the camera on corners, dropped it on pavement, and all sorts of things where I thought "crap there goes the camera." No damage. The whole thing is built pretty solid.

as far as i know motorola is the only company that does a "drop test", if its anything i like about motorola phones is that it takes a lot to break them literally

seems to scratch easily.....

Ive only had mine since the Saturday before last and already I have a tiny scuff on the lens and a hairline scratch on the screen. I've not dropped, manhandled or in any way mistreated the handset and I keep it in my jeans pocket with no other items....I can't for the life of me work out how this has happened. Luckily It's going back to T-Mobile as I'm not happy with the headphone loudness...unfortunately it will spoil my enjoyment of the device a little as I'm going to be constantly worrying about scratches .appearing from nowhere.
Just thought I'd let you guys know that it might be wise to get a case and screen protector for your Desire and not assume that careful handling will prevent it getting irritating scratches or marks.
I have not received mine yet (it should be tomorrow), but I got same experience like yours with my HTC Kaiser.
I put it in my jeans pocket with nothing else, but yeah ... got scratches and the LENS cover is dirty which you cannot clean it.
I could buy the back part where the lens cover reside, but that's 30 euro in cost.
So, now, I bought a "seal" type of pouch for my upcoming HTC Desire
http://www.fommy.co.uk/view-full-page.asp?divid=Google&cat=Cases&skuno=82280
I already received it, it is soft leather and look nice. It should cover the whole device with slide open on top.
And I will buy screen protector later from martinshields.com (bit expensive, but it never let me down on my HTC Kaiser, Touch Dual, and Nintendo DSi). Strong, clear, thin and NO BUBBLES!

Similar situation with me - a few tiny scratches on the screen. Have to look hard to see them, but they're there. Waiting on screen protectors.
Just in case your getting confused... The screen has a cross hatch set of lines in it... Its part of the multitouch hardware i think. you can only see it in some angles of light. Same with the gridded dots.
Though i did buy a cheap felt pouch to keep it safe untill the PDAir cases come out.
I had a spare screen protector from my Milestone i just cut it to size and used that, far better than not having one at all, even though my old phone the Milestone had gorilla glass which they say you can't scratch i still never trusted it.
put it in a pouch.
Just cos there's no keys, pens etc. in your pocket, does not mean there's no fluff, grit or something else in there that will scratch the screen when it's pressed against your leg. all it takes is a tiny particle of grit or sand to get between the lining of your pocket and the screen and it'll scratch it to buggery!
I put an old Hero screen protector on mine, its covered the main screen portion but not the bezel area, waiting on my official screen protector though!
lets hope zagg release their invisible shield soon. those things are awesome!
I am going to try buy these official screen protectors

I thought it had the same glass screen as the HD2?
They have uploaded video of someone using keys and knives on an HD2 screen to try and scratch it and have failed...
@leoni1980
You had hd2 if I remember correctly?
I consider buying desire, could you compare overall build quality of this two devices? Also, is call quality in desire better than hd 2?
One more question:
In a phone call, does proximity sensor works like one on hd2 or iphone? Or do you must turn the screen on/off manualy?
Thanks.

The screen turns off when you lift the phone to your face in a call, and turns back on when you bring it down.
The build quality is as good I think, although this opinion is somewhat tainted by the fact that under the same circumstances my HD2 never developed a single scratch or scuff. I have a few tiny nicks on my camera lens already which is incredibly annoying since it is literally just 11 days of usage....one would expect a phone kept purely in a trouser pocket on its own to endure longer than a week and a half before developing marks.....
I'm really quite put off by this. When I get my replacement it'll be going straight in a gel case, though lord knows what I will use to protect the lens (which is clearly very susceptible to damage).
This is why I always say: use a pouch and use a screen protector! And e.g. when placing the phone on a hard surface, use the pouch as protection (read: put the phone on top of the pouch or keep the phone inside the pouch).
Mobiles are becoming disposable objects more and more. People use them for two years and then get rid of them (in the garbage bin). So not all people care about scratches etc. They will probably think the pouch and screen protector is nonsense.
Btw, getting a scratch doesn't nescecarily say something about the quality of the phone. In my experience getting a scratch on the phone is usually just bad luck. E.g. I had my Omnia for half a year, no scratches whatsoever. And my Hero was scratched the first week (even when I am so carefull with my stuff). Build quality of the Hero is much better than the Omnia imho (Omnia is all plastic, and chrome paint etc usually damages quickly). It only takes one silly moment to get a scratch unfortunately.
I always sell my phones after some time, every scratch is less value!
Guys Guys...It's a phone, scratch the baby up a bit let her live a little, all you are doing is keeping it tidy for the next owner, my phones are f**ked by the time the next all singing handset comes out so it gives me an excuse to buy the next one.
You might get 50 quid less by sending it off to envirofone or whatever but who cares it's only a phone and does not need leather fluffy cases
ronnyuk, you took the words out of my mouth. Spending time opening cases or sliding in and out of a pouch isnt worth it. Get past the first few scratches and then you can enjoy you phone without the worry. No scratches on mine yet though. Somehow I don't think the desire is going to stand up to what my touch pro went through. That was one seriously tough phone. I have dents in my wall from that baby.
RaptorRVL,
Did you specifically buy a pouch for your HTC Desire?
Or is it a used one from your other device?
If possible, let me know which one and where did you buy the pouch.
As I noted above, I got simple and nice soft-leather pouch from Fommy.co.uk, but if your pouch is nicer I will change

The Desire screen is certainly alot harder than the Touch HD due, I assume, to the different technologies. Thus I am hoping to get away without a protective screen - which I could never seem to get on the HD perfectly.
I was just wondering though whether, if the worst came to the worst, and my Desire does get scratched can you use a Displex ( http://www.displex.com ) type scratch remover? Worked very well on my early non-touch screen phones but clearly would not on the soft finish of the HD.
Anyone know whether OK on the capacactive Desire screen - still have half a tube left?

I got this one :
http://cgi.ebay.nl/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160415564575&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
It's super cheap, 4 euros. It's for the nexus but fits the Desire very nicely (same size). Perhaps it could have been a few mm longer, that would have been perfect (little bit more protection at the top). But I guess it will all stretch a bit since its neoprene.
Can take a picture tomorrow with the Desire in if you want.

[Q] how durable?

Okay here's the deal.. I currently have an HTC Desire, and I recently tried the SGSII.. My desire is a FREAKING TANK! I cant hurt it no matter what I do, including sending it flying across the room more times then I care to admit.. the glass has one tiny light scratch from when it spent a day in my pocket with my keys.. The SGSII on the other hand, I dropped it (rather gently) from my pocket the day I got it, and the case got a huge ugly gouge!
We've all seen the video of the guy taking his keys to the glass, which is what you should be able to do with any smartphone, but how does the actual case housing stand up? anyone got any stories of terrible incidents it survived unblemished?
I am hard on my phones.. I dont deny it, so I want something that will handle a beating and I'm kinda skeptical of Samsung after my experience with the SGSII.
P.S. my alternate is the Amaze
I too had a Desire and I have to say I am very pleased with the build quality of the GN. I can't say I've thrown my brand new phone across the room or even dropped it yet (I'm not the most accident prone) but it seems to be a sturdy piece of kit!

If you were unimpressed by the build quality/durability of the SGSII casing, not much is going to change with your feelings on the GN. Its built pretty much out of the same materials. You're best off sticking with an extra case if you get it.

Dropping it on carpet just proves that the screen/internals won't break from a hard fall. I think what OP is referring to in the case of his old SGSII is big gouges or scratches in the casing, which the GN will probably suffer from the same way.
I ordered this for good measure..lol

Yes I was referring to actually dropping it.. Every other week my desire gets knocked off the living room table, or the like. I don't actively throw it or go out of my way to be rough, but we have an active house, And things happen. I guess I'll have to look into a very slim case, as I usually just toss it in my Jeans front pocket And go.

Well there was that thread where a guy cracked his screen.
The bit that worried me was when a second guy posted his cracked too. He put it in his pocket as normal, got to work and the screen was cracked :/

Sounds like BS to me. There had to be something in his pocket putting a lot of pressure on the glass. And he must wear some skin tight jeans for that to happen... or something bashed his phone.

[Q] Better Quality Screens

so this will be my 3rd time replacing my screen.
and I KNOW i should get a case for my phone but i feel like the cases make the phone bigger.
anyways, does anyone know where to get a better quality screen that can take more impact?
Buy a case, clumsy. Can't believe you've spent so much money already. Look at UAG.

If you broke and replaced your screen three times already what you need to do is to buy a good
quality small padded suitcase and never remove the phone from it unless you have an emergency. LOL.
The quality of the screen isn't the problem but it's the quality and temperament of whoever is using the phone.
well i bought the phone and replaced it so that was the first time
second time i was charging my phone 2 inches above the floor and it dropped onto tile and cracked
3rd time it slide off my car hood and dropped and cracked.
when i had my htc one s it never broke so easily
and it surprised me that my screen cracked 2 inches above the floor
Use a go phone ,or old school ones .You know whats the definition of insanity right ?

Help me decide please

Hey friends,
I'm holding an HTC 10 in my hands right now after I had the s7e briefly for a couple of days a month ago I decided to take it back and wait for the HTC 10.
Finally I got mine 4 days ago and I have mixed feelings about it. Obviously the s7 edge is better in the display, battery and camera department. The main reason why I returned the s7e is the stupid edged screen which I found irritating to handle and I didn't like how the display curves around the edges and cuts of text in some apps. The bending of light around the edges also irritated me.
The HTC 10 is one great device and I love the decide in general except for a few minor points. The camera is not as quick.
Still I find myself somehow tempted to switch back to the s7e but I am afraid I'll regret it again... Ohhhh ocd.
Maybe you can give me some good reasons why you chose the HTC over the s7e?
Thanks!

To me
-HTC is better screen, but thats a preference in what you like.
-S7Edge screen can be fix with a case, I got the Ringke fusion clear case and I dont hit buttons inadvertently when I type anymore.
-The edge can be turn off.
-If you dont like the edge, get the regular S7 with exynos processor.
The only reason that people may tell you to get the HTC 10 is because they think touchwiz is still slow. Boomsound speaker is another reason to switch however, you can get dual facing speaker with the S7 edge just look at my video I posted a few days ago.
Ultimately this is what it come down to:
HTC 10
HTC blink feed
Metal
Boomsound speaker
Samsung
All glass design
enormous S7 edge battery
IP68 water proof
dual speaker (only on exynos phone)
The screen is up for grabs but if you like amoled then Samsung is the way for you.
I'm hoping BestBuy gets some unlocked HTC 10s in soon or I'll have to grab a Galaxy.
The number one reason I want an HTC 10 over a GS7 is build quality. The all glass construction of the GS7 is a disaster waiting to happen.
I've read far to many horror stories, not to mention all the drop videos, showing what happens when they hit the ground, even carpet.
I'm kind of in the same boat. I actually have both the S7 and the HTC 10 on my desk right now. There are a lot of things that I like about each one, but I'm torn between which to keep.
S7 Pros
- 5x5 app grid
- Volume and power buttons on the opposite sides of the phone
- Headphone jack at the bottom
- Quick settings accessible with one swipe
- FM radio
HTC 10 Pros
- Faster fingerprint reader
- "Capacitive" home button
- Cleaner Sense interface
- BoomSound
- Finally good camera
I like that the S7 is a little smaller and easier to manage with one hand, and Touchwiz seems to be a lot more refined. I think that HTC actually pared Sense back a little too much with the 10. There's not a lot of Sense left, but they kept the 4x4 app grid, which I really can't stand. On a 5.2" screen, it's really a total waste of space, and from what I can tell, the only way to fix that is to install a custom ROM, which I don't want to do until I'm sure I want to keep it. I'm also struggling because I feel like my S7 may have a defective display. The whites are kind of off and whenever I angle the phone slightly off center, the display gets a blue tint to it. I've never had an AMOLED display before, so I don't know if this is just how they are, or I have a bad one.
Any advice?

If you liked the S7e but hated the edges, why not just get the S7 and be done with it? You're in an htc section so you're going to get biased opinions.

thats what a case is for. are you going to carry your HTC naked?
I drop my S7E once or twice about 4-5ft with a ringke fusion clear case and no damage at all.
I always use a case.
Just stating what I've learned from some research. There is also a topic in the GS7 forum concerning the camera glass cracking out of nowhere.
Regardless, I don't want to spend $700 on a device and worry about the entire phone shattering. Worrying about the screen on phones is enough.

if you use a case then how is it gonna crack?
thats like saying regardless if you have a case on the HTC 10 or not its gonna dent or scratch if you drop it. doesnt make sense.
A case will protect metal from scratching/denting much better than it will against glass breaking. Glass is far more fragile.
Last winter I slipped with my phone in my hand. My phone slammed into the ground and the case slipped off one corner. It left a scuff mark on my phone. The GS7 would have shattered. Case or not, it's simply more fragile due to its build material.
I'm not calling it a bad device, just a fragile one, like the all glass IPhone before it.
Updates are important to me. Camera is second but it's okay. The HTC camera isn't very good IMO. And when I say "isn't good" I mean not a convenient camera. It takes great shots and what not but there's no oleophobic coating on the lens so smudges affect the image more. It's just unreliable for me for the auto photographer like me.
Battery could be better but for me it could be an app draining it.

the problem lies in that you have a crappy case, not that the glass breaks and you have a case.
yes its fragile material, but if you have a case I dont see how it will break. that being said, I always own the Ringke fusion minimal clear case, drop my phone (S6, note 5 and S7 edge) several time, nothing happen. granted the HTC 10 wont shatter but it'll leave a dent or it'll scratch and it'll be a sore eye regardless.
Dude....if you have second thoughts about it, just return it already. Grown ups do not ask these childish question.

Question Fold 3 Screen cracking

Hey,
I have been a Note fan since the very beginning and a foldable with spen support has been a device of my dreams. When the Fold 3 was released I decided to go for it and give my Note 20 Ultra a break. The fold isn't perfect especially with such a small battery but as an exynos user the battery has always been a thing to compromise in my region. But,
The reports about the screen being so fragile and getting cracked in concerning numbers have halted me from getting this expensive piece of tech. I am aware of the cracking issues with the earlier folds but the reports about this third generation looks really concerning.
Are the cases that high? or is it just the usual (defective patch) in any product?
Think of it this way, no one will post about how their screen is fine and not cracked, but people will be inclined to post when their screen is shattered and broken. If every person with a screen that wasn't cracked would post theirs, it would far surpass the cracked screen numbers. I have had mine since 22nd of October and I have not had one issue, not one cracked screen. I recommend it as it's the best phone 2021 could bring.
Had mine since the early pre-order time. No screen crack or break, but I have a Spigen hard case on it. I've dropped it a few times, but have been uber lucky it wasn't anything that cause damage. One has to look at the cause of the damage before assuming it's a defect of the product.
Not sure what reports you have read, but I've yet to see an influx of cracked screens from general everyday use. Plus, many of use early birds have coverage for damage.
No issues here.
I have to wonder though, if the phone was left in a car overnight with below zero temps and then unfolded cold. What would happen? Has anyone been brave enough to try? ;-)
I have had mine since shortly after release and I use it... and I mean USE it...
I use the outer screen for many quick things, but I spent over 75% of my time opening and using the inner screen. I have a Fold SPen and use it constantly and I am STILL on the original factory inner screen protector and have ZERO issues with any bubbling, cracking or anything else on the device screen or the protector.
Just take some care of your device and it will take care of you.

There are some cars that specifically cover the hinge I believe. I think Samsung even has their own. But they seem so bulky and awkward.
NONE of the cases that I have seen or used or played with have a Hinge Cover that will protect from Dust/Water intrusion. Just not going to happen. Sorry mate.
I've had my Fold 3 since a couple of days before release day and use the inner screen 99.99% of the time, all day long. No issues here. I clean the dust and fingerprints (which you can barely see and don't cause the rainbow effect) with a reusable screen cloth from Amazon with a koala on it - bought it for my car stereo screen, but there are a ton in the pack, so I use them for different things.
Not only the operation of the phone in cold weather exasperating this issue but maybe also a combination of pressing on the screen with a finger to close the phone..
Plasticisers are a limited lifespan. They are what makes plastics flexible. As they fail, cracking is the result. With a close to a near 180° the engineering is less than brilliant. Made with a very finite lifespan in mind.
The Fold series is an even more niche market than the Notes. Like an inept gambler Samsung don't know when to run away. By shoving the prototype Fold down the throats of its loyal Note customer base Samsung deserves what they get... idiots.
sorry, blackhawk.. do you have one of these?? best phone ever lol.
if the stock protector fail, replacements are easy
Ya been a Note User since the first one .. after going Fold 3 I can never go back... love the screen .. really better battery, cameras, I'd like a micro SD slot again and for thr s pen to go into the phone and it would be perfect...
As for the screen cracking mine has not but the built in screen protector has peeled up so I peeled off ... all good so far.. but if you get this phone usually it's on a 24 month contract then you swap phones to 2 gens later. Also I'd assume everyone would get the insurance for the screen replacement etc... so if that's done you just send it in for any screen issues .

No, blackhawk just likes bagging it as far as I can tell.

I loved the note, from the very first, and my note 12 pro tablet. Now that I'm retired and don't need the spen I love the fold. It's like carrying a tablet in your pocket everywhere.
I can't wait until they actually get the whole 'Z' folding thing working, to triple the size
What I find funny is all the people bagging the idea of the Fold, alongside all the companies trying to make one themselves. I'm pretty sure Apple will sell one in five years, well behind the curve as usual while claiming to be ahead as usual.
Ha ha yes exactly apple will bring a foldable out when samsung goes to the next design for foldable.. I also like that sliding screen they might out put out ... I'd rather the than the folding but for now beggars can't be choosers lol
it's interesting that no one here had a bad experience while a similar thread on reddit is full of (cracked) displays
