[Q] Need help accessing system files Htc Evo - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
I am kinda new to Android and the Evo. I have OTA update 2.15.00.07.28 and have managed to sucessfully rooted my phone using Unvoked 3. I installed Baked Snack 1.7 Rom with Low Ridder theme. I have Rom manager 2.5.0.4 with ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.0.1. What I am having trouble doing is finding the system files! I searched the threads here / Google with no luck. I would like to be able to pull open all the system files from my Evo on my computer so I can better understand how Frayo 2.2 runs. When I boot into ClockworkMod Recovery and select mount sd card My files appear on my computer. However when I select mount system files nothing happens. I can't get a grasp of what mounting system files in the recovery does neither find a way to explore my Evo's system files. I saw a rooted app avaible for download in the app store that revieals system files on rooted phones but I would rather pull them up on my computer. I am using windows vista home 32bit OS. Thanks for any help in advanced.

Ok. For now, viewing your Android's true system files on your actual pc is impossible. However your can browse through them and make all the changes you need on your phone. First of all though. You need to be properly and fully rooted by using Toast's method part 1 and 2. This will properly root and unlock NAND protection on your phone to allow read/write access to /system. Unrevoked is **** for root as far as Im concerned. Although I would recommend using their S-off tool for further access. Search the XDA forums for toast's method for full root. But first, get comfortable with the mechanics of ADB. There are simple tutorials on XDA as well. After that make a small purchase and buy Root Explorer to browse everything you need! But be careful. Happy rooting XD

you can view any system file you want to view, on your computer. pull the file using adb, change it, push it back.
i'm not going to give a tutorial on adb though. there are plenty of threads about it.

If you just want to explore the system files and poke around, I would suggest downloading the ROM you are using and just unzipping to look at the files. If you want to go deeper you can download an android kitchen and decompile.

True. But consider the normal user, who in this case didn't even know how to properly root. I was suggesting the most problem free way for him.

Hey thanks for all the replys. I did not know evoked don't fully unlock the phone. I will look into toast tutorial. Was in kinda a hurry found the first thing on rooting and thought it worked because it allowed me to install roms. I have net seeing a lot on adb I think when I can find some time I will look into that as well.

Thanks for the heads up.

Dude that was time well spent.
ADB is essential to android all together, there may be one click root options and other quick fix packages but if your seriouse with android you need to know ADB.
+1 for adb knowledge.

Yeah adb is very usefull. Spending time to learn the commands will help you greatly in the future and also save you a lot of time.

YAY I FIXED IT. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I DID.
1. reboot
2. Open and run visionary (with set system r/w after root) checked.
3. After root is complete, click root again (should say already rooted)
4. Open Terminal and sype "su" then enter
5. Type "sync" and wait about a min
6. POWER OFF THE PHONE the right way by holding down the power.
7. After reboot it should work! YAY!!

I fixed it as well but I did differently.. maybe it will help those still having trouble.. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I DID.
1) The first problem I had was I had Visionary 11 AND 12 (+plus) installed and both were set to root on boot. This was just a left over quirk from after doing the perm root since I just assumed it had to be set to root on boot, and after installing Vis12 I forgot to uninstall Vis11. Apparently Vis12 doesn't overwrite Vis11 so having both apps root on boot was a bad thing.
2) So I deleted both visionary apps (When they tried to root on boot I backed out of them and just uninstalled them)
3) Then I rebooted and was still not permrooted (although S was off)!
4) Sooo I reinstalled Visionary 12(+Plus)... and checked root on boot AND the r/w partition setting. Then rebooted..
5) With the lone visionary now installed and working solo it rebooted and ran on root and I was rooted..
So now i"m like, ok.. it rooted with visionary, but I don't want visionary in order to root...
6) So I uninstalled visionary 12 (for the second time) and rebooted and now the root stuck.
I think that visionary 12 needs to run after the first reboot with those two settings checked... run on boot and the partition setting. After that happens once I think it makes the root stick.. or at least it did for me.
I had same issue with S-off but no root. I did the manual method and got S-off but root never stuck. I tried the manual method again and again but when I rebooted the apps would say root access could not be gained. What ended up working was I went into Visionary 12 and pushed the temp root button. Once I had temp root I then pushed the perm root button. It did it's thing and rebooted. Once it rebooted I had root that stuck. Don't know if this will help anyone having this issue but it was the only thing that worked for me. As a side note, it was like seeing an old childhood friend when I flashed Cyanogens bacon bits.

Yea gotta say I don't regret a single minute of searching reading and learning. I just wish I could have had the root and THEN learned how to use ADB simply because I'm an impatient chump at times. Learning how to use it seemed to open up my eyes to things though now I have a better grasp on everything I found confusing when I first came back to browsing the Android forums.

I am just curious: if I do this perm root with S-OFF, but keep the stock ROM for the time being, will that prevent potential future OTA's from T-Mobile, potential upgrades to next versions of Android?
Now, I understand that all those "updates" will also be available via these forums but I'm just a tad concerned that all the custom ROM's might have bugs that would prevent everyday features...
I appreciate stuff like overclocking and tethering/hotspot hacks, but I'm more of a "set it and forget it" kinda guy - most likely I won't have time to constantly test new ROM's and report bugs, wait for fixes, etc.
Just wondering if you have any suggestions?
P.S. Although I am not VERY technical with Android I was able to follow instructions around here to reflash stock ROM, but I was in the "emergency" mode - it was "do it or die" situation made me pretty nervous and I hope not to have to do that constantly
I did everything in the video...and I have s-off and the superuser app every reboot...but root won't stick....and yeah..I've tried temp and perm root with visionary r12 and 13....should I start all over again?

How to put cyanogen with visionary?

Hi, I'm sorta a noob with rooting so bare with me. First, what version of visionary should I use to root my device? Will it work after the ota update? What are the chances of visionary bricking my phone or doing anything that would make my phone unusable? Will it put SU on my phone? And now for the main question, how will I get cyanogen on my g2? Thanks for any help!
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
As far as i know visionary is not gonna brick your phone ,in regard to changing your rom you also need to s/off your phone, and to do that you need to setup ADB on your computer i suggest you read this posts first ,you will find all the answers you are after

After you root and s-off your phone you need to setup rom manager so you will get clockworkmod recovery and you can boot in to that and flash a new rom or kernel through there.
and i am not sure about the question you had about the update.
yes you will get su after rooting.

Ok, first there are already many threads on this subject, so next time you should try a search first,
for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850141
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=882546
Next the following links will help walk you thru rooting your phone using visionary r14. I have not had any problems with it, many people have rooted this way. If something goes wrong it is usually operator error. This method is for after the OTA. All needed files and links are in the video instructions.
Visionary has bricked phones before when not properly used, the videos show how to use it properly, use all the same settings in the videos.
This is the visionary method, but works perfectly when done correctly..
No adb needed.
Follow the videos to a "T", remove visionary and superusers from you phone if you already have them installed from a previous temp root before following the videos, start fresh, follow the videos starting with temp root then onto perm root then onto flashing a rom. Do everything just like the videos start to finish and you should have no problems.
Temp root first:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/10/20/how-to-root-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision-visionary-method/
Then perm root
http://theunlockr.com/2010/11/30/how-to-gain-permanent-root-and-s-off-on-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision/
Then flash a rom
http://theunlockr.com/2010/11/30/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision/
Remember don't assume you know how to temp root properly, follow all three videos start to finish and you should have no problems
Also the video "Load a custom rom" will give you a link to flash your first rom. There are a couple of choices to choose from.
Good Luck.
Editlease see post #32 in this thread for a testimony from someone who just followed the videos and rooted his phone.

Everyones still waiting on gingerbread, but it looks like Cyanogen is in the lead for releasing it.
Any time you flash a new rom you need to wipe data/cache in recovery. Updates to the same rom a wipe is not needed.
As far as what you want in a rom, my suggestion is to start flashing diffrent roms and give them a try. I thought I didnt like sense but I am currently running a sense rom (Virtuous). So you dont know till you try.
1) Don't use Visionary. People have had brick after brick when using it. Use the rage method.
2) There's a beta version of CM7.0.0 out. The devs are still working out the bugs in it.

1)Show me one brick from someone following the videos I posted and Ill take the links down. Yes a lot of people have bricked using visionary, but thats because they assumed they knew what they were doing when in fact they did not. Visionary causes bricks when not properly used, the videos shows how to use it properly. You must follow all the steps from start to finish including the temp root settings they use in the videos.
2)and yes there is a beta version of gingerbread out CM7 but Cyanogen did not officially release this version, and there are so many bugs in it I hardly think a noob needs to flash CM 7.0.0.

Its Rage method and heres a link to the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228&highlight=rage
I recommend you read this thread and make informed desicions, if you know how to use ADB, then this is another method. But if you dont the method I posted above is your other option, it doesn't require the use of ADB.
As far as ADB goes this is something I highly recommend learning, but we all know some people just dont get it. It took me a lot of reading and watching videos to understand ADB. Now that I know how to use ADB its pretty simple, but I remember when I first started with rooting ADB was like reading greek. But I really cant stress enough the importance of learning ADB.
Hahah sorry, i was using swype. And yeah, so what do you recomend, cause i really dont wanna brick my phone for its fairly new.
Oh, and another thing, if i root with visionary or rage, that only gives me root access. But if i flash a rom then i will also have cyanogen? And i was reading, since i wanna oc, whats this kernel stuff? Please forgive my noobish ways

I used the videos to root my G2, there have been a lot of bricks using Visionary but I have yet to see anyone say they followed the videos to the "T" and it bricked there phone. As for the Rage method, there have been almost no reports of bricks from this method, but I have seen a few bootloops (stuck on the HTC screen). It requires using ADB, so if your ok with ADB use the Rage method, if not, you'll have to weigh the risks based on your own ability. My suggestion, watch the videos, all of them and if its something within your skill range go for it.

Ok, get rooted first then you can worry about kernels, I believe Cyanogen 6.1.1 already comes with an overclocked kernel up to 1.42GHz. So all you have to do is flash CM 6.1.1 his latest release, then down load a cpu controlling app from the market like setcpu(which I use) or cputuner(free) and set the parameters you want your cpu to run at.
Thanks, but a boot loop is fixable right?

Not always hopefully if this happens you have gotten far enough along to put a recovery on your phone, or sometime you can stock recovery factory reset but if those options arn't there guess what you would have to have AndriodSDk installed on your computer with ADB, but you would have to do everything in fastboot mode which is giving commands from your computer to you phone. So it wouldn't be adb because you have to be booted into Andriod to use it, it would be fastboot and run commands similar to ADB, so for this purpose you would have to know how to use ADB. And even then no guarantees. So if you are looking for a guarantee you wont brick your phone there are none, and I wont give you one, these methods have been proven to work if you follow them exactly, mess up and you have a brick.
I know most people dont have $500+ laying around and I know I dont but for me the rewards far outweighed the risk. I just got a pm from another member that followed the videos and guess what he is rooted, he did it today. I asked him to post in this thread with his success story, so hopefully he will.
Here is a quote from him from my PM "it worked! i got so frustrated with adb, i gave it a shot and success!"
Edit: He just posted success his user name is robot_agenda and his post is #32 in this thread.

That has nothing to do with visionary, thats has to do with ClockworkMod recovery, if your phone is powered off and you plug it in to charge it boots into recovery, if you want root you have to deal with this issue untill they fix the bug in clockworkmod recovery. Also the phone shuts off fine unless its pluged in. Everyone with a htc vision phone who is rooted has this issue. as for me I charge my phone while it on so it doesn't bother me.

[Q] NB question... rooting & restoring factory rom

Pardon my ignorance -I have found some info from the forums as per the specifics of rooting and - im considering rooting my slide (as it seems 2.2 is never going to come) and go with CyanogenMod-6.1.1. Im never rooted a device but that part doesnt sound so hard (ive used linux before, etc) but my main concern question - is there a way i can make my own ROM code - or rather read out the rom code of my phone currently (pre-root), this way - should
a) i not have a good root experience (something not working right)
or
b) 2.2 comes out - via OTA
I can "go back" to my orinal rom code?
Moreover, is there a way I can go back and restore the original rom code that i backed up pre-root? I dont even know if reading out my own code can be done or if i must rely on some factory rom code available in some "slide bible" that has alluded me. Cant seem to find any slide rom bible as of yet.
Can anyone point me in the right direction or help ease my concerns...
Also ive read about "Titanium Backup" and 'Clockwork' and 'amon-ra' -- can any of these be used to backup current rom code prior to rooting ? or perhaps just after rooting?
New Bible:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=924793
Old Bible:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=704567
Old Bible definitely has stock rom. I glossed over the new one, didn't see them immediately, but I'm sure they're there.
Titanium Backup is for Apps, Clockwork and amon-ra are different types of Recovery. Within those two(or atleast Clockwork) you can make a "Nandroid Backup" which is what what you're looking for. It will backup your ROM/settings and stuff.
When you root you're going to be flashing an Engineer version that allows you to keep root, so you should make a nandroid of that. In the Bibles you'll find a link to a pretty easy root method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754020
Hope this helps.
i am new to this android stuff. but i flash or install new roms all the time to play with them, and in the old bible is the factory rom, i have tested it and gone back to factory and then rerooted just to see if i could. it is all possable with the little know how i have of linux.

Can some one please help
I have been trying to root my mytouch slide for quite some time. I have read post and followed directions on countless websites and even watched a few videos.
The first method i tried was the one where i had to go into command terminal, using sdk tools, and catch my phone in adb with "loop". This never worked because adb would only detect my phone when it was booted normally but when i would boot into recovery mode nothing would come up.
The second method was the one where i had to download a few files and put them in a folder in C:\ and from that directory in command terminal i had to run "my root" along with other commands that were supposed to push all the files I needed to my phones sd card. This didn't work because when i rebooted the phone into the bootloader the "ESPRIMG.zip" wasnt detected. So , im guessing, without that flashed first i cant install any other roms or upgrades.
I dont know what else to do and i would really appreciate it if someone would be able to help me finally root my fun
Sorry if i posted in the wrong spot or something.

If you want 2.2 OTA Go to CR's post in the development section and it should be one of the first. You have to root before installing as it is yet unreleased and it is unsigned. You can get all of the info on rooting/unrooting you need at theunlockr.com if you do not like root(which I highly doubt). There is an unrooting tutorial on theunlocker also.

i used the second one and i got it to work.
At first i was having the same problem with the hboot not recognizing the ESPRIMG.zip but after reading alot of comments someone gave me the idea to backup my sd card and to format the sd card and try again. I backup all the zip files i had from the previous attempt and i formated the card from the phone and then connected it to my laptop on "disk drive" and formatted it from windows also(I used FAT32). I uploaded all the zip files and started the process all over again and it work this time(attempt #23). Now im happily running cm6.

Sounds like you need to do a bit of reading and stuff, but the closest thing to an app that provides root for the Evo is Unrevoked. You run it from your computer, with your Evo plugged in via USB. Follow the instructions on how to do it, and read up. You need to have the correct hboot drivers, there are links and instructions on unrevoked website. www.unrevoked.com.

You should find all of these links useful, and help you get to know your Evo a bit. Have fun!!
i like unrevoked, but in my personal opinion, once you are done, you know nothing. you have this superuser app, cant ota, and are really confused and pissed. now, if you follow the link i have in my sig, you can root manually. you will begin to understand adb, the mechanichs of the evo, and how to flash roms, and the like. if you find it too confusing (or use an operating system besides windows) i can help a bit with the hand-holding. again, the one linked in my sig under rooting link is more advanced, but definetally worth it.

Yea, I agree with that. I wish I had rooted the manual way, but I went backwards. I rooted with Unrevoked, not knowing too much (as you said), but I did learn ADB and tons of other stuff from XDA and it's members. I'm just glad I'm comfortable with adb now, and in hindsight, it would've been beneficial to have learned adb first, ha.

I agree and disagree. I used unrevoked because it was easy. I learned adb by myself through trial and error, but also an engineering majoring, so i can use coding a bit. But it really depends on how well the users wants to know it and can still learn adb, cuz for some it might be better to go the easy way, then double back and learn it.

I agree. I dislike the black box method. Actually I've never used any of the unrevoked methods. For my first evo, I used toast's unroot method. For my second evo, I used what had to be the slickest shortest method using ADB. But this was back with 1.47.
I was a total android noob, no engineering degree, and limited unix/linux user (I know some commands but no scripting). But I can read and follow instructions.
You know, what method you use really depends on what you want to do. If you just want to root for wireless tether, then use unrevoked, but you will be annoyed and confused when you can't upgrade to gingerbread when it comes out (this was me with froyo). So choose wisely

I just didn't know anything yet. I was new to android and root and stuff. Somebody who asks for a one click app like z4root without even searching should probably familiarize himself with more advanced things.
I find the one-click method really easy.

true, but it is a way to make other magic happen, i.e., custom roms, kernels, radios and the like
Z4Root provides temporary root on the EVO, just so you know

ive used unrevoked to get rooted then learned how to flash roms properly and or manually... adding mods, kernels, zips full wipe and partially wipe when needed. i found it fun learning to FLASH roms.

[Q] Rooting my phone....

I just got my G2 phone not too long ago and I want to start doing this modding stuff. (I've never had a smart phone before, this is the first). And I'm not sure where to start... Can someone direct me into the right direction?
I used blackprince310's video to help me root my phone.

Once rooting you can download other ROMS. Which are like differnt OS. Like g2 runs stock froyo let's call that windows xp. When you root it u have the capabilities to modifiy without problem. Now u can put like sense on your phone that's like windows 7 persay.
Three main apps u need from app store are ROM Manager, Titanium Backup, & Superuser. Other ones could be gscript, terminal. & in video u need Visonary.

Is there an alternate way? Because I had been doing some reading on ppls feedback on diff threads n the visionary way seems to be a way to brick your phone or an unsafe way to go.
can anyone please help?
Goto development and find the stickies on rooting without visionary, I did it that way. Simple and haggle free and nothing to worry about, first time g2 user

Just follow the simple wiki guides. Don't use Visionary to perm root.
Youtube the unlockr for htc vision. You use the VISIONary app to temproot, then you can gain permroot after finishing both tutorials. They're very clear and concise tutorials, I actually followed it a few months ago knowing absolutely nothing about root or adb.

Use rage.
Visionary used to be a one click root app. However, it caused problems for some users. The unlockr corrected the issue in the tutorial. You will first gain temproot through visionary, copy files and run some adb commands via desktop, then gain permroot and s-off again through visionary. Its really easy, all you have to do is copy him. I did it myself in november and my phone still runs flawlessly.

If you use Rage (the method I linked to earlier), you won't need to downgrade. Just type in the commands using ADB and Terminal Emulator and flash ClockworkMod Recovery through ROM Manager and you're good to go.
See I want to do it thatf way but I can't figure out ADB I'm stuck at one part at on that noob guide. :/ I can't figure out how to use the cd command to go to the file wwith adb on it which is on my desktop ....(using the fast method for windows xp). Then I tried the other way and I could never get the path part right.

If you haven't already figured out the adb problem, no, you don't have to downgrade to use the other method. But then, I don't know what would happen if you switch from one rooting method to another. Especially when you're right in the middle of it xP
