[Q] Poor battery life.. being reading a lot of threads but.. - Desire General

I have been reading of a lot of threads about how to save battery life..
here's what I done:
1. gps off
2. auto kill w/ advanced task killer
3. screen brightness at low
4. sleep screen after 15 seconds
I have got my desire for a few months and battery life has been bugging me. I understand that modern big touchscreen will drain the battery as compared to normal phones. Using a custom rooted rom atm.
I unplugged the phone at 12:00 with data on (push, auto-sync, etc), when i woke up at 7:00, I'm getting 73% of battery life. Charged it to full again and unplugged it at 8:30. My phone the phone shutdown by itself at 21:30. It's a little bit more than 13 hours of battery.
Is it me or everyone else is getting the same number? I just installed setcpu and see how it goes.. please tell me if there's any other way to preserve more battery!

I think it partly depends on which ROM you are using. I am currently using a new ROM (which I LOVE) but I've noticed that my battery life has decreased quite a bit. It can be kind of a trade off. I love the ROM so much that I'm not going to change it but it works ok for me because most of the time, I am somewhere where I can charge my phone if necessary.
Just found this thread which might help. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755903&highlight=battery+usage I'm going to try it and see if it helps.

- ROM?
- Display on time?
- Cell/WiFi on time?
- Chrome2Phone (or similar) running?
- Any battery widgets running?
- Any social networking apps/widgets running?
-----------------------------------
- HTC Desire via XDA App -

..overall the battery lifetime is not as good as we would like it - but its a general smart phone problem - anyway I charge my device once per day...who cares?

What's the average battery life with cellular data on?

My battery life is also quite shocking, also lasts for approximatly 13 hours under normal use, but if it is in standby then I'd say it lasts for 20 hours.
under normal use:
no 3/2g mode, just wifi
leedroid 2.2a
occasional games
occasional call (like 1 in 10 hours)
1~2 messages
btw you can find display on time in 設定->關於手機->電池->喚醒時間

and your current battery status?
(sorry I type faster in Eng XD been away from TW for like 9 years now...wanna go back TT)

Do a full typical usage discharge from full to near off and see what the battery stats in that section read for Display, Cell, Phone idle and anything other (tap each one for hours and percentage).

I'm not familiar with the app but I am with FB and such and their widgets. Any app/widget polling at high frequencies like per second or per minute produces a high additional average drain which cuts runtimes, especially standby efficiency. That includes monitoring apps.
Do you have the battery widget chosen in Extended Controls, or the auto-brightness?

I can't say because supposedly, mine is well above average. It depends critically on usage and setup, too. 24-42hours with 5-9h display on and WiFi/2G always on is quite the norm on mine. Put to sleep (standby), it doesn't drop 1% until 6-9 hours. There's many many threads every week about this now. And I have many updating widgets and auto syncs running, just nothing to do with social networking since I've completely deleted from my phone.
-----------------------------------
- HTC Desire via XDA App -

19 hours 40 minutes
Standby 35%
Phone idle 32%
Android system 17%
Voice call 5%
Display 5%
Maps 4%
Dialer 2%
I am on 3g/hsdpa

Sorta new to the forum.
Just got me a HTC Desire. Rooted running CM6.0.2
If i baby it, i get maybe 6am-2pm. Heavy use, its done before noon. Ouch
Standby is ok, i left it off the charger last night and I lost 25% over 10.5hrs.
Ive got 1 twitter app on a 5min refresh. Weather is on 1hr. Screeen is down around 15% brightness. setcpu is on 245min, 998max, scaling on demand an a screen off profile of 245.
I have no idea what more I can do to get more then half a day out of it without just not using it lol.
Im pretty new to Android and all this rooting/rom stuff so maybe Ive got something screwy. I also tried a second battery from a friend, no change.

set that friends widget to longer than 5 mins and the weather widget to every 3 or 6 hours. i bet you that will get you alot more time.

Made the switch but cant see it making that much of a change.
Any other suggestions?

Desire Battery Life

I've heard some people say they get 3 days out of their desires and others saying they get just over a day.
This thread it would be great to collect a list of people with desires and their average battery life as well as a list of apps they have installed and widgets on display and maybe the rom they are using.
Just trying to work out
I'm going to collect data and put something up tomorrow - but I noticed last night that my battery went down really quickly when my Alarm went off (using Gentle Alarm) I also confirmed this using JuicePlotter which showed the battery sharply decrease just at the same time in which my alarm was set to go off.
I also noticed that having wifi turned on didnt seem to effect battery life that much...
Yeah my battery lasts really well leaving WI-FI on too. Not sure why others have an issue with it.
My battery will last a day tops turning on from 7.30 and off again around 12am ish
During day I will use Seemic (on manual update) and use FB on net every now and then.
May occasionally go to the Market for Updates.
I only use mobile Network when I need to so I turn off and on when required.
I will play Word Up and Solitaire for 30 -40 mins a day roughly.
Battery % will vary between 65 - 45 by 6.30 pm
Today it is down to 75% at 2.10pm - although I've not played any games today so far.
I bought an X10 and returned it because the battery wouldn't last even a day despite having all kinds of task-killing crap installed.
Then I bought a Desire and had the same problem - 6, maybe 7 hours of battery.
I found a post on some obscure blog that helped me track down the culprit: there are apps that don't let the device go to sleep completely. I had two of them. And Android (at least the HTCs) have a built-in function to see exactly what those processes are:
From the dialer: *#*#INFO#*#*, choose Battery History from the menu and then Partial Wake Usage. Nothing should have more than a tiny fraction of a bar. But on mine, Grooveshark was using 99%. I uninstalled it, tried again a few hours later and saw that Mikandi was using 99%. I uninstalled that, and now I'm getting more than 24 hours of heavy use.
Some apps just don't behave.
Why would Dialer App have such a high network usage?
It shows up as using a lot of network!

Wouldn't the dialer use the network to call people when you dial?
Thanks for the "cheat code" on the hidden menu. Very interesting.
I can sometimes squeeze 2 days out of my battery. I'll only get a day and a half on this charge though because of lots of txting and facebook use.
I found this menu option in Settings > "accounts & sync" > Background Data. I turned this off and seem to get a little more battery.
Changing the brightness down a bit helps, and i'll set the screen timeout to lower as its at 1 minute now. Plus If I use friend stream instead of the facebook widget then it updates when I want to and doesnt keep active.
Least amount of battery time i've had is a day. I never turn my phone off.
I never get a full day out of mine, maybe 8-10 hours max... I have no idea how some people claim 3 days, I'm not exactly a power user!
Stock ROM (not a provider one, just generic) on T-Mobile UK network
Wi-Fi and GPS off
Widgets: Standard Flip Clock, SMS, FriendStream, Stocks (2hr update), Agenda, News (2hr Update)
Market Programmes: K9 Mail (1Hr e-mail updating), ES File Explorer, Shazam, Voice Search, Pkt Ebay, Tricorder, UK TV Guide, GBCoid
In Standby (screen off), not using web, not calling, not texting, not using apps, I lose around 10% per hour, faster if anything at all is on.
Oddly, despite the very poor (for me anyway) standby life, in call life seems really good, I made a call last night for an hour, where phone was in the orange phase when I started and still hadn't gone red at the end...
Pauly
I wanted to try turning background data off but sadly the market does not work when you have this turned off (a warning pops up when you try)

True re the dialer. Was thinking network as on net use.
anyone got background data or mobile data turned off?
if so whats your battery life like?
also anyone tried with 3G on and compared to GSM ONLY?

Well the only app that have a bigger bar is Android System... Is this normal?
Settings ; About phone ; Battery ; Battery use and it will tell you when it was last unplugged and what has been using it.
4h 27m
Cell standby - 45%
Phone idle - 45%
Wifi -7%
Android system - 5%
Display - 2%
Obviously you can see from that I've hardly used it. A few texts, checking email periodically. Display brightness is on full, weather update is set to manual. Only have a few apps installed. Main one being data counter widget.
2000kb wifi
780kb cell.
Oh, and SystemPanel, tells me I have 93%.
Switch off 3g when you don't need it,this can nearly double your standby/idle time ,use a 2g-3g toggle if its a pain.
Juice defender with its plotter can give you very useful info on when your phone is using its battery the most.
On idle with 2g 1% per hour is normal, with 3g 2-4 %.
As soon as that screen goes on start thinking 15-20% per hour!
Most smart phones are the same,my x1 ,touch pro all got caned when I first got them, but a bit of experience and a few tweaks later they were doing 3-4 days.
Also flatten it and fully charge it when switched off helps too.
My battery life is pitiful too, im a pretty light user now ive had time to play with the phone for a while but battery will always need to be put on charge by around 10pm when only unplugged around 7am the same day.
I bought up the partial wake usage list and UID followed by a number is using twice the power of Android System.
Does anyone know what the UID is?
My battery life was rubbish until i updated the radio version to 32.37.00.32U_4.06.00.16_2. I am also using MCR3.1
Before my battery life would be fully discharged within 7 hours. Now i have 1day+ Not too sure as i now have a brodit car mount that charges my phone during my commute.

To update, do you need to root your device? I don't want to root mine, but I want to get the best battery life possible.
I;'m now using the beta version of Juice Defender
and i've disabled always on mobile data
will let u know how i get on
Ok I'm now onto day 2 using the desire with the following settings
Juice Defender Beta with Ultimate Juice
- wifi on all the time when in known location
- APN / WIFI off when screen is off
- APN off between 0:00 and 6:30
Always on Mobile data turned off (via networks)
Removed al unneccesary widgets (using ADW Launcher) - currently not using any widgets that sync content
Gmail set to only sync 1 days worth of content
Calendar Sync turned off
Contact Sync turned off
--- Usage -----
Approx 2 hrs worth of calls
1hr watching MP4 videos
browsing the web approx 30mins
checking marketplace - 10mins
replying to emails (approx 20)

Currently the battery is at 46%
Was 100% on Wednesday 5pm 2nd June 2010
If it makes it through the night I'll be very happy - will report back
im getting somewhere between 38 - 48 hrs on a charge, no task manger installed with wifi and gps enabled.

Stating the obvious, but if you don't use your phone, your battery will last a long time!
Personally I need to use my phone (otherwise why would I have bought it) so have push email running with full Exchange sync 8 till 8, FB & Twitter syncing once an hour, spend a couple of hours a day making calls, connect to WiFi using my iPass account whenever a hotspot is available and spend a lot of time dealing with emails etc.
I put my "less than a day" battery life down to the fact that my screen is on and doing stuff for much of that time.
Of course if I just leave the phone on the desk at the side of me and don't touch it all day, even with push mail and all that sync, if the screen is not turned on much, I get 2 days.
It's the screen that eats the battery. The more it is on, the shorter the time between charges.
Wow I don't understand how you people get such amazing battery life!
I am no noob anymore regarding Android and Smartphone's in general, so I understand most 'hints & tricks' in this thread. But simply for me this does not work.
Some important stuff:
- I ALWAYS have 2G on, never 3G.
- I use wifi at home and in most places I go
- I have almost everything set to 'manual' updating
Ok.
For example my last situation:
I unplugged it at 23.30 yesterday. I used it for a little bit, over wifi. Checking twitter, surfing the web, watching some video's in HTC Flash Player. I went to bed around 02.00, watched some Law & Order that's why it was so late. So before turning off the lights, I turned wifi off. The battery was around 80-85%, from what I remember.
I wake up at 12.00. The battery was still above 50%, that's for sure. I do some facebook, twitter, news, etc. All over wifi.
And now, just before 17.00, my battery was dead (while I almost typed this entire story on my Desire -.- I was pissed). So that means, about 17 hours? Which about 10 hours I slept and the phone was doing nothing, over 2G!
So yeah... and when I read all your story's about 2 days (48 hours) I am really like: WTF
Some more details:
-No live-wallpaper. Just the black 'carbon' one.
-I used to use LauncherPro beta, but battery life was just as bad. Now I am back on HTC Sense. I have some widgets, like the Calander widget, a small music widget, bookmarks widget, etc.
-I tried to find out what uses the most battery while sleeping with that code and it showed Android System. So nothing weird there.
-Again, everything set to MANUAL updating
-ONLY 2G.
-Brightness set to auto.
So really, I think it's my wifi that sucks the battery life out of my Desire. I remember when I went on a trip and was just 'listning' to music, my battery only dropped like 10 to 15% in 3 hours.
-----------
Btw, I remember that this 'some people have great battery life some people don't' story was the same with the HTC HD2. The only different thing there was that I was one of the people with the 'good' battery life. Now I am on the 'losers' team
Any help would be great!

Desire battery observations

I know you guys might be tired of these threads but I thought I might as well post this.
My desire is fairly new(Less than a week) and so far its been good apart from(What I though) battery life. i've been trying to improve it and I think I might have "some" progress.
Currently I'm running DeFrost 4.9 with HAVS @ 1137(4.9a) kernel with the very latest radio, I also use only 2G networks(No 3G here). I got two Gmail accounts but only one has sync(The other one is merely for Google checkout CC purchases), I got one Facebook account set to sync every hour as well as LP Facebook widget also set to sync every hour. I also got FancyWidget syncing weather every 3 hours. Apart from these I got Nimbuzz running 24/7 in background. The battery is calibrated and yesterday I did a complete discharge/recharge.
Now I plugged it off the charger 2 hours ago, it was at 100 according to spare parts. The brightness is at 2%. I did some lite browsing, browsed a bit with Tapatalk Pro and 40 minutes ago went to a market nearby. During my trip to market I had Google Navigation turned on navigating me(During both, the trip to the market and return). Now while making this post the battery is at 81%. Does it sound right?

How much time the display was on? How much time was the GPS on?
Be careful, don't be happy before time. I did the recalibration too, and found that my phone would turn itself off at ~20% remaining battery.

First, in the night put the phone in airplane mode (I dont think u need to check ur facebook )
Second, check if u have useless programs that are using cpu in background, if is this the case UNINSTALL that program and CONTACT the developer. We dont need to kill those kinds of app, we just have to UNINSTALL if an app doesn't work properly, untill the developer will fix it. If all people will do like me, the market will full of great apps
I don't think I have any useless stuff running in the background. All I got are 2 widgets(Facebook and Twitter) syncing every 1 hour and 3 hours respectively, one Fancy Widget fetching weather and Gmail push for one account. Is their a way I can check all the services running in the BG?
EDIT : Forgot to mention Nimbuzz running 24/7.

I won't rehash all of what has been heavily discussed by now in much greater depth, like in the FroYo Battery Usage thread. But auto sync with such social applications and you set yourself up for low battery runtime to begin with. Especially with a constant polling IM and/or battery widget running too. Don't expect much.
Anyway, I don't use them but weather, stocks, 5 mail accounts and news is set to auto-sync every 15 minutes and WiFi is always running if available. Last discharge as soon as I connected charger ended at:

Hmm Wi-Fi + Nimbuzz really screws up the battery . Last night I turned off the Wi-Fi and slept for 8 hours. I had 46% battery before and in the morning I had 40%. I also have disabled Auto-sync for Twitter/Facebook widget and Facebook app. Now the only running services I got are Gmail push, FancyWidget weather and Nimbuzz.

How did you manage to get such good battery life? Your phone lasted for over a 32 hours period which included 6 hours of display. And that too with stocks and News syncing every 15 minutes. Does Nimbuzz really screw you that much?

Well now datz some good battery. Which ROM are you using? Which Radio are you using?
I don't have any account/social networking syncing. Don't use wifi more than 20 mins a day. Brightness 20%. NO GPS. No Bluetooth. No stupid application sucking battery's power. If my screen is off I lose about 3-4% for a period of 5 hours, so no app sucking the battery in the sleep mode.
If i use EDGE when the battery is Full for about an hour I get battery drain of 20%
Would love to know more details on which ROM, Radio and your settings.
OK. There's not much I can say except what other guys who know better than me said here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743172
It's all usage/config/settings dependent. There's no secret sauce. Some setups and usages last shorter than others, yet further, some drastically shorter.
Firstly, I don't change something working well nor move from a setup until I've worked with it the best I could. The ROM I use daily is HTC 2.2 with root. The radio is some old one that worked perfect for me: 32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20. I can give you some details so you can characterize the battery performance on mine better.
- H.264 sub 2.5Mbps 800*480 video playback at 18% brightness lasts 5.5-6.5h with about 15% remaining. This has been repeated more than 50 times since March.
- My average runtime used to be 13-18h since March but I knew something was wrong and drawing more juice than necessary. I kept looking (mainly at the logs). It took me months to figure out it was a few things including my build.prop WiFi/cell settings, A2SD+, my GMail install, battery widgets, eBuddy, Titanium Backup, Chrome2Phone, Pure Calendar/Grid widgets and my 3G baseband reception. Some app versions were buggy and constantly polling and returning random errors in the background. I had to eliminate them one by one.
I rectified such problems entirely and removed all the unnecessary apps installed which I rarely used. I had to revert back to FroYos A2SD with the install location mod. That took me to todays battery runtime which I'm very happy with. Chrome2Phone for instance could stay installed and be disconnected when not in use to avoid the large background drain it caused.
- I run personalized colour calibration with lowered overall luminance but more red and green with less blue sub-pixel luminance. Very near D6500 whites. I also keep most apps and my homescreens dark when and where possible. I disable button LEDs through a widget when not required (much).
- 24-39h is the norm for me in typical usage. Among much else that always includes a few short calls, some YouTube, some StreetView, some TapeMachine (audio record), some Scan2PDF, some Aldiko, some Chrome2Phone and Fox2Phone, some Tapatalk browsing, some XDA app browsing, some Quick App Clean Cache, some SpringPad, some Adobe PDF, max 15mins of MP3 playback, heavy net and NewsRoom browsing, 150-250 emails and messages and constant sync with what I listed priorly. Always 2G though, and whenever I reach areas I know have bad or no reception (causing high drain) that I'll be staying at for more than 10mins, I disable cell (frequently). I've nurtured the habit of putting the phone in standby after every use too.
- 6-9.5h display on aggregate is the norm for me. I use lowest brightness possible or 18% typically. 50% in very bright, direct summer sunlight. Just now the battery ran out after 26 hours with 9.2h display on, 13.5h cell on and 22h WiFi on.
- I have apps I consider junk removed: Facebook, Footprints, etc. The lot. So no sync or auto running for them or their widgets in the background. I also removed the base GMail because logs showed me it carried on running sync all the time even when not set to. I forced the latest GMail APK in and it has no such problems. I removed all battery widgets installed except one since they drain heavily.
- Heavy usage like GPS, lengthy calls, video recording and playback cuts the runtime down drastically which should be conspicuous. I can drain the battery fully in 5h with everything max and running.

Thats some damn battery life you have there. You are on a Sense ROM? Do you actually use Sense? If so you're either exaggerating or I'm a total fool(I'd prefer the latter).
I've been trying to fine tune the battery, currently I'm using DeFroST 4.9 with SVS 998Mhz @ 1275mv kernel with 17_2 radio. Re-calibrated the battery yesterday and compiled a custom wi-fi module containing fixes for sleep disconnection today morning.
I left it at night around 3 AM with 99% battery, turned off the Wi-Fi/EDGE but kept mobile on. In the morning(Around 9:30AM) I was at around 91%. Gave it a quick charge to 100 till around 11:15 AM. Disconnected it and from 11:20 to about 11:40/45 AM I had quite a heavy chat session over Nimbuzz with my friend. My battery went from 100 to 94% in that time. After that I pretty much left it, picked it up to check a mail once or twice and sent a few messages over Nimbuzz. It is 1:40AM now and I'm down to 89%. All of this was over Wi-Fi, GPS off, Bluetooth off, no tethering no nothing. I got no Facebook/Twitter auto-sync. Only FancyWidget(every 3 hours) and Gmail Push. Brightness is at 2%(Although even then it is a bit bright, maybe it is just me).
I am using Extended control widget to see the power percentage.

Whoa ! Amazing post there. This should keep me occupied for quite some time to figure out what the heck is going on with my battery. The battery life what you are getting is really good and that is what everybody should get provided they figure out what the heck is sucking their battery that bad. Lotsa things and apps you have said drains the battery is on my phone and I haven't even started looking at logs in detail. Itz been only couple of weeks since I have this phone so I'll defn start looking into this issue.
Few questions
1. What issues did you have with your build.prop?
2. What battery widget are your currently using ?
3. You have mentioned A2SD+ also is a battery drain, was it a particular ROM's implementation of A2SD+ or older version of A2SD+ or A2SD+ in general causes battery drain ? Would be great if you could link us to the location mod
OK, It is 7:05 PM now and I am down to 70%. Nimbuzz was on all the time along with Wi-Fi(Although I don't know what happened but it switched to EDGE as if it lost Wi-Fi connectivity, Wi-Fi wasn't disabled, just disconnected). And I pretty much haven't touched it since 1:40 PM. Not as good as I hoped, but still kind of decent.
And my Wi-Fi strength isn't that great either, it is either 1 or 2 bar out of 4.
Well, I haven't done any such kernel modifications intentionally. Never had any need to either. 14.5h since last charge now, cell on 5h, WiFi on 12.5h, display on 2h and 76% remaining (actually, those stats were collected and written an hour back). The Desire display has been verified to consume at least 70% of the total device power when the screen is on. So you can't get more hours with display on if it didn't run as such.
It's HTCs ROM so of course it is using Sense. I can't do without most HTC added goods in Sense. Let alone the Mail, Bookmarks, Calendar, Stocks, Copy/Paste, Lookup, Clock, Gallery and Camera apps and widgets. The widgets I depend on work well only on the HTC ROMs I've tried. The missed Sense goodness combined with the bugs and problems I had on AOSP ROMs were extremely problematic so I moved back. Even my video recording and native playback is much better on this ROM.
To be frank, you've hardly had the phone so you'll learn much more yet. And it comes through search->reading->experimenting first. 1-2 weeks is too little for even figuring out most of the basics, unless you're moving from a similar phone and OS. For one, you'll need to actually read the linked thread to see what many observed and experienced. It took me and many others 6 months to learn things and get to this stage. Every other day I was testing and monitoring. But be aware that you can't, for instance, have the exact same setup and usage as me to have the same resultant battery life.
Had you read the linked thread you'd also be aware by now that bugs were filed for inaccurate % readings by Androids Battery Usage section. However, its time tracking was reliable in my testing.
- On your typical full discharge, how much time and % is listed under Display on?
- And for cell?
- Which A2SD are you using?
- Static wallpaper/color?
- Animation settings?
- Location on?
- Network location errors in logcat?
- Cell network chosen auto or manual?
- Did you mention all the widgets on all homescreens?
- OSMonitor/CurrentWidget values in idle screen on and idle screen off?
I use EC and SwitchPro widgets too but their battery widgets (like you mentioned) are known as ones with high consistent drain. The EC dev also corroborated this in its thread under the Themes section.
The 'idle' drops you get don't make sense to me unless there's fundamental hardware/software activity you haven't properly monitored and logged. Even kernel and I/O usage in the background. You'd be surprised at the difference one buggy underlying feature can make.

If you're actually asking those questions, here goes. Note, I am at 66% and the time is 8:56PM. And after this I'm gonna nandroid this ROM and try SuperVillainHD just for the kicks. Also, can it be that since the phone is relatively new, the battery is not up to its full potential?
Q1, 2) Battery usage is :
Display: 35% (35m 37s)
Wi-Fi: 20% (9h 44m 22s)
Cell standby : 15% (9h 44m 22s)
Phone idle: 14% (9h 9m 42s)
Android system: 6% (CPU Total: 9m 35s, CPU Foreground: 27s, Data sent: 7.82KB, Date received: 11.38KB)
Nimbuzz: 4% (CPU Total: 6m 46s, CPU Foreground: 2m 54s, Data sent: 298KB, Data received: 851KB)
Android OS: 3% (4m 1s)
Voice calls: 2% (45s)
Q3) I'm using DeFroST ROM with A2SD+
Q4) Yes, I'm using a static wallpaper
Q5) Animations is set to : All animations
Q6) GPS is disabled, if that is what you mean.
Q7) How can I check this and what would it show?
Q8) Didn't touch this, so I'm presuming Auto.
Q9) I'm not sure, so here goes. I got a Twitter widget, Facebook widget, both are set for manual syncing. Got FancyWidget syncing every 3 hours and several harmless icons. I got 3 bars of Extended Control widget and a google search widget
Q10) I don't have those, are they available in market? Do they consume battery?

I'll have to open the file for that to check exactly the changes I made. I didn't really follow anyone, just went off my own understanding and intuition. If I try to access the dir or open the file whilst the phone is not in Recovery, it'll force a reboot so I'll give more details later on this when I'm near a PC.

FroYos A2SD was nice but I needed much more space and was trying A2SD+ with various ROMs as well as manual use on HTC ROMs. Endless problems such as very remarked, consistent sluggishness in basic functioning, total boot and app load slowness, including high, persistent background CPU and IO loads and very poor SD card transfers over USB and WiFi made me sack it. I lost a class 4 16GB Kingston SD card with errors inside 2 months. I transfer 2-4GB in/out daily and many transfers started failing. Widgets bugged out frequently when you needed them most and had to be all re-setup. Video record and playback became dis-able. The phone became useless except as a toy. That's not what I bought it for but as a helpful companion. I eliminated everything in question. It was simply the SD card [over]use compared to internal memory. I simply typed the command through adb but:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=778738
Even though I used this, I still have select applications not on the SD card upon learning that they worked far more consistently and properly with lower power and CPU usage when using internal memory. Trial, observant monitoring, and error.

[Q] HTC Desire - YOUR average battery performance

Hi there,
I'd love to hear about your battery performance. It seems to differ so much between useres that it's really strange. Maybe we can also find out which apps/widgets are too heavy on the battery.
I''m currently using SGBS Rom 2.5 stock.
My average performance is barely a day with moderate use.
I'm using:
- two E-Mail accounts, one with push
- HTC friendstream widget
- HTC google calender widget
- Google News widget
- display brightness set to the halfpoint
- some hours of WLAN a day, always on with mobile internet
- a little surfing, SMS
that's it. With this user behavior I now got about 25 hours out of my batter. Display is 28%, Phone inactivity is 21%, standby is 16%, WLAN is 13%, Mail is 11%, Phone is 7%, calls are 4%, Android OS is 3%.
I deactivated most of the syncs, push is active for my main active E-Mail, the other one is every 15 minutes. Rest is "once per day" or not at all, HTC sync is deactivated.
Is this performance normal? Any ideas? I'd say it's ok but there are people out there claiming they get 48 to 72 hours out of their phone with moderate use. That's quite a difference.
Thank you!
Battery performance differs from user to user and rom to rom. Some roms will run better than other roms and it also depends on what the user has installed on their phone. If you have a fair amount of widgets or just stuff that runs in the background then your battery life will be worse than other people's. CPU frequencies and governors can also come into account.
So, what's the best way to find out what influences your battery life most? I know there are those stats which I posted but they really don't help that much, do they?
The stats you gave fluctuate too much. The main thing is to keep an eye on your apps. See which apps are running in the background, see how much memory they're using. Widgets are another thing to be careful of. I don't use widgets, just the one since I'm on sense, but having lots can impact battery life. You can try and use an auto run app which allows you to stop apps automatically running on startup.
Try not to use live wallpapers and screen brightness.
Punched in..
I charge it every 24 hours on the average - goes from 100% to 30%. A few phone calls, some emails. Not heavy on messages. Some Internet once in a while. Needs an extra recharge on days when GMaps or GPS or Angry Birds come into play.
Have seen some improvement from Stock Froyo HTC ROM to (over the last week or so) AOSP (Redux2 Test Builds).
Ok then, new stats. I got about 10 hours now with an active time of almost 2 hours and I'm a 70%. Had a short phone call, emails, that's it. Rest was just idling over night.
Main battery culprits at the moment:
Mail 30%
WLAN 19%
Standby 14%
Phone inactivity 13%
Display 11%
Calls 8%
Phone 4%
Android OS 3%
My App Stats:
Options 15MB
Maps 6MB
Calender 9MB
CSPeopleSyncsService 3,9MB (?? no idea what that is)
Google Services 8,9MB (no idea either)
Mail (5,4MB)
Sense 4,3 MB
Market 3,7MB
Mail (again) 6,6MB
152 in use, about 200 free.
Widgets:
Calender
Friendstream
Weatherclock
Google News
Any idea?
So first report regarding the new radio. It definitly works fine with SGBS, can't say yet if batter life really is better:
I'm now down to 68% after 15hours. At least 8 hours of those are flight mode over night. WLAN was active the whole time. Display is the main battery culprit, Telephone "inactive" is right next to it. Then WLAN with about 18%, then Handset standby with 16%.
So I obiously don't know what thelephone "inactive" means, that's still pretty high. But I think handset standby is a little lower. So maybe the radio helped with that?
BTW, I used the music player yesterday for about 40 minutes. And had a short GPS test (works fine with new radio) so I guess 70% after 15 hours is ok...

So what kind of battery life are you all getting?
Got to go out and about yesterday so I used my phone pretty moderately.

Good enough!
Completed my first charge-discharge cycle (100% to 1%) on ZL. Standby drain is negligible which is pretty good! Here is the screenshot below (5hrs plus screen on time is good with moderate use = approx 1hr 3G data browsing, 40 min calling, 1hrs music, 45min hd videos, browsing pics, camera use, play store etc.)
All stock rom (not rooted) build 10.1.A.1.350. I haven't had time to update it, will do it tonight.
P.S - Screen brightness set at 30% with adapt to light checked. Stamina mode off.

Update
Hello everyone! Having posted the battery life report about 10 days back, I thought it's about time for an update on the battery life after few charge-discharge cycles. I am consistently getting 4.5 to 5.25 hrs of screen on time with about a day's standby with moderate use (no gaming). I don't know why many people @ XZ forums are complaining about battery life. Below are few screenshots showing the last cycle (100% to 1%) of battery use.
I managed 5hrs &11min screen time with 30+ hrs of standby with stamina & low battery mode on, screen @ 30% brightness with adapt to light checked. It includes:
- 3.5hrs of wi-fi (web browsing via dolphin, google play, app updates, facebook, gmail, email etc.)
- 1 hr of calling (on 3G network)
- 1 hr album viewing (including camera use)
- 30 min music playback (via earphones) with screen off
- 20 min hd video playback
- 10 text messages
I noticed that I get better browsing time with dolphin than the default chrome, and with Wi-Fi use than with 3G data. I could manage only about 2 hrs 40 min of web if using 3G data instead of wifi (with similar usage as above).
Currently on stock sony rom (build 10.1.A.1.434 India), with stock kernel, stock BL (locked), not rooted. I've only disabled a few sony apps & bloatware which I don't use. No battery tweak or mod used other than mentioned above.

Mediaserver is chewing up too much battery. If you are using a MicroSD card that has been passed among multiple phones, it may be a good time to clean it out and simplify your folder structures. Cards with too much clutter and junk data can cause Mediaserver to run excessively.

I ended up doing a factory reset, because my notification led was not working. That solved the media server using too much battery, really strange...anyway it's solved now.
Cool thanks for the heads up.
Hi Guys,
I would like to ask how much on the average does your media server consume in terms of battery life.
Thanks

Anyone installed and checked Better Battery Stats? I notice that the biggest kernel wakelock is from msm_hsic_host. I'm seeing around 17%. The N4 forums have several posts about this (unsurprising as same SOC) and it seems to be concerning modem handoff from the qualcomm chip. Not sure if this is caused by heavy network usage from an app I’ve installed or whether it’s just symptomatic of having an external modem to the SOC.
What are other people seeing under kernel wakelocks?
The batt life is quite good speaking from previous note owner. With stock rom Iv managed to get 1day yesterday with stamina on, normal phone calls, lil bit of youtube, google, poweramp and stuffs... Inshort normal usage. And today im trying to get it again, or maybe more.

Screen on time (SoT) is half of what it used to be

Hey XDA!
I come from an around 2 years-old Nexus 4 and SoT there wasn't usually able to get above 3 hours. I bought my Nexus 5X around 5 months ago and the first month or weeks I had 5-6 hours of SoT (extremely pleased)! I was running stock & unrooted at this point.
Recently, however, I have been getting no more than 3 hours of SoT again. I rooted and decrypted my phone exactly 1 week after receiving it and I have been using Chorma since then.
My set-up and usage is listed below. Please tell me if this is what everybody gets or I should really look for a fix.
Specifications:
ROM: Chroma ROM (latest)
Kernel: Franco Kernel R5 (latest)
Kernel setup: VomerTweaks for max. battery (which by the way made no difference at all)
Apps that might be battery killers: Facebook, Messanger, Snapchat, Skype (all just running in background)
Wakelocks: none
Usage:
I charge it overnight. I wake up and go to school with 100%. I have Wi-Fi on ALL THE TIME (could it be the big problem?). I occasionally check my phone for notifications, browse a bit between classes, with zero gaming and no heavy usage whatsoever.
Thank you!
if you have scan for wifi ON in location settings.. turn that off
Look for a fix - my stock unrooted Nexus 5x averages overall 13-14%/hr drain screen on and 1-2%/hr screen off (so with heavy use 6-7 hrs SOT is achievable). Wifi is off when away from home but background scanning is on (my automation app uses presence of certain SSIDs as a location proxy for work etc). Location services are on Battery Saving by default. Adaptive brightness.

Dont charge it overnight, its bad for the phone and the charger. Use naptime by franco and enforce doze settings. Apply some governor tweaks that suits your usage.

Didn't change a thing. I am proceeding with a full wipe now.
If your battery was good and then became bad we can assume something you changed in that time is the cause. Most commonly one or more of the apps you installed, specifically any that run as background services as seen in settings > Developer options > running services.
Otherwise it could possibly be related to a setting such as if you enabled smartlocks or trusted voice during that time, etc.
Lastly your usage could have changed. Were you using the device mostly at home before and now you're using at school? Large buildings such as schools and work places can often block signals and cause the phone to work over time to perform even basic tasks like syncing emails. My average SoT drops from about 5 to about 2 hours in my workplace for instance, and the graph is mostly green and I have plenty of "bars" but those don't tell the whole story.

I have no services running. I am giving a plain stock install (literally zero apps) and CyanogenMod as well a try now. My usage didn't change a bit for this whole year so I have no clue. Could I have damaged my battery from too much flashing?

Look for a fix - my stock unrooted Nexus 5x averages overall 13-14%/hr drain screen on and 1-2%/hr screen off (so with heavy use 6-7 hrs SOT is achievable). Wifi is off when away from home but background scanning is on (my automation app uses presence of certain SSIDs as a location proxy for work etc). Location services are on Battery Saving by default. Adaptive brightness.

How the f is this possible? I get 25% drain in 1 hour of SoT. Adaptive off, sync off, location off, LTE on, screen on 25%. I can maybe get 4 h sot with latest 6.0.1 update. Unrooted, full stock, bought the phone 3 days ago Do I have a bad batch or what?
