microsoft silverlight on android (i.e. moonlight)? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. I thought of trying to watch a netflix movie on the phone. Used dolphin browser on desktop mode and it got me to the play screen, but then netflix told me I needed silverlight...i clicked to download that and of course I get a .exe file.
I searched and did not see an apk for silverlight...is there anything similar that will trigger playback of media that requires silverlight?
Or maybe better but highly doubtful, is there a release of silverlight for android?
If no to the above, anybody working on a fix for this? Got hulu working, now let's get netflix going!
Swyped from my HTC Evo 4G on the MetroPCS 1X network!

Quite simple, nope. Microsoft claims Silverlight is too big for Android (and given that it's a Microsoft POS... Yeah, I'm inclined to agree).
Netflix has said they're going to be coming out with an Android app "soon," since they released iPad and iPhone apps.

and there is no way to get at the stream directly from outside the silverlight environment with an app similar to the hulu app?
I know netflix hired an android dev recently but I wonder how long the turnaround time will be for the app...

Where is this Hulu app?? I cannot find it..

its under themes & apps a page or two in...
what about moonlight? I installed the sdk and saw a demo app that played a silverlight video. how come noone has developed this further?!

Unfortunately, no, you can't get it outside of Silverlight. Silverlight is required for the DRM that Netflix uses to prevent you from downloading movies (a la YouTube). The sole exception is the devices which have Netflix support (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, etc.) which in turn have their own strong DRM, and encrypt the stream.

makes sense.
damn I guess we're stuck until the app gets released...whenever that is!

Where is this app? I looked when it was mentioned but didn't see it. Does it actually work?

I call BS, no one from Microsoft said this. SL is one the main programming languages in Windows Phone 7 (I've been a SL dev since version 1.1 alpha) and runs on pretty comparable Android hardware just fine.
It's a simple decision to not support Linux. SL supports the Mac and Windows platform and pays licenses for every copy downloaded because of some commercial media codecs they're using in the runtime. Linux support has been relegated to Novel who support Silverlight through the Mono/Moonlight project, and they provide their own codec alternatives to get around the licensing issues.
Silverlight is a very fast moving tech, in the last 3 major releases, an average 8 out of 10 top developer requested features were implemented by the Silverlight teams at Microsoft. Right now, the #1 requested feature for the next version, by far, is greater platform support:
http://dotnet.uservoice.com/forums/4325-silverlight-feature-suggestions
In the old Windows Mobile world Skyfire was a way to view full Flash and Silverlight content, but alas their Android version currently doesn't support this.

Greg Peters, of Netflix, announced that select android phones will be getting Netflix streaming early next year. It's "select" because the android platform does not have a common DRM solution, and Netflix's content providers require it in order to allow streaming media. The "select" phones have not been announced, and Greg Peters said that they unfortunately have to work with manufacturers on a phone by phone basis in order to get the required DRM.
All I know is, if you have Sprint TV, which you should if you have an Evo (I have an Epic myself), Sprint's very own version of DRM is baked in. If Netflix has been talking to Samsung and Sprint to get instant streaming on the Sprint Android phones, we may already have what we need in order to get it (when it finally comes out, that is).

I'm just mad that WP7 had Netflix at launch. On another note iPhone's get all the love and priority. That's one thing I miss about my iPhone, the apps.
I'm thinking of buying an iPod Touch and using that for Netflix via Wifi Tether. I talk to a lot of Netflix higher ups and never get a chance to ask them about it.

Looks like the Mono/Moonlight team are working on porting Moonlight to Android phones. They had a demo at Mix11 (I'd link you to the blog post I just saw about it, but I guess I need to post more often to be allowed to link to outside sources).
Just Google for "jeffrey stedfast moonlight android" and it should be the first match.

Mono developers were laid off... no more .net for linux for a long while...

Do we have moonlight already on Android?

Netflix

Has any one figured out how to get netflix to stream with one of the browsers on TP2.
Haven't tried anything with this on the TP2 yet, but for this to work you would need at least two things to start:
1. An older Netflix account that still uses the Flash player rather than the Silverlight player.
2. Flash working in Opera - or just use Skyfire which has Flash support built in.
On a related note, one nice thing that you can use on the TP2 is this app from Microsoft for managing your Netflix queue:

Someone could get creative and port the Roku GPL netflix player code...
The source code is at Roku's site under help section, GPL resources.

Windows Phone 7 runs Silverlight 2 for web apps.

I made some interesting discoveries while trying to get the Windows Phone emulator to load our HD Radio and TV services on the device…
The first is Silverlight version 2 is the default version for the OS and it makes all the apps work, however I see something different from Silverlight 2.
It supports no problem smooth streaming and progressive download, however when it comes to broadcast or on demand streaming it just says “error 40001”
I did however some testing… and it handles Microsoft® VC1 HD with no problems… it was a little shocking to see that but well it works…
However since all our TV services have 5.1 audio it behaves just like the old windows mobile, no sound at all...
I am uploading a test site so you can check it out and try to figure out why it just won’t take the broadcast or on demand settings.
The site is not up but the url to test it is:

[Q] Better Setup for Gamecube/Dreamcast

I've been using RDP client to play Gamecube and Dreamcast games on my XPlay for some time now.
I use the usual setup (emulating through Dolphin 3.0 and NullDC r136) and hit continuous speeds of around 32-34FPS with smooth audio (without root and overclock it will only hits 24-28FPS).
There's only 2 problem i have with this setup:
1. RDP Client - which doesn't seem to support a "fill screen" or "stretch to fit" option to display the entire windows screen on my Xplay. Basicly, part of the game i'm playing can only be viewed if i scroll up or down on the Xplay screen.
2. Full control support - RDP Client now supports more inputs but more for fiddling around on Window itself and not for gaming.
Does anyone have a more compatible setup then the one im currently using?
Personally, i think if a small program similar to xPadder was implemented into RDP Client which ran the controls separately through a bluetooth connection, we would have one hell of a way to play stronger consoles on Android (At home).
I understand that many consider this setup as useless because you have to be within your WiFi area to use it. But when it comes down to it, i personally dont have time to play games when i'm out and about. Especially game that take longer then a 15min train ride to the city.
I would so much prefer laying on the couch of an afternoon and play F-Zero GX or have a few round of Soul Calibur before bed.
But each to their own i guess.
Anyway if anyone know a better setup whilst keeping current FPS or is considering developing a dedicated Gaming RDP Client app for Android. let me know.
Cheers.
If you can only play at home on WiFi, why can't you play directly on the device that you are remoting into? Doing it over WiFi only adds latency.
Obviously, OnLive perfected it, but they have no incentive to give us our own server.
is this a real emu for dreamcast ?? on the xperia play ?
where can i get it please ?

No its just using the emulator on the PC and transferring the video.

The whole point to this setup (for me) is so i don't have to be sitting at my desk to play GC and DC. I thought i explained that in the 1st post
"I would so much prefer laying on the couch of an afternoon and play F-Zero GX or have a few rounds of Soul Calibur before bed."
I have no issue of Latency with the setup i have. Once again, that was in the 1st post
"hit continuous speeds of around 32-34FPS with smooth audio"
This post was a question in regards to alternative setups similar to this that people may be running. OR any projects i may have missed in the development of a dedicated RDP Client optimized for game streaming.
I have to admit that I was very excited to give the whole RDP to Dolphin thing a go. I came across the same issues that you have.
If you increase the render size of the frame you will drop frame rate. Chances are that you are using a low resolution on the host machine. If you change you game to full screen and change your RDP client setting to match you phone you will probably get a terrible frame rate.
There are no analog controls for the games that require them.
All in all I have opted to using onlive. I understand the need to play your own games, but I think the previous poster is right. They put Crazy Taxi in onlive and it plays great.

Remoteplay on PSVita - possible on Play?

Yesterday I dedicated my evening to getting Final Fantasy 12 to play on my Android. Success came in the form of:
XDarkMario's ICS Rom
Kainy remote viewing app
Joystick Center 6 (and touchpad addon)
Kainy on PC
PCSX2
I'm happy to post more information about this setup, which I had working very pleasingly, but this morning various tech sites are reporting that a user called Digitalarts001 has a remote client up and running (which was demoed playing Skyrim) using software he/she built on the Playstation Mobile SDK.
So, my question is, what steps are needed to port that across to the Xperia Play?
could you host a video of this stuff running? O_O i have kainy but it runs quite slowly. I tried it with oblivion and skyrim.

Yep, as soon as I find my 2nd Android I'll film it. I had it running over my local network, not tried it beyond that. The frame rate was acceptable, lag comparable to Onlive but the image slightly washed out. Still, FF12 in bed!
Here is a short clip demonstrating FF12 streaming to the Xperia Play

Disappointing apps?

Has anybody else been disappointed by the App offerings on the FireTV so far? A big thing for me is the continued lack of an update to the WatchESPN app with support for the SEC Network & Longhorn Network. What is taking them so long on the FireTV. Roku & AppleTV have both already been updated the same as the standard Google Play app. Yes, I know I can sideload that version, but then I have to use a mouse to navigate. It seems like Amazon is still kind of lacking in the content department on this thing........and that's why I'm glad to have root. XBMC/KODI alone makes the hardware worth it.

I don't have a problem with the amount of Apps that work with the AFTV. Sure, i wish I had more that worked, so I get on the case of the people putting apps out. What the problem is to me, is most companies don't care about the set top boxes when they make their phone & tablet apps. So I reach out to them. For instances, the UFC app is Portrait when it begins, doesn't work on the AFTV. I've been sending emails to them asking for them to support Landscape mode at the start, so it's compatible with set top boxes, like the AFTV.
You want the ESPN app? Start bothering whom ever makes it to support the AFTV. That is the only way you'll probably get it faster. In fact, I suggest anyone who has an AFTV and wants a certain app to work to contact the publisher/developer on it. The more of us that do it, the better the chances they might get coding.
Already has it but not up-to-date......
Well the problem with the WatchESPN app is that it's already available on the AFTV, but the AFTV version is older than the current standard version for Android. I've been following this thread here over on the Android Central Forums, and it looks like Amazon has said they have received the updated version of the app from ESPN and are "optimizing it for the FireTV"......but it looks like that was back in August. The complaint here is, why does it take them over 2 months to update the AFTV version of the app. The WatchESPN app is also available on AppleTV & Roku, & from what I have read, those STB devices have the latest features (SEC & Longhorn Networks).
