How to stop Zune converting video?? - Windows Phone 7 General

Does anyone know why Zune software is converting WMV video before syncing with HD7, and how to stop auto conversions?

When in zune collection and music click settings near top right corner and look in there.
There are settings for music to convert if quality higher then XYZ or never convert ut until now I have not found a way to stop video. However if you were to stop it you would not be able to play it. My Zune only converts formats it does not recognise.
It copies with no cnversion m4v, mp4 and wmv.

Yes, no option for video...Is there a way of by-passing Zune and drop files into phones folder?

For now no. Again zune will only play specific formats and if your video is already in it desktop zune will not convert.

Thank You.

m4v and mp4 are converting when i try to sync, is there a way to stop this once start (ie tell it not to sync any more).
why are they converting anyway?

Zune Automatically converts videos to a format that is usable on the phone.
Just because it's an AVI video, that doesn't mean the phone can play that specific codec. Also, some bitrates, etc. may not be supported (not sure on that).
Windows Media Player does the same thing for Windows Mobile 6.x, and even DoubleTwist does the same thing for Android devices.
Also, Zune uses MP4 formats. There is no Windows Media player in Windows Phone 7. It's a Zune HD with a phone.
This is like complaining why iTunes is converting you WMAs to AAC before syncing them to you iPhone... ... ... ...
Media Synching software has been doing this for close to a decade, if not longer.

Bolox a 720p Family guy blue harvest in divx (my own copy) was converted to mp4 but resolution was not lowered.
A 720p family guy something dark side in mp4 was converted to mp4 but resolution was not lowered or audio adjusted.
A stock resolution death race in wmv was at first not recognised by zune but worked ok in WMP and microsoft movie maker as a wmv file. After that zune suddenly recognised it but still converted it to wmv before copying.
A mobile resolution 320x240 family guy seazon 8 in wmv was not converted at all it was saying converting percenteg went to 5% and then suddenly 100% and it was syncing.
There is an issue there with zune not knowing what it does.

What is bolox?
There are different version of the Windows Media codec. That's not telling much. Do you have a list of which WM Codecs the Zune HD/WP7 supports?
Most media players will transcode unsupported formats to a supported format when you sync files to the phone.
Lots of them will also convert pictures to a supported format as well.

Yep right wmv being microsoft code wmv = windows media video yet it still transcodes them. On top of that PC with no extra codecs just what is in win7, plays it so why it would not be the same?
On top of that I compress videos always with the same profile. Some videos get converted some do not.
One more windows live movie maker from windows essentials 2011 has option to save in windows phone format. Which is specific resolutions and codec (mp4) with no ability to change anything in that, unlike other profiles, yet zune still converts that to mp4.
Check your facts before posting. Microsoft introduced those profiles just wp7 release and they do not work.

Ruscik, I am following a similar issue and am trying to push MS into enabling avi containers, but like you mention this issue is much bigger then I initially thought.
Would you please be so kind to raise your concern in these posts:

mp4 files from camera app

hi, i have recorded 3 movie clips with my tytn, i have wm6 installed. i sent this movies to my macbook. now i tried to watch them. no chance, only vlc can play them but without sound. what the hell, why does this codec suck so much? i have tried it in media player, and quicktime in osx. they cant play it. it should be said that quicktime can play mpeg4 files, but what is mp4?
anyone knows what codec i have to install to convert it to another format?
and why ms cant play videos from their own mobile apps?
regards, chief
I have no problems playing mp4 on my PC. I have K-lte codec pack installed but I think ffdshow is the codec being used to play it.
Mp4 should be just seen as a container for the video and audio, like .avi or .mkv. I actually use mp4 to encode my files for my PocketPC and get great quality, the upside is that these files also play on other mobile devices; my girlfriend can play them on her Samsung U600.
You running a MS OS on your Mac?
yes, i have tried it in windows xp, but i have no codec packs installed. i think the problem is, that this is not a normal mp4, the video track is ok, but the audio track is identified as "samr".
wtf is samr?
gg
omg
think the only thing i need is this samr codec for mac. in the apple docs i found the information that quicktime comes with amr support, but i think samr is not amr, so i need this codec, anyone ere who can ell me rom where i can download this?

How do you covert and add ripped dvds to dash?

I have ripped movies from dvds and converted them to mp4 (320 X 240). I then added them to my storage card through windows media player. When I play the movie on my phone using wmp or tcmp, the audio is good but the video is choppy and blurry.
Can anyone please give me advice or point me to a source that may help.

You need DVD wizard............!
I use Clone DVD mobile myself works great. Once you get it installed open it up and click on the + next to other devices. select windows smartphone click next, click the button next to DVD video files and browse to the dvd or Video_TS folder on your hard drive, do any editing there you want or not, click next, click next again, under resolution select 320x240, under enter file name to write click the button and browse to where you want to save the output file, under label put the name of the movie, under letterbox try the 3 settings to see which one you like best and hit go. When its done copy it over to your storage card on your phone with active sync explorer and use TCPMP player or Windows Media Player to watch the movie. The finished file size runs from 400mb to 650mb depending on the movie length. I was very impressed with the quality of the movies on my dash. I'll have to give DVD Wizard a try first I've heard about it. Anyways hope this helps.
Converting ripped DVD's to run on a Dash
Hi,
I tried the trial version of Clone DVD Mobile but got terribly out of sync audio/video also a lot of chunky replay. I wrote to their tech support and got pretty good responses from one of their staff, but the end result was that it didn't work. At first we blamed the retention of the original 29.97fps as too heavy for the Dash's meager processor, but even when I edited the ini file to transcode at 15fps the problem continued.
I have copy of Womble Mpeg Video Wizard DVD on my machine which I generally use for editing TV shows I have recorded to my hard drive before burning to DVD-RW's for watching in the living room.
I poked around with it and it would allow me to transcode the .Vob files to mp4 files for an iPod @ 15fps. That worked like a charm. then just number the files sequentially so they play in the right order.
Basically any video editor or transcoding software that will allow you to convert a .vob file (found by exploring the DVD) to an ipod format will work
Good luck
i havent converted one in a while but i use dvd fab decrypter 4 platinum. which has the option to rip file from dvd to mobile. Then if i want to stetch a widescreen image to it fills the whole screen, i use pocket divx encoder
BTW... there's also a dvd fab mobile edition thats available too!

Have not tried it but here's one
GAOTD is offering a free one today...
Not sure how well it is but worth a try.

Youtube works on Windows Phone 7 !!!!

Youtube works on WP7, caught on video
check it out : 1800PocketPC
once you play a video its automatically added to your Music and Video Hub !!!!
works on the youtube mobile version, http://m.youtube.com
Honestly, did anyone expect it NOT to work in WP7?
with out flash , yes many of us did not think it would work initially.
forget youtube....XVID is a supported format out of the box. Now I can do less work at work and look at animes on my phone .

It's not true, unfortunately, according to the official list of codecs supported in the RTM version of WP7. As you will see there, there's no xvid or divx in the list.
Luckily, MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile is listed, and this means that most xvid/divx videos should work as both xvid and divx are variations of this spec.
However, this codec isn't supported in .avi container, the file should be an .mp4 or an m4v.
To add insult to injury, you will not hear any sound in those videos if they have a soundtrack encoded in mp3 or AC3. Only AAC-LC.
To summarize, there's just no way to view a real-life video in WP7 without messing with some sort of convertion. A bit of good news is that it shouldn't require hours, it should be enough to remux the video (put it into another container) and reencode audio (a bit lengthier), and it's better than what you get in Android or iOS, but still far from smooth hassle-free experience.
^ very funny.
I'll have you know that I don't need to convert videos for my phone. Have you seen the specs for new higher end Androids, they support most codecs out the box. The only codec I haven't seen work was for converted dvds or .vob.

I know, that's brought by OEMs. Who can do the same for WP7 if they wish, although that will cost them less as the base things are covered by MS, both in terms of licensing and hardware acceleration built in. Supporting a container is should be much easier than supporting a codec. In this case all you need to do is a demultiplexer, the actual decoders are already there.

Bah, I should have look at that further instead of taking the article at face value.
My 2nd thought was hoping that wasn't final and that wp7 should play everything zune does as well. So I looked up the Zune specs and the avi container isn't there either . Although the xbox 360 has supported xvid in .avi since fall 2007 I believe, so that's a glimmer of hope.
Thanks for clearing that up though. Audio & Video Codecs are a pain in the neck.
Not only codecs are a pain for everyone, but also a very confusing topic, tech blogs mix up things all the time.
The most amazing thing in all this story for me is that .avi is Microsoft's format. Why they don't support it in their products is totally beyond my comprehension.
Oh, and of course this: mp4 is based on Apple's QuickTime video format, while m4v is totally developed by Apple. Go figure.

[Q] No avi Xvid support?

Hi,
I was under the assumption that the wp7 Emulator supported avi containers and xvid files. At least I was hoping for the Windows Phone 7 platform to be able to play these files without conversion.
I stumbled across a review of the Omnia 7 on gsmarena (cant post the link) and apparently these files get transcoded by the zune software into *.mp4
Would anyone with more knowledge shed some light on this. Maybe its an OEM specific feature? I would hate to see the potential of fast file transfer go to waste to transcoding
http://www.wpcentral.com/windows-phone-7-audio-media-codecs
The list on wpcentral is wrong and outdated. The list of supported codecs changed twice since MIX, and the final one doesn't list avi as a supported container.
Things may be not too bad in that MPEG4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile is back in, and that's basically what xvid and divx are. So, in order to watch a real life movie on a WP7, you might just need to remux it (it takes a minute or so).
Thank you very much domineus and vangrieg!! Very informative.
I wonder if MS would bow down eventually and bring back the support for the avi container.
One can dream ;D but 1-2 mins remuxing doesn't sound too bad.

It's just my guess about remuxing, so please dont get too disappointed if I'm wrong.
Re avi, the strangest thing in Earth is that this is Microsoft's own format, and instead they choose to support Apple's ones.
The AVI format is horribly broken by design. The only reason it's still around is the piracy scene and both its idiotic reluctance for change and their desire to maintain legacy support for all these cheap chinese knock-off DVD players that support XviD in AVI.

MP4 playback issues (Green/grey)

Hi all,
So I have an HTC Mozart. I have recently put 2 MP4 files on my phone to watch. I tried to watch them and they play, the audio is fine but the video jumps between (depending on the video) either green blocks or gray blocks which make watching the video impossible as you only see a frame every 3/4 seconds or so.
The video is x264 and the audio is AAC. Any ideas why I am having this problem? How to resolve it? You can see which ROM I am using in my signature.
Does anybody else have this issue?
Thanks
Also mods, I posted this originally in the Mozart section but I think the WP7 section is more appropriate. If you could please close/remove the thread here.
Just be thankful you got any video of any kind working.
I have yet to have anything work.
I have the same situations as you have.
Meanwhile, I have gone through some of the articles about H264 encoding and I have found there is a key parameter "Reframes" which may cause the chip/decoder cannot decode the video correctly. When the value "Reframes" is over 6 (my guess, 5 should be barely acceptable), the limitations of the chip come across and cause decoding errors.
This happens not only to WP7 devices, but also to PSP and possibly other portable devices, though the behaviour may not be showing green/grey blocks but unable to open, etc.
You may check this parameter by opening the file in MPC (Media Player Classic) and click "Properties" after right click when playing.
But there is no way to change the "Reframes" without re-encoding the video, as it is the number of reference frames which is used to calculate the initial frame reproduction.
Hmm, ok. Damn. That sucks. I think you can force Zune to re encode the video files, prolly give that a try. Has always worked fine when Zune re-encodes the avi files to WMV.
Thanks

There is no way to force Zune to re-encode the MP4 H264 video in different "Reframes", and you have to do it with the help of other encoding software.
However, the encoding process is slow even in quad core PCs, so have your time and good luck.
