Swap - Galaxy S I9000 Android Development

Hello and first i have to say, great forum!
Now to my question. Is it possible to create a swap file or partition (like swapper, or???) for my/our galaxy? Then we didn't have the low ram problem !?!
(like my old htc magic )

there is no low ram problem in actual kernels...

Yes, you mean the kernels with 340mb ram. But i mean ram like galaxy tab ob more. ;-)

Swap does no good for this device, as soon as it starts to swap it gets inresponsive because the sdcard is way to slow except maybe you have a class 16 card which for me is out of reach in terms of price...

Do Galaxy Tab appz use much more RAM? Because with a lot of widgets and synch apps I've never ever filled the 304 (now 340) megabytes of RAM to justify the swap...

In simple terms it is the amount of memory apps can use as a virtual machine. Its a matter of opinion as far as larger or smaller sizes. Some preffer larger for data intensive apps and some say it can be a waste. You can play with it and find what suits you phone and setup best for you

So it means memory that can use by any single apps?

I'm curious about this too.
it is the amount of memory any one single app can use at any one point. if you have an app that is a memory hog you can increase the vm heap size and hopefully it will run smother and stop force closings. if you shrink it down then memory intensive apps wont run as well but you can multitask better

HTC one x ram usage

Hi every one , I started this thread to see the amount of ram people are being left with with no apps in the multitasking .the reason is because we get 1gb of ram and I still found my one x doesn't have a lot of ram left , my phone uses between 800 and 900 mbs of ram which is too much I think.I believe it is because of HTC sense 4.0 to be honest .Due to lag when scrolling with live wallpapers , I have a launcher as I believe it runs smoother.sorry for ranting but my question is this: how much ram does your phone use and what launcher do you use ?

Task Manager: If i stop all i have 594mb used and 382mb free.
In setting\apps: 585used, 392 free.

Good information about Android memory management here:
RAM: What it is, how it's used, and why you shouldn't care

Thanks for the responses , I wonder why mine uses so much ram , maybe howany apps I have , let's keep this thread alive
UPDATE:after restarting my phone it had about 300mbs free , that's good
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA Premium HD app
If I kill all tasks I have about 400mb free. With apps running as normal, I have between 150 - 250mb free. I have about 85 apps installed.
Check this out , if you want more RAM free check this thread (I disabled all the bloatware and languages apart from English )

Curious with so much memory usage on hox,
I went in to Samsung showroom, and test SGS3, clear memory on its taksmanager, I've got 390MB afterward.
Didn't much different from my hox, so... theory about sense 4 bloat? debunked, touchwiz also the same.
If you want more maybe you need pruse aosp rom.
Another point is that a phone is NOT like a pc you don't need loads of ram sitting doing nothing. I've no probs sitting with about 190mb left when I'm using my phone. if there's more it just means it's being wasted

Most of the ram used is cached ram which is freed as soon as an app needs it. Normal apps actually use very little ram.
In other words stop worrying about it.
Thanks for the responses

How come you guys have so much free space? I have 378 used and 294 free. I have the NA HOX
I've check from setting>app>running,it says 674mb has been use and 309mb free without task killer.sometimes when I restart my phone, there's will hv 4xxmb available, but never can keep it anyway
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Why do you want lots of free RAM? I would rather have it being used and doing something productive than sitting there idle. That's the point of it, this aint a PC as someone else has said, you need to stop obsessing over something pointless.

Aviable ram?

This is my first post and my english is very poor.
Ok, as i can see the maximun amount of free ram that we can get to our plays is arround 250 mb, but my galaxy tab have the same ram (512mb) and i can get more than 300 mb with bloatwere. So anyone knows why?

Their systems are different. Some system takes up more RAM but some don't. I assume your tab can't make calls and sms, so there will be more RAM available than phone.
I think Xperia Play have less than 512MB of RAM. I have seen other Xperia 2011 models with 512MB (Arc S and Neo) and they have more RAM looking at the app manager.
Obtain 250MB of free memory is an epic win in this phone even with the lightest GB rom.

My partner has an Arc S and the ram on her phone is alot worse than my play, I get around 234mb free ram and her arc S gets around 183mb free and both are on Gb stock
Sent from my R800i
I mean, if you sum the used RAM and the free RAM... Xperia Play has less total RAM than an Arc S. Or at least that's what I remember.
And it's possible to "block" some of this features ( via kernel or whatever ) to have more aviable RAM?

really working trick for hard gaming :D

i found a method to play very well all the game you must to install THIS task killer and active all the root killing option and when you clean the ram you have more than 200mb of ram and the app not restart(i add to excluded list the launcher and swiftkey beacuse when he kill swiftkey then i must select again because the stock keyboard is active) (after play restart the phone for normal use) sms and call work normally when you play super fluid ....i try on CM9, CM10,CM10.1 with :
asphalt 7
real racing 3
subway surf
temple run 2
cm9 is clean with no script ecc ecc
i install a fast reboot program to reboot fastly when i finish to play
NOW YOU CAN FINALLY PLAY WELL!!!
UPDATE
i add screen to see my setup.....
i try on CM10, CM10.1 and CM9 and i see better performance and more free ram on CM9 but i can play well on CM10, CM10.1 too
If you you want the apk......
Download apk here --> http://www.mediafire.com/?dgn20btes32xykz
Enjoy
Thanks for your advice! Starting download Real Racing 3

Maybe it causes of RAM factor, I play rr3 on fresh rc6 really fresh without 3rd party apps. And I got rr3 run smoothly and not freezing.
But, I can't live with no apps on my ROM
edited : of course with custom kernel mod

if the problem is shortage in ram, the real solution is to create swap.
task killers can only clear as much ram there is in the device.
games like real racing 3 and contract killer 2 need more ram than what our Wonder have.
by creating swap at least 256mb, ram is extended so these games do not fc no more.

Need to buy microSD class 10 for best performance for creating swap.

you can also use your internal sd for it if you have space left, i've tried 128mb and contract killer 2 works just fine

UPDATE first post with setup screen
this really works .Thanks
But i cant free soo much memory ^....Even though i use hadidj's kernel (which has 376 mb of ram) I can get only 160-170 mb free. And i kill the swift key too , I excluding the phone.. I would like to free 200mb like you or more on this kernel hehe
It is much better to play subway surfers. Only very rare small lags ^^
R: really working trick for hard gaming
I use stock kernel and I wait to try a hady kernel to try with more ram yes often a small lag persist e rarely the app restart again but I think because I kill first to wait for the super user gain of the program

[Q] Why now cm10.1 RAM only 592 fewer

Please Pardon My English is not very good:victory::victory:
Why xda developers forum cm10.1 kernel support less and less RAM can expand the point is at least as big as you like cm7.2.
I also tried to swap the sd card but the device becomes unstable
It's because the missing RAM is allocated to the camera.
Missing ram is using as a swap memory (memory used for linux temporary files) and other applications to mAke it faster. As for the unstablity files of android 4 is not properly configured for the device
