[Q] XBOX Live Games - Windows Phone 7 General

I have a few questions re. "Xbox live games"
1. What does it actually mean? Does it mean that developers produce a cut down version of games and you download it from the market place or are there already pre-existing games for us to download?
2. Can I see a list of games that are already available for download?
3. How fast is the games list increasing?
4. What sort of quality are you guys (who already have WM 7 phones) seeing
5. What are the cost of games.

basically xbox live games offers the xna framework which is what all xbox live arcade games are written in. This allows inddie developers to make xbox live games work on both xbox console and windows phone by just modifying it slightly to handle the different types of input. this should also mean a lot of the proper titles that we actually pay big bucks for might make its way to windows phone, but who knows about that yet.
can't answer the rest of your questions as i don't have a windows phone yet, but i know that there are quite a few varying degrees of quality of apps. Try looking up the harvest (one of the most pushed games as far for windows phone).

Mass Effect 3 for WP7.
Just kidding, but that'd be awesome. Controls would probably be pretty bad.

All XBox Live Arcade games for WP7 are written in XNA (for the time being), but AFAIK XBox Live Arcade games for the XBox 360 are mostly written in C++ (but XNA is also possible).

XBox Live games are almost always games of major publisher. There are some independent games which will be released through Microsofts own game studio. XNA can be used to write games that run with minimal changes on XBox 360, Windows and Windows Phone 7. Obviously some changes or conditional programming are necessary to address the unique feature set of each platform. For example: Windows uses keyboard and mouse as input devices, XBox 360 uses a controller (Kinect is IIRC not possible with XNA at the moment) and WP7 uses a touchscreen.

The "big bucks" games like Halo won't work on WP7, because these type of games are almost always written in C++ and are optimized for hardware that is far beyond the capabilities of WP7. We will see adaptations of existing franchises, ports of iPhone games and remakes of classical games.

All WP7 games are specifically written for WP7, because only WP7 uses XNA and C# in the mobile space as a development platform. Developers can (and will) use existing media resources like images, animations or sound and can use existing implementations (e.g. iOS implementation) as a reference but the game has to be programmed again. At the moment there are already some games available.

Download Zune. The marketplace can be viewed, even if you don't own a WP7 device. At the moment there are 21 games available (German marketplace)

In the last week there were no new games, but I think that after the US launch there will be new content (on XBox 360 there are a few new games every week, meaning that after a few years there are many games available). The list of "ordinary" games without XBox Live support is steadily increasing.

Prices range from Free (one game ) to 6,49€ for The Harvest, The Sims 3, Max & The Magic Marker and Rocket Rio. There seem to be three price points: 2,99€ (Frogger, Flight Control, ...), 4,49€ (Earthworm Jim, Tetris, Bejeweled, Uno) and 6,49€ (see above).

What do you mean by Ordinary games?
also, ta for that extensive info. very helpful

when he says ordinary i think he's more referring to games which are popular on iPhone/Android. Ones which don't expect you to play it for long spans of time.

I really really want this game to be ported to WP7. Probably wont ever happen, though.

There are two types of games on WP7: XBox Live enabled games and games without XBox Live support. With "ordinary games" I meant the games without XBox Live.
XBox Live games are games from big game studios and often feature existing and popular franchises (The Sims, Need for Speed, Tetris, ...). They also can award Achievements and Gamerpoints. Additionally, they are featured on an extra page in Zune (if you open the "games" category in the Zune Marketplace you only see XBox Live games; for other games you must switch the category from "XBox Live" to "All", "Paid" or "Free").
Games without XBox Live support are often developed by small independent studios and developers and can not award Achievements or Gamerpoints.
In my opinion and based on screenshots, XBox Live games will be high quality and more polished, whereas Games without XBox Live range from rubbish to excellent. If you have a XBox, it's the same difference as XBox Live Arcade games (studio based titles) to Xbox Live Indie Games (community based titles). The problem with the ordinary games is that it's complicated to find the games worth playing, but I'm sure that there will be some breakout hits.

Emulators

Is the Artemis any good with emulators for consolegames, arcadegames and such? I'm just thinking that the clockspeed of the Artemis isn't really up to par with what is needed for most emulators.
I'm going to download the ScummVM later today to relive those glorious days of lucasarts adventure games.
But I was also thinking of downloading something like Morphgear. But as I've gathered Morphgear is discontinued. Some of the modules became open source, while others remain commercial (i.e. you have to pay for them). I'd really like to know if GBA games can be played in a decent way on the Artemis. Games like fire emblem, final fantasy tactics and such...
Also, can anyone PM me a link to a site with the game files for scummvm-games. I have bought these games on my Amiga500 back in the day and I can't imagine why i would have to pay for these games all over again, just to play them on my PDA. They should just release these games for free use so we can all enjoy these gems.

generally the Artemis can run the games, the problem comes when you want to control them! the buttons dont make the greatest game pads...
Monkey Island rules haha! I've you're interested I can PM you Monkey Island 1 + 2. I'm to trying to complete the game without a WWalkthrough but it's just too hard hehe
That would be awesome. I'm betting i'll find it harder to complete it this time round to when I was 13-14 and used to playing this kind of point and click adventure games all the time. I'm gonna look and see if i can find: Sam & Max, Loom, Full Throttle, Indiana Jones, Maniac Mansion...(i'm guessing that Grim Fandango isn't playable on ScummVM).
Which coincidentally brings me to another loved series of mine back in the day...Police Quest (and also King's Quest, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry...). Is there an emulator out there that allows you to play these games???
=> I found a program called PocketSarien, but the latest build i found was for pocket pc 2000!! anything else out there?
Does anyone know if this build of morphgear will run on the Artemis:
Morphgear Windows Mobile - Download Version 2.4.0.9
Pocket PC devices with the Intel XScale processor. This includes devices such as the Dell Axim X5 Advanced, Dell Axim X3, and HP iPAQ 2215.
The Artemis doesn't feature said processor, so I'm curious if it can run on it.
Hey, Which version of ScummVM works on the Artemis? i'm guessing its gonna be "Windows CE ARM package" from http://www.scummvm.org/downloads.php#stable .
cheers
You're right. It's the ARM Package. I have it installed and running since yesterday.
There's a great topic about ScummVM and its games on their forum:
http://forum.scummvm.org/viewtopic.php?p=24519&sid=69406681e9cf5636123d019c275c6c5d
Even though it explains everything in detail, I just can't seem to get Lure of the Temptress working (free download on ScummVM site). I wrote the files to a specified folder on my storage card (called ScummVMGames) and when I start up ScummVM and it asks me if it should automatically scan for games, it finds nothing, even when I manually redirect it to the folder where I stored the game.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...as well as sending me some games

Downloaded Flight Of The Amazon Queen and this one works as a charm. Very nice to play this type of games again. That absurd sense of humour found in games like Monkey Island is also present in this one and I absolutely love it. Wonder if Discworld will be playable...

What can we expect for the microsoft app store?

I really hope developers who design apps for the iphone and android will also make stuff for our app store. I've seen many great things from the android market( while many are in my opinion useless ). For example, the emualtor they have for android and iphone run very smooth with sound and all. especially the android ones! Yes we have morphgear and a bunch of others that run smooth...as long as you keep the sound off. Most of the emulators out for winmo havent been updated in who knows how many years! Whats the point if you're playing an rpg game like chrono trigger for example if you have no sound. What apps are you guys hoping to see on the microsoft app store?
Actually similar to what you're saying...
Multimedia, games...
I downloaded a couple of demos today from Microsofts Windows Mobile page...Wow they looked like 8bit Master System graphics...
Not cool...
Honestly thats all we PPC users lack IMO.

Future WP7 HUBS

I like the idea of HUBS, what HUBS would like to see for WP7?
I`d like to see for example
TV HUB -
Watched recorded TV from Windows Media Center and Slingbox
TV listings
TV Suggestions
Set Remote recordings on SKY BOX
Watch BBC Iplayer, Sky Player, ITV Player etc
Sports HUBS - Cricket, Football F1 etc
Scores,Fixtures,Stats,Betting
Travel info to sports venue
Weather info for sports venue
Team player profiles
News and Gossips
Travel HUB -
Buses and Trains - tickets, timetables, maps cancellations etc
AIR Travel - flight bookings, arrivals, departures
ROAD - Traffic updates, nearest service station, nearest car dealerships
Roadside Assistance, Maintainance Information, Router Planner
ps3 hub please Sony.
I know u wont be able to play games but they could let u:
Look at your trophies
Compare trophies with friends
See who is online
Check what is in the ps3 store
Sent messages to friends
and maybe other stuff i cant think of now
How about a Sony HUB not only playstation games but also Sony Music and Movie content also.
why would the maker of XBOX support PLAYSTATION? makes absolutely no sense.

lots of reasons:
1. Ms does not stop companies making apps even if made by competitors.
2. Sony Ericsson is making wm7 phones.
3. Google makes apps for maps and search for wm which compete with bing.
4. opera etc make browsers that compete with IE.
5. Ms makes ms office for macs & Symbian phones.
makes no sense to stop an hub(app) that would draw in ps3 users into buying wm7 phones (remember smart phones is a lot bigger business than xbox)
I think there's some confusion here. A "Hub" is a "panoramic interface", not the homescreen element like the Games one with the avatar popping up and out. So anyone and their dog can make a hub for their application, including Sony. The same goes for tiles except third parties aren't allowed to make rectangular ones, just the squares, if I'm not mistaken, but the Games one is a square as well. Those can be animated and so on. The takeaway is that Sony can easily make their Sony hub and their live tile if they wish. It was also mentioned more than once that third parties will be able to "hook into" existing hubs/tiles, although I'm not sure what's meant by that.
I think a Playstation Hub would sell millions of phones for Sony Ericsson and would be a way to be different from other manufacturers like LG Samsung and HTC................. Imagine PS2 and PSOne games plus PS Network
PS Network what exactly?
Microsoft did a great job confusing everyone with this XBox integration talk. It's just ability to sign in and upload those stupid achievements, not some magic stuff that will give you Halo on your phone or even ability to save game state between devices.
Also, no hub will bring PS games to your phone. The real purpose of Playstation network is to sell stuff to you, and that won't be possible, you have to use Marketplace. So if PS game developers decide to make WP versions you'll have them. They can also give you the ability to upload your trophies, of course, but you don't need any hub for that, and there's not much Sony can do about it.

Well...MS is trying to push Cloud services. I don't see why this HUB wouldn't push that along for gaming as well. Pushing saved states online to move between games on your phone and xbox as a future option. In a way, achievements can already be used to "save state" in a game if implemented into the game correctly (eg: an RPG where your experience and items are achievements).
I think the HUB will just open up more design space for them to play with their services and products as it relates to the integration between console and mobile.
If Sony makes a phone, they should be able to customize their vendor marketplace. I'm not sure on what rules apply to the vendor though as to what exactly can be sold over their marketplace.
I like these ideas and it's not hard to implement. Even the media center integration can be done in silverlight. For streaming the videos, you would have to write a client that would serve ASP.NET multimedia content (installed on the users MCE box), and, TADA, you are done.

Xbox Live, Windows Phone - Suggestion/Theory

So XBL games up until now for Windows Phone haven't all been that great... Well there are some good games but Microsoft aren't really utilising the Xbox Brand and bringing over serious games. Had a little idea while playing Dreamcast, it might be something they're already working on actually.
If you remember the Dreamcast it had a VMU (Visual Memory Unit) which was a memory card with a tiny screen and a few buttons you could play mini games on. For example, you catch Flickys in Sonic Adventure, transfer them to the VMU and play mini games with them when you're away from the console.
There's already rumors of Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 having the same core, this presumably ties into the Xbox as there was Xbox 360 code found in Windows 8 Betas. There's also Xbox Live cloud storage happening for Xbox and Windows Phone.
So... How about when you purchase an Xbox game you also get a Windows Phone companion game. For a game like Fifa you'd be able to play on the xbox and then on the go use your Windows Phone to train up players etc, same concept for fighting games.. Then when you get back to the Xbox changes that had happened on your windows phone (players levelling up etc) would be reflected in the main game.
For games like Halo etc you could play minigames witch allow you to unlock extra items, addons for the main game. This kind of concept has already partially been implemented in Fable Pub Golf.
This would solve the problem of having no big name games on Windows Phone but would also mean we would have games that are suitable for the Phone and not just ports which are hard to control.
They're already working on that; the best example being Kinectimals.
Cloud saving feature, that's all I can think of for now, though it's not really necessary because you won't be performing a hard reset, but what if you buy a new phone? I'm thinking of getting a new Nokia or HTC mango phone with ffc, but how about game saves and SMS on the older phone?
So there, maybe a save to cloud feature, or something like "easy transfer" like the one in windows 7 when migrating to a new PC.
I would like to see further development of the concept of using a WP7 device as an optional controller on the xbox. With the Wii-U having a touchscreen controller and the Sony making the PS Vita usable in that way, I think this might be a very real possibility. It might not work for every game but I could see it working well in others. For instance, in Madden you could download a companion app to go with the 360 version. You could use your phone to select plays instead of doing them on the screen.
I know they showed something sort of like that in the Kinect Adventures/WP7 demonstration video awhile back so the technology is obviously there in some capacity.
Edit: also regarding the OP's idea, I believe that sort of thing was talked about early on. You could download the mobile version of a game and earn unlocks and upgrades that would transfer to your console.

Gaming/Emulating games on the 8 Pro, what's possible?

Happy new year all.
Just thinking of flashing a new ROM and was contemplating what could be possible on current hardware.
The last time I ran a test from top to bottom I hit the ceiling at ps2 emulation but that was dodgy
Anyway, I personally haven't used any of the new emulators for a while so wondered what is currently possible? What have you used? What worked? Or was good?
I know in theory 90% of Wii games should work and everything underneath it, so GameCube, PSP, PSX, N64, Dreamcast, Saturn, 32x, jaguar, arcade, mega drive, SNES, Neogeo.
Any info, ideas, cool stuff,
IMO it all depends on the game.
I play NSMB Wii through dolphin and that works great. But as an example, I can't get Rogue Leader on GC to play on anything except a good GPU on a PC. The Hoth level brings everything to it's knee's and OP8P is no exception.
AetherSX2 is great for PS2 emulation and with a few tweaks seems to play everything very well. I tried shadow of the collosus and Black and both were very playable. Check youtube for how to tweak.
But yea, everything below that seems to work great. Dreamcast, PSP, PS1, Mame. I even managed to get Killer Instinct arcade working throuh retroarch and that worked very well.
You can also play packages for Doom 3 and OG Half Life as well as HL2 and Portal with hacky APK's.

What's NSMB?
Shadow of the colossus? If that's working then that's really really impressive, that absolutely pushed the ps2 to the limit, the use of fog to keep graphics in memory was genius for it's time and to manage to keep the frames up on ps2 hardware.
Cheers will have a look at that ps2 emulator, nice one.
PS:. I've got a guide on how to run PC games with native files
One of the things i've been using for gaming has been this app https://parsec.app/
Pop it on a PC you game on then log in, change some settings then leave that PC alone.
On a second device, android / mac / or other windows device, download the app from the link and install it.
Log in and you can then control the PC you installed it on in the first place, i have to say that the speed of input is really really good, i was massively impressed by the responsiveness and ability to play through games with minimal setup required.
Few things to change.
Set resolution to 1920x1080
Change network to latency / performance
Change network allowed to max / 50Mb
Renderer - DX11
That should work as expected.
I played some PS2 games on my Huawei P30 Pro already.
For the nature of emulation, not every game works. But everything below PS2 and below WII U is probably very enjoyable. Most emulators are open source and are ported to android anyway.
I would say God of War from PS2 is playable on the 8 Pro.
