[REVIEW] Power Skins for SGS2 T989

I had one for my vibrant, liked it and have ordered one for my SGS 2. Will post photos when it arrives.
*update* it's arrived - that didn't take long.
According to the folks at Powerskins, the battery is 1500mAh.
Like with the vibrant it doubles the width of the phone. I like the extra heft so it's not a big issue for me. Fit is good, the case is not going to come off with normal use. The plug fits very securely into the phone (the vibrant unit had a bit of play).
The device can be charged then deactivated by holding the power button on the back. That will let the phone battery run down rather than constantly peak charging it...

Yes... You have to not mind the extra thickness. I suspect the battery its the same mAH rating as the built in one but am not certain.

what exactly do they mean from the above description? this case has a built in battery pack or something? if so, it should add significant bulk.

I wouldn't buy this. Your better off buying a case and a separate battery. These cases plug into to the micro usb socket so when your charging the phone your charging the case. If the phone is fully charged and the case would charge the battery of the phone while the phone is draining its own battery. This will make your oem battery die faster since its going through full cycles more. I had one for mytouch 4g its battery died within 3 months from this case.
As soon as I bought a new battery and stop using the case the battery has been fine. I had that phone since its release date. Basically have the case charged but don't turn it on till the battery dies in your phone first. I wouldn't even keep it plugged in since the back is so easy to click in and activate the power skin. These cases also have the worst protection ever for a case. The phone is easy to fall out of the case. There is nothing to hold it down to keep it secure in place. Even a cheap gel skin has more protection than these things.

yup, that's true
it's not just this case, or vibrant or mytouch, that happens to all battery life.
i used to always leave my phones plug-ed in when i'm able to, to keep the battery topped up
but that killed the battery faster
since i stopped that, and went the route of replacing batteries after they go down to 15% percent (the auto low battery warning pops up) and switch to a fully charged pack, all my batteries last waaaaaaaaaaaay longer than when i kept it topped up on the charger

I don't like how it looks like the left side on the front shot its not rigid. That's what I hated about the d3o flex cover. Looks all uneven n can't even see the bezel in some spots. Bottom right seems jacked up
too. I can see bezel in the pic.

My sister got one of these for her Galaxy S1 ... not that great only gave her about an extra 1-2 hours max before it died. Also you have to charge it and the internal battery separately, taking it off every night so that you can charge them both.
Not worth it, in my opinion.

for anyone who has the powerskin case for this phone or any other...where do you keep your phone when you are out? in your pocket? if the added thickness im curious if its too bulky to carry around that way...ive been trying to search for a holster or case but i havent come across one...if anyone knows of one please link me

i had one for the vibrant and it did help with battery, it just kept the battery at 100% but the extra size was too big...i would recommend maybe a bigger battery.

Eh, I kind of stopped caring for that review as soon as you said that you're limited to being close to the computer with the generic micro USB cable they gave you Hahaha. For the record, any usb cable will work. I wrote a review in another thread. Here's the excerpt.

I suppose that's why some people have dedicated alarm clocks, however, but I'm not one of those people.
The battery life is good. Despite the battery in the pack not being as big as the OEM battery, I find that when I get the low battery warning at about 15% and turn the case on I'm normally back up to a strong 90-97% by the time the case turns off an hour or so later. Perhaps that's just me though. In addition to this, I also find that the case gets HOT while charging it, but that's to be expected. And since it's Winter, I don't particularly mind.
It's slightly annoying to have to take the phone out of the case to plug it into my computer to do the USB transfer, but at the same time it's such a non-hassle to take the phone out of the case I don't really mind. Besides, I have 3 sets of chargers with the phone, so I can charge the phone on the computer and the case off the wall, hahaha.
As far as protection goes, it's decent. There isn't alot of screen coverage, but that's what a screen protector is for. I personally don't plan on dropping it OR getting a screen protector, but, just a heads up. I like how the center of gravity on the unit is changed, so that out of the two times I dropped it it landed on either the absolute bottom near the charger where there is alot of extra padding or it landed on the bridge that connects the battery structurally to the rest of the case near the camera.
All in all, sometimes I take it out of the case when I'm feeling elegant, but like someone else said in this thread it makes for a good backup battery. I suppose sometime in the future I'll just be using it as a backup charger, but for the time being, I really enjoy the ability to leave my brightness at full and not have to worry about the battery running down. In addition to that, when I went online to the powerskin website and saw they were giving an emergency cellphone away with online order I asked about a similar deal for buying through AT&T. Customer service apologized and told me they didn't, but they instead sent me a cheapy little portable speaker, which was nice of them nonetheless.
So, coming from a neckbeard that bought about 12 different cases for his red iPhone 4, (some clear, some rubbery, and one battery pack...) and being relatively new to the form factor of the Skyrocket, I would say that personally I would rate the case at about a B, for the aforementioned reasons, with the cons being that it heats up, and does have the potential to damage the battery if you don't watch turning it on or off when you're supposed to.
Also, screw you guys who got it for $35. I could have used that extra $45 for a night at a bar and written it off as a business expense. :|

My Theory on the GN Extended Battery

Alternate Title: "Why Verizon and Samsung can Suck It"
DISCLAIMER: This post is purely my opinion and based on absolutely nothing except my experience with both batteries, and knowing Google and Verizon
The extended batter on the Nexus is perfect.......Too Perfect.
My nexus feels like an entirely different phone after.
Before, there was always an impending feeling that I that the phone was about the slip out of my hand. I could drop it at any moment. (with no case).
I slipped in the new battery in the VZW store parking lot and I couldn't believe what I was feeling. I'm still getting a case, but with this batter I'm confident I could hold on to it easily without one if I wanted to.
The back, that's maybe 1mm larger, completes the teardrop design of the phone PERFECTLY.
As several other have said, It just feels right.
My Theory: This is the phone that Google designed.
Do you think the engineers at Google looked at this amazing phone they designed and said "ok for the battery cover, lets go the opposite direction of the entire design and make the back concave IN THE OTHER DIRECTION"
No.
Do think they looked at this monsterous 4.5 inch samsung screen, and Verizons LTE network and said "Yea, lets put an 1850 mAh battery in this thing, even though we know the Bionic offers a whopping 2760 mAh extended battery and we could easily fit a 2100"
No.
What about common sense? What do you expect when you get an "exteneded battery?"
You expect it to be bigger. You expect it to stick out from the back. You expect it to mess up the lines and flow of the device because your trade off is a large capacity battery.
You don't expect the design to be lacking in the regular battery, literally noticeably wrong, and have the extended battery complete the real design.
Don't you think Google knows this?
With the extended battery this phone is too perfect, too symmetrical, the lines are too good, and common sense (Which you better believe Google wants in their flagship product) says they designed this phone for this battery.
So, Verizon or Samsung (or probably both, because they both get paid) made the deal with Google contingent on putting a smaller battery in the phone and thus creating the world's easiest upsell in the "extended" battery.
For people that already have the extended battery, I'm betting you agree.
If you don't have it yet, don't be quick to call BS on me here until you hold it in your hand. It's impossible to describe well enough the differences and perfection achieved until feel it and see it yourself.

I don't know about all that but this phone does feel awesome with the extended battery. I don't know why but before it felt very slippery and unstable.

This. The phone feels so much better in your hand with the extended battery cover, it needs to be experienced first-hand (no pun intended).
Although I have no idea whether google designed it that way or not.

I was actually thinking the same thing but considering the extended battery was only $25 I really don't mind paying for it.

I really dig the added weight. It feels more...solid?

Now I really can't wait to get this damn thing. Tomorrow hopefully. They said 2-day shipping when I ordered on Friday, today would make the 3rd day, but it didn't come. Bastards.

same thing happened to me. i complained to fedex, gonna see what they say lol

Depending when you ordered Friday its probably shipped Monday. I ordered my phone and extended battery Friday night and while I got a shipped email sunday (I think) Fedex didnt actually receive the item from Verizon until Monday at 6 AM.

I can't decide about how I feel about the extended battery. Luckily, our phones here came with both 1750 and 2000 mAh and covers in the box so I can switch back and forth. The 1750 battery/cover has the back concave with the little hump on the bottom. I think that keeps the design a bit consistent with their other Galaxy's (S II, S II LTE). I agree with you that the extended battery cover completes the tear drop PERFECTLY which surprised me. On the other hand, I think the added weight just makes me feel like I'm going to drop it. It's defiantly noticeable and I prefer the weight of the 1750 battery.
I'm not sure if I want something more comfortable and light or something better looking with more power.

My ext. battery showed up yesterday. With as much as I'm playing/setting up the phone, I needed more juice. I like having the added power and don't mind the weight/size, plus it still fits in my Incipio case (slight bulge but nothing I'll worry about). Once my honeymoon phase is over with the GN, I can flip-flop between batteries should I need to. Plus it was $25, can't pass that up.

Also, just for grins I thought I would mention the verizon phone shell is thicker not just the rear cover compared to the GSM..... So seeing as they already re-worked it for the bigger standard battery it would make sense that the extended battery works well with it. Even tho I'm really not a fan of most Verizon phones due the the need for huge bricks for batteries that are notoriously packed on the back.....

Does anyone else have an issue where the ext cover is slightly popped up around the camera? You can basically push the cover in/out right below the camera.
I think I read someone else posting about the cover not seating, but I think it may have been the stock cover.

I have this issue on both the stock and extended battery, don't know why or if i should be worried about it though.

I think you should send your fellow korean in the states your 2000 mah battery and cover

I want to get the extended battery, But I want to know that it will work with the real car dock (the one that uses the pin connectors) whenever that thing is finally in stock. I am really upset that verizon is selling that cheap car dock knock off right now and isnt offering any accessories that take advantage of the pin connectors right now. (probably because they dont work with cases and VZ would rather sell more cases right now.)

If Verizon/Samsung put as much thought into this as you believe they did then you'd think they would have also realized that it's going to be much harder to convince someone to buy an extended battery because it feels better than because they need the extra juice? I would probably side with you if the stock battery was 1600mA or something but it's a sufficient 1850mA and the extended battery is barely larger.
I do agree with you to an extent but to say that they purposely flawed the design is a pretty big statement to be making...especially when this phone sits on the shelf right next to the Droid X and Razr which have FAR worse backs than this phone. Verizon didn't coax Motorola into poorly designing their phones so that the Nexus's faults would fly under our radar did they?
Perhaps, I'll have an incredible moment of epiphany when I get mine in the mail today but for now I remain skeptical.

It's only 1mm thicker...while that COULD be enough to make it fit improperly I doubt it.

i agree entirely with the OP. idk if samsung and/or verizon did it, or if google did it, but i do think that it was a bit of a cop out to put the crap factory battery in it. i think im going to pick up an extended today

FWIW the GSM version also has a smaller battery, smaller than the VzW version I believe, so you can't really pin this all on Verizon. But I do agree the extended battery makes for a better overall experience. I'm pretty much always around a charger so it's a non-issue for me, but I still go with the extended battery

Ghetto battery modding.

The Sprint S3 is my first smartphone and this forum has been AMAZINGLY helpful to me and I thank everyone here greatly. Sadly at this point I dont really have anything useful to give back, however I do get comments and questions on my ghetto battery modding by people at school all the time, so maybe a few of you will get a chuckle out of it too:

I bought 2 extended batteries, a 4800mAh no name off ebay and a 4500mAh onite off amazon, then I stripped off their casings and seperated the cells then I stripped the cover off my stock battery and carefully lined up everything and glued all 5 cells together with arctic silver thermal adhesive. After that I carefully wired them all together in parallel and cut a hole in my otterbox so that they all stick out the back. I figure I now have between 10500mAh and 11400mAh.
Ghetto eh? But it works great, it charges just like normal and while I can kill it by gaming all day, it lasts about 3-5 days under normal usage for me depending on how I have my settings. An unexpected benifit that I discovered completely by accident is that if you drop it from about 3.5-4 feet up it seems to always land flat on the battery (I tested this by standing on my bed doing drop tests).
If I had been very careful I could have even kept the NFC antenna on the battery doing this, but I didnt know to watch out for it, so I accidently destroyed it.

Thanks man! I appreciate it. And my wife has a normal S3... Honestly I like the way mine feels MUCH better, its just way easier to hold onto and easier to use one handed without it slipping around. The fact that I could use it to jump start my Honda in a pinch is a nice bonus too!

Ironically, my Honda battery is suffering during this colder season and could use such a boost! LOL
Honestly, I can't see how anyone could actually use the S3 without a case. I have never held such a slippery and uncomfortable device...begging to fly out of my hand. Too thin. But there are so many case options out there that compliment it. Love it. :good:

Dangerous? is it dangerous to carry a 9 volt battery? Fully charged this is around 4 volts, why would it be dangerous?

Very unlikely, I wear carpenter jeans and and always use the leg pocket for my phone and nothing else goes in there, so there is almost no chance of it shorting out against anything. This phone has had this battery since about 3 weeks after Sprint released the S3s and it has never been an issue, and I recently redid the connections and switched from gorilla glue to thermal adhesive.
Not only that but if it did start heating up, there is nothing holding the battery in there but friction. Pulling the battery out takes me all of 1 second.

i carry uncovered batteries (AA) like that for another device and shortly after use if they come in contact with anything metal they can combust, and at the very least burn a hole rught through your pants and severely burn your leg.
just asking. dont know naythign about batteries but i had one close call with the AA batteries.

I work in IT and keep my pockets very organized, if I was tossing this phone into a purse or pocket with a bunch of loose change or other metal objects I would have it better insulated. I will probably do so anyway at some point but right now it is not an issue.
As a side point I seriously doubt anything but shorting out could possibly cause any kind of "thermal runaway" with this setup. The battery has 5 times the mass and better airflow then stock and the phone can only draw the same power. I do still get a warm screen with this setup (how the CPU/GPU dissipates heat) but the battery never gets much more then body temp, even under the most brutal use for hours at a time.

Well it was sweet until I saw the pictures.. LOL! Not really something I'd want on the back of my phone.. It's usually function over fashion for me, but in this case I think I'll make an exception. It's not really the fashion thing, it's I think it'd be really awkward to hold.

Keep in mind I am not trying to convince anyone else to do this, and I have readlly big hands as you can see from the pictures, but I find it much more comfortable to hold and use. 2 handed its only slightly better, but one handed its WAY better... the bottom edge of the battery fits right above my pinky and the weight centered in the back both give a much better feel.... when I hold my girlfriends stock s3 in one hand it feels like its gonna fall straight down out of my hand or fall forewards towards me, that might just be me though.
It also has what I call a manly heft. I don't mind it at all but if you are looking for a sleek featherweight device..... this isn't. But I like it :fingers-crossed:

Even if it was awkward to hold, the battery life would so be worth it.. Getting the battery life of my old flip phone would be an incredible experience on a smartphone. I don't think I'd ever attempt this, but I'm wondering did just kinda wing it, or did you know what you were doing..?

Be super careful doing this. I know that lithium polymer batteries are really bad news if they are punctured or damaged... I believe this is also the case with the Lithium Ion batteries.. specifically if you inadvertently short them causing heat and internal breakdown.. Have seem my share of laptops that were burned when someone used the wrong laptop power supply (21V instead of 12V for example)
Not saying to not do this sort of mod... just saying to be VERY careful and don't risk your safety or risk burning down your house for the sake of extra battery life.. there are too many USB charging batteries out there to help with battery life extension if you are away from a USB port for too long.

I have done my fair share of messing with electronics, but im not an electrical engineer or anything... If you are comfortable soldering, its not that big of a deal. The hardest part is attaching the wires to the stock battery, because you have to lift up the small circut board the contact points are attached to, then resolder it back down after you attach wires underneth it. But to be fair you dont need the boards of the other 2 batteries so you can pratice on them. Then you line up all the batteries where you want them and glue them together. After that its all wire routing and ataching negatives to negatives and positives to positives.
It would probably be a good idea to have the main battery completely drained before starting. But having the other 4 with some charge would be fine if you are somewhat careful.
Be sure to pick a very thin wire with a decent casing, some kind of ribbon wire would probably work best I think, however, I just used ethernet wire I had laying around, but some of them had great insulation and some of them the insulation sucked.
If you want to play around with it without jumping in with both feet you can take apart just about any old cell phone battery and see how they are put together, they are all pretty similar. My old verizon LG octane 950mAh battery actually runs my S3 and charges normally in it, it just has to be held in with a piece of tape.
Its like anything really, if you are patient and careful you will get a nice finished product, if you are not......

You need more protection. If anything ever, and yeah, I get it, you never have anything in your pocket, but if anything ever shorts that out, you're ****ed.
The whole "Never have anything in my pocket" argument isn't working for me. You could have it on a desk, bump something into it, and then burn down the building you're in. Just cover it up and it should be fine.

I do agree I should probably slap some insulation on the side... However I think all of you people who are worried about something terrible happening are wildly overestimating the results.... I have shorted out this battery, its not a huge deal. Would it be bad if I purposefully directly shorted it out for a long period of time? Well yea... is it a big deal if it brushes up against something and I immediately pull it away? Has not been a problem so far,,,
This is not a single cell battery, its 5 cells connected by thin copper wire... I have actually used copper wire this thin as a fuse in a pinch, if it gets hot it melts then you are back to a single cell, assuming that the arcing didnt simply melt away the metal shorting out, which usually happens nearly instantly.

Wireless Charging Phone Sleeve for Nexus 5

Guys, I'm going to be launching a wireless charging phone sleeve on Kickstarter in January. The unique selling point will be the Smart app that communicates with the sleeve.
I'm doing research for the launch now to determine which phones to support. If you guys could just share your thoughts that'd be great.
Namely:
Will you as a Nexus 5 user invest in a new phone sleeve?
Why do you/ dont you use existing portable chargers like powerbanks and Qi chargers?
If you know any cool portable wireless chargers?
I myself use a Nexus 4 with Qi built in but I haven't found a satisfactory wireless charging solution yet... that's kinda why I worked on my own. Thanks! I'm also asking the Samsung s5 guys for their feedback.

I would definitely use it because it seems like a very cool way of charge your phone while you are on the go!

I have both a Nexus 7 and a Nexus 4, so I'm definitely invested in the Nexus family! Ie. I definitely want to support the Nexus 5 if people want it.
The humongous Nexus 6 on the other hand...

I don't get why you need to make that thing a sleeve. I wouldn't buy it because basically it'd make my phone unusable while I charged it. Make it have a transparent front, or a removable front, and maybe it's worth it.
I frankly don't see the point in it, and frankly having an app that "optimizes my charging experience" is something I dont see as something I need or want, I want my phone to charge and installing an app so I get better charging (in some way I don't understand or even see how it's possible) is something I want to avoid, not look upon as a unique selling proposition.
You are competing with $5 power banks here, at least in my mind, and I really don't see something here that makes me want to spend the money I can see this costing just so I can charge my phone wirelessly while it's in my bag.
I'm not being negative here, I'm being honest and since you're probably going to be investing some of your money here, I hope you don't take this the wrong way. Make it modular, with different sleeves you can buy for your phone, make it possible to use it as a power bank for non-qi devices and you have something interesting *for me*.

I see the need and want for it... but i dont like how its a sleeve... say i use this at night... and use my phone for my alarm. well how do i silence the alarm without taking it out of the charger... isnt going to happen...
I like to idea of modular, were you can maybe has detachable sleeves... maybe a large one that covers the screen for people who want it in their bags, or maybe half a sleeve for people who use it at night, and still have to have access to the mute/disregard of the alarm apps.

Yeah I see what you mean. That's a great idea!
However, that's not necessary now because the sleeve is thin enough that you can place your phone over it and it will still charge, ie. The sleeve becomes a charging mat.
But at the end of the day, its still a sleeve so you need to slip it out before using the phone if its inside. Good idea though! Maybe I can offer it as a stretch goal

I'm already using a powerbank. But as others stated, it's not very comfortable when you're using the phone.
I think a case would be much more useful than a powerbank or a sleeve. And you could add an attachable cover to sweeten the deal. That way everyone could get what they want from our lovely phones. And I would definitely buy and support something like that.

Not settled on the price yet. Thinking of two versions now, a daily driver denim material and a premium luxurious leather. But b still experimenting. People have told me v they want a transparent front, so testing that atm

Currently have a Galaxy S4 with a ZeroLemon extended battery but I'm on the verge of switching to a Nexus 5. The only thing I'd miss from my S4 is the huge battery life with the ZeroLemon so I was looking at battery cases. However, I love the idea of a wireless charging pouch/sleeve. It would allow the Nexus 5 to remain naked when using it but keeps it charging while in the pocket. I was thinking of doing this using a standard external battery but that'll require plugging it in which is a real pain.

Just out of interest, will the pouch be specific for a particular phone or will it be generic for a variety of phones (assuming roughly the same size). Also, is the pouch designed to only accept the phone naked? What if the phone has a slim TPU case or bumper?

1. Generic for a variety of phones!
2. Insisting on stretchable materials, so the phone is easy to slip in and out- PLUS it tolerates slim cases! And even the s5 wireless charging back. Not sure what maximum thickness case works though- this calls for a stress test video.

1. It's better looking, and it doesn't make your phone thicker or heavier or imbalanced. Why should you have to choose between a slim, beautiful phone and a bulky one with battery life that lasts the day?
2. Both sides and wrong side up it will still charge!
3. Durability as in... the material? Battery capacity? Battery longevity? I'm committed to making ampere the best it can be plus I'm a tactile person, so the sleeve's fabric is high quality stuff- I really like the feel of the denim, very tough.

You know what- I hadn't thought about any official certifications! Again, I chose denim which is great looking and durable, so I guess you can extrapolate from your quality jeans. Given the hardware though- I wouldn't say its resistant to water or sweat, but we built it with durability in mind so it wouldn't bend, the insides' aluminium instead of plastic, etc.

Wouldn't aluminum basically kill the radio signals? Thus using more battery and potentially calls/texts ect if it can't get a signal? This is what happened when I tried using a case with metal.

Seems like a decent idea, need a tester let me know I have 2 nexus 5s I can test with running both lollipop and kitkat. If you are looking for a beta tester just let me know figured it'd be worth a try whats the charge rate of the wireless charger? Would need something above 1000mah pulling wise. My current pocket charger does 800 and my home charger does 1400 so would like something in the middle but anything higher would be awesome it looks like a decent product.

ZeroLemon 8500mah case review

First, I did receive a review sample from ZeroLemon.
Pro: massive amount of battery
Worked first time. Living up to name ZeroLemon.
Case itself is grippy and comfortable
Con: It's LARGE, expect that.
It's not fast charge capable.
If you're looking for a slim solution, this is NOT your choice, if you're looking for massive amounts of additional power on the go without having to carry a cable and external battery, then this IS your solution.
As I'm sure everyone will mention, it's LARGE. Until battery tech gets smaller, you gotta cram that 8500mah battery somewhere. It's pretty hefty as well. If you wanted with this battery pack, you could outlast everyone around you in a marathon Pokemon Go session, long flights of movies won't be a problem. It's not going to provide any screen protection if dropped, but it might give you some arm workouts as you use the phone.
It's brainless to use. Plug your S8+ into the battery, slip it into the case. They provide a headphone extension cable if your headphones do not fit in the built in hole. Well packaged, instruction booklet was adequate, tho you won't need it. Press the button once and it gives a battery readout on the back of the case, press it 3 seconds, starts charging. All the button passthru's worked fine and aligned up. You are still "capable" of using the fingerprint reader, expect a bit more "reach" to get there. The case itself doesn't block the camera at all. No ghosting of the case in your photos.
If I were designing this, I would have added a flipout kickstand so you could just sit and watch movies without having to hold the bulk.

I want to purchase one of ZeroLemon 8500 mah battery packs but I can't seem to find a belt case/pouch that's compatible. This is my only drawback. I have always used ZeroLemon's in the past and am satisfied with the performance of their batteries.

I ordered the largest case Turtleback Leather had and it still is a little too snug. But, I gave it to my son for his Note 4, so all was not lost. But I notice they make a case for the S8 and S8+ for you friends that are interested.

I wish I could have gotten one
