I think the Incredible introduced Android to many people, and without insulting anyone, I think a lot of these people are first timers to rooting, Linux, etc... so we have lot of "unseasoned" people with itchy trigger fingers, and root
Considering that the reflash looks like it will be released any day/minute now, there are some things that I wanted to start a discussion on. Some of these may be answered at the time of the release by unrevoked... but none the less I'm going to start:
1) Koush's recovery has nandroid. I think that someone (maybe me when I get off of work) should write up a quick write up on how to use nandroid to back up your system/use it to flash new roms
2) I think that Koush's Rom Manager will work with our phones, not to mention that i really like it . There should be a quick post on what this is, and how to use this.
For all of the "seasoned" people in here, before posting "this in unnecessary, this already has been done for other phones, etc....": If you're going to post, please post something relevant and educational for people instead, or just request that the thread be closed. NO FLAME PLEASE. I realize that this thread is for the more "noob" person.

I am about as far from a computer/tech n00b as you can get, but I am extremely new to android. I would certainly welcome a primer of this nature.
Moderately seasoned nerd, but the incredible is my first smart phone. I absolutely welcome a "first-timers" thread with regards to rooting / tweaking this phone.
A preemptive thanks is definitely deserved, especially the level of drama I saw while trolling in the forums here, more-so over the past few weeks, and while some of the unfortunate "false starts" that always invariably occur with a startup of this nature.
Again, a heart-felt thank-you, and I really look forward to learning a new process on a completely different platform. I continue to eagerly await a streamlined process, especially one that I can learn from, and violate more to tweak my experience.

I would just replicate what's been done in other android devices' forums: A ROM Bible and a Complete Rooting How-To, and get 'em both stickied. Check out the Dream forum for good examples. I would help if asked

I will search XDA tonight, and provide links to "help" guides in either the first post *edited* or make a new thread. Good point, no need to re-invent the wheel. However, a sticky thread in this particular forum is probably needed.

Thanks for making a thread like this. Even though this is my first smart phone, I have a good amount of experience with similar things so I've picked up on most of it relatively quickly.
I was able to obtain a beta copy of the recovery flash tool from hanging around the IRC chat and was able to get my ClockworkMod Recovery up and running.
I have one question about nandroid though; I was able to backup the majority of my files but when it gets to the final step of backing up sd-ext it gives me a message saying "No sd-ext found" and that it cannot be backed up. What exactly is the sd-ext and is it essential to have backed up before I start installing ROMs?

It means you don't have an ext format partition and thus it wasn't backed up. Which is exactly how it should be right now.

Better get us a Spoiler and find out if your source was running CM5.0.7/8 or Froyo on their DI -- "sd-ext" is the new way (via Cyanogen) of doing/mounting apps2sd

Of course, that's the problem, a recovery that presupposes the CM way of ext-fs/apps2sd presupposes someone was using a ROM that requires it otherwise, that recovery isn't recommended AT ALL, because nandroid, fix permissions, etc all look to the wrong place for ~/app, /app-s, ~dalvik, etc . . . non-CM/pre-5.0.x ROMs do things differently with EXT, if at all. See what I'm getting at?

I love what koush has done with the Cyan port... So if his recovery works best with it, then so be it.... Though if he could update the recovery to look for both places that's be great too

I know Firerat over on Dream is good at writing switches to make appropriate exceptions for different SPLs, apps2sd and partitions schemes. If push come to shove we could ask him for suggestions. And I awfully concerned because A) I don't like modding without nandroids and B) I prefer Amon-RA's recoveries and his options for CM5/non-CM Roms

the only modifications made are the su and flash_image binaries are included and ro.secure has been turned to 0 so you can adb remount.
How to flash download the rom from here
Place rom on sdcard
wipe data and all else
then flash rom
reboot and do what you need to do

I want to have a known working recovery before I make any more changes to my phone. I am not exactly a newbie to this stuff (I have a Pandigital Novel that has been rooted and hacked into a nice tablet) but this is taking things to a whole new level for me and I need my phone. So I'm a bit nervous.
Of course I really wish I'd asked around some before I got to work on removing some of the stuff on it already (mostly known junkware from Virgin Mobile and stupid stuff like weblinks pretending to be native apps) after rooting it with superoneclick and installing root explorer. I need to know if your rom or the one I linked to will be able to allow me to roll back to a default installation that I can revert to if there are any issues down the road. Can you help me?
I apologize if this isn't the right place for this question. Thank you for the many mods I have seen you do already. I look forward to trying them once I have a fallback plan.

I'm not actually sure what your talking about but I've posted this on three different sites so far. I do that for the guys that don't go to other forums. There probably isn't any difference in the roms.

I'm not sure exactly how his is different since I didn't build it. Honestly the only way to know for sure that it's stock rom is to get someone that hasn't rooted yet flash the recovery and get a backup of system. I've been waiting for someone like that to come along but ... It hasn't happened yet.
I won't tell you which forums to watch but I'm partial to xda cuz I been on here since my first android phone and it doesn't have those flash ads that pop up cover your entire screen until you click the x.

My only excuse is that it was late when I found the thread and I wasn't reading clearly. Going by that statement his rom and your rom basically seem to be the same things.

Forgive my ignorance, but isn't rooting actually a requirement of obtaining the backup? Or did I misread the instructions somewhere? It'd be nice if someone at Virgin Mobile were to leak the complete rom somewhere so people had a fall back option besides trying to return the phone as bricked. (If that's even possible?)

Sounds like a good reason to pick a forum. Not sure if I'm a member of any places that do that since I run with adblock and noscript enabled most of the time.
Any chance you could link me to written instructions on how to flash the rom you have here? I know you have video tutorials but those are harder to follow for me because I am hard of hearing. Music I can do because it is "beautiful noise" and I can usually find some lyrics to get the words of. Your video HOWTOs are not good for me because I have to strain to hear what is being said.

Thanks for posting this. It just came in handy when I was changing my virgin phone number. Part of the process is dialing ##841446# to bring up the activation menu, but the ## prefix on CM7 does not work, apparently only a stock ROM can do that.
Any way to put it on a phone friendly site? No matter what browser I use on my phone it will not download from google docs.

It's pretty much as described, a stock Opt V rom, with Super User already set up and installed.
Titanium worked on it no problem as well.
thanks a ton man! i needed to flash back to stock to get my 3G working again. if you flash a custom rom while youre between payments, you know, during down time, you may need to flash back to stock and run the activation app next time you put service on your phone.
worked like a charm. i thought my 3G was broken. im doing a happy dance now!

Without Root you can't do any of it.

WITH superuser permissions you can do a lot of things:
1-use apk´s that you can´t use without root access
2-flash roms
3-do s & eng - off for flash new basebands
4-flash new kernels and do overclock or underclock (for example,set up the speed of the processor)
5-change your screensplash, your boot animation, power off animation...
resumed: you have access to IMPROVE your device
you can do more things that i do not write...sure
Basically Root allows you to access all the underlying files, as administrator, on your phone, so what you can achieve is limited only by your skill not the software. IMHO the biggest reason for root is the ability to carry out a proper backup, after that the choice is yours.

Maybe a daft answer but it's true: It's a bit of a dirty hack and will often leave all manner of strangeness floating about. Once you get around to wiping everything and putting the ROM you want on (a reboot will probably solve it) then all will be well.
Whilst you're going through the process expect more of this.
Best guess for your particular example is just the retries without rebooting.

Have to say I disagree about putting a sticky for that.
1. The site tries to limit the number of stickies.
2. Where would it go?
3. Who would look?
4. Who would find it?
5. The question has been asked and answered SOOOOO many times already that it would be easier to find one of those (search results are date ordered) than to find the sticky (trust me, I just tried).
(I've not asked the questions for answers by the way, I know the answers. Just there as a point.)

If I knew the url to the sticky, I'd post that as a reply early in the thread. The sticky could contain a moderated list of advantages/disadvantages to rooting a device.

Yes, you will void the warranty by rooting your phone and being bricked is something if you does not follow the procedures correctly.

I am looking for some guidance as I have a stock DHD 2.3 (freshly updated) If there's someone who can tell me the steps and eventually the links because I don't know the order of the rooting process nor where to find the tools I shall hit the thanks button madly and hope I won't end with a big digital brick..

Well, you need to downgrade first DOWNGRADE LINK.
Then after radio S-OFF (you dont have to, but it'll be much better) you can install ROM Manager and flash CWM recovery.
The CWM recovery will allow you to flash new Custom ROMs to your device.
You can then go back up to 2.3, or do whatever you want really.
I can't suggest any ROM to you, because everyone has their own taste in ROMs. I flashed a Stock-ROOTED 2.3 ROM and modified it to my liking using many different MODs out there.
But the android development section contains many different ROMs.
EDIT: CWM recovery will add many advantages to your phone. One big advantage is backing up your phones current ROM (aka Nandroid).
If anything goes wrong while trying to flash other ROMs or MODs, you can just simply restore your backup (and if you know where the problem is, you can restore only part of the backup). This feature is what made me install (or flash) CWM recovery.
And plus, it makes flashing ROMs and other stuff so easyyyyyy!!!
This forum isn't here to hold peoples hands to get them through rooting processes etc. All information is gathered in quite simple guides that are available for everyone to read so we won't have to explain over and over again to the thousands of new users how to do everything. Your question have been asked countless times and you would have found multiple threads with everything explained thouroughly if you used the search function (read the rules). But instead you created a new thread and made it harder for the next person to find information because this forum is filling up with a lot of similar threads that could have been avoided if people spent some time searching the forum. I don't mean to be offensive, but you have to be able to do something on your own if you want to enter the world of custom roms etc. New users should do some researching so that they know what they're getting in to and not just jump in head first and hope that somebody does everything for them

I use a different card generally it is only used to bypass security... so does not need to be used all the time .... if you use your normal card backup it up as you may trash

well, after S-OFF, you install ROM Manager, then choose the first option from ROM Manager ('flash clockworkMod Recovery').
--ROM Manager and CWM recovery is not a MUST, but is needed to flash ROM and MODs to your device.
let me make it clear...
radio S-OFF is to allow you to flash new radios(if you dont know what a radio is, search ).
ENG S-OFF allows you to do more extreme things and can get you out of a 'nearly bricked' device (so i've heard). It makes your phone VERY flexible and allows you to modify nearly everything!

anyway, this isnt needed to be rooted, it just increases the amount of thing you can do with your phone.
CWM recovery flashes over your stock HTC Recovery. Its also not a must, but also allows MUCH more flexibility.

Ignore that virus warning, it'd be your AV identifying it as a rootkit, which oddly enough it is. If you can add it to your whitelist or disable your AV whilst downloading/moving it from your PC to your phone.

I would apreciate some help here as i got really confused.
I just unlocked my bootloader from HTCDev just to discover that I cannot install custom recovery, I cannot have root access and there are no recent custom ROMs to install (I need a stable one but recent, not older than mine - 2.3.5)
Could you help me by answering, what's the point of unlocking bootloader if I can't have the above?
I need to use sdcard for apps but for this, Root is required which is not able.
I need custom ROM (if there is one which is fine tuned with better performance, battery, and lighter)
I need to use apps that need root access, i.e titanium backup, etc. how can I use them without root?

First things first........as a senior member you should know well to post questions in the General section ONLY
Second..... if you have unlocked the bootloader correctly(i know you might have done that), root via Doomlord's easy root kit....
As far as the recovery is concerned...use Rom manager..... it's the easiest way
And the "aliveness" of the forum is quite well as compared to other fora...... the other mid-range phones may have more roms but a majority of them are PURE KITCHEN WORK while others have a little framework changes in CM7..... so there's no extra choice as compared to our phones.....
If you want good roms, mindhaxer/einstein.frat's(they both are the same) roms are good sense ones
Or you can try CM7 or CM9 if you are an AOSP fan

Second, even if I posted in Q&A, I don't believe I would get any different answers and,
third and most important, I have done my reasearch thoroughly but couldn't find this part you mentioned anywhere so I was trying to gain root with many other methods like super tool, etc. Now, if those guides are not stickies how could I possibly know where to find those steps? they were not even in the first 4-5 pages of the WFS forum.
Yes as a senior member I decided it would be wiser to post here in order to have better chances but maybe I'm wrong.
Anyway, I have to thank you again because you guided me to find the DooMLoRD package which wasn't mentioned anywhere else and now in a few minutes I managed to root the phone which I abandoned a few hours ago.
I still insist though that this info must be gathered here as sticky otherwise new comers will always be confused and need years to manage something which in other forums is managed in minutes.

I agree with you I've been trying to figure out the rooting of this phone for the past two hours, I never bother posting for help as you always get scolded and people say duh use search which is really helpful.
I did I didn't find the answers. this forum is a bit of a mess tbh compared to the onex forum..

If you need any help from here just let me know. I have already root on my phone and it's quite easy once you have all the steps in hand.

I went from complete noob to unlocking, installing cwm and then a custom rom by doing a lot of reading in xda and other forums. The info is all there!
You expect to spend 2hrs reading and know how to root, you need to spend more time learning, and the more time time you spend the less chance of messing it up.
I spent a lot more than 2hrs and all went fine and I've never had a problem.

Its not about getting an answer to your question. Its about keeping this section clutter free. Its the development section for a reason, and I'm mighty sure I'm not seeing a custom ROM in this thread.
So follow the rules and post in General or Q&A next time.

Second, I see that you are ready and willing to give me lessons and increase your thanks meter between each other but before teaching me how much time of reading is necessary before you root, let me tell you that I was in xda long before you and I know very well both how much reading is necessary but I also know what the spirit of a community is. There are mods here who didn't get irritated as fast as you. From the speed of your answers I recognise that you must not be older than 25 which doesn't make you mature so @scott_doyland, your opinion is accepted but I was a noob on 2005 and I have performed the root procedure on more than 6-7 phones just by reading so I've done my homework plenty of times and you know what? You don't need 2 hours to root a phone. Actually I need about 30 minutes max including the reading I do on the instructions of each phone. Only on this forum I didn't find all the info gathered and before you jump answering on that, I'm not complaining about this but that's the reason I posted in order to get an answer and avoid the research of 200 pages. It's you guys that got inflamed about that. So take a lesson from a veteran who broke the rules. The idea of the community is to help each other even if the answer was given several times. Some people may not have the time to read or maybe they have read tons of info on other forums and they are visitors like me and can't spent the same amount of time in all forums for each phone they have to root. Ok bro. I have a S-ON, Unlocked Bootloader just like you. There are no way to root after u unlocked bootloader (because u need to update to lastest Hboot in order to UBL). I'd tried all tools i can find on xda and NONE of them can be use to root. There also don't have any clear guide for S-ON with UBL show how to install custom rom and get root.
But after few days digging up the forum, i'd managed to install custom rom + root. I share with you:
After your phone bootloader unlocked via HTCdev, your phone sure will have either HBOOT-1.08.0099 or HBOOT-1.09.0099. You'll need a ClockworkMod recovery image on your computer to install rom + root. And you'll need a working Android SDK with Fastboot to do get ClockworkMod working on ur S-ON phone.
OK let's say now you have fastboot folder alr, and know how to use it.
1. Download lastest clockwork mod .img here: http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
2. put the file .img just downloaded to the fastboot folder.
3. Turn off phone, then hold volume down + power ---> wait the menu searching for the zip file (of course we ignore this) then press Power again to go to fastboot menu.
4. connect phone to laptop via usb cable.
5. Open fastboot folder, right click choose open command windows here.
5a. If you are on HBOOT-1.08.0099:
Copy this and right click to the command windows, paste then enter, ur phone will automatic restart to CWM menu:

Ok, because many people are confused and PM me about what's next after unlock, here's the answer. Don't try the Super Tool, it doesn't work. At least for some people.

and use that script instead. It will flash Busybox and su to your phone. That's it. You have root acces then.
@Ghekua: If you have unlocked your bootloader then you have already installed the apropriate HBOOT. Just run that script from the post I attached above and you will have root access.
Edit: Oh, sorry, I read your post before edit and got different meaning. Anyway, thanks, I used the post above which is much faster and easier and I'm done.
Ghekua, if you install a custom rom it will already have root access, no need to root a custom rom.
I rooted my stock rom just by flashing cwm and then via cwm flashed a root.zip file from xda.

Flashing a new rom does not wipe cwm.
Cwm is always there unless you flash a different 'recovery'.

it's true for S-OFF bro. For S-On every time flash new rom need to fastboot to flash cwm again.
(i'd tried to install cwm by rom manager app, by flashable zip downloaded from clockworkmod website, no use)
I find downloading alquez's recovery and replacing the android_info file with the last RUU/update [of same], then flashing via hboot to be the simplest solution [since it works on marvel & marvelc].. I just keep that PG76IMG.zip on my sdcard and swapout android_info as needed [no need to sign or anything]. Of course then if you wanted latest-and-greatest [gsm] you'd root [Heritz guide works across board gsm & cdma], install your Rom Manager and reflash. But I like simple solution that works on both my wildfire s's
I do agree this is a general topic and if anyone has read my simplistic thread responses, I've stated above philosophy repeatedly in various threads.. and it seems to always work

How strange. I'm s-on and I never have to reflash CWM. I've only ever flashed it twice and the second time was just to upgrade to a later CWM.
