[Q] ADB Push/Install Cyanogenmod 6 settings.apk - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Would this work? Would it give us the ability to change the clock and notification text to white so that we can use black metamorph themes?

cant install via app manager. i dunno if it would work thru a adb push.

adb install fails: file already exists. Do I need to chmod the existing file in a shell first?

could work.

okay, I've mounted system as rw and chmodded Settings.apk as 04775, but I keep getting permission denied. How do I kill running apps in adb shell?

doubt you'll be able to do the customizations but you can use the stop and start commands in adb shell.

Tried it, nothing worked after issuing the stop command in adb shell. Had to battery pull.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App

adb shell
$ su
# stop
# mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p25 /system
# mv /system/app/settings.apk /system/app/settings.bak
# cp /sdcard/settings.apk /system/app
# start
assuming you've put the new settings.apk in your /sdcard folder.

That worked, it did push the new settings.apk. It even changed the icon when I click menu from the home screen. But when I click on settings, nothing happened . Oh well, Enomthr updated his rom so I'm happy again!

I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure the cyan settings are involved with the custom framework on cyan roms. Because the xml in order to edit things such as clock color are located in the framework-res.apk. if some of you guys are new to android or have never reallly messed areoud with apks or ne thing here's something fun to try while waiting for root. Take the framework res apk from a rom and put it on ur computer and rename it to .zip instead of .apk. and you can see you things work visually wise on your phone. This will help you a ton if you ever want to get into themeing to make custom themes when we have root.

I have actually the same question. Does it work if a push a Setting.apk into my ROM, or there are something related in framework?

on your computer put them in your working path so that you can do adb push whatever.apk /data/app_s/whatever.apk
or if you don't have adb do this with them on the root of your sdcard
Code:
mount /system
mount /data
mount /sdcard
cp /sdcard/framework-res.apk /system/framework-res.apk
cp /sdcard/Rosie.apk /data/app_s/Rosie.apk
cp /sdcard/HtcClockWidget.apk /data/app_s/HtcClockWidget.apk
(use the mv command it cp doesn't work)
reboot

actually it would be the recovery console because i do not believe that you can type "mount data" or "mount system" in the terminal and have it work, it will tell you the device or resource is busy.
also i use windows and i have adb.exe and AdbWinApi.dll in my system32 folder so i can use adb from any directory on my computer.
the working path is what appears by default when you open up command prompt (which for me is C:\users\david\ i use for adb commands do adb push desktop/what.ever [dir on phone] or adb push downloads/what.ever [dir on phone])
but as stated before drop the files into your tools folder and cd to your tools folder then adb push from there.

have any idea on how to get Plurk onto blur?

Remove ALL Sprint Crapware? (Q from an ex-WinMo Poweruser)

I moved from an HD2 to the Evo this week (no more TMobile, woot!). I am very familiar with custom WMO ROMS, Hard SPL, blah blah...
I have nearly zero Android development, custom ROM knowledge, etc, however.
I'd like to flash a custom ROM based on the factory, without all the Sprint programs preloaded.
Clearly I need to root; I am on steady ground with that knowledge. After that? Not so clear. There doesn't seem to be a thread with the steps I need to proceed.
Any info would be invaluable, thanks!
(PS - side question: why does Android launch all sort of processes in the background seemingly at random?)

This should be in Q & A.. But unless someone creates a rom with the apps removed. Its easier to just do it yourself.
If you did toasts method of rooting. Boot into recovery and type this
adb remount
adb shell
cd /system/app
ls
This displays all apps on the phone. Do this to delete them.
rm NameOfApp.apk
rm NameOfApp.odex
It is caps sensitive and make sure you type the apk exactly as its written.

any reason adb remount isn't working for me? I do adb devices and my devices is there but when i type adb remount i get "remount faild: Invalid argument"
I started Toasts root directions, placing PC36IMG.zip on the base directory of the SD card. Shut down, loaded with the Vol Down and Power buttons. The bootloader checked the file on the SD card but then stopped on the white screen.
It seems it was supposed to proceed automatically? But I am dropped off with options on the white screen: FASTBOOT, RECOVERY, CLEAR STORAGE, SIMLOCK, and HBOOT USB.
Directions show Vol Up and Down for previous and next and Power for select.
Alright, I resolved this issue. I recopied the file to the SD card and made sure to eject drive before shutting the device down. Seemed to make all the difference! Proceeding with the remainder of Toast's directions now...

rm failed for Sprint_NASCAR.apk, Directory not empty

That's Linux trying to protect you. Essentially the rm command by default just removes one file at a time.
Try...
rm -r NameOfFolder
...to delete recursively.

thread dead?
IDK if this threads still monitored by anyone, but here's my question: I don't use adb, but I just rused root explorer to locate sprint crap, and added a .bak to the end of all of them to essentially 'disable' them. Is this a safe method? Will Android system waste energy looking for them anymore (they no longer show in app tray, but are they still using resources) ? Thanks much.

I was just about to say something similar. I had uninstalled Nascar using Titanium Backup, and the found out that I cant do the 2.2 OTA unless its there. TB didn't have the ability to restore it for some reason, so I got an APK from XDA, and put it in the system/app folder via Root Explorer. Then, I had to reset the permissions to match the other APK's, and it showed up and launched perfectly. Even did an update. Much easier than all that adb stuff, I think.
I used system app uninstaller for a buck on the market.. Easy and all there with the icons for easy to find and delete sprint and gapps.

Thats a good way.. If something goes wrong just have to rename.

Flash this zip and it should remove most of the Sprint apps. It will back them up to /sdx on your SD card so if anything is removed that you want, it will still be there. It's signed to work with RA.
http://grathwohl.me/uploads/android/evo/Sprint-Apps-Remover-signed.zip
I've seen a few people reference my post, but my post was really just trying to ask if anyone knew if, now that I've renamed them, and they don't run, they shouldn't be using up resources? Right, is that correct, or am I wrong in thinkin this?
And thanks cosine83, that's a really helpful post for a lot of people.

JM6 & LCD Density

Hi there,
anyone could confirm?
Tab fw JM6 rooted ok with SuperOneClick
If I try to change LCD density with LCD Density Changer, nothing happens, it doesn't work
Same issue with Spare Parts, the program starts but then force close
Is there any other sw out there to change LCD density that works with JM6?
thanks
It's because BusyBox isn't installed. Go to LCD Density - Settings - Select make LCD my system density. As soon as you tick the box, it will say Cannot complete without busybox and will direct you to the market.
Download Busybox and all root apps will work.
Unlike Z4root, SuperOneClick doesn't install busybox, you need to do it manually.
great, thanks!
Or alternatively you can edit the build.prop and select the density you want in there, without adding any 3rd party programs.
I've set lcd density to 180
I've also installed LauncherPro with all widgets
The People widget is very big, is there any chance to resize it or put more than one widget in the same page (ex. People and Facebook widget)

Launcher pro paid version (sounds like you have it) has the ability to resize the widgets. Click and hold it in position, as if you are moving it, then release and you should be given the option to resize. Not sure how well it will work with changes to LCD density though.

Some widgets react OK to being sized differently than their expected size, but in my experience most get fairly mangled. What I think you actually need is to increase the number of rows and columns on your desktop to accommodate the increased screen real estate. You will need to switch to Launcher Pro or ADW though. I'm running a density of 200, with 6 rows and 7 columns which works well. A lot of the Samsung widgets seem to come in at 3 rows wide, which means that with a 6 row desktop you can now put 2 of them side by side.
I'm using ADW.Launcher with 200 instead of 240 LCD density, it works beautifully well in both portrait and landscape orientations !

Never had any issuewith widgets not working after changing the density, especially LPP widgets. They worked perfectly at 200 on the Tab and my Desire

If I change it to anything below 240 and open the stock email app, I get a little gap in the bottom when its in landscape. That's the only reason I don't use it

Agree that's a pitty, but then again I'm pleased to notice that most Galaxy Tab apps works without to much scaling problems on all densities. That's a big difference with the Galaxy S phone variants. On the Galaxy S variants most Samsung apps get all f'ed up with a different density.
I hope Google will support variable densities in the upcoming Android versions.
While a friend was using my tab, they changed the density to 100 (Thanks!). This caused my tab to reboot constantly and I cannot keep it on long enough to change LCD Density back.
Can anyone give me the files need to push from adb to change my density back to normal? Is it build.prop or something like that?
EDIT: I managed to adb pull my build.prop and edit it, but when I try to push it back I get permission denied.
when trying to mount with adb shell using mount /system -o rw,remount I get a usage error.

Not sure why your remount isn't working assuming you have root permissions. I presume you've typed something like this?
Code:
# su
# mount -o remount,ro -t rfs /dev/block/stl9 /system
(apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs), or are you trying to do it directly via adb? If so then you could always copy the build.prop file from /system to something writeable like /mnt/sdcard - edit it (or pull it with adb and edit it) then remount /system as rw and copy it back. Lots of ways really.
An alternative which I often use when not near a computer is to just edit the file using Root Explorer - a very useful tool though may not be an option for you right now if you can't actually launch the device . btw - I had issues with LCD Density app after the flash of the latest EU JM6 FW and found the manual edit was the only way it would persist over reboots. Not sure if that's just local to me as no-one else seems to have issues, but something to bear in mind if it happens to anyone else.

yeah the problem goes deeper. So I figured out that my tab is no longer rooted, and I can't root it again because I cannot put it back into debug mode. The system restarts itself before I can get to that screen.
I managed to adb pull, but I can't push back because I cannot gain permission. This may be the second tab I return for a new one.

If you can get an adb pull then you should be able to run a root script. There is a script posted in this section for installing clockworkmod via a Windows bat file or a Linux/OSX shell script. I personally had issues with the recovery part of the script and would not recommend running the whole process, but the bits that do the rooting worked well for me. It was simply a case of removing the section that added the recovery files and then it rooted fine. You could try that. Edit the run.sh or run.bat file and remove the section that pushes the recovery files. For run.sh you'd delete
Code:
if [ "$buildid" == "FROYO" ]; then
echo Push clockworkmod redirector files to device
echo
$adb push bin /system/bin/
echo Set permissions on clockworkmod redirector files
$adb shell chmod 755 /system/bin/recovery
$adb shell chmod 755 /system/bin/recoveryfiles
$adb shell chmod 755 /system/bin/recoveryfiles/*
$adb shell chmod 755 /system/bin/recoveryres
$adb shell chmod 755 /system/bin/recoveryres/*
echo
fi
or for run.bat remove
Code:
IF "%buildid%"=="FROYO" (
echo Push clockworkmod redirector files to phone
echo.
adb push bin /system/bin/
echo Set permissions on clockworkmod redirector files
adb shell chmod 755 /system/bin/recovery
adb shell chmod 755 /system/bin/recoveryfiles
adb shell chmod 755 /system/bin/recoveryfiles/*
adb shell chmod 755 /system/bin/recoveryres
adb shell chmod 755 /system/bin/recoveryres/*
echo.
)
Your mileage may vary and I take no responsibility etc etc (I've only tested the Mac/Linux script and not the Windows batch file), but may be worth a punt before you look at returning it.

****, I know the problem. That's why I advice users in the help (i'm the developer of LCD Density Changer) to first do a preview before changing the system density. I used to have a so called boot monitor exactly for these problems.
I will put up an extra warning in the app or maybe force a preview before users can safe the density. Anyway, sorry for the trouble.
But why don't you flash some new firmware with odin or with kies?
Thanks paulshields, I'll try what you said and post my results.

Unfortunately I am using the VZW tab and there is no firmware yet. If all else fails I can wait, for something to come out for my the my tab. Also don't worry I am not blaming you or anyone for that matter. Hopefully I get this fixed!
The script doesn't seem to be working. I think it's because I'm not in debug mode (which I can't get to). Thanks anyway.

Hey guys, I wanted to modify the framework in cyanogenmod 7. What I did was se this command in terminal:
su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
rm /system/app/SystemUI.apk
so as you can see, i deleted the framework and after that i couldnt do anything in terminal. I turn off the phone and then i usb mounted the phone to adb push the moddified systemui.apk, i was able to push the apk, but when i restarted the phone, there was no framework.. any ideas as to why that is.. maybe the apk file is corrupted?
Its named signedsystemui.apk! Did you push it with the right name?
Sent from my......ummm...let me get back at'chya!
I don't usually delete things before pushing new file and I don't normally recommend signing system/apps.
This is what I would do. Keep in mind, your mod (whatever you may have done with it) could simply be a little goofed up.
Code:
adb remount
adb shell
stop
cp system/app/SystemUI.apk /system/app/SystemUI.bak
adb push <path to>/signedSystemUI.apk /system/app/SystemUi.apk
start
exit
In the above, <path to> refers to the location of your modified aoj. For me, it would normally be "Users/tommytomatoe/Mod/app.apk". What I do is drag and drop the apk into the terminal after typing "adb push".
If it boots up after issuing adb shell start, then you're golden! If not, then do this. Keep in mind, if you're in splash screen you will want to reboot into recovery first and mount system using the options in the menu. If you're in boot loop with bootanimation, go ahead and issue these commands:
Code:
adb remount
adb shell
stop
mv system/app/SystemUI.bak /system/app/SystemUI.apk
start
exit
Now, you will have original apk and it should boot up. Go back to ground zero and remodify your apk and make sure you've taken correct steps.
All i did was change some pngs. I did sign the apk... maybe thats why it didnt work..When changing pngs to the systemui.apk, do i also have to modify the framework-res.apk?

It appears the newer gb stuff has elements in framework res as well as system ui. It wont hurt to change both if same files exist in both. Tjats what I think.
And also, don't sign system apk. All the system apk prefer to have same signature. Signing one would result in having to sign all in most cases...

[Q] Customize Data Icons

Hi all
Does anyone know of an app that gives you the ability to change the data icons on a Touchwiz rom?
I am trying to get it so that i have all the icons from verizon except the 4g LTE one.
Anyone have any ideas? or even better a solution?
Thanks

You're gonna have to mod your systemui.apk. I think just changing the names of the PNG files is enough.

Yeah you can manually replace each icon with an icon of the same size and name.
You can use 7-zip, since you're not editing any xml no need to decompile.

Thanks for the info.
As im kinda new to this i was wondering what i need to use to do this.
I have 7zip for opening and replacing the PNGs. But isnt the systemui.apk a read only file that cant be touched normally?
Any suggestions on removing/replacing it.
Thanks

You need root to access system files.
You could also try ADB pull the file.
use command
Code:
adb pull /system/app/SystemUI.apk/

Having root access allows for you to write to the system partition. But the apk itself is just a compressed encrypted zip.

No back slash on the adb pull command at the end

Thanks for all the help.
Figured out how to get the SystemUI.apk. Have changed a few data icons.
Was just wondering how to replace the current SystemUI.apk with the altered one.
Any help appreciated.

Thanks, still learning about adb so your posts is always more informative than what I know.
Thanks all.
I successfully pulled then pushed the systemui.apk on my s4.
Now to try some more radical data icon changes

OK quick question.
How do you make the System folder RW?
I ended up using ADB to Pull and Push, but i could only push after i used Root Explorer to change the System folder to RW.
Im guessing thats not the normal way. But hey it worked.
What would be the usual way of making it RW? (I have root so its not that).
Thanks
ThunderBob
I guess something odd is going on.
Pulled SystemUI.apk.
switched names of the 2 data icons i wanted to switch.
Pushed SystemUI to phone.
Set permissions to 644.
and everything seemed to work. Icon i wanted is showing in the status bar.
But now Phone/Contacts/Messages dont load.
If i change my Build.prop (ro.product.name) to something else. I get the icons for that provider and everything works again.
Any ideas?

The 'adb remount' command is what you use.
