How do i re-boot in safe mode?? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an app that is crashing at the start-up of my phone and the error loops and will not let me get to the home screen to uninstall it. I have searched this site and google for how to start the phone in Safe mode so I can uninstall and can't find it anywhere! Can someone re-post or tell me where to find the info?
Thank you so much!

i dont think there is a safe mode, but you can always factory data reset from recovery.
If i recall thats holding power + vol down when your phone is turned completely off.

there is also a safe mode on the slide so there may also be one on this phone, when/if you figure it out please post

I been reading online and it looks like most androids have safe mode and you get to it by.
*Powering Off the phone
*Powering on the phone
*Pushing and holding the menu button when you see the Logo. i.e g1, g2 my touch, nexus etc...
I would try but i dont have my phone with me right now my girl has its. But it wouldnt hurt if you tryed it

Hum y r u laughting? He isnt talking about recovery he is talking about safe mode. Do ur home work before you post. Safe mode disable auto start apps so you can uninstall apps if ur in a fc loop. Back in the g1 openhome days it came in handy.

I'll take a stab and guess that he's laughing at the fact that the OP said "safe mode", which is commonly found on Windows OS, but since the Android is running on top of a Linux kernel, that may have tickled his funny bone.

Well, there is/was a known safe mode for the older G1/MT3G/Hero, so I guess the last laugh is on him. :x

Maybe but now a days safe mode is just what stuff call it now. On cars its limp mode but newer car makers are saying safe mode now

Yea I tryed all the stuff nothing is working.
Holding menu, trackpad, menu on keyboard, Nothing that worked for the nexus, droids, evo or g1/my touch works.
There all the same tho just holding menu while it boots up but none of that works

I didnt own my MT3G long enough to find out that there was such a thing called SAFE mode... To be honest I tried to stay from XDA, because it's so easy to get pulled into the rom flashing business.
And yet... here I am
I meant no harm... its just that I was sitting here at work and I couldnt stop laughing.... but now that I know such a thing exists, I stand corrected.

This is a problem
This is a big problem. I need to be able to debug an application bug that causes the phone not to start up, and going through the factory reset is just too harsh. This is especially a problem for end-users that experience such problems, and they end up losing data due to having to factory reset. Safe mode should be mandatory on all android phones, IMHO. If anyone is reading this over at Google or phone manufacturer's end PLEASE include Safe Mode in every android phone model.

If you are rooted, you can boot into recovery and use adb to remove the offending app.

Press down the keyboard "S" key (yeah S for Safe mode) at HTC logo during boot.

Whoa, nice find, if you found it! I just held the S button down the entire time through bootup (idk if you had to but I did) and I'm in safe mode. To bad op didn't find this out earlier

If only I had found this post 10 days earlyer, now my phone is in the shop and who know when I'll get it back...

If this for real? Hold down s?

sure is, but it wont do much accept it wont allow /data apps from loading - truthfully this isnt be the most helpful way of fixing anything thats why it isnt really talked about.
i could see if you had a malicious app wreaking havoc you could find this useful, if you dont want to wipe all. but lets say you overclocked your phone too much and it wont boot,
it would be easier to just flash a kernel on top of the rom without a wipe.
granted i dont think safe mode would even reset clock speeds.... time to test... eh, too much work

Wow makes me wonder what all the other buttons will do... Press W for warp speed

Im having the same issue..weird!
Well known issue with CWR. Koush said its not high on his priorities. You could download the source and try to figure it out though.
hmmm, ok. im not an expert with doing things from source. somone else maybe, with more skills?
It's an issue when the charger is plugged in. It should shut down fine if you haven't got the charger connected.
there is nothing wrong with being in recovery while charging -- uses very very very little power and when your ready to turn on the phone, you just hit reboot and your done. Or maybe you want to clear cache before you boot? or maybe you want to backup before you boot or maybe you wanted to fix permissions before you boot? i mean -- its actually a blessing in disguise. I would be more annoyed if this was an issue with the G1 because it was so easy to get to recovery as it was (power and back button) whereas with the g2 if you wanted to get to recovery you'd have to either use adb or its PC counterparts, a reboot app in the rom, or by booting into fastboot and then 3 more steps after that to get to recovery.
its like living next door to the convenience store, bank, grocery store, and the massage parlor. one stop shoppin -- no hard trudging around to get places.
it is a benefit... yes its a bug...(a bug with benefits heh) but frankly i've put in a request that if koush updates recovery i want to be able to "keep" this bug.

Talking about the screen?
Hold the back button. On my Pulse it turns the screen off. Or totally black, I can't remember.
Better yet, turn it upside down.
Or, leave it switched on.

First time I discovered this bug I was about 9 hours late. I grabbed my hot ass phone n unplugged. I put it infront of the ac vent so it could cool down. After about ten minutes I powered up n the setcpu widget told me the phone was at 120 something degrees.
Needless to say my first g2 never ran right after words. Too many random reboots n odd graphical glitches.
I unrooted and cried bad hinges so tmobile would replace it.
Damn shame its not on his priorities list...

[Q] I need help, possible bricked phone

I tried to flash the aokp m5 rom but didn't flash the el26 cwm file. Now when i try to boot the phone, it doesn't start. the blue light just lights up and stays light untill i pull the battery. I also tried to get into recovery and it just does the same thing. I downloaded odin, but im not sure what im supposed to do with it. if anyone knows how to help, i would be extremely grateful. Thank you
Pull battery, put back in, hold volume down to get in download mode, start Odin on pc , plug in phone, press volume up, Odin should respond with COM# click the phone button and select your stock from such as the cwm el26. Just read the forums. Don't feel bad it happens to all of us once in awhile. Thankfully I have managed to fix most of my screw ups. Next time just read everything and save yourself hours......experience
But then again that could make it worse. So for ya sake use the search button
My phone doesn't allow me to get into download mode mode... Does that mean it is bricked?
Well I have more than once brought my device that I though would never come back. I know I have got ton my phone and my friends att infuse to connect to Odin without actually getting a screen on the phone and was able to get a recovery to restore the phone back to normal. From my experience though its been hard to brick these things... I sometimes wonder if people bricking is just user error.... knock on wood....

I don't know what that other guy was saying but you have to hold the volume down Button and the power button until it shows the custom OS menu the press volume up and then download sfhubs one-click EL29 and then open it, its in development fyi, connect your cable to your PC and your phone and the program will have a yellow box light up that will say COM#, don't worry about the number next to COM, then press start and wait until it reboots. Do not unplug the phone or close the program. If it works for you please respond back here so others can hear the results.

Is your phone recognized by adb? Maybe try "adb reboot download"?
Also if you read up about a jigg for the epic touch, in case this doesn't work, them that could also fix it. You might need to spend something though but I can't clarify this because i've never bricked before.

Yea he's explained it better than be. I'll just be posting from my laptop here on out. On screen keyboards kill me. I miss my g1s QWERTY. Ah well.
I press volume down and power but the custom os screen doesn't show up, all the phone does flash the blue notification light and the screen looks as if it is off.
This isnt something that a jig can help and for everyone else trying to help he cant access download mode or recovery.
You're most likely hard bricked and the only thing you could try is to leave the battery out overnight then try to turn the phone on again. If you still have black screen with just the notification LED on then the last resort would be a jtag service which isnt guaranteed to work either.
This is a known issue from wiping any partitions on an ics kernel.
What would a jtag service be?
You're going to need a USB jig to get your computer to recognize your phone to download the firmware over the current one. Wait till tomorrow if someone doesn't respond because i'm assuming all the devs and admins are knocked out and they are the ones who can help.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Geez a lot got posted while I was typing.
Seeing as how you can't get into download mode or recovery I'm afraid you're out of luck. (unless the jigg thing works, which I don't think will at this point)
This is a hard lesson to learn but exactly why you don't take any shortcuts when flashing custom ROMs.
What is a jtag service, and how would I go about it if I tried to get it done?
Thanks for helping them out! Its late and I forgot about the overnight battery pull and jtag.

Do a search in this forum, since there's been a lot of bricking I'm sure you'll find a ton of threads concerning this.

Thats one of the companies offering jtag services. I believe some people have used it before but im not sure of their results.
Yeah, I'm only sixteen, so I'm trying to grasp all these different things. I'm used to htc because i had an evo, then i got an evo 3d. I use the e4gt as a second phone, but all the things for a rooted samsung are completely different compared to an htc. Thank you for all your help guys. I have learned my lesson now
Good luck. I hope the overnight battery pull helps or that the jtag folks can get you up and running.
For the overnight battery pull, when I try to boot it, should I try to put it into download mode? Or just plain boot? Thanks again

Galaxy S3 Won't Power On

Hi , I'm having problems with my Galaxy T999. I have rooted and have not yet installed any kernels/roms. The only thing i did was installed a couple apps from the play store . and wanted to check out the CWM recovery menu and was going to try to installed "hyperX camera mod". First thing i did was shut off the phone . Then pressed on the Volume up+Home+Power button . After doing that my phone didn't turn on or anything , no vibration or anything . I hooked it on with my computer and press the power button and it was able to connect and then disconnected. I am at lost now and can't seem to find any answer . Have looked every where not sure what to do now. Any solution will be much appreciated .
***
It seems to disconnect due to no driver found for QHUSUB_DLOAD .
Without any solutions I'll probably gonna get my phone replace . T_T
Does your phone disconnect immediately, or does it stay connected for a brief amount of time? If it stays connected briefly, try using adb during this period to boot into recovery. The command is "adb reboot recovery" (without the quotes).

Try to remove your battery then plug in charger. See if you can turn on. If you can turn it on, leave it 30 minutes. Then put in the battery.
By the looks of the result the computer gives you when you plug it in, seems it is hard bricked! Are you sure you didn't flash anything from the I9300 section like a rom?

The hyper x camera mod isnt entirely for our phone. I've read that it's flashable to our phone though, so I'm not sure what's going on here. Maybe the OP needs to link where he got the mod. Ih and stay away from the intl version all together.

SGS3 T999v wont start up.
My sgs3 t999v would turn off by itself every other time I hit the lock button.
like I would be txting and then if I hit the lock button it would turn off.
So I though a factory reset would fix the problem. (volume up + home).
after the reset it still kept turning off randomly.
and now I cant even get it to the normal interface. or get in to the manual reset mode.
Device was previously jail broken, however was returned back to stock and was working fine for 3 months.
I had my otterbox on for every fall my phone had, so I dont think it would be a hardware issue.
the phone was running 4.1.1 I believe.
stock rom.

Can you get download mode? (Volume down, HOME and power)
Even though you have a case on it, it sounds like it was probably damaged by one of the falls. Most cases as far as I'm aware mostly protect the display. The shock from impact can still damage internal components, even with a case built with this in mind.

Hey thanks for replying!
I drained the battery and got a new charge in it and managed to get it booted up
however now the problem of the lock button is still here.
like if i use it to lock my screen it just turns off on me, and it takes multiple times for me to get the phone up and running again.
you could see if you could find a widget or widgets that will basically put a button on your screen that can power off, enable lock screen, reboot recovery/download, etc.
Then just use the HOME button to turn the screen back on.
It sounds to me like a hardware problem, but if you can flash another Rom and do a full wipe/factory reset you'll know for sure.
I hope this helps. Not sure what else you can do besides getting it repaired or replaced unfortunately.
Maybe someone else will have a better idea though.

[Q] Rooted phone and now wont turn on

I recently Rooted my sealed samsung galaxy s3 without having a clue what i'm doing i downloaded this program called snapdragon to root it along with ODIN. The phone rooted fine everything was working okay, I even downloaded an app to see if the root was successful and indeed it was. I shut the phone down wake up in the morning to turn it back on and I get zero response. Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Yes of course I've tried leaving it plugged in for several hours and the night before the phone was at 100% charge so I doubt battery is the issue.
Tks though

Ummm seems like u can fix it.... go bak to stock using odin as well and go back to stock and i believe cwm is going to be gone so as your root access so re-do it but this time guide yourself through a turorial(a.k.a google) and since you have to clue i think the best choice for you is to find a video tutorial in case your doubting or getting confused with the steps or sometimes to see what you did wrong that caused the phone to misbehave...

This is why I hate one-click-root kits, you get people doing things to their phones they don't understand, wreck it and come here saying "help, I don't know what do do!" Something like this you really should at least understand the basics. I hope this gets you more involved in researching what's actually happening. It's important to know what's happening to your device as well as why, that way if something goes badly you'll have an idea of how to get out of it.
Sorry, enough lecturing, let's see if we can get something going here. Give a bit more detail about what happens. You're phone is shut down, right? You hit the power button and no response, like the battery is actually out of the phone, or does it turn on and give you a blank screen? If it was a brick, I'd think you'd at least see the boot screen before everything goes wrong.
Ok, I'm going to go ahead and assume you've removed the battery. If you haven't, do so now.
If it still won't turn on, try actually holding the power button down for 30-60 seconds. I had a scary moment with my phone yesterday, rebooted it running Wicked v5 on Trinity and the screen just died. I've been running that rom for a week with just a couple of issues here and there, nothing out of the ordinary. Pulled the battery and tried again, nothing. After holding the power button down for a bit I felt a quick vibrate, then the boot logo came up. No idea why, I'm going to have to look into it.
Beyond that, I'm brand new to this phone and Sammy's Android devices so I'm still learning myself. HTC phones I could help out more with, but I'm still a bit clueless with this thing.

Yes I have taken out the battery replaced it several times. I hit the volume home and power button several times. When I do that I get a zero response nothing shows up I hear no sound its as if the phone is just completely dead. One thing I did realise is when I plug it into the computer and press the power button what would happen is it would connect and automatically disconnect
Can you get into Download mode? Volume down + Home + Power button?

Don't forget to let go of the power button when going into recovery.
Have you done what the other post said?
Hold power for about 10-30 seconds. Does it do anything? Do you feel a verrrry slight vibration?
When you plug it in without doing anything else does the computer see it in device manager? How about if you press power once? Or holding power down?
Does it register that its charging?
This may sound dumb but did you try powering up without the phone plugged into anything?

I recently Rooted my sealed samsung galaxy s3 without having a clue what i'm doing i downloaded this program called snapdragon to root it along with ODIN. The phone rooted fine everything was working okay, I even downloaded an app to see if the root was successful and indeed it was. I shut the phone down wake up in the morning to turn it back on and I get zero response. Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Ummm. Sorry but maybe im missing something? Your first sentence in your op says you didnt have a clue what you were doing....
And where is it supposed to infer that you've done everything already?
Imo you have been getting 'real' advice but from what I see you haven't 'really' answered anyones suggestions.
No one can help you if you dont tell us what exactly you have tried and what what happened when you did.
For example in your only response you mentioned hitting the volume and home keys a bunch of times....what exactly do you mean by this? Did you hold them while trying to power up? Volume up or down? Did you release any of them during that process, and if so which and when?
Its kinda hard to help someone who doesn't have a clue what they are doing and only responds that hes done everything common sense dictates.
I seriously mean no offence but to me common sense would dictate that you not try rooting or anything if you know you dont know what you're doing.
It would also dictate that if you want further help with this you should go back and respond to what everyone suggested.
Like I said, im not trying to offend, just help.

I am having the same issue
I just tried flashing Android Revolution to my phone. I went through the whole set up process. Went to reboot then it went blank. Nothing. I get nothing when I plug it in. The computer doesn't recognize any device attached to it. I've tried all the ideas listed here and I get nothing. It's as if the phone is completely dead. When I flashed the rom my battery was at 90%. I've used various roms on different phones and this was the first time I did it to my Galaxy s3 and this is the first time it's ever happened. Talk about frustrating.

[Q] My TMO S3 (T-999) will not turn on.

I didn't have luck finding an answer to this on the forums so I figured I'd make a new post. I have been running a version (not sure which) of Liquid Smooth for a few months. Yesterday, I noticed my phone was on a boot loop. It would vibrate, show the Samsung Galaxy S3 screen and then turn off. I pulled the battery and memory card and tried again. It still wouldn't come on. I pulled the battery and then rebooted to recovery mode. I went there to wipe and reboot. When I tried to do that it said something like, "what you are looking for can't be found". I pulled the battery again but this time when I tried to turn it back on it did nothing. I have no vibrations, I have nothing on my screen. I'm not sure what could have happened because I haven't made a change to my phone for quite some time. Any ideas?

Battery is going bad or the hardware is going bad.
What recovery and version?
Have you tried booting into recovery or download mode?
Take battery out and put back in:
Recovery: volume up, home button, power
Download mode: volume down, home button and power

I'm not able to get the phone to come on so I don't know the versions of anything I've used. All I know is my phone is the T-999. Sorry, I know that's probably no help at all.
You don't have a spare battery do you? If not, you should see if you can find someone you know that has one. It could be that you battery just went bad.

I tried all of this but did not have any luck. The phone doesn't do anything. It doesn't make any sense how it can just stop working out of nowhere like this. Wouldn't it mess up immediately after I rooted/added a custom ROM if I did something wrong rather than a few months later? I'm afraid that the phone may be done for. : (

I hate to say it, but usually when something like this happens it's most likely to be hardware related. If you don't have access to a spare, go to a T-Mobile store and ask to borrow a battery to see if it'll power up with a known good one. Batteries usually don't just die like that, but it can happen.
So you don't get a short vibe or anything out of it? What about when you hold the power button for about 10seconds? If you remove the battery and plug it in, do you get an led lit up? How about with the battery in?
If the battery turns out to be good, you could attempt the debrick method by KAsp3rd stickies in development. I don't see why it would be a brick, but at this point I'd try anything available just to be positive.
If you have insurance on it, it may be time to consider using it.
Sorry to hear this is happening to you man. These S3's are starting to get a little old though, and no matter how careful we are, they do suffer more abuse than any other electronics we may use. I'm seeing more and more posts like yours recently, I'm sorry to say.
Keep us updated on it, and good luck with it!
