[Guide] MT4G Remapping Genius button to Google Search - myTouch 4G Android Development

Here is the guide to remap the Genius button to Google search.
A press will give you text search and long press will give you voice search.
Items needed:
Root access (Perm root required as not having perm root will result in changes being undone on reboot)
Root explorer
MT4G
Fingers
If you misspell the word you will lose button functionality. Your Power button and volume buttons won't work. All is not lost though, pull the battery follow the steps again. I would recommend making a backup of the file before you edit it (Root explorer makes a backup, but you can never make too many. That and Root explorer makes a backup of the file before editing).
Steps:
1. Open Root explorer and navigate /system/usr/keylayout/ (That is scroll down and press the system folder. Scroll down again and press the usr folder. Press the keylayout folder)
2. At the top right corner of the screen press mount r/w
3. Long press "glacier-keypad.kl"
4. A screen will pop up, scroll down to "Open in Text Editor"
5. key 183 will say FUNC_4, change this to SEARCH (all caps)
6. Press the menu button
7. Press "Save Changes"
8. Long press power button
9. Press Restart
10.Try it out, and say thank you after it works.
Sorry but I was always told to explain it as if you were 10yrs old to prevent questions. Wasn't trying to offend anyone's intelligence.
Also while you're in there if you want to add WAKE_DROPPED after HOME, your phone will now wake when you press the home button.
If someone wants to make a guide for how to do this with adb, post it and I will update the op.
Update: The google voice search on this phone sucks balls. Go to the market and download Vlingo. The first time you long press search after this it will give you the option to make it the default voice search. Imo it is superior to the native voice search, at least on this phone.
Update: The latest update for Voice Search has fixed whatever the problem may have been. But Vlingo is still a great app so feel free to give it a try.
Update: Mftek has given you another alternative. Please see this post For instruction on how to get Google search on a short press, and the Genius button on a long press.
Update

Absolutely genius... I will try it soon.
Before I do... we can reverse by simply changing it from SEARCH back to FUNC_4, I assume?

Already tried to change it back and it worked no problem.

You are the man! Thanks
Works perfect

OMG this has been bugging me since my first boot! Thank you!!

Tried this while temprooted with visionary and didn't work. Copied the file to sdcard and edited it there, then moved it back to its original location, overwriting the original.
On reboot nothing changed. What'd I do wrong?

Brilliant!

Ah... So is S-OFF required to achieve real permanent root? Or can I just use visionary to temp root --> perm root --> remount system as r/w and then go on my merry way?

Perm root is required, I have updated op to say that. Sorry for the confusion. S-off is required for this to stick, unless someone with S-on figures out a way to make it work.

Ah ok, this will just have to wait a little then.

Hmm I just noticed something strange when I did this, my text on my lockscreen disappeared after doing this .. along with when I press the power button, the text for each option was gone .. restoring back to stock the text is back .. weird.

Worked perfectly!!! Home button now wakes screen and Genius button does Google search. Thank you so much.

Just did it without any hitches. Added Home_Dropped as well. THANK YOU DUDE!!! This made my day even better. Rooted and key re-mapping sweet.

wow awesome that was fast

Ok problem figured out, it was the font I replaced in my system it started acting weird thanks again!

I actually went back to the genius button, for some reason the voice search function could not get a single command right, it couldnt understand "call home" in a perfectly quiet environment, let alone any other commands, like texts, but thanks for the write up.

I haven't rooted yet and I've also noticed that voice search performs surprisingly poorly on this phone. Wonder what's up with that?

I'm looking into a solution. It has nothing to do with changing it though. It's hearing it correctly, but not understanding commands. I say "call blah" and the search box comes up with call blah. Not cool.

Install the GSM version of this and SDKcerts (both at the link). Then, reboot, go to Start>Settings>System>Keyboard Config. When you get there, go to Menu>Add Key, and press the home key. Then, for "Action", set it to "Emulate Key Press", and scroll all the way down to "91 Left Win Key", and select that. Hit okay, and then hit Update Config. You may need to reboot, but otherwise, that should work.

Copy and Paste broken?

I can't seem to copy and paste texts anymore on my S3. Here's what happens:
Long press on text I want to copy
Text automatically highlighted and I get the buttons up top
I pressed the copy button and the top menu closed
In another text field, I do a long press
Intead of the Paste popup button, I get a Clipboard popup button that doesn't do anything when I press it
Any idea how I can fix this?
Thanks in advance

Sometimes I have to press the copy button twice and make sure it said text copied.
Interesting. I just realized it doesn't say text copied anymore. I just found out that if I try to copy the content of an SMS message or a Whatsapp message, the program will crash.
Any other ideas?
Been broken for me too. Haven't been able to find a fix. On stock and not rooted.

Same here, crashes any app in which I try to copy/paste from. Actually crashes during the copy portion in any app.
Running stock, ICS, on Verizon, how is this not a bigger deal? I plan on posting a video of the issue later.

What app are you trying to do this from? Each may have their own options, but the stock email is one I'll use as an example.
- Long press text (as you mentioned)
- Select text, ensure you choose the clipboard icon, at this point I do get the message "copied to clipboard"
- Choose another app, or choose to create a new email, etc..... long press and you should get the "paste" and "clipboard" option.... that's what I get anyways.
I also tested on the stock browser and works fine. Did you install any MOD's, etc?
I've noticed the same thing on my SGS3 (AT&T) started couple of weeks ago maybe... I can only assume it happened due to an app being updated. I'm not able to copy from website to text. If I try and copy from text app (stock) it crashes... Wonder what could have caused this.

My biggest fustration of all time on Android is with copy and paste. Is this an application developer problem? I can't tell you how many times I've tried to copy and paste between apps or even the same app but to avail just fustration. Either the selection handles don't work properly or after the "copy" and an attempt to "paste" NOTHING!
Chrome has been busted for a while. Default browser still works for me.

Just noticed copy causes native Gmail app to crash -_- all of this worked just fine when I got the phone when it had first come out. This must be cause by a recent update.

I'm also having this same problem and it only started recently. I have no idea what caused it and what update may have triggered this. Every time I try to copy anything in any program it crashes. It's so frustrating! Also run un-rooted phone with stock software. Maybe it's time to root?

Flashing a rom will fix the problem... But I'm holding out for stock jelly bean before I root/flash. Anyone have more info on this issue?!
Samsung s3
Fix for ROOTED users...
"1. boot recovery (CWM) > advanced > wipe cache
2. reboot phone > Root Explorer > delete /data/clipbord/*
3. reboot recovery again > advanved > fix permissions
4. reboot phone > it's fine"
Found this on Phandroid. But haven't found a fix for non-root. There is also another thread on here somewhere about this issue(merge possibly?)
Here is also a link to the discussion on Phandroid.

OMG thank you soo much. I had this problem before and the only solution I found at this time was to backup everything with Titanium, than do a factory reset, and finaly restore everything. It worked but it was a real pain in the a**.
I'm so glad there is a 60 sec solution.
By the way I did it in a different order to be faster and it worked :
1. Delete everything in folder /data/clipboard/
2. Reboot recovery, wipe cash
3. Stay in recovery --> advance -->fix permission
4. Reboot and enjoy copy/paste again
Again thank you.
So the problem seems to be the clipboard gets full? Lol hope this gets fixed.

Ditto on having this issue. Glad there's a solution if rooted. Wish they would send an update to fix it for those not rooted. Factory reset is ridiculous. I'm not going to do that every 2 months, which is now long I've had the gs3 (obviously this will happen again if the root cause isn't fixed)
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 [AT&T GS3 Stock Rom] using xda-developers app
This is temporary - it will have to be done again when the cache fills up again.
Similarly there is a temporary solution for non-rooted phones - factory restore is supposed to provide the same solution, just a bit more time consuming with having to restore everything.
that's crazy .. does samsung expect us to do a hard reset every few months ?

I think you mean the Menu key. Perhaps its broken. If you have root, you can edit the file "/system/usr/keylayout/keypad-zeus.kl" to change the function of each physical buttons. You could for example remap the Search button to Menu.

By malfunctioning you mean your buttons are broken then yes. Of you want to avoid this issue in the future, buy a Nexus.
Enable root permission for ES File Explorer, copy the file to your sdcard, tap and hold on the file and choose Open As -> Text -> Es text editor. Edit the file to remap the button to how you like it. Copy it back to its original location. Tap and hold on the file again and choose Permission. Set the permission to rw-r-r.
Also if you know how to install custom roms, with Slim Bean rom you can enable onscreen button.

[How-To][ROOT] Edit/Swap hardware keys on OOS double tap and long press too.

Hi all, i've jumped from OOS to CM12.1 and CM13 (and cm13 based roms) for some time, but today i wanted to give another shot to OOS 2.2.0 (and wanted to try boeffla's kernel as CM isn't official yet).
And i remembered why i could not stay on OOS after a few seconds... i really hate the hardware keys setup (recents-home-back).
I'm used to have Menu-Home-Back (and recents access from long press home, or press home from nova launcher).
I've been reading and then learning many things in the past few weeks, so i though i should try to edit those keys just like we did on CM, even if before switching to CM i've looked around and didn't find anything working to change these.
So, here it is.
What you need:
Rooted phone and file manager with root access (there are many but i love FX file explorer, and the root add-on is free).
You need to go to /system/usr/keylayout
Then make a backup of the Generic.kl file (to make it easier i make an archive of it by long press on the file, then archive, but a simple copy and paste will do).
After that, don't forget to unlock the system partition if needed (tap the little lock and accept to open it on fx file explorer).
Open Generic.kl with file editor.
What you need to know is that left key is key number 139, middle one is number 172 and right one is 158.
Functions that can be affected are: MENU HOME BACK APP_SWITCH VOICE_ASSIST.
But for some obscure reason, MENU acts like APP_SWITCH in oxygen OS, so the trick is to replace MENU with MENU VIRTUAL (this will emulate Menu button from on screen navbar, but you don't need to activate the navbar).
So, if you want for example this layout: Menu-Home-Back
You'll need to edit the Generic.kl and replace the Line
key 139 MENU
with
key 139 MENU VIRTUAL
(key 158 BACK and key 172 HOME don't need to change).
Another interesting point is that if you use xposed installer and Gravity Box LP, you can assign different functions to double press or long press on buttons, but it's working only with on screen navbar buttons... you see where i'm trying to get ?
If you modify the generic.kl file and replace MENU with MENU VIRTUAL and BACK with BACK VIRTUAL... then you'll be able to add custom actions with Gravity Box... like the one I really miss, hold back to kill.
I didn't try to replace HOME with HOME VIRTUAL as i can configure long press and double tap home from oxygen OS, but it may work exactly the same if you want something special from Gravity box.
For exemple, my setup is like that:
Menu-home-back
Menu long press => Switch last app
Home long press => Recent apps
Back long press => Kill foreground app
Double Tap Menu => Google Now
Double Tap Home => Screen off
Double Tap Back => Nothing
To sum up, on the phone, keys are:
key 139 - key 172 - key 158
You can affect different general functions to these, like:
MENU
HOME
BACK
APP_SWITCH
VOICE_ASSIST
and maybe more
You can add VIRTUAL behind the function to emulate the on screen navbar buttons (and it seems required for the menu, as it still calls the recent apps in OOS), and then you can add double tap or long press functions with gravity box.
You don't need to enable the navbar to get them working.
I don't know if i've been clear enough, as i'm not used to this kind of things (i wonder if that's not my first thread on XDA...), but i just hope this will be useful to some of you,
have a great day.
[Edit: Forgot to mention you need to reboot the device when it's done]
Great thread. Will test
Got a bit of an issue... I just experimented with this and it was providing very odd results. So, I copied the backup generic file back to the location... restarted the phone. Now, no buttons do anything. There's no way for me to get home so a restart is the only option I have by forcefully turning off the phone. I'm not sure what to do, the file looks absolutely fine. Any help please? I don't know what to do... I don't want to reflash the rom..
If you restored the original file, at the original place, I don't know why this would not get you back...

Yes you can, but the file isn't the same, you should edit:
system/usr/keylayout/synaptics-rmi.kl
If you want to swap keys, simply switch the numbers (139 with 158), it's exactly the same as modifying the functions, but easier to type, especially on a phone.
It doesn't work for me. I added virtual at menu and back. Changed gravitybox back long press and double tap to kill foreground app. Single tap of back still not working.
Have i missed out anything? Oss 2.20 here.

I can try to upload my generic.kl file if you want, just to see if it works for you as it does for me (this way we will know if it's this file related or not).
You should have menu-home-recents.
Rename the file (remove the .txt, i could not join a .kl file, invalid).
Maybe check the permissions too.

You should check if A you have a text editor that supports editing in system partition and B if you have root file explorer that supports writing in system partition (and permissions). I would recommend es file explorer, just for this particular task. Afterwards just delete the file explorer.
The easy way is to delete the file in keylayout and write the file (with es file explorer) from OP couple of posts ago in keylayout direction. Reboot and also enable masterswitch in gravitybox. Voila, this method can't go wrong and works always.
I have es explorer and root browser. I am able to change permission too. Also reboot but no effect.
Anyone else tried?

Hi,
Applied without problem, just I can't set double tap action on the Home button.
I don't know why double tap doesn't work just for the home button. No problem with menu or back settings or on long press.
I think that Nova breaks this setup.
My conf :
OOS 2.2X, Xposed 80, Gravity Box 5.3.3, Nova lastest release
Edit : When I revert to the original file, the default setting (Settings > Buttons) Double tap for the Home buton is ignored.
