Slow UMTS - Touch Pro, Fuze Android Development

Hi guys!
I'm on XDAndroid 2.2 .
I'm under good coverage but the UMTS connection is very slow, no more then 40kbps, vs 3mbps with WM.
Why?
Is it possible to fix?
Tks a lot!

UMTS?

Ok, I use the official dopod WM6 .. and I'm sure it's not related but for some reason I get a constant 3G/HSPDA connection which I NEVER had at my house.. and when I get a phone call it says UMTS AT&T .. anyone know what the UMTS is?
Umts=wcdma=3g
universal mobile telecommunications system..based on 3g
http://www.tech-faq.com/hsdpa.shtml
Per Tech-Fac: HSDPA is associated with the various Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks including the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM).
Madcap...That is good

If I choose AUTO in phone/band, it will constantly show up UMTS, and the reception will be really bad in my place. (Battery will run out in a day) But if I choose GSM, first off, reception is great & my battery is good for 3-4 days.
Is 3G that power hungry? Or it's simply due to bad 3G reception in my area?
Cheers,
Richard
its a combination of both.

I live Center of manchester in UK, i have 100% connection to UMTS, and battery is totally dead in about 28-30hours, so no its not your bad connection!
I think 3G/UMTS just uses alot of power, and i have to say i have never used the UMTS for wat it is ment for, so i jus turn it off!!!
The only time it is used is when you need to download something.
check this out:
One of the main benefits of UMTS is its speed. Current rates of transfer for broadband information are 2 Mbits a second. This speed makes possible the kind of streaming video that can support movie downloads and video conferencing. In a sense, UMTS makes it possible for you to enjoy all of the functionality of your home computer while you are roaming. By combining wireless and satellite cellular technologies, UMTS takes advantage of all existing options to result in the Holy Grail of 3G presentation: seamless transitions between WiFi and satellite.

You say that the current rates of transfer are 2Mbits, but my understanding is that the Hermes chipset has a theoretical maximum of 1.8 with a typical 'good' speed of 1.2 to 1.5.
lol i feel like a noob, I had NO idea what UMTS was... and was scared i was roaming or somehing hahahah!
I pulled that specific info off the net....

EDGE speed...

What do you guys use the most to access internet/emails?
Wifi or edge?
Also, what practical speed do you get? Is there is too much difference in 3G and EDGE speed? Since I am from India and we don't have 3G (only in few cities and only 1 operator) I can't tell.
It would be helpful for me if people from europe, usa, au tell me what actual speed they get over edge/3G? Is it really the worth going to 3G from edge or is it the hype operators are creating?
I found atleast one article that clearly states the limitations of 3G

I use WIFI all the time, and sometimes GPRS as in México Exaclibur does not have 3G support
But I dont really miss it...
I read up on this a while ago and 3G has far supireor data download compared to EDGE and HSDPA is even faster, i use HSDPA on Tilt and it's fast.
The Dash does not support 3G or HSDPA so not really an issue
Speeds obviously depending on the technology.
GPRS Maximum 60.0 (kbit/s)
EDGE Maximum 236.8 (kbit/s) (theoretical maximum is 473.6 kbit/s)
3G Maximum 14.4 (Mbit/s)
HSDPA Maximum 21.1 (Mbit/s)
So you can see the difference capable these are the maximum speed so mainly will be stationary with them speeds not mobile but just wanted to give you comaparson.
GPRS Maximum 60.0 (kbit/s)
EDGE Maximum 236.8 (kbit/s) (theoretical maximum is 473.6 kbit/s)
3G Maximum 14.4 (Mbit/s)
HSDPA Maximum 21.1 (Mbit/s)
these are all in bits--just dividing by 8 gives the real picture. decrease it further go get practical speed.
i have tilt, but i think 3G and touchscreen drain battery like anything !! most people i have heard keep complaining about G1, tilt battery--far less compared to other cheap mobiles !!

Even with everything /8 it's a significan't difference between them all to which your original post was questioning "how i percieved it anyway"
Don't think battery drains like anything HSDPA always enabled 2700mAh get 2 days but then i'm always farting about tweaking it so never really see it drop
So Dash 4 days Tilt 2 days considering spec think it's pretty respectable i.m.o not to say it couldn't be alot better, i'm just satisfied
I would have to say that although i have not used a 3g device i think edge is very adequite for surfing the web through opera or skyfire. the speed is very pleasing for me. Also i would like to say that i have been coverted to opera mini from skyfire. cant believe it huh

My wife has a G1 and I have to say that, I compared the 3g TMO G1 to the dash using opera mini on edge, and I got to say that they were neck to neck, although they were some sites that have a lot of data , I only saw a slight decrease in the G1's speed vs the dash, only because the G1 is processing the data itself and the opera's servers compress the data making the dash feel just slightly faster. So when you think about it 3g is pretty fast. I wonder if they will ever have the HSDPA here in the US. if they do I'll probably be Sprint or ATT that will have it first.

Really they don't have HSDPA course they do it will just be network specific on reception, like in the UK. "oh and technology spec of phone"
I use 3G "carrier" to which is pap for HSDPA on laptop, then on phone i use o2 to which is HSDPA all day
Beat me down with a stick if no HSDPA in US JK

The're probably is HSDPA in US. Since I'm with TMO USA I be surprised if they have it, considering that they were the last mayor carrier to have 3g, maybe someone else does.
well ok back to edge over email and wi-fi, on my dash edge works the same as wi-fi for email no problamo there, but useing wi-fi to view video's on skyfire works great with edge just wait till 2am or 3am when every one is sleeping so edge data is wide open so you can view the video's over skyfire

Desire's Wifi Speed

Hey guys, my local phone stores are out of nexus ones, and being from the United States, T-mobile's 3g bands will not work if I were to get the Htc desire.
I was wondering, if I were to connect the desire over the home(wifi), would the internet speed be 3g quick?
I have a HTC touch hd and it seems to have like dial-up speed over wifi.
thanks in advance!
Hmm check your're setting wifi should be faster than 3G (assuming you have a good internetspeed). Dail-up is way too slow. I can download about 1,5 mb/s but that's also how fast my internet is (on wifi).
i get 13Mb/s down and 1.2Mb/s up over wifi, which is nearly the speed of my DSL line (20/1.5 iirc). Tested with speedtest app.
So yes, it's quite fast
(tested with froyo DeFrost 0.4 rom)

I've had WM handsets that had slower speeds over Wifi compared to 3G. Never did find out why, and likely wont, WM is done for me.
Just tested a few times over wifi, getting 5-7.5Mbps down / 900-1200Kbps up. My DSL is 12-15Mbps down and usually ~1500 up. My Girl friend is playing WoW but I expect the missing downstream speed is more to do with the crappy Wifi AP and that wifi is a pretty busy spectrum is this building.
Over HSPA I'm seeing 1800-1900Kbps down, 800-900Kbps up.
alright! cool. appreciiate the speed tests guys.
mayne, the desire is blisteringly fast, in fact its wifi signal is faster/stronger than my PC's wifi N pci card

HSUPA in android.

I was wondering if it is possible to enable HSUPA in android.
After doing some more Googling, it seems you just mean HSPA in general... as in 3g? Yes, it should work just fine. Are you only getting 2g/EDGE...? If so, you'll see an E next to the network signal. If you get 3g, you'll see a 3g icon...
Hey,
i think he means HSDPA and is the abbreviation of "High Speed Downlink Packet Access". It is a connection faster than 3G. Within Windows Mobile i got H and in Android 3G. A Friend just got the Desire Z and here appears the H for HSDPA in the upper right Corner of the Screen. I'm from Germany so i don't even know if this connection is worldwide available?!
HSDPA for your Information is a connection than can run 14,6 Mb/s. I've only found Sites in German, i guess this is not helpful?! .
Are you talking about HSPA+...? I don't think our phones support that.
@arrrghhh: I Think our Rhodium100_de should support HSPA+ if it is what we are talking about. In Windows Mobile there are 4 different modes G -> E -> 3G -> H. So there is GPRS -> EDGE -> 3G -> HSDPA. HSDPA is wide ranged in Germany and in bigger cities normal connection. So can there be a difference between our Rhodiums, that ours support HSDPA and the sold Versions in other countries not? Or is it just an illusion that german providers make to receive more users???
Hm... HSPA is like 3.5g... if the companies wanted to brand it a name. I misspoke earlier when I said 3g was HSPA. HSPA+ is being branded "4g" but it isn't truly 4g...
With that said, evidently WiMax isn't 4g, so no carrier that is advertising their service as 4g is truly running "4g"... stupid ITU-R. I'm pretty sure the phone CAN do HSPA, but CANNOT do HSPA+...
Also after reading it would make sense, HSPA is faster than standard "3g", so that would stand to reason.
I guess you would be a good one to ask Bieka, does Android support your HSPA connection? The phone's don't support HSPA+.
Hey arrrghhh,
yes it supports HSPA and no it don't . I think that the shown connection speed in WinMob is a little bit confusing. Running Android i get "only" 3G but this is just the phone was made for. I explored many sites with facts to the phone and everywhere the same! Supported 3G -as you said too- but no HSPA+ what is called HSDPA by the Providers in Germany and is acually 3.5G. So no need to "implent" HSPA+ cause there is no phone support at all . I think that WinMob isn't able to display the right connection speed.
I also tested my connection shown up as 3G with the speettest.net app and i get a speed of 1.94 Mbps download. It's actually not the limit of 3G but it's ok to view most sites and view youtube stuff. I just wanted to test a difference between android and WinMob but i didn't found any apps like the one in android and speedtest.net (and others) are using flash on their sites so the browser can't display that. So i couldn't check if the shown H in the upper right of WinMob is "real" or just 3G?! If there where a difference between the WinMob Speed i could say it exactly. So is there an app you know about?

I was wondering this exact same thing the other day. I found this but havn't tested it. If i get a chance later I will as I get the H in winmob in the office here
OK I ran it twice with H showing in win and got a max of 7.37 Mbps and average 6.4Mbps

[Q] HSPA+?

Three UK have just rolled out HSPA+ and I read that the Desire HD supports this (According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snapdragon_(processor) under MSM8255 in the chart)
Google-ing HTC Desire HD HSPA+ brings up loads of announcements that the phone has HSPA+ as well.
So the Chipset supports HSPA+?, but is it enabled in the Radio?
Mine works just fantastic with HSPDA, blazing fast net!
Yes the DHD supports HSPA+. But don't forget that HSPA+ isn't the same as LTE or WIMAX. Here in austria i get about 3-5mbit down and 1-2mbit up with hspa+(or hsdpa? Idk exactly, but i'm also on three) depending on day and time
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
People, please do not confuse HSPA+ with HSDPA. HSPA+ is a new faster form of HSDPA which the Desire HD apparently supports (According to Wikipedia and Qualcomm)
It does indeed support HSPA+, we have those networks here in Finland. My record speed is 10.1 down and 1.62 up
Yes Desire HD supports HSPA+. Really no big deal though, the difference is HSPA+ supports up to 14.4Mbps download whereas normal HSDPA supports 7.2Mbps download. I've never hit above 5Mbps download. Still nice to know though.
I'm not sure that the Desire HD supports HSPA+. The following has happened recently.
A month ago I was getting 6Mbps 24/7 on my DHD
Now I'm barly getting 2Mbps most of the time. (This started about 3-5 days after 2.3.3 Update BTW!)
Now I've managed to borrow a nice HSPA+ Dongle (HUAWEI E353) and it gives me 9.8Mbps (1.3Megabyte/second!!!!!!)
In my testing both devices where in the same physical location (Not at the same time obviously! And yes both on Three)
I am not happy at all. My Desire HD was giving me 800KB/s and now I can't even get 250KB/s. Yet at the same time I know its not the network as the dongle performs so fast that I can't even believe its wireless broadband!
Well, according to Telus, the Desire HD runs on their "4G" network, which is HSPA+.
hi
even i am facing slow internet speeds in comparison with nokia e series and iphone.am on custom rom by mike
try the patch and c if there is any noticeable diff....
