[Q] Really need help! Would be much appretiated! - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just rooted my Desire and all went well. Then I installed ROM manager and decided to backup my current rom to see how it works.
When i selected backup rom it took me to a screen with an exclamation mark on it, i pressed the power button went down and did the backup.
However when my phone reboots it shows the htc logo on bootup and gets stuck in some kind of loop and just displays the boot logo over and over.
This is my first attempt at anything like this and i am quite worried.
Any help would be greatly appretiated!

Firstly, I take it you didn't make sure a stock ROM was available for you should anything go wrong?
Secondly, turn the phone off, turn it on again whilst holding volume down to get to HBOOT and then select clear data. This will wipe everything and should allow the phone to reload...

I have the official RUU file that my phone was running: RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.10.405.2_R_Radio_32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_142828_signed, which i downloaded for shipped-roms.
Would that make any difference?
Thank you for the reply.

Someone who actually did the right thing for once!!! WOO HOO!!
You can use that to go back to stock so you can start again, and at least you'd have a working phone

Thank you sooo much!
Ok sorry if this sounds silly, but i really dont want to make another mistake.
So i just run the ruu file on my pc connect my phone and let it do its thing?
Or are there any specifics i should be aware of?

Im not sure what went wrong but i am still not managing.
I tried going into the bootloader and clearing the storage but the device is still stuck in that loop when it trys to boot.
I have the official ruu file on my pc but im not quite sure how to use that to restore my phone.
Could someone please maybe help with that? Or is there any other way i could resolve this issue?

Before you start you need HTC Sync installed on your PC. Once done:
1. Start the RUU
2. Connect your Desire
3. Select 'HTC Sync' from the options on the phone
4. The RUU should recognise the phone and allow you to continue
5. Follow the instructions

Thank you that you are taking the time to help me, it really means alot.
At the moment i can only access the HBOOT on the phone, the phone is still not able to boot, still get caught in that loop?

Ok i got the phone to start up, thanx for all the help!

Stuck in a bootloop? Remove the battery. Go into the recovery, perform a full-wipe and flash again. If that not helps then boot youre phone again in the recovery and .....then:
Format youre sdcard from the recovery into swap=0, ext=512, remainder=fat32. You will loose all there is on youre sdcard.
Then after formatting. Turn off the phone. Take out the sdcard and copy the rom to youre sdcard. Put it back in the phone. Start youre phone in the recovery and flash the rom.
Thanks for the quick reply.!
The problem is i am unable to login to my phone. So how will i be able to flash the phone? only if i log in can i use rom manager isnt it? I am a total newbie at this. I would really appreciate it if you could explain this in detail to me!
thanks!
as I know power button with volume down together then wait then use volume down
to highlight recovery then power to enter.
It is explained in the first post of thus forum.
Hold down the back key while pushing the power button.
You will get a menu
Select Bootloader (by pressing power button)
Then wait for 10 seconds on the next menu
Scrol to Recovery with the volume-down button
Then you'll wait ten seconds and get a black screen with red traingle
now connect your phone to the pc with usb
start a adb recovery on the pc (for this you must have a recovery on the pc installed as well as Android SDK) in my case I just run the file recovery-windows.bat
Then you'll get a menu on your phone wit a lot of options, you can even select Ms-usb toggle after wich you can acces your sd card.
I am not a developer but think this is quite it. Download links are all in teh first thread of this forum.
Could you tell me if this would work?
I'll first wipe the phone, including the cache.
Then I'll copy paste the zip file of the Nextsense rom onto an sd card from my PC, insert into my phone, go to recovery mode, go to the sdcard-update.zip menu, and select the nextsense zip file.
Will that work?
Please help me out. and cheers to all u guys who took the trouble to reply so quickly. thanks..
I finally got it to work. All i did was I went into the recovery console, selected factory reset. and it got alright. Only problem is that i think my sd card got busted in the process. No idea what happened to it. It is not even getting detected by my laptop. I guess i ll have to get a new one. Thanks a ton to all the xda guys for helping me out. this forum is really kickass! I shall definitely return to xda to get help on further issues!
reformat your SD card , that should fix it !
Thanks! yeah, formatting the sdcard fixed it. Finally working properly now..
HTC desire stuck in bootscreen
I have the same problem with my desire. While loading a ROM with ROM manager the phone rebooted and started to install the ROM. But while it was installing it i error message came up and the phone froze. And after that it get stuck at the bootscreen. I've read the posts written earlier about this problem, but nothing works.
When I push volume down + power on the phone should think for a second and then show green texts about the SD card etc, but when this message shows it says it can't find anything on the SD card. And when I enter fastboot -> bootloader, it just throws me back to the home menu.. any ideas what to do?
you have to use recovery option in the bootloader
Unless you pushed the NewSense ROM via ADB you're most likely going to get a bootloop. After reading statements in the flashable versions of that ROM, that's what I've gathered: Bootloops.
Either wipe everything and install another ROM or install it the 'old school' way, using ADB.

Similar problem
Hey.
I tried to s-off my phone using alpharev and I had the "waiting for flashing to complete". I tried to check if the proces was running with some commands and it seem as if I managed to restart the proces. I finally gave up and removed the phone. Probably too early because now I can only get bootscreen and Clockwordmod recovery. I'm unable to get further than that and therefore I'm not able to start the s-off proces again.
Can anybody help me?

[Q] stuck on htc screen after using rom manager

Help! I just rooted my new Desire with the unrevoked method. Then I installed Rom Manager, saved its recovery mode and backed up my ROM. Everything seemed to go well enough, but now my Desire is stuck endlessly rebooting to the HTC Screen.
I can access the Clockmod Recovery screen however. I've tried the system reboot option but that just gets me the Htc screen rebooting again and again.
I'm pretty much a newbie to this and didn't want to choose another option (wipe data/factory reset, restore saved rom) without checking it out as I don't want to brick my new Desire.
Could someone give me a step by step plan for recovering my Desire?
Many thanks,
Joe
Nice thing you have a nandroid backup. Just restore the backup. it should work.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
You have to wipe all the data and just flash a new Rom.

stuck on htc screen after using rom manager
Thanks for this. A couple of other newbie questions. As I understand it, I wipe the data using the Recovery option, and I found the how to flash a rom instructions. If I want a stock rom (like the one that came with the Orange Desire here in the UK) where would I get that? And do you think it might work if I restored the first backup I made, or do you think that's faulty...
Thanks again,
Joe
stuck on htc screen after using rom manager
Things went from bad to worse. My battery seemed to stop charging so I wasn't able to get back to the recovery screen, and when I plugged the desire into the computer via the usb cable I simply got a flickering htc screen. I've had to send it back to Orange.
This experience has certainly made me leary of rooting and using rom manager again!
Does anybody have any explanation of what went wrong?
Joe
When the phone gets stuck in that loop when its trying to boot it wont charge, im not sure why.
The same thing happend to me using Rom manager. (maybe its a bug with the new version, or maybe we just didnt use it right)
I managed to get my phone to charge by taking out the battery and putting it back in ... so the phone was off, put it into the charger until it was fully charged and then did the recovery.
Battery affected by rom manager?
There's an addendum to this story. I replaced my Desire but had the same problem again, which seemed to be down to the battery in the end. Is it possible that the (virtually new) battery was affected by either rooting or rom manager backing up the rom? It seems very weird!
Joe
This might work for you
Remember to power down your Desire totally and charge it for about 2 hours or so (just to be safe) and continue.
WAIT, BEFORE YOU START, CREATE A GOLDCARD. IT IS VERY NECESSARY. THINGS WILL GO WRONG IF YOU DONT.
EDIT: YOU MUST BE ABLE TO BOOT GO TO THE BOOTLOADER MENU.
Firstly, download this file. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13240777/Desire Downgrade.ZIP
Extract the files.
Run the win-down.bat file.
Follow on screen instructions.
After the process is completed, Head to the root of your SD card and check if there is a file named P99***IMG (FORGOT THE EXACT NAME BUT IT SHOULD BE SOMETHING LIKE THIS) there should be one.
Secondly, disconnect your phone and turn it off.
After that boot up your phone while pressing the volume down button and the power button.
The bootloader should be checking for files after awhile and once it found the file that is supposed to be in the root of your sd card, press the volume up button (NOT EXACTLY SURE, SHOULD BE THE ONE THAT SAYS YES AND CONTINUE)
It should be writing files to your phone. and replaces everything. E.G: HBOOT, RECOVERY,RADIO and such.
It should be writing files successfully and then it would ask you to reboot. Continue with the reboot and you should be having your Desire back to stock. Perfect.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THERE ARE RISKS INVOLVED LIKE FAILURE OF WRITING TO THE HBOOT. PLEASE REMEMBER TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. MAINLY, DO NOT BLAME ME FOR ANYTHING THAT GOES WRONG.
FINALLY, YOU SHOULD BE READING EVERYTHING UP TO HERE AND THAT YOU MUST HAVE A GOLDCARD (A GOLD SD CARD)
Hope this helps you and please ask if you have further questions. PM me if the questions cannot be answered here. Good Luck
Ta
Thanks for the long reply. Sadly, I'm unable to test it out as I had to return my phone to Orange. I'm still rather mystified by what happened in the end (how could rooting affect a battery?) but I'll keep your reply on hand in case it happens next time I root.

[Q] Bricked my DHD, please help :(

Let me just start off by saying poop.
I've been reading up on these forums quite a lot, equipping myself with enough knowledge to get going on using this phone to its potential.
After the anticipation of getting my DHD, I went about rooting it. I used this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841076.
Everything went fine without much trouble. I completed all the steps in rooting it and gaing SU access. Also installed the Clockwork Recovery mod without a hiccup. I went on to install the Android Revolution ROM and going through the guide I used a tool called: 'Easy Wipe Upgrade.'
After installing this zip, the phone reboot and it just refuses to budge. Stuck on the HTC splash screen.
I've held down the bottom volume button with power and it gets me into HBOOT. I've tried a variety of option such as factory resets and nothing seems to be working.
My luck and phones. Just have a very expensive brick now sitting on my desk. Ah
I'd appreciate any help I can get please. Thanks.
I managed to resolve it!
Just FYI. Mounted the USB (Which was hidden fairly deeply) I guess you don't look when you panic? I then dropped on the ROM and installed it and boot up took a while but voila, it worked!
Well done, I would go mental if I bricked my phone. That's why I am still just reading up rather than trying things.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
in the exact same situation as you where Could you go into abit more detail how you resolved this? currently have no phone cheers
whats wrong with your phone mate
Just so you know, as long as you have access to the bootloader (can be stock bootloader with S-ON, doesn't matter), 99% of the time you can 'unbrick' your phone by installing a stock RUU (PD98IMG.zip method) which returns your phone to complete stock.
If you install the wrong RUU while ENG HBOOT S-OFF then you can potentially fudge up your phone for good (unless you have Radio S-OFF, then you are fine - just install the correct RUU).
So don't worry, because there is nearly always a way to go back to how your phone was before you started hacking it.

You are not supposed to rename the RUU file, rather you run the RUU file and then afterwards locate the ROM.zip file located in your temp folder. This ROM.zip file is meant to be renamed PD98IMG.zip, NOT the RUU file.
ok that was stupid of me.. ok will try to give it a go..
sorry if this sounds stupid to you again.. but, i just wana be sure.. its my first smartphone..
anyway, i run the ruu file on my pc, yeah? so then when i run it, it asks me to connect my dhd using the usb cable.. so i did... but it couldnt detect my phone.. thus, it couldnt continue it's setup.. ;-( thank you for helping out..
Make sure you install HTC Sync, it should also install all the DHD USB drivers needed.
hey, do you have any step by step guide on doing this? im afraid il do something wrong again and just risk messing up the phone even more..
i have htc sync and the htc drivers on my laptop but when i connect the usb plug to my phone and try to run the ruu.. it still gives me the prompt of no connection from the pc and android phone.. :-| what am i doing wrong? sorry...
thanks in advance for the any help!
i managed to get to the update part.. but now it prompts a 131 error message.. :-( help?

Desire HD stuck on welcome screen after 2.3 update

Hello everyone,
im in urge need of help. I somehow failed while updating to 2.3 :/
I thought that the update was done since the loading bar went to the right and stood there for a good couple of minutes. So i took the battery out. Now as i turn the phone on i only get to see the htc sign on a white background.
I tried holding the volume down key and the power button at once. I get into the recovery menu or whatever it is called. There i've chosen factory reset: i can see a update screen again. The bar doesnt move from left to right though. After 15 sec the phone resets itself and i can see the htc logo again
Recovery only shows me a phone image with a exclamation mark
I never installed anything custom on the phone. It is as i bought it from the shop. I initially had 2.2 on it.
Anyone help please
I will guess you need to put a ROM file on your SD card and select install file from sd card in recovery. If something went wrong during update you proberly dont have a Android system installed right now.
But if your on stock rom I'm not sure if that will be possibl, but hopefully somebody with more knowledge could answear that...
Good luck
If you pulled the battery while it was updating something like the radio, then you have messed it up.
I'd suggest downloading the Gingerbread RUU and trying it again. Sadly you may now lose all the data on you phone.

screw the data !
I just want my phone back
If anyone could hit me up with the details how Im supposed to bring back my desire hd to live id be forever grateful!!!
Click the link in my sig, head to RUUs and download the Gingerbread RUU. Once downloaded, plug you handset into your computer, run the RUU~.exe .
If that fails to work, with the RUU~.exe still running open a search window on your computer and search for "rom.zip", I will be in a hidden temp folder somewhere in your userdata.
Rename this rom.zip to "PD98IMG.zip" and copy to your SDcard. Now turn off your phone, and power on while holding volume down. The bootloader should see the PD98IMG.zip and flash it for you.

dont think that this is possible, as he never had a custom revovery à la ClockworkMod installed. So he cant choose which zip to flash.
but i think that andyharney got the solution for this

Thanks a lot! It works. I had my doubts as during the whole instalation my phone showed the htc logo on the white background several times(i thought that it got worse), but in the end i got it back runing!
So happy! Thanks 1.000.000 times and once again: THANKS!
Which method worked the RUU~.exe or the PD98IMG.zip?

Flashed System Partition with Boot Image - Help I'm Stupid

I would be so greatful if someone could help me, I think I have really messed up.
Coles Notes: I flashed the 4.0.4 image to my System partition which I am pretty sure should have gone to the boot partition now... Holy **** I'm dumb.
Anyways now my phone is just stuck saying Google. Anyone who can point me in the right direction of even a System image I can flash over top I would be so greatful.
Ok. I'm a dumb newbie, but what happens if you pull the battery, put it back in, then hold down the Up/Down buttons and turn the phone on?

Not a dumb newbie, checking if bootloader still works is a good idea
@OP: If you can get in the bootloader, your best bet would be unlocking, installing CWM and then flash a ROM through it.
You can also flash the stock ROM via the GNex toolkit.
Just read the guides and information here in the forums, it seems confusing at first but is really simple once you get used to it.
Good luck!
Thank-you for your quick response. I have CWM installed and can get into the bootloader. the problem now seems to be I cant get the device to show up in windows I always get <waiting for device> when going to flash it. Any ideas? I have been searching the forums trying to find an answer but nothing so far seems to have worked.
Another dumb newbie thing, but when you plug the phone in to the USB port on your computer, does your computer show the phone as having connected (ala the ADB driver in your Device Manager in Windows)?
If not, double check to make sure your ADB drivers are installed. I doubt they aren't, seeing as how you were flashing stuff earlier (from your computer, right?), but it's a wild guess anyway.
Thanks to everyone for the advise. Yes I could see the drivers and they were working perfectly according to device manager. However I guess it was stuck outside of debug mode?
Anyways from the boot menu the program was able to detect it, flash 4.0.4 to the phone, and then I was able to install the canadian radio without issue (hence the reason why I did this in the first place, we are stuck on yakjuux with 4.0.1).
Thanks again to everyone, great learning experience.
Sure thing!
Glad it worked
As a future reference, the "Boot Menu" is actually where you need to be for flashing via PC. The commands won't come through if you're in recovery.
Make sure to make an Android right now!
You enter CWM Recovery, go to backup and restore and then hit backup.
In case your phone ever messes up while you're not close to a computer, you can just boot into CWM and hit "restore", it's as easy as that.
I always have 2 recoveries on my phone just in case.
