How can I shut off Verizon's updates? CLOSED (Over in general now) - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I AM NOT RESPONDING TO THIS THREAD ANYMORE. IT'S OVER IN GENERAL NOW UNDER "HOW TO STOP VERIZON'S FUTURE OTA UPDATES"
I have an Incredible fully flashed to Cricket phone service and for some reason I still get Verizon's OTA updates. I don't want them updates coming to my phone and nagging me. Anyone know how to turn that off so I don't get any future updates?
Solved! Answer below.
To turn OFF future OTA updates, there is a file in the /system/etc/security folder. The file is named "otacerts.zip". Rename it "otacerts.zip.bak", or whatever you want. That will prevent future updates.
You can change that filename using ADB, the root explorer app, or a terminal emulator app of choice right on your DROID. I use root explorer because it is easy and fast. But that's just me...

Yeah I found that and used it with success but I think that just turns off the notification and makes your phone think that it's been updated. I'm looking for something that disables it completely so that I won't ever get the updates anymore. Thanks

Found the answer
Found the answer on CDMA GURUS! I'll paste it below.

This is thread is not about fixing the update you already have but have not installed, it's about not getting any future updates. If you already have already received the update but you have not ran the update then you need to do something different.
Here is your solution...
Open root explorer and go to system/build.prop, if you press-hold the build.prop in Root Explorer you can "Open in Text Editor". The only thing that needs changed is the six digit number: "FRF91/XXXXXX:user..." replace that six digit number with 264707, save and exit, reboot. My notification was still up after I rebooted, however after tapping on it and hitting back, I got it to go away.

This method did not work for me at all . The edits took as I checked to make sure, however, the update still appears atleast 20 times a day .

I did the system/build.prop hack and it worked just fine.
I am not the person that posted that and I have no idea why it didn't work for you cause it works for everyone else. Sorry

for some reason when I go to update this file it comes back as the file is read only? I know I'm rooted because I can enable the wireless tethering. I have the vzn droid x, version 2.3.340 android 2.2.1

Newbie Questions about EVO Rooting

I'm coming from a rooted port of Android for the Sprint Touch (Vogue) (Thanks DZO, Myn, and company!!!) and WOW EVO is amazing.
Anyways I have a few questions I need help with getting started I've been reading a lot but I'm still overwhelmed with the wealth of info:
#1. I updated the OTA - does this mean I can't root yet until the new OTA is rooted?
#2. I would like to go to a new rom without all the junk. I don't use sense, or any of that other fancy stuff running in the background. Is there a rom you would recommend?
#3. In the past, I had a rooted device where I could modify the androidinstall.tar and remove .apk's I didn't want. Is this possible with the current situation on EVO?
#4. With all these roms, do you generally clean wipe everything each time? or do settings / apps / configs remain?
Thanks!!!
I can try to answer your questions.
1. Unless something has come out recently off you are stock and did the update no way to root yet.
2. I just use stock ROM and remove what I don't use.
3. I personally use "root explorer" once you are root you can either unlock nand and use out to remove bloatware or you can adb and remove with your computer.
4. I'm not to sure about those commands, I haven't ever used those.
Look at the sticky in any forum and go to the ROM and Guide link and everything you need to know its there. Keep a close lookout I'm sure somebody will figure out how to root the update soon.

Yeah I love root explorer, that's how I used to change things on my old phone. I have it installed but I guess I just have to wait for them to root the update. Maybe I shouldn't have updated
Oh well, knowing XDA they will probably root it by the time I'm finished typing this post. I'll keep reading those stickies... thanks for the answer though!
No problem. Yeah, never install an update till the devs ok it. Good luck.

Crap one question I forgot - without being rooted - is there anyway I can do the wireless tethering besides the standard Sprint program?
There is a program on the market called easytether. One is the lite version, which is free. The full version is 10 bucks

go into recovery and see if it says S-ON or S-OFF at the top. If it says S-ON then your not fully rooted, and you need to find what software version you have and find the appropriate rooting instruction thread. Thats one thing that can definately be holding you up

Personally I would just redo all the steps to root your phone. If your having an issue removing an apk then the rooting of the phone somehow along the way went wonkers. If you can open a terminal app type "su" and superuser.apk asks to accept it and you have S-OFF. Something is a muck and I would re-root the thing. if you have 2.02/2.10 then unrevoked won't work for you.

Dude I got the whole thing taken care of in like 5 minutes no joke. I checked the HBoot and it said S-On so I googled how to turn it off in the evo. Google took me back to the unrevoked website and I read up on the unrevoked forever page and it literally answered all of my questions and solved them with a simple zip flash. I checked the HBoot just now and it said S-Off. I just tried to change the name of the Htclockscreen apk file to a bak file and see if it changes back. Still a bak file after the hot restart and I got the Aops lockscreen now.
I gotta hand it to not just the Unrevoked team but the entire android community as well. These guys are the best ive seen when it comes to supporting the end user and making sure that everyone has a good time. Their the best community ive ever come across online.

Updating Hosts file

Complete android newie, please be gentle - had my Desire less than a week.
Been trying to update my hosts file with a custom one.
Tried using some info I found on this site and couldn't get it to work.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=680579
Root Explorer also fails. Reports not enough space.
Device is rooted, running Oxygen custom rom.
Just wondering if updating it from an update.zip would work?
I am assuming the rooting worked fine - I was able to access the /system/etc folder and take a backup of my old hosts file, just doesn't want to play ball the other way around. Yes I did change from R/O to R/W.
Anyone got any other ideas - I see there are several posts saying they can't update theirs on the desire.
I take it you're rooted? Just get AdFree off the Market and use that, works fine

I've had about 4 updates to my version since getting it, just search 'adfree' on the Market
Yes it's rooted.
Tried adfree but I read that the hosts file was very outdated and that a member on here has updated it. I have the updated hosts file, just can't replace the one on the device.

Were you able to downgrade back to E97310f ? Yup, worked for me
Did that downgrade make your phone rootable? Yup, root worked
What root method are you using? Google LG Optimus G root, and look for the page on android central for the spring lgog
Ok ... so I'm going to follow the rules of XDA ....
Don't post a new thread ~ even if this is different from my model and predicament as it seems to me - a newb.
Search for threads on Q&A, read thoroughly through threads to see if you can find what you're looking for.
Goal: I'd like to root my Telus LG Optimus G, so that I can run "CM10.1" or "JPO40D] Google AOSP Optimus G LGE-973"
Fustration: It would seem, to us newbs at least, that the more experienced veteran members that we're an annoyance asking for steps by steps; thus only getting very generic (an example ... How do I get a citizenship in the USA, get a green card) answers. I'm not here to piss anyone off ... I'm just trying to get some help to make my first android experience worthwhile. Everyone had to learn from somewhere, someone else - yet too many on these threads have forgotten that .... the ESSENCE of a community!
This is what I've done thus far ....

^ apparently I need to ROOT my Telus E973.
This tool in his thread is SUPPOSED to do it. "Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v18"

^ this doesn't frak'n work so what am I supposed to really do???
notes:
Downloaded the "LGE973AT-00-V10e-TLS-CA-OCT-24-2012 0[TELUS CANADA]"
Does anyone have a step by step guide to get to the hidden RECOVERY menu (Power + UP & DOWN buttons from full power off state)!
Yes I've seen that youtube video posted by one of the android modders here - doesn't work. Arrgh!
I feel like throughing this G to the wall and just going back to my iPhone 5 until BB10 is available not ideal really.
Bell E97310F KDZ
I brought my phone in for repairs and it was updated in the process. I want to root again, but can't seem to find a KDZ to downgrade. All of the links that I find are dead. Any ideas?
N/M There was a link in the general section that explained that the address had been updated. If anyone else is looking for it, this worked for me

Sasktel and Bell are pretty much the same thing.....if your on software version of 10h and on Sasktel, revert back to 10f using the Bell .kdz file, then root. You can update via OTA after your rooted and will retain it.

Not sure why everyone is recommending downgrading to root when there is a perfectly usable method for the latest firmware.
Just create a file named g_security on your internal sd card, turn on adb debugging, get an adb shell, and you'll be root. Download su, copy it to /system/xbin, setuid it and you're rooted. You can then get superuser or supersu from play to seal the deal.
I didn't find this method, just passing along what appears to be overlooked information.

he's a freaking genius, i've been using that method to root. xxbeanxx should really start a new thread and spread this
1. just create the "g_security" at the root of your internal memory then turn on adb debug (if its already on, turn off and back on)
2. when you adb in you'll have root.
3. push su to /system/xbin
4. in adb, chmod 4755 /system/xbin
5. ???
6. profit!

Main differences in my script is that you don't need to ever disconnect your phone.
1. Unzip the zip file
2. Make sure USB Debugging is on, and your are in Charge only Mode
3. Run the CurrentRoot.bat, wait for the prompt
4. Change to MTP mode.
5. Wait for your computer to ask how to view files.
6. Press enter in the CMD prompt to continue.
7. Done.
This is a fully working method for the most current US/Canadian releases, and Jelly Bean releases. BTW, the current release does not install busybox correctly, includes SuperuserPro.apk (which I'm sure wasn't purchased by everyone downloading this). Also I have updated it to the latest busybox, su binary's, and Superuser.apk available.

Unrooting S20 Plus

Hi all
Hope this is the correct area...
My hubby bought me a S20 plus for my birthday through a local dealer.
I noticed a few issues like not being able to use biometrics or install certain apps.
I've since found out the phone has been rooted.
I've tried to do a factory reset, but this hasn't helped.
I've downloaded root checker and it confirms the phone is rooted. I've downloaded SuperSU yet is won't work as ver 2.82 claims it's for an older Version of Android.
I've downloaded solid explorer to delete the root access files such as Busybox and SU however I cannot find these files in the system folder or the system/bin folder.
Can anyone advise on how I can unroot my phone? I am unable to install certain needed apps due to this.
Phone details below. Sorry am unable to upload pics.
UI Version = 1
Android Version = 10
Let me know if other info is needed.
I've even tried calling the Samsung Center and they are unable to assist...
Thanks all

You will need to get hold of the stock firmware from somewhere like Sammobile and flash back to stock using ODIN. There's tons of guides knocking about on here for the step by step. The damage is done though as far as any Knox related features go, it's like a fuse that blows when you root and you can never fix that.
Having said that, biometrics should have never been affected by rooting so that's a bit unusual. Flash stock and set up from scratch then go from there, could be faulty also
Thanks for the guidance Dave. I'll search the forums for the steps.
For clarity, when I say biometrics didn't work, it works allow me to record etc, but when I tried to enable it, like on my banking app, it wouldn't allow me. This is how I eventually figured out my phone was rooted. While I know the benefits of being rooted, a normal everyday user like myself, certainly won't benefit from it.
I've had a Samsung my entire life, and always saw the secured by knox logo... When you say damage has been done, does this mean that all my security in the device, such as my banking details etc, may be compromised?
Jees. I hope not. As this would really freak me out...
Ok so Finding the firmware wasn't to difficult. Sanmobile quite easy to navigate.
Just a query please... My phone base band version lists g985fxxu1atb2 however the closest I could find to this is G985FXXU1ATBM
Is this ok or does it have to be the exact same description?
Shoo. Lol. Really hope I'm going to be able to get this right **insert nervous smile emoticon here**

The last letters are the region/operator of the Rom. Not necessarily has to be the exact description, the really important are the first that indicate model number.
Ok. So have downloaded Odin and am busy downloading the flash firmware.
May I please be so bold as to ask someone on here to please share a link tot he step by step guide that I will need to follow in order to flash my phone back to the original boot thingie :silly::silly::silly:
I have tried to search but seem to only come up with a nexus thread with no mention of Odin.
~Sorry to ask, but little overwhelmed LOL and want to make sure I do this properly and not screw up my phone.
REAL noob here, so apologies if I come across lazy and getting others to do the work, but am really grateful for the help.
Maybe I'm searching incorrectly???
I found this somehow....
Is this it?

**fingers crossed**
Can you unlock your phone with biometrics? Im guessing only the banking apps don't work because it's rooted. If i remember correctly most banking apps and maybe Google pay(not sure about that) stop working after rooting because the phone is "compromised" and it's not safe. You have to hide your root status from these apps and they will work properly then. Maybe someone else can help you with that because i do not remember how to do it.
Hi Marto
Yes, biometrics does work, although not really good. But that's probably due to the hectic screen protector.
Correctly so, it's mostly the banking / payment apps that won't work, and I can't check or download any software updates... Although I belive this can also be done manually....
But wow, there's an app that hides the root status? That might be a whole lot easier than re flashing. Truthfully I'm Sh!tting myself at the thought of attempting this ????

if the phone was bought as new, go back to the dealer and demand a new one that is not rooted.
could also be that your husband rooted the phone and installed software that keep tabs on what you do.
