Wallpaper Information Needed - Touch HD Themes and Apps

I'd like to have a go at making some wallpapers to share with everyone for the Touch HD. Before I do could you advise me of the following:
- What file type are wallpapers;
- What pixel size should the wallpaper be;
- What dpi is required for a high quality image for dsiplaying on the phone.
Many thanks

Never mind guys. I ended up making a few wallpapers with the following spec (I hope that is correct):
- file type: .png
- size: 480x800 pixels
- dpi: 200

Thank you for confirming that.
Yes, I'll use photoshop. I'm still learning photoshop but I'll give it a go anyway.
I have now made a few, here; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846092
I have a few more ideas so will make them as I get time....

Is it possible to have a clear home screen without a clock or any icons so the wallpaper can be seen?

I think in the home >settings>today you can switch things on and off. To be honest though you can see quite alot. You can minimise the clock which shows more.
Have a go at installing some of my wallpapers and see how they come out (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846092). It only takes a few seconds and you can revert back to OEM easily.

Testing new wallpapers

Hi guys
I have been playing with my pc and my G1,I am trying out some wallpapers, resolutions and little by little I like what I am getting.....this is not amazing and I am sure some of you have done something similar....but I thought it would be nice if I share it with you,so that we can share our ideas and thoughts. The resolution is 480x320,I will change the resolution and try others out.
Put the wallpapers on the same folder as your pictures once you've done that you can start using the new wallpapers.
You can download them from the link:
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?enwnnkjiqmi
Here are you have some more.

Thanks for sharing those screenshots.
by the way how did you get the screenshots?
you can do it like here http://www.downloadsquad.com/2008/10/22/taking-screenshots-on-an-android-based-phone/#comments or
if all you won’t to do is screen shots all you need to do is enable usb debugging on the G1 buy going to Settings, then Applications, and then Development. Check the checkbox for “USB debugging.install the sdk and install the windows drivers from here http://www.anddev.org/debugging-installing_apps_on_the_g1_windows_driver-t3236.html this is all i did and it works for me on vista did not install eclipse or jdk just go to the tools folder in the android sdk main folder
Ok...I got it..took me a while but finally I can post some screenshots.
Once again thank you so much.

Wallpaper problem
I created this wallpaper...... When going into photo viewer, it looks fantastic. Can zoom in without any dithering.
However, the moment I apply as my wallpaper, it looks like poop.
Have tried as a JPG and PNG
Awesome wallpaper... but question do you have root? maybe you can replace the originals.

I do have root and will try that. Anyone wanna put this on their phone and see if it's just me?
When you select it as the wallpaper, do you expand the box to cover the whole pic? So far, every pic I've resized to 640x480 and thrown on have been absolutely flawless. I'm using paint.net to resize and convert them to jpg, if that makes a difference.

Yes I have.... Can you try and use it yourself and see what it looks like on your device?
When I use a 640x480 image and try and set it as a wallpaper it always asks me to crop it. Does it then strech the cropped image?
Im really confused about the wallpapers atm.
Btw, I know tmobile (in the UK) reduces image quality if you browse a image on the web via there data connection (eg save picture as, in the browser) but over wifi you loose no image quality.

Adding wallpapers to system default options
I wanted to add some wallpapers to the SD card but have them pop up under the phone wallpaper options instead of under photos. Is there a place on the SD card I can put them so they are grouped with the default ones? I have a lot of pics so it takes a long time to scroll through them to find my wallpapers so I am hoping I can make it a bit more organized.
The defaults reside in /system/app/Launcher.apk/res/drawable/
Can I add wallpaper and apps to an update.zip?
I have created a custom theme and I am wondering if I can just throw more .apk programs into the app folder to install additional programs?
Also, I am trying to add my own wallpaper to launcher.apk with the 2 file sizes and proper naming but they arent coming up, is there something else I need to edit to have them showup as "default" wallpaper?

WM6.5 and Background wallpaper question.

Hey
wanted to know if the WM6.5 allows you to use full res and quality wallpaper?
not like on the regular HD wallpaper that shows only 512X512...
tnx =]
WM 6.5 allows you to use full screen images and they are crystal clear.

It's not WinMo that's causing the problem with Touch HD background wallpapers, it's Touch Flo 3D.
So, if you would disable TF3D you could probably get nice quality with WinMo 6.1.
I have been digging around this issue and I do have a solution to get full resolution wallpapers with TF3D. Unfortunately, this process now requires a lot of messing around with Manila files, so it might not be for everyone. But I'm thinking about publishing my custom Manila wallpaper files, which basically require simply copy+paste into Windows directory and then restarting TF3D.

That would be great.
I hate how the quality is degraded once you set the Wallpaper.
There is so much difference in quality when viewing a picture in "albums" as opposed to the home screen wallpaper.
I wonder why TF3D lowers the resolution on the home screen.
Please publish a solution. thanks

I actually started a thread in General > Dev and Hacking about this very issue. It didn't get a lot of attention from people with Touch HD's, but none the less, I managed to get down to the bottom of the mysterious TF3D behavior and I can see that the info from that thread got to the people working on visual enhancements for Touch HD.
Basically, it's insanely stupid solution some lazy HTC programmer implemented.
Imagine that TF3D can display images that have maximum size of 512x512. Now imagine you have screen size that's 480x696 pixels (this is how big the wallpapers are). See the problem? The maximum image you can use is 184 pixels short to cover the whole screen.
And then you get a genius idea to use two 512x512 images to cover the screen area and allow full resolution wallpapers to be used. So you take the default HTC wallpaper, split it in two parts, align them perfectly on the screen so it looks as if they're one image - and problem solved!
Right?
Well, not quite. Yes, it will work for default background image, but what about custom wallpapers? Well, they were too lazy to make an automatized script that would split the images in two and align them on the screen.
Instead, they opt for a more convenient solution in form of taking custom wallpapers, shrinking them down into a single 512x512 box and then stretching this downsampled image back to 480x696 area.
And that's whats causing all these problems.
If you want a temporary solution, create 512x512 image - I bet it will look sharper then your 480x800 image.
A true solution is to cheat TF3D and import manually FOUR separate images that together form portrait and landscape wallpapers.
This can be done, and I will explain it in a separate post here when I get some free time. At the moment I'm too busy with FingerKeyboard
Wow, Rozenthal! That would be very interesting! It´s almost a dream I have: to see a quite sharp image on my TF3D Home screen.
A lot of people would be very glad with you if you teach us how to do this.
Thanks a lot in advance
It's not a dream I have it on my screen now...
The problem is in the fact that changing skins cannot be done through Settings tab. It requires editing the appropriate Manila files by using a Manila graphic editor on your PC. Also, this is something that will require at least moderate knowledge of some good graphic editing software (read: Photoshop), because you need to manually prepare split png files for portrait and landscape.
Then you take these files, load them into Manila files, compress them into a special TF3D graphic format, copy them to Windows directory overwriting the old files, turn off TF3D and then pick "Use default wallpaper" in your Settings / Wallpaper tab.
So, it's major pain in the a$$, and it's not something you would be doing on the road, or every day. But, as I said - it CAN be done.
The way I see it, we could probably get some users here to team up, learn the procedure and then simply offer zip-ed Manila files that other people can download and copy into Windows folder. That part is easy, it can be done by anyone. Preparing the wallpapers, however, isn't that simple.
Anyway, I will try to make a tutorial on how to do all this tomorrow.
In the mean time, you can check the thread I mentioned earlier. Altough, be warned that some of the final conclusion posts from that thread were lost during last sunday hack attack on XDA.

[Q] Where/how is the stock lock screen wallpaper stored?

I have been trying to figure this out for some time so I can be rid of as many TouchWiz apps as possible - and after replacing TWiz gallery with the AOSP one I can no longer change the lock screen wallpaper outside of a handful of images that appear to be contained within /system/app/PhotoWall.apk/res/raw
Which include the default dandelion image. However, replacing the jpg files within that APK didn't change my options. There is also a white/red/black squares TMobile thing that has 2 versions in /system/wallpaper/drawable but I tried placing my own image there (making the dimensions the same) and was still not able to select it.
I can't figure out where the dandelion pic is because I can still choose it even though I have replaced it's g1p1.jpg within that PhotoWall.apk file
Anybody know where these things are actually stored so I can choose my own wallpaper once again?
The reason I am not able to choose anymore is that the TWiz interface options for selecting Lock Screen wallpaper apparently only want to let you select it with it's own TWiz Gallery app or this PhotoWall app, thus it won't let me invoke the AOSP gallery app to pick an image.
Thanks in advance!
I've been poking around a little today but still can't figure out why it won't let me load my own jpg files in that app...
Anybody have any suggestions?
I want to know answer as well.
When i change system\framework\........framework-res.apk.......\res\drawable-hdpi\.........keyguard_default_wallpaper.jpg with another same sized 1280 x 1280 jpg file,
IT Never changes it on LOCKSCREEN!

After changing that did you try picking new wallpaper again? I'm going to have to check that apk out now...
Tried replacing "keyguard_default_wallpaper.jpg" with my own same 1280x1280 size image in drawable-hdpi and drawable-xhdpi but no dice. Still seeing the dandelion pic.
sorry for the bump but I am getting pretty lost here trying to figure out where this thing is stored. I keep digging through random APK's and coming up empty. Any dev's or clever users able to help?

[HOW TO] [Custom Wallpapers] w/Gimp 2

NOTE: This is only instructional information for those looking to make their own 1920x1920 edited HD wallpapers and are tired of looking for 1920x1920 wallpapers. I didn't see a similar thread on here and thought I would share some tips for those who aren't familiar with making/editing their own wallpapers.
So I got tired of searching for wallpapers and just edited desktop wallpapers for myself. I just searched on Google for cool stuff, like zombies, movies, anime, digital art, robots, etc, and found a bunch of 1920x1080 wallpapers. I would also recommend adding HD or 1080p in your search criteria to ensure the best quality. Obviously they are made for desktops, so I used Gimp 2 to edit them, by doing an Image > Canvas Size, switching the width to 1080 so it's then 1080x1080. Then do an Image > Scale Image and upscale them to 1920x1920. It's difficult to do because you're essentially taking a rectangular image and making it into a square image when it's not really designed for that. But if you can find the right images, it should be pretty easy to decide how to resize them and to know what to cut off. I've attached an example below. Once you've resized the image to 1080x1080, scale it to 1920x1920, and then if it needs a Sharpen filter, go to Filter > Enhance > Sharpen. And I found out the hard way that Gimp is different from photoshop, as you can't save files that easily as .png/.jpg/.gif file types. You can't just select Save As, you have to go to File and then Export to save it that way.
You can use Photoshop to do this as well. I just particularly prefer Gimp, but to each their own And you can get Gimp for free, just search for Gimp on google.com and it should be the first or second link there that you can download and install it for free. If you want to see more of the ones I've made, as I've made a good bit, just PM me and I can email you a zip file with all the ones I've made in it. If enough people ask for them, I may just edit this post and see if I can just upload them all on here. Or some of them anyway
Image 1. Shows how to resize
Image 2. Shows how to scale image
Image 3. Shows final image
If you have any questions, let me know. (Tried to make this as detailed as possible if you aren't familiar with Gimp or photo editing)

[Q] How do I scale icons to preserve quality?

I found a set of free icons on the web but they are extremely small. I need to make them bigger so they can be viewed in my app, but the problem is that they become blurry when I enlarge them.
How do I make icons bigger but preserve quality? I know it's possible since this icon set is very popular and used in many apps.
Icon set - adamwhitcroft.com/climacons
If you click on the download button, you will also get svg files.
They are vector graphics and therefore scaleable. Just convert them to png or whatever.
Thanks a ton! That worked for me

You can also try TinyPng to reduce the file sizes w/o affecting quality.
eps
EPS vector format is good.
I use font icons in my app instead of *.png images and iI really recommend it.
