[Q] .com/www. button or custom key to Tab button - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Don't get me wrong the .com/www. is a useful button, but I'd rather have a tab button. I was wondering if there was a way to make the .com/www. button or even one of the custom buttons on the physical keyboard turn into a tab button. I'd appreciate any help anyone could give me. (If this is even possible). Thanks!

There is a thread in the dev section about this. Remapping keys is possible by editing the files that contain the layout.
While this is one custom approach and may not suit all your needs, it opens the door to customization for your own purposes.

Want to use the Red End key as "Home"

For ease of use I'd like to use the Vogue's Red End Key as the "home" key for the TF2D roms. Only found 1 rom out of the 4 or 5 that I have flashed that does this. I'd like to use one of the other roms, but I REALLY like this function.
I've looked through the other threads and cannot find the answer.
Can anyone point me at a register key that I can change.
Thanks,

OK button missing -> any way to re-map another key?

so, I'm starting to realize how much I am missing the OK button, either on the side of the phone somewhere or on the keyboard. Is there a way to remap a button on the keyboard to be the OK (oh and TAB) button(s)? Also is there a way to remap a hardware button to be the OK button? (ie volume down twice = OK)?
its amazing the things you find when you search

^^^ all of those are threads about remapping keys. some point you to a program, one points you to an app someone made over in the Rhodium themes, software, etc sub forum. that can be found at the next link. I even ask the guy how to get the "Ok" function a few replies in to the thread & he tells you how. Enjoy

[Q] Adv Key Mapping question. Dev insight appreciated

Recently moved away from IOS JailBreak to Android, and can't say im used to the new FileSystem! I am trying to map keys specifically while the lockscreen is active. Most of my searches are littered w/ the global keylayout method. I noticed how the camera app remaps vol and pwr hard buttons (to zooming and controls lock respectively), while lockscreen nulls the 4 touch keys but keeps the global hard buttons, except camera. IOS JB had "activator". It is able to set button and gesture actions for the lock screen, home screen, while an app was active, and global (across the other 3). I dont need the full "activator", just wish to do lockscreen specific remappings to better utilize unused keys that otherwise have a good function. Anyone know a good FS mod shortcut or does the lockscreen.apk it's self need to be altered to achive this?
You can simply pull the key mapping file off the phone itself and edit it in notepad, save it, and send it back on. You need root though, I believe. Follow this guide and mix it up yourself! There are many tutorials on how to do this, if this certain one isn't too helpful. This one specifically is for the G1 but the steps should be very similar.

Post #4 of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046761. Epic specific button mapping file.
Thanks, but those are, what I refer to as, the global keylayout, because it affects the phone's lockscreen, homescreen, and where ever else applicable. For Example, I am trying to mod the lockscreen camera buttons to control music, but it goes back to the camera buttons @ homescreen. I would also like to set the 4 touch buttons that are normally blocked on the lockscreen to do Media stuff as well. The keylayout overtakes too much. I'm lookin a bit more into the filesystem to day, might look into the AOSP work for better insight. Still open to any suggestions on where 2 look.

[Guide] Change the user buttons to home and back

I was looking to change the user configurable buttons on my Desire Z but couldn't find a easy guide or simple solution. I started to experiment a bit. This is what I found out:
To change the layout you only need to things:
1. a rooted phone
2. A program like Root explorer with R/W permissions
Then do the following:
Go to system/usr/keylayout and open the file for the layout you are using in a text editor (in my case this was the WWE version)
I then changed 'user 1' to 'HOME' and 'user 2' to 'BACK'.
I did a soft reset and I now use the user 1 button to go to the home screen and the user 2 button to go back
note: This guide is problably written a 1000 times but I couldn't find it so I hope it's my first real (small) contribution

Thanks for the guide! And actually, this method can provide some neat tricks!
For example, I personally never use the search button. So instead, I can change the Search key to USER1 and now the search key is a User-Assignable button!
EDIT: It appears that the Search hardware key and the Search touchkey have different key mapping ID. But the virtual Search touchkey doesn't seem to be listed in keylayout at all. Weird.
There's an app for that
Also, AFAIK it should be possible to remap the capacitive search button.

The capacitive search button is 217, which is the same as the hardware search button. But my hardware button is doing what I assigned it, while my capacitive one is not doing anything.
It's either not linking, or my phone's capacitive search button is broken.
How can I make the search key to open recent app (the one where u hold home key and come out a recent app)? Thx

I think it's a bit more difficult, you should look in Andromadus thread where someone did it, there's a zip to download...
edit: here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1516942 the zip is attached, don't know if it works with every rom, surely with andromadus, but we are OT, sorry.

CM9 - Keylayout camera button question...

So I've just installed CM9 ICS on my Samsung Epic 4G. The problem is, I want to add WAKE to the Camera button, however it is not listed in the "cypress-touchkey.kl" keylayout file. I figured I would change it in the Generic.kl file, but that doesn't seem to work.
In 2.3, the camera button was in keylayout, but this is not the case for CM9. I tried added the Camera entry with 212 on the cypress.touchkey.kl but no luck. What should I do?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.
I believe I saw that option in the settings somewhere

While I do appreciate the response, this in no way shape or form actually helps me. Let's say for instance that there is an option in Settings, saying "somewhere" doesn't really help. Second, I asked about the keylayout files. So even if there is a way to do this in the Settings page (which I don't think there is), I was still talking about keylayout files for a reason.
Sorry for sounding rude, but your response does not help me whatsoever. It's like saying that the answer is on the Internet... that's great and all and I'm sure it's on the Internet somewhere, but if I don't know where, then the answer is pretty pointless.
I apologize for my post and I was wrong anyway, there is no option. Sorry for taking your time

Solution
So after messing around with a few things, I finally found the solution which I will list below:
- To change Camera Button you need to edit s3c-keypad.kl
- To change Power Button, Vol+, Vol- you need to edit victory-keypad.kl
- To change soft keys (i.e. home button, menu, back, search) edit cypress-touchkey.kl
So to conclude, it is actually a combination of keylayout files. Please note that there are other listings for the buttons in various keylayout files such as Generic.kl, however do not edit these because they are not what the phone uses. I have tried almost all of the above keys and they have remapped successfully so long as you edit the key values in the .kl files listed above.
I hope this helps someone else who had the same problem.
