Great Android upgrade news for the DEFY - Defy General

Just in case anyone has missed this great official news from Motorola that the Defy is to recieve an upgrade to Android 2.2 (Froyo) and is planned for Q2 2011...
see here:-
https://supportforums.motorola.com/community/manager/softwareupgrades

This is great news!
I think this device worths froyo. Lets hope it want take ages to release it. Moto blur i think is a pain in the neck and will stall them though.
Sent from my GT-P1000

Well maybe it's really great but...Q2 is quite a long time.
But since we have our Defy category now, everything's fine and we could start working with our Defy so that we'll maybe get Froyo faster than Q2

yay!
But this chart also shows that motorola drops the support of all its phones after 6 months, so if we want android 3.0 or even 2.3 someday, we'll have to help devellopers do it!

But first we have to find developers that want to work with the great defy.
If we have them, I would also donate some money so that they can work.
How about the bootstrap recovery that the Droid X community uses?
Would be great

right now I would love cynaogen mod on this device!

I can't wait for 2.2 for the battery and speed increase. Right now my defy is scoring 1104 on quadrant; that's on 2.1 and it's scoring better than galaxy s and a bunch of others. Only the droid x and some others on 2.2 are scoring better. When the defy gets 2.2 it's gonna be a mean little beast.

How are you getting 1104? I'm getting around 935

I'm not entirely sure. Maybe it has something to do with running apps and all that?
I just ran it again. Here's a screenshot.

is it possible to port the froyo motoblur rom of the milestone 2 (European droid 2) to the Defy ?

Impressive. The highest I've gotten is 980.

I've got 1063 - 1067

looking forward to 2.2

+1 and 2.3 !

Just to know, were there many apps in background?
Before performing the quadrant benchmark i close many applications that i don't really need (using advanced task killer) but all the basic services stay alive.
my benchmark history: lowest 1083, highest 1117, many of the times 1103.
Can't wait for 2.2!

Who needs 2.2? this is with JIT Enabled, however gettiing the odd force close with JIT so I have reverted

Quadrant is not a decent benchmark.
Nor is linpack.

How to enable JIT?

HTC Legend dump booting on Hero

On twitter hacker Behnaam told he got a dump of the Legend rom booting on his Hero!

First screenshot:

Working so far:
camera, 3g, video camera and sound
mother****er...
cmon now...release it
Lets see what comes out of this then
Benham is our Hero!
The 2.1 roms were working with such as Lox clean that mine is based on claim to be HTC Legend, was this just changed in strings or is it relevent? Maybe only Lox knows.
benocharm at 10:24 PM from web
Almost everything is done with rebasing to HTC Legend dump, this means we will have friendstream and a very stable BeHero ROM soon
benocharm at 10:25 PM from web
waiting for Lox to be online and unwatermark it
Anyone else notice that the friendstream widget looked different than what I've seen on other screenshots?

Exactly what I was thinking
Just my 2 cents:
I base my roms mostly on AOSP, since the stock/release versions by carriers are usually too slow/bulky, be it native-app performance wise, apk-localization, etc.
Which is why I only rely on the binaries I've compiled myself, with my own compile-time optimizations.
Imagine how much more you have to load when your apk contains all the localizations available, instead of containing JUST the one you need.
Although I do hybridize my apks sometimes.
The HTC Legend is officaly released in the Netherlands yesterday.
So I'm waiting for a good Hero port

I have been thinking the very same.. The hardware difference is so small that i believe the Hero is capable of doing the same as the legend. And the chefs here will make it possible sooner og later.
The only reason i am condering the legend is because it has a very nice design imo.. But i do not think thats enough reason to spend so many money once again

I'm sure that's what he meant when he said "Ever thought about the fact that the leaks we get are in very early releases? and not allways the ones demoed?"
If he had the current ROM he would have said something along the lines of:

[Q] Best kernel for CM6?

After realizing that I made a mistake by ditching my EVO for the Epic; I returned to the EVO and installed CM6. What a difference! Everything is great so far except for battery life (even using profiles on setCPU) so I was wondering what kernel would provide speed, reliability and battery savings. I'm currently running CM6 kernel and I'm getting around 1250 on quadrant (around the same results of the nexus one with froyo) so I'm happy with the speed so far but I would love some more battery life (I'm getting less than 8 hours with moderate use).
Thanks
What I learn is try a kernel for a day or two. Try another.. you will find one. Not saying do this but this is what I'm doing. Just like finding a rom.. always come back to cm6

yes and please, search around the forums before posting, you *MIGHT* get flamed a bit for it. but im using king's kernel #9...but im not on CM6. idk what im on hahaha i dont remember

Geez, my bad. For some reason I thought I was in the general section.
Can a mod move this thread to the general section? Thanks
Before this gets moved.. all hardware is different. On paper its the same, but what we have learned is that phones respond differently to the software thrown at them. As others suggested, try them out. Snap as well as Kings are excellent kernels. Just find there threads and I can't stress enough to read the op. Most of the questions you have can be found there, as it can be a little cumbersome with all the different versions for some. But yeah, make sure to give it a run for a few days before you decide its not working for you. Your phone needs to get used to it, so basing it off a charge after a few cycles is always a good idea.

Run Snap v7.5 for an increase in speed and battery life.
King's Kernel all the way, and I've tried all the damn Snap kernels.
Mostly, you should be managing your wifi/3g/screen off cpu settings.

My benchmark results LOWER than a Evo 2.2? WTF

A couple of week ago I did a benchmark test, it came back 944, well below an Evo 2.2. A couple of days ago I rooted my phone, still on stock SENSE rom and I ran the test again, these are my results,

How the hell is this possible? Lol. I'm below a Evo 2.2 yet, my Evo is on 2.2. Can someone explain?
Does your phone perform fine otherwise?
Benchmarks are for the kids but it does seem a little low
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
The benchmarks don't mean anything, just gloating. If you overclock it you'll get better scores.
I hate benchmarks I think they are inaccurate, plus evos react different with every different rom you flash. If my evo is not sluggish then its fast. Maybe its time to try another rom. Find one that has all or most of the bloat ware taken out they seem to be faster.
Good luck.
sent from my !πf€©£€d Evo 4g using XDA APP
Like stated earlier, those scores really don't mean much. If it bugs you, and you want to see a higher score, make sure a bunch of stuff is not running in the background before you run the quadrant test.
Use osmonitor or seepu+ from the market to see if anything is using your cpu, you probably have an app that is hogging it. It's possible that's a sign of malware too since the exploit they use will eat up your resources.
I posted about this a few days ago and got similar answers. I can't make mine go higher than 1150 (using Koni's Elite Series II, MS79723's SBC #15 v7 kernel. Did it on a fresh restart).
I have no idea what they're basing these tests on, but it sure as hell isn't our Evos lol.
Fear not though. Our UI runs on CPU and not on the GPU, so unless you play video games your benchmark actually doesn't matter at all. One thing the Evo is known for apart from other, newer phones is we're still running the Adreno 200 GPU while others have newer chip sets.
If you want faster scores here's some tips:
Get SetCPU and overclock your processor
Use xHausx's suggestion about checking to make sure your processor isn't being used.
Get an AOSP rom (like MIUI, CM6 or CM7). Without Sense, the phone runs faster and it'll show.
Get a kernel that performs better. Best bet is Netarchy for Sense. I don't know the kernels from AOSP.
I'm sure there's a few speed hacks/scripts/mods you can find too, but unless your Evo is actually the Evo 3D and not our Evo, then your benchmarks are gonna come up short.
As long as it feels fast to you I wouldn't worry about it.
my benchmark is lower, but my phone is still super smooth and you wouldnt tell the difference from scrolling or using an app. opening an app takes a lil longer
@245mhz
My phone lags, especially playing games. I'm also using Launcher Pro Plus, does that have anything to do with it? How can I get rid of this Sprint bloatware?
titanium backup will uninstall bloatware, our you can flash a custom rom with no bloatware included
What performance did you expect running a gps on 1 bar?
top kill
My non overlocked EVO running Tiamat 3.1.3 and CM7 hits around 1400 in quadrant. I'm happy with that.

ATTENTION AT&T USERS, the "Android Native Tilt2"

To all you guys on AT&T, just letting you know there is an HTC Android phone available that is nearly identical to the Tilt 2. It is called the HTC Desire Z. It has pretty much the same keyboard as the Tilt 2. The processor is much better too at 800 MHz. Now I know what you're thinking, "Oh but it isn't even a 1GHz processor?" Well, the thing is, this processor is actually underclocked, and runs flawlessly at 1.2 GHz and beyond. The reason for that is because it is a newer type of Snapdragon and is faster than other 1 GHz Snapdragons (like the HD2 for example) running at only 800 MHz. Check this phone out, it's worth it if you want Android native and that HTC keyboard.
Just a quick note, there are a few different versions of the phone, but you need one specific version to work on AT&T 3G. It must be the A7275 version. In other words, it must be from Bell Canada and unlocked. It can be found on ebay as low as $450 without contract. It's been out for a few months, but now down to a fairly reasonable price. Not trying to move you who love your Tilt2 away from it, just some info in case you want a similar device with native Android. Quick shoutout to the XDAndroid developers though, I've used it a lot on my Tilt 2 and it has come so far in these past few months. Great job by all of them.

Nope, but it does have a quirky little mechanism that makes the keyboard come out in a very cool way. It's called the Z-hinge, look it up on youtube, very interesting how the keyboard 'slides' out (although it doesn't really slide).
It has pretty much the same keyboard as the Tilt2 and a teeny bit bigger screen, but much less thickness. The processor is better and is actually underclocked. It runs perfectly at stock speed but is crazy fast when overclocked (overclocking is very stable on this phone). All games work perfectly on it without a hitch graphically. If you liked the possibilites of winmo, you will love the abilities to customize on native android with all the custom ROMs and such.

Ha we wouldn't even get ICS because "DHD can't run ICS" or "sense 3.0 is the best setup for DHD"

That would be quite interesting if it would be true. But keeping in mind what happened before it's totally not worth looking forward to this. Neither the source is confirmed/reliable...
Very, very unlikely since we were skipped by the ICS update, and other manufacturers are dropping their dual core phones...
This was most probably a typo.
And since most of us on XDA are already rooted, I would definitely go with a mooded JB anyway
would be a dream we hope. :good:

They didnt say it cant run ics, they recognised it could but it woukd mean a full wipe because if partitioning size. And keeping the customers data integrity intact comes before everything else. The desire x - not sure - then the hd is a type or the whole things fabricated. Somebodys having a laugh. Still hoping for the ics update on htcdev, if that does come it really will be the last.
True I believe it when I see it, and with HTC we will never see it.
think so im running a 4.2.2 atm its not great but its a custom rom it doesnt lag that much but it doesnt have google services which is a downside to this one...

We don't know yet, since it's not out yet, so we don't know what it entails.
First time I've read it I thought about a pure android 4.2 versión without sense ...
I think that 5.0 will be not much more heavier than 4.2
