WiFi issues? - Defy General

I'm really satisfied about defy's performances but there's something i can't figure out with WiFi connection. I'm currently using a netgear wireless-N router which works flawlessy with all the other devices, my defy instead is not able to stay connected for more than 10 seconds, keeping disconnecting and re-connecting to the router, continuosly. No way to use the browser or the market under Wi-Fi.
I'm also on a motorola's forum, there i found other people who experienced the same issue. Some of them say the problem is related to wireless-N routers and yes, it looks like defy works better with wireless-G routers (tested).
Btw, no problem with the 3G.
I was wondering if some of you, here in xda, got trouble with defy's WiFi.

FWIW, I use my defy with my linksys wrt54gl router with no issues whatsoever, so it very well may be the wireless n being the issue.

I'm using an access point (netgear) with wireless N and i'm connected to Wifi all the time. I've had this mobile for a week so i haven't noticed myself getting disconnected on skype...but it works fine with N

I see a wifi issue with my fritz.box as well. wifi is (and stays) connected, but no data is going through. I've found various tips like using static ip or using different channels, but in the end they didn't work for me.
so I rooted the defy and modified the tiwlan.ini where ht_enable was set from 1 to 0, which actually disables N, but gives me a reliable connection instead.
hth

thanks for your replies.
@trosenda
Most of the times it keep disconnecting but sometimes it stays connected but there's no flow of data, that is what happened to you.
I will try your method, disabling N (ht_enable set to 0) probably forces defy to go through G only.
thanks

I have a netgear wifi g and I have some trouble with defy which keep on disconnecting so I can't use the browser or the market...It's not related with wifi n because my router is only g but the problems are there...If you found a solution can you post a step by step explanation?

Solved I figured out defy don't like wifi n routers and protected ones. With a router that broadcasts on g channels with no protection (btw only mac adress control access) the defy works like a charm...hope this help others

Thanks.
Yes the problem is exactly what you said - defy doesn't like too much w-N and secured routers. Not all the people have this issue, however, it has been reported to Motorola through their forum. Let's wait for their answer, hopefully there could be a kind of fix.

I was having the same issue with my Belkin N (secured) in my house. But in two other buildings I have G routers w/o issues. So, I figured, just swap the N for a G, right? No. As soon as I tried either of the G routers in the house, same problem as with the N. So I put the Belkin back in the house and spent some time adjusting its three external antennae. Bingo! I now have as solid a connection with the N as with my two other G routers. Must have been interference. Phones? Applianaces? Sonos? BTW the only other thing I had with the same trouble was my PS3. Now, it's connected perfectly as well. Interference.

I'm online through my Linksys 610n router, haven't skipped a beat since I got the phone...

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that turning of the n-standard on my router, going to b/g mixed (from b/g/n) worked great, no more disconnections. Before, is disconnected like all 20 seconds or so.

What worked for me:
My router is a netgear dgn1000 (a/b/g/n), i had WiFi issues for long time, i tried with the G mode only, tried all the possible configurations (both on phone and router), but nothing to do, disconnections every 10 seconds still going on.
Finally i got it working by following these three steps:
1) Update the router firmware (my router was updated to 1.1.00.41)
Then from your dgn1000 configuration page - 192.168.0.1 -
2) Go to "Wireless settings", switch to G mode
3) Go to "LAN Setup" and assign an address reservation to your defy (e.g. 192.168.0.5)
Note: I tried 2) and 3) before the firmware was updated, no success. So, if you have a dgn1000, first of all update the firmware.
Hope this can help

I don't lise connection but the signal is very weak with Wifi. 3g réception is inside on the other hand

I had the DGN1000 with firmware 1.1.00.35 and my Milestone 2 was connecting very well. Now, I have a DGN1000 with the 1.1.00.28 and my Milestone 2 doesn't connect at all: every 10 secs the connection is re-established with a new dhcp request.
Do you think I ONLY have to change my firmware? Or I have to change also the address reservation?

hi,
why my DEFY wifi N only connect at 65mbit ???? why not 150mbit???
who knows something about it ???

Hmmmm don't know what to say I gotta netgear dng 2000 have no problem with connection just that the router was a lil weak. Fixed that with antenna replacements. Defy has the 2.2.2 Nordic deblur

XDA IIs Wifi and lockups

Does anyone have a problem with their wifi locking up their xda iis? I have bought a linksys router and am getting frequent lockups when using wifi. I am using the shipped O2 rom, thanks
I have no problem at all with Netgear router. Try changing the connection speed setting in the router to the "b" mode only. Hopefully this can solve your problem.
No problems here either I'm afraid. I'm using a Draytek Vigor 2600VG at home and at work there are two of us with XDA IIs using a Linksys BEFDSR41W wireless router and no problems there either.
Sorry! :-(
Try a hard reset (gulp!) and see if you still have problems (Without anything else installed that might be inteferring) otherwise might be a faulty unit perhaps.
--Neil
I second what xanth said, I had the problem where wifi would not turn on, so I hard reset and installed each software back individually the problem was Calligrapher 7.3 did not like being in Storage or Storage Card only in Main memory (go figure)

I use the XDA IIs on a variety of wireless networks and experience problems with an alarming regularity. The most annoying is the fact that the top bar seems to loose functionality, when using wireless!!
I will actually add that I do seem to have problem with the "range" of WiFi.
I need to do more testing, but it doesn't seem to be more than 20m or so before have communication issues/timing out :-( Will have to find out what our walls are made of!!!
I have problems connecting sometimes. I regularly use three routers, Draytek, Buffalo and Belkin. The only time that it locks up is when using skype. The skype problem is a known issue with no cure.

I am having a problem where my Siemens SX66 will loose connection to my Microsoft MN700 wireless AP on occasion. -It simply appears as if the Wifi radio shuts itself off.
Weird.....
Wifi has never worked for me. It simply doesn't work in the way nature intended.
The main problem (as far as I can tell) seems to be that it cannot get DNS or IP configuration settings from my router (Belkin 7630) automatically.
It can connect to my wireless network without any hassle, but that's about it. If I enter DNS and IP settings manually it works fine. But this is unworkable if you want to connect to another wireless network.
If I can't sort this out by next week I'm going to sell the unit on eBay. It's been nothing but a pain since I mistakenly bought it in December.
Wifi is a nightmare on this device! I'm going back to Nokia.
I am going to do a hard reset and test to see if i still get any freezes. Anyone know of any software i can use to backup my text messages?
WiFi
Hi guys,
Haven't had too many issues with WiFi over here - standard O2 Asia ROM (with the BT 3500 update).
I'm running a Netgear WG602 @ home with 64bit WEP and a Dlink AP2100 @ work with WPA-PSK. No connectivity problems at either location, both DHCP. It does however take a few minutes to connect, but this is on the odd occasion.
The only frustrating thing with the WiFi is that I have to soft-reset often to turn Wi-Fi on - any ideas? Hopefully O2 will fix this in the next ROM. Other than that, I've had the Nokia 9500, P900/800 and this is by far the best device for the power user.
Just me 2c!
Cheers
cK
Wifi is on all the time on my device, sometimes when I switch the device on while within range of an AP it does not connect. Often switching wifi off and then onn again causes it to connect. If this does not work then I can often go into the network dialogue section, and see the network marked as 'availble' but not connected (why it sometimes does not auto connect I dont know). Tapping connect usually cures. If that does not work then I too need to soft reset.
I hope like you that they fix this cause its damned anoying. I will be interested to see what the Benq P50 is like when its released. I shall get one from expansys to test and ship it back within the 7 days.
Nigel
As for those having problems with specific access points. It is not nessesarily the fault of the blue angel. It seems to me that none of the manufacturers of wireless kit understand the term 'standard' they all seem to have their own take on it, which is why kit from different manufacturers refuses to talk to each other. I am of the opinion that they do it in purpose to lock you into using their client cards with their AP's !!
Try it with some non Belkin kit and see what happens.
Nigel
Well i tried a hard reset and didnt install any apps and tried connecting to wifi again and still got a lockup and loss of connectivity. Im going to swap the router for another make and see what happens
Swapped my linksys router for a D-Link and so far no problems after 2 days. so looks like my problem was my router.

XDA IIi and wifi
I just bought one of these and can't get it connected. I have a netgear wg602 access point. When I finally figured out how to set the IP manually (the 02 xda tech support said it can't be done - maybe they're right ;-)
I now have it saying it's connected, with right IP address. My DNS and gateway are set up for the wireless adapter in network adapters. The signal is average. The XDA says wifi is connected. The access point even says it's authenticated and associated - same as my other stations.
Only problem is, internet explorer doesn't find any web pages - says "The page you are looking for cannot be found" (works fine through GPRS)
Also, terminal services times out trying to connect to an internal IP address (to eliminate DNS as a problem)
So, anyone know how I troubleshoot network problems - it looks like a TCP/IP issue? Can't find ping or arp etc. I've also tried an IP address that I know works on the network.
thanks for any help
Dave
Hi
For ping, ipconfig and stuff, head to http://www.cam.com/windowsce.html
I have had multiple issues trying to get wifi working reliably. It still fails now, but there are a few tricks to get it working again. Most of my wifi issues have been due to regular use of three AP's [email protected] and [email protected] along with GPRS and VPN.
To start with I suggest setting all the ****e in connections (internet and home network to 'My ISP' then goto your wifi setup, network adapters, and tell it that the wireless card connects to the internet. Now, tap ok, and goto tools, network cards, tap the active connection (it must already be connected) and ensure that its set to internet.
Next soft reset the thing, and wait for it to connect to yr wifi. Now, use the ipconfig tool and ping tool from the above site to check that all is OK. Check that its got the default gateway right and a sensible LAN IP.
I have found on occasion that I can be connected via wifi, but that the device is still trying to talk using an old IP allocated by gprs which means nothing to my lan! IPconfig will show if all is OK.
Whoever wrote the whole of the networking system (and its terrible gui's) on windows mobile wants shooting. I usually have 2 VPN profiles setup under my work network. If I leave it set to that, and use wifi from my lan to connect to the internet all is fine. However if I try and access a local server, the damned thing starts trying to connect a vpn (it aint inteligent enough to work out that the IP I asked it to connect to is local).
I have been trying to find a setting for all this networking rubbish that allows me to do *everything* without reconfiguring each time - to no avail.
Another thing to note is that you cant send/receive MMS messages while wifi is connected (more stupidity), it tries to connect to the MMS server using the wifi connection, and the telco blocks it cause it wants to charge you for sending MMS over GPRS. Only solution is to disconnect wifi, send MMS then reconnect wifi!!!
Nigel
No problems with WiFi for me
Hmm I'm using an O2 Asia Rom as well.. and my wifi manager seems to automatically create "settings" for each AP it detects and I seem to have no problems connecting at all... been using WiFi around my house since the first day i got it..
i am using a Linksys Wireless 802.11b router..
btw I am new here.. finally able to register!
How's everybody doing?
Cannot turn off IEEE 802.1x
Has anyone had problems unchecking the 'IEEE 802.1x netwrok access control' checkbox???
I uncheck it, but then when I go back to the screen (click on the connection | then select 802.1x tab at the bottom) it has checked itself again!
The XDA IIs does not save the setting - it just keeps re checking itself 02 help have been no use - they sent me an instruction manual and it even says in one of the step 'uncheck IEEE check box'
Im am using a netgear wirelesss router and have also tried on a d-link
Sugestions - is anyone else having this problem??

Artemis WiFi and Belkin N1 Router

@ all,
it might sound a bit surprising, but I dont get my new artemis ( i now own one with wifi !, my hero didnt!),
working with the wireless of my belkin n1 router!
everytime i enter the mac adress into the router, wlan stops alltogether! ( do i need to enter the mac adress?)
entering the normal wpa-psk passwords into wm6.1 vanilla or b&b5, the connection constantly changes between available, but not connecting, and unavailable... even when sitting right next to the router!
any ideas?
help highly appreciated!

news:
got it working for now-- changed wlan channel in rpouter to channel11, which is preset in wm6.1!
is that how its done?
Update:
most of the times the router just kills the wlan function all in all once i try to connect with the artemis!
Need to reboot router to get it running again!
Where am i going wrong?
p.s. no, i aint a novice
I've got the same roblem mate. Not got a clue what to do ?
Had the same issue with a Belkin N router yesterday. Solution I dumped it went down to Maplins and got a Netgear. Plugin and I was away.
Had flashed the rom serveral times (Win 5, 6, 6.1 some of the cooked roms) nothing worked was thinking it was a hardware failure.
Dont' appear to matter how you set the belkin nothing works.
Thou oddly my Exec connects with it just fine.

Gee, that would for sure make me one unhappy pal!
Anybody around here has another idea!
Possibly some tips on "Must does" ! for connecting via wifi with artemis! Whats with the mac address-thing?!!!
Greetz
To be honest, I've looked at dozens of sites searching for a solution to this issue. Everything from flashing the ROM (Device and router), enter MAC on the router, set a IP address, changing channels, security settings and nothing appear to work with the Belkin N family.
My experience with Belkin has not been good (Tech support has always been first class).
The first router (Cheap 54g) would run for 2 hours then lockup, requiring a reset of both the router and cable modem). Replaced by Belkin after several days talking to tech support.
The second router (Same 54g unit, different Version number) Ran fine until you moved data about, anything downloading above 150k locked the router. Wired connections could do 300k then lock up. Replaced by Belkin.
The third unit (Upgraded to a 2 stick version for free) DOA. Replaced by Belkin
The forth unit (Same 2 stick version) worked data transfers good but would not allow wifi connections other than WEP 64. Firmware update would then WEP 128. Replaced by Belkin.
The Fifth unit (Same 2 stick version, different version) Wifi worked with all settings. However with wifi on all wired connections ran like a 56k modem. Replaced by Belkin.
The sixth unit (Upgraded to the N) Worked fine. Wired connections fine, wifi was a bit hit or miss, two Toshiba laptops connected fine, the Dell laptop never connected. Belkins own N usb dongle also never connected.
My Orbit never connected to any of the Belkins, the Exec did with some and others not.
This issue is not limited to Belkin, if you look about, other makers routers also appear to have this issue.
The cheap Netgear (£35) works just fine for me. Took 5 minutes to setup. Everything in the house connects. I`m happy after 7 months of Belkin issues.
uiuiui,
what a story!
just so we dont get us wrong here: had my n1 now for about 6months, and its running just fine with all my notebooks! - just since trying to connect with my artemis i am running into probs!
A theory of this mornings trials:
any way of changing the preconfigured broadcast channel 11 within the artemis? --- seems to me the channelchanging is causing the hangups!
will try setting the router to channel 11 and see what happens!
greetz
Ive set channel to 6 in the N router, the Art/Orbit will find it and go though the motions of connecting and make it unavailable (our problem with N routers). The Network setting will show its on ch6 (if you can there before it becomes unavailable). Then goes to ch11.
I think the Art/Orbit just runs in sequence though the channels, if it gets a lock it uses that channel. If not it moves on, I think we just see ch11 because its the last ch available in the scan.
Have just played with the Netgear channels and the Art/Orbit connects with every channel, the Network setting page shows the correct channel that the routers broadcasting.
So it don't appear that the channel is hard coded to the Art/Orbit.
Ok stumbled across this thread a little too late. Our Linksys wrt54g was not able to handle the kind of data we were transferring and moved to a Belkin_N1 router, I have an HTC Wizard but same symptoms, if I try to connect to Belkin I can not connect to anything WIFI before a soft-reset, I get prompted for key fine once and during connection something messes up the wifi radio, I am not sure if its a software or hardware issue but got the same issue with an SMC router, while my D-Link at home is working fine. I wasted so much time flashing ROMs and what not. Thanks for everyone who has put info here, somebody can read here and save the pain of hitting the wall with frustration.

[Q] WiFi problems after Froyo update

After installing the Froyo update yesterday I seem to be having troubles with my WiFi connection. The connection is being dropped after a half an hour or so and I'm unable to reconnect at that time. The Desire just keeps connecting and disconnecting to my network.
I need to reset my router in order to re-establish the connection but it gets dropped again after a half an hour.
I did not experience these problems on the previous version, I did however experience something like it when I connected my PS3 to the router via WiFi in the past. After I done that I wasn't able to connect on my laptop. But I switched to a cable for the PS3 after that anyway.
Is it possible that something on the Desire triggers an overload in the router that causes it to malfunction? I'm unable to connect with my laptop when the connection is dropped on the Desire as well.
It's a Belkin f5d7632-4, which is actually a modem-router, but after disabling the DHCP server it functions fine as a wireless router.
Thank you in advance for any ideas.
If I can't find a solution I think I have to get a new wireless router, I can't go without WiFi on my Desire at home!
If that's the case, advice for a new wireless router is welcome as well. Please post the brand and type and if it's functioning fine with the new Froyo for you.
I have the same issue. I went from standard, unbranded 2.1 to OTA 2.2 like a good citizen, but now it won't connect to my belkin wirless N router, but it DOES connect to my SKY netgear router.
What's the deal?
Yes, I've spotted some more Belkin N1 users on (the dutch website) Tweakers.net with the same problem.
I retain a good connection for about half an hour. They seem to be having the same problem right from the start.
I have a similar problem with a BT HomHub 2.0 but it drops the WiFi randomly however I do not reset the router just turn the WiFi Off and On on the phone and the Desire reconnects. My Desire will also change which SSID its connected too, i.e. from my own SSID to BT Fon or BT Openzone (I have them both turned on in my Home Hub) again to get back to my own SSID I have to stop and restart the WiFi on the phone, simply asking it to move back to my own SSID doesnt work.
Just had a call with HTC Netherlands and they advised me to try it on a different network/router and/or do a factory reset to a clean 2.2.
Has anyone tried the factory reset? I doubt that will do any good. A different router would seem to work according to Jammy1 (and I didn't expect otherwise).
Apparently something killed the compatibility between Belkin routers and Android 2.2 ?!
do you guys have the Bluetooth turned on?I realised when both the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on at the same time, the signals tend to clash thereby resulting to connection loss. Though,I experienced this on another android device (a tablet:Archos 5 AIT) especially when a major update occurs.Still waiting for my new Desire.
Random drops also on Linksys WRT54GL with Tomato firmware...

No Bluetooth here. Never even used it.
Try turning off the bluetooth.
Bought myself a cheap Sitecom WiFi router and it works like a charm now. But I hope HTC wil fix this and other little bugs present in this version.
I had similar problems after upgrading to Froyo (custom rom) - the Wifi seemed to get connection then as soon as I tried to use it within the browser it dropped and tries to regain IP. After a bit of fiddling with settings I have found that
i) using channel 12 (12 and 13 are only available if router is set to America location) to avoid conflict with heavy wireless coverage in my area seems to help
ii) using WPA2 encryption seems to give a much stabler connection over WPA, although now and again it forgets the passkey data, even re-entering it fails, only solve was to turn wifi off then on for it to reconnect
still having this problem...
does anybody have some news on this ?
I can connect to my home router a linksys wrt600n with WPA2-PSK key but i cant connect to a belkin N1 with WPA2-PSK enabled.
I tried every setting on the belkin router, just cant get it to connet.
My device just keeps connecting and disconnecting, it gets an ip but cant connect...
What i haven't tried is setting a maual ip and see if it connects then.
If i set it to manual ip, it works.
Does anybody have some news on this ?
What channel is your router on? Read somewhere about it not liking anything over 11...
I've been having the same issue on my Desire and on HD2Android.
If a 2.1 ROM is loaded into either of my devices TKIP and AES work perfectly.
With 2.2 it only connects through my Marconi router and doesn't obtain an IP from my Belkin N1.
I don't think this is a device issue but rather a ROM/OS issue. After speaking with some Linux guys they seem to have the opinion that the driver on 2.2 doesn't resolve it's IP address with some routers. Especially higher end ones with added features like QoS ie Belkin/Linksys.

Yes that was my initial thought !
But my linksys is newer then my belkin and it has no problems connecting my phone.
The 2 wireless routers are configured the same.
On android 2.1 i had no problems.
is it possible to try and install the 2.1 wifi drivers on 2.2 ?
i had the same problem 2 months ago when i first got my Desire. worked at just about every damn wifi router but the one in my house.
did some reading, no one had an answer. just seemed that it worked on some and not on others. so, i went out to the store and i picked up a Linksys after testing the linksys at the shop. my phone connected and had internet no problem. i thought, perfect, i'll take it.
brought it home, same problem. wifi connects and no internet. no setting would fix it. i brought it back to the store. and sure enough, we plugged that very router into their connection and my phone connected and worked. they obviously would not return the router because it works (and i live in a 3rd world country, forget about it).
so, **** if i could figure it out. i wound up using an older adsl/wifi router i had and no problems. but, i have a new linksys that is just sitting in a box...
its not your router, but the phone.
you can always sell the router on internet or the phone

I had contact with HTC Scandinavia and they also recommended a factory reset. But these guys haven't got a clue - they didn't even know this was a big problem after the froyo update. Weird when you think about it, I mean wifi is kind of a big thing for a smart phone.
But no, factory reset did NOT change a thing. And replying to other messages: this thing has nothing to do with what router you use. It seems totally random almost.

WiFi Keeps Dropping/Disconnecting Through Second Router

First of all, I have internet from Time Warner Cable and it came with a router/modem all in one. Now that was initially set up and that works 100% perfectly with my SGS2. Since I have a weak WiFi signal upstairs in a couple of rooms, I decided to hook up an extra router that is set up as an access point. The second router is connected via a cat5e lan to lan to my main router (home is wired with cat5e connections).
Now on the second router, I have disabled DHCP since the main router is responsible for that. On the second router, I set up a different SSID first to test it out. All wired and wireless connections worked great through my laptop/Xbox 360, PS3. My SGS2 connected fine as well and worked.
Now the issue is that the SGS2 "drops" the WiFi after some time. Sometimes it happens after 5 minutes, sometimes 30 minutes, etc. Even with the SGS2 right next to the router it happens. Meanwhile, my laptop stays connected the whole time.
I can't seem to figure out what the issue is now. I've reset the second router a couple times and set it up all over fresh but it doesn't fix the problem. Seems to be a problem with my brother's Sensation as well. Is there something with Android and access points or going through a second router that causes issues? Any other settings I'm overlooking? SGS2 connected to the main router stays connected until I turn WiFi off. But to the access point, it drops out after some time.
FYI: Second router (access point) is running DD-WRT firmware.
If you need any other info, just ask. I'll be home from work in a couple hours. I've been messing with this for the last 2 weeks but nothing seems to work. Please help! Thanks.
Hmm thats very odd. Im running a similar setup as you, except my main and 2nd router connect via 5ghtz N.
Have you tried statically your phone with an IP address then modifying your main router (that gives DHCP) to reflect that IP is permanently assigned?
edit: to hard set your phone...settings-->wireless and network-->wifi settings, then menu key and advanced. Just fill in the IP and gateway info, and obviously use something in your DHCP subnet. You'll have to look at your DHCP subnet, but you'll probably use 255.255.255.224 as your mask, and use your gateway (your main router IP) as your DNS.

Thanks.

Try giving your phone a static IP from your main router. Also make sure that you adjust your phones wifi settings under advanced settings so that your phone stays connected to wifi during sleep. Hope that helps.

Well my phone is getting the same IP address each time, whether I connect to the main router's SSID or the second router's SSID. But I will try this static IP. One problem is that I don't know how to find out my DHCP range. There's nothing in the main router's settings about the range. The second router has an option to set the IP address range for DHCP but the main router doesn't. See attached image.
I'll try to set the static IP around what the IP addresses of other devices on the network are since I don't know the exact range. Let me know if I'm doing this wrong. Not sure what you meant by 255.255.255.224 there.
The static IP didn't make a difference. Still keeps disconnecting/dropping after some time. Meanwhile, the connection with the main router stays connected. Don't know what else I can do. Seems that my HP Touchpad running CM9 stays connected to the second router without dropping. Don't know what's different about that from my phone.

Does anybody have some instructions on how to set up the second router as an access point? I'm pretty sure I set it up correctly but apparently there seem to be some issues. People who have a similar setup that can help would be great.
Main router from cable company with built in modem where internet connectivity comes from is downstairs. Connect cat5e from LAN of main router to LAN of second router upstairs. Second router set up as access point for better WiFi coverage upstairs.
2 options for second router: DD-WRT D-Link DIR-615 or D-Link DIR-625.
"Could" buy some other recommended router for this and try that if needed, but would definitely prefer to use what I have and get this to work.
This might be completely off but I had a similar issue with my SII when connecting to 802.1x networks at my University. I downloaded this app called wifi fixer and it resolved the wifi connection drop for about 90% of the time. Give it a shot, it might do wonders for ya.

I tried it and it didn't work. I think it's something to do with DHCP or some other settings.

First you need to find out if your router is supported. According to the DD-WRT database, the 615 is, the 625 is not. But there are several revisions of that router, so you need to find out what revision you have. It should be on your label.
Router database
Then you need to decide whether you want a repeater, an access point, or client bridged. You can read the differences in the DD-WRT wiki found HERE
Then you need to find the best build to flash to your router. I suggest reading the overview of the 615 found HERE. Read the ENTIRE thread. If you flash the wrong version to your router, you WILL brick it.
Then flash the appropriate firmware, set it up, and youre done. Youre going to have to do some reading.
edit: I would also suggest downloading wifi analyzer on your phone and do a site survey of available channels in your house. Most likely you WILL have interference from neighbors. Youre going to want to hard set your channel to the least congested channel, either 1, 6, or 11. Once you get DD-WRT set up on your 615 you can do a site survey within the router as well.
change the channel on your router to 6 not 11 i had that issue with our second router and actually my nook color. Depending on the router it should be under wireless settings.

The only reason to use one over the other is congestion. Thats it. And you want to use 1, 6, or 11 because the DIR615 has N capability, and you need a wifi primary channel to use N. Theres only 3 primary channels...1, 6, and 11.
edit: Heres a technical overview of N: CLICK ME!

I have actually done all that. The DIR-615 is an E1 version and I flashed the correct DD-WRT firmware on it. I followed a tutorial from the DD-WRT website to set it up as an access point as well. My laptop works perfectly with it. Just my phone keeps dropping the connection from it. My main router is on channel 11 and the second router is on channel 6. I also tried channel 1 but it didn't help.
I might just to try set it up as a second router on a different subnet than the first router and see if that helps. Going to try to follow this Youtube video and see how it goes.

Hhmm ok. Well your main router shouldn't have anything to do with it. When it drops does it re-aquire an IP and reconnect? Honestly if a reboot of the router doesn't fix it and your laptop doesn't have the same issue, its pointing to the phone.
Maybe a factory reset?

It reconnects when I unlock the phone. Sometimes I have to reset the Wifi on the phone. Have set the Wifi connection to never sleep. My brother's Sensation was doing this as well. I'll have to test it out on his phone and see. I'll probably reset my phone later today and see if that works.

[Q] One X serious wifi problem

cHi all.
I got my new htc one x week ago. The problem is everytime i connect out home wifi, it works for some tíme and then, after 40minutes approx, wifi goes down and cannot be reconnected not even by computer or other phones. I ides to connect via dads samsung ave and it worked without problems. Is there a way my htc one x could be doping something with router? We also had people here from the providers company and they.changed everything, changed the type of.router, antena etc, yet still after.connecting wifi it only works some tíme. Then blackout. And have to reset whole wifi router...
Thank you for your answers.
Best regards,
Martin

Got the same problem with my HOX. I'm using a d-link router DIR-615. For me the only solution was to switch from a/b/g/n to only g (the 2.4Ghz band). When connected to Wifi via N band, I must reset the router frequently. So try to switch your router to G band only (2.4). Many forum talk about this issue but it seems this is more related to Android OS itself. Some user tried other combination like DHCP or Static IP, different security level (wep, wpa, wpa2). Hope this helped! If you find a better solution please tell me, i wish i could use my router in the 5Ghz band.

This is a good idea:good:. find the channel with less trafic with wifi analyser https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd and set your router to that channel.
I had the same problem on a netcomm router. I had to replace my router anyway, so I ended up getting a netgear router and the problem has completely stopped.
It works on both 2.4G & 5G bands without hassle since changing. It also works on my work router which is a linksys.
I think there must be some issues between the HOX and certain brands of routers.

The HOX isnt the only android device to experience this exact same issue (xperia x10,HTC Evo, HOX,Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830, Xoom, Toshiba scribe, droid x) Maybe its related to some android builds or device's radios? Some pple are reporting this on many brands of router(Linksys,d-link, Sagemcom, cisco) but not all model of those brands and some of them reported that different settings resolved this issue (a/b/g/n to only g or b+g, AES to TKIP, wpa/wep or no security...). Its very strange and I hope someday they will find the cause of this HUGE problem. But for now Google and manufaturers are speaking like if this issue doesn't exist.
But i'm sure there is a way to solve this before replacing the router...

when i had weird router problems, basically my hox and only the hox caused the router to stop working completely for every device until rebooted, it even took out the other router that it was connected to.
my fix was changing the band thing as above. just try each setting and test each one
