Weird bug - Defy General

very werid...
I did a lot of trial and test to make sure I can produce this bug every time.
I placed my Motorola Defy on top of my spare laptop that is covered by a thick cloth. When I picked up my phone to use it (the screen was already turned off) I pressed the power button and I noticed the screen was already unlocked.
After investigating what might have caused it I found out how the screen was unlocked. My spare laptop is Acer 8371. When the lid is closed the Acer badge (kind of big) is on the left bottom side of the laptop.
Here is the weird bug... if I place my Motorola Defy on top of the laptop where the acer badge is and the phone is positioned half way between the back cover's motorola logo and the locker then the car docker application would be launched which unlocks the phone. Then as soon as I pick up the phone the car docker application is inactivated (still running in the background) and the home screen is shown.
Once I made sure that I can reproduce this bug then the security vulnerability came in my mind. I did a basic test and it seemed as soon as you pick the phone up or try to use it the lock screen comes on.
After further investigation...
I initially assumed I need to tap the phone slightly over the Acer's badge to kick start the car docker application but I can confirm now as soon as I take my phone close to the Acer's badge and even still holding the phone in my hand the same thing happens.
In my earlier tests there was a thick cloth on top of the laptop and for my latest test I removed the thick cloth and managed to reproduce the bug far more quicker.
Whatever the Acer's badge is made of fooling Motorola Defy that the phone is being docked. Now that I have to keep my phone away from the acer's badge material I kind of relate to superman's misery when he was avoiding kryptonite.

And they all laugh at me for having a HP.
I wonder how many other people are having the same issue and with what models, if not all.
I just tried it on both HP laptops at my house only to feel like a fool when my wife looked over and asked if I took my meds.
Needless to say there was no bug on the HP side. I will have to test this out at school on a friends laptop.

Uh, dudes... that portion of the Defy screen responds to a magnet in the car cradle to activate the cardock app. Touch it with a magnet and you get the same thing.

Interesting finding. I just did a test with a USB cable (using the connector metal part) to see if the same part of the laptop that I previously reported is magnetic. Yes! it was magnetic indeed in particular at very bottom left corner of the lid close to the acer badge. Is that something to do with wireless reception wire?
Thank you for that. I can now be relaxed about it.

Also, if you reverse the polarity of the magnet you open a landscape "multi-media" station. Really a desk dock app.

Seen this? Dock for Universal.

Wonder how securely it will hold the phone? If it's solid it would make a good car holder by sticking it to the dash and just clipping the phone in when needed.
Here too: http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=126238&asource=119353
Expansys USA just shipped a couple of these to me. I should have it tomorrow (Tue)
Ditto.
this looks nice, but wish it showed more pictures. It is only 18.95 on expansys-usa. Please let us know how you like it!
A pretty simple cradle. It has a single USB port jack that accepts either a USB connection (which also charges the Universal) or the AC/DC jack. But doesn't replicate any of the other ports (for example, the headphone jack is covered up when in the cradle). It also has a notch to allow you to access the stylus if it is still in the unit while cradled. But it is still difficult to pull out. There is also a hole to balance your stylus in when not in use.
It has a single blue light on the front whose sole purpose appears to be to tell you if the cradle is plugged in. This light is on all the time and doesn't change (so far). The lights on the Universal itself still determine charge status.
The Universal lays flat in the cradle. However, you have to be careful when pushing it in. The height of the USB port on the Universal and the recepticle in the cradle are off by about half a millimeter. You kind of have to look at it and maneuver it while guiding the USB pieces together. You can't really just lay the cradle in and push.
It costs $19 US and, well, is worth about that. Useful to keep your Universal from flopping around your desk while connected (which, to be fair, is pretty useful considering how much the Universal costs), but not much more than that. Nothing fancy.
Mine arrived today. Deeper than I thought. fixed with 2 double sided tabs.
Any ideas how to hide the cable? It's a company car and I don't want to hack it about.
Is it really ok to drive about with the flip cover open? I suspect long term bumps from the road may damage it prematurely. Any thoughts?

I like it but it does need some sort of "spring" to absorb the bumbs. Looking at it, a piece of (stainless) steel bent like a "U" would help give it some spring - depending on the gauge, that is.

Touch screen stopped working

it just stopped working just like that...then i reflashed it n im stuck in the first screen where it says "tap to start" n i cant even tap now...anyone has any idea of how i can fix it at home...cuz its a lot of hassle to send it abroad...thank u
touch screen replacement
I had the same problem on my Universal and opened it to find out what happened.
I found the cable connecting the LCD and touch screen completely twisted.
Someone has played with it turning the screen in the same direction for many times without unscrewing it every time.
I manged to fix it partially soldering some wires that had gone loose.
Some wires were impossible to handle so I need a new wiring cable (it's a bunch of single ultra-tiny wires).
Now screen, mike and headpiece work again, but not the touch screen.
Do you have any idea if such a spare part can be found anywhere?
Possibly that would solve also your problem.
Who can have spare-parts?
Mario
Hmm....
Actually, not only the flex cable is originally twisted and looks funny out of the factory, you cannot turn the screen in the same direction more than it should be turned (e.g. from opened clamshell it only goes 180 degrees clockwise and cannot be turned anti-clockwise other than returning into its original position), it is stopped from turning by the way the hinge is designed. It is done specifically to prevent just the thing you described.
Generally even when some wires detach, the cable still performs fine, as the wires are not isolated and bunched together, as long as they do not detach from the connector itself. The fraying can happen when the flex cable is reinserted into the main case too roughly or one time too many, as the opening is fairly small and both cables need to be bent a certain way to fit through and pulled through in a particular sequence. Your problem could be caused by a faulty digitizer, it is connected to an LCD and if LCD performs fine, yet you lost sensitivity, the problem is not with your flex cable.
Cables can be purchased on Ebay. And so can digitizers (they are around $17-$20, but you need soldering to get them fitted to your LCD).

Xperia Play digitizer or flex cable problem?

Hi guys i have a problem
I can access different function through the MANUAL KEYS like settings, wireless , sound , display, and all the programs, but digitizer itself seems to be frozen. So i was wondering what is most common problem for that i presume flex cable or digitizer but digitizer is in good condition so what can it be ?
So cable 1 or 2?

Second one is analog touch cable.
To me digitizer doesnt work but analog works ?Which cable is that?
anyone?
whenever I slide out my gamepad my phone does not change the screen mode from portrait to landscape, neither does the xperia play launcher starts or the screen gets unlocked.
sometimes the screen automatically changes the screen mode from portrait to landscape as if the gamepad has been slid out when it isn't.
also games like PES 2012 don't detect the gamepad anymore used to work earlier.
what is the exact problem?
I asked a local mobile repair shop and he says strip of slider (flex cable) must be changed but it isn't available anywhere in my area. if this is correct then I may order the flex cable online.
what do you guys have to say?
To the OP:
My replacement glass+digitizer didn't have adhesive behind the connector like the original so every time the phone would take a hit the screen would go blank. I'd have to take it all apart and reseat the connector. Sometimes the cable that connects to it would twist out a little bit on its own during reassembly and I'd have to do it again. Not I use precisely cut tape or hot glue when I do one (careful of the slide rails). Though my problem usually manifested as a blank screen, twice it manifested as an unresponsive digitizer.
I'd check my connection first.

I responded to your PM. Yes, all the parts involved are available online. The slide board has two metal fingers inside a rail/slot that the bracket joining the two halves slides in. I don't know what the second one is for because all functions seem to react to the first one making or breaking a connection, but it could be causing the problem just as easily. These springy conductive fingers connect through the same flex cable as the switches that the face buttons press (Back, Home, Menu, Search) using some kind of conductive adhesive backing. That part is only a few bucks online, so it may be worth replacing just that to see. Unfortunately, the slider assembly is expensive (at least $20) but the slider + earpiece/camera + slide cable + switches is a comparative value at only a few bucks more.

Rust / stuff on the Desk dock connectors

So i recently bought the official HTC Desk Dock and while trying to use it, found out that my connectors were rusted. When you'd put the phone on the dock, it'd make crackling noises, at times won't go into dock mode, you'll have to move it around a bit to make it realise it's on a dock.
Aren't these supposed to be gold plated / rust proof ? I'm quite annoyed that such details were omitted. I tried cleaning it but it won't go away, comes back next day. Also looked under a microscope and it's all porous now. Anyone else had this issue ?

Xperia Ion Smart Dock. $10

After playing with the HD out on my Ion I decided to by one of the docks. To my suprise I found it on ATT for $10 :cyclops: So I thought I would share with the others. One thing to note is don't sign in to your account as it will show as not available. If you just order it it goes through and free shipping :good:

I just got done ordering it myself from at&t.
I had no issues with being logged in to my at&t account
I was coming to post the info also, but was ninja'd by @zachspeed.

Hai ninjerd you lol. For me as soon as I signed in it would not let me order for some reason. Also seems that this device is still being sold in some states and countries. I also noticed that Sony has more LT28a devices. Not sure why they are not at and just a.
Got mine a while back for $25, came with the HDMI cable. Best $25 bucks i've spent on an accesory for my phone.
Yea I knew Spectra was happy with his and thanks for your input as well. There is not allot of actual reviews of it online so I borrowed my friends hdmi adapter to play around with it. The tv launcher is quite neat and you can still use the other launchers too. It is almost like a second computer. Cant wait for my dock to show up.
Does the AT&T version come with an hdmi cable? One of the reviews I've read said it didn't. Is it a full size hdmi on the back of the unit or mini?
I will let you know when it shows up. It looks like it has a mini on the back of it from pics. I hope it does come with a cable or some kind of adapter made for it. Still have one if it does not though so guess I am okay.
Just got mine in the mail from at&t.
It is new in box.
Box contains ONLY the dock and paper work.
NO CORDS OR ANYTHING ELSE
Not real happy that just putting the phone in the dock does NOT trigger the landscape home screen.
When docked the lock screen and home launcher screen are still vertical, they have no rotation.
Most apps will rotate automatically.
Let me say that I only had a charger plugged in, no hdmi cable to test.
Must need the hdmi connection to trigger full rotation like shown in Sony web page.
I do like the cursor when a usb mouse is used.
As I got it to mainly hold my ION up so I can see the clock at night, when I use it as an alarm. Also like how when in clock mode a long press of screen turns the clock blue then a short press dims it.

Yea I got mine today and same deal with no cords. I also find it quite difficult to get my phone in the dock like the plugs are a bit off or something. The rotation will trigger with the hdmi plugged in and you can set Smart Connect to trigger TV launcher when you dock it. I will say it does work quite well and had no issue with my mouse and keyboard. Some apps are a bit strange like youtube the seek bar will not come back on the tv once it has hidden itself so you have to look at the device. All in all I am very happy with it.
The one complaint I have is the lack of cords. I went looking for a micro hdmi cable today but I was not willing to pay 30 to 50 dollars for a cable. That is just crazy for four to six foot cable. The bad part about it is every big brand store will offer you a ton of options online for crazy cheap but not in store. The only place I did not check was Staples so guess I will go there tomorrow. I tell you it is almost like the brick stores have become the dumping ground for stuff that does not sell.
Oh forgot to add that I did notice that if you turn the screen off before you take it out the sound is not forced through the ear piece. : )
I went ahead and got one of these even though I don't see a use for it because, hey, ten bucks
It's picky about power sources. I had been using the charging brick from a wireless mouse, which charges the Ion fast enough, but run through the dock the phone didn't even register as plugged in and couldn't power a USB thumb drive. Likewise when plugged into my PC through the dock--no response on either end. My tablet charger worked, but I use that for my tablet, so I ended up digging out the original brick for the Ion.
As expected, the dock is too tight a fit for a case, which is probably enough by itself to disqualify this thing from daily use for me. It's no easier to dock the phone vs. plugging it straight into a cord, either--I would say it's about equally awkward dealing w/ the cover flap and tight ports either way. If you don't use a case and/or really want a bedside clock, it might be worthwhile, or if you want to use your phone as a word processor, gaming console, or main computer. For me, it might come in handy down the line but is probably going in a drawer for now.

I use mine as an alarm clock/charger.
It sits next to the bed and I was knocking it of my table when the alarm goes off. So the dock is more stable and holds the phone in an easy to read angle.
I still HATE that the lock & home screens won't Auto rotate when docked. I have found an app that forces landscape mode but not automatically. Why Sony didn't enable it with a setting is crazy
I also use a case daily. Its a jelly type case so goes off & on quickly.

It's growing on me. I left the phone in there while I was working (or, you know, stuff) at my desk today, and it was nice to have my notifications right in front of me. I think I also found a less fussy method of getting it on the dock--going straight in with the screen facing down at an angle and kind of flipping it up onto the plugs. It's hard to explain, but at least just now it slid right on there, which is easier than fiddling with a cord.
In the spirit of overkill, I even pulled an ancient KVM switch out of my "electronic junk" box, to share my mouse and keyboard between the dock and my PC. It doesn't seem to be working for my Razer mouse, but the keyboard is a go, and I might be able to troubleshoot the mouse.
Yea the auto rotate issues have annoyed me from day one with this thing. Have not had to deal with it though with using other launchers like Honami and such. The lockscreen still bugs me though.
