[Q] Possible to run Windows Mobile on Android? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've noticed a lot of people have asked about running android on windows mobile, but I can't seem to find any information on the opposite. Preferrably I just want to run an emulator, but understand if that's not feasible.
I know the big question here will be "Why would you ever want to do that?!" and my answer is simple. X-Com. I want to play X-Com on my phone and the only portable version I can find is this one
http: pocket-ufo.en.softonic.com/pocketpc
(Sorry about breaking rules and posting a link as a new member, but this obviously isn't me trying to get people to look at a dodgy porn site or anything, just showing the program I'm trying to get to work)
As such I'm wanting to do what I have to so that I can spend my time re-living my childhood while on public transport.
Thanks in advance for any answers guys.

Hi, you may very well even get flamed for posting this question .
It has been explained many times that this is not likely to happen, for reasons like windows not being open source and having no license to run it on a device that is not designed for WinMo.
The reason that you find android running on WinMo devices is that android is open source and free.

Thanks mate, I appreciate the reply. I'd figured as much from other posts, but was kinda hoping there'd be a way to port games from one to the other. Not knowing anything about this kind of thing, I've got no idea if that's possible.

Could be possible to 'port' a game over if it were open source...and you found someone willing to do it ofcourse. Why not ask the devs of the game if they intend to make an android version.

Noob Question

Idk if this is the right section, but my question is, I have the t-mobile tp2 and I was wondering if all the tweaks and other things on this site will work with my version of it. Also how to get cracked programs and games? I know on the Iphone you jailbrake it also how do I get the clock like everyone else has and the backgrounds?

Dude,
In answer to your question, yes the tweaks will work with your phone. What you need to do it spend some serious time reading. There is a lot on this site and it should take you a while just reading before you ever actually do anything. Unfortunately for you, most people will not tell you how to do it, you need to read up on it for yourself so that you learn how it is done. There is a seriously big difference between someone just showing you how to do it and you researching it on your own. To be honest, that is the best way to do it since you will also learn a lot more about what can be done just through reading the threads. Good luck, and happy reading.
Speed...
I've already read about 40 pages of things to do with the phone, if I was some hardcore enthusiast then yeah I would go that route, but unlike others I just want my phone to look nice and perform well and have stuff others dont have.
Welcome to forums,
Then just read this one:

Good luck and enjoy!

Running Windows Mobile on htc desire?? Possible??

i am getting my self a htc desire but i have been a user of windows mobile software's for ever and i love it.
would i be able to still use some of the software's that i have on hand??
I would appriciate if you could email me your replies on this subject to
[email protected]
Thank you in advance
From what Ive seen on here from when other people have posted this question hes gonna get a lot of hate emails lol.
LOL, what a redicilous question!! Android FTW!
i'd wager it's possible if you can find a few dedicated people to support your cause.
Oh, and btw, bwahahahahahahahahahaha
And that's coming from someone who's had 4 WinMo devices in a row before a desire.
Since the specs are similar It might not be that difficult for people to get together etc..
But, If you can, try the desire and the HD2 and see which you prefer. After owning winmo before, and coming within inches of owning a HD2 and then trying a desire - linux is so much better at the user experience. The fluidity, ease of use and speed at which things are accessed is far better than the winmo 6.1 and 6.5 I have used before. The OS is very intuitive. I bet you could give this phone to a 6 yr old and they would within a short time frame be using this better than the general user. I might try this.
I'm just very happy that the phone doesnt stress me out trying to use it like winmo did. writing txts and swapping between functions is quick. Very cool.
It's not "Is it possible?" it's "Why bother?"
I hate "flame" conversation. But WHY bother? If you want snapdragon with WM then HD2 is your device. I have 10years of history with windows mobile devices from Cassiopeia A-11 with Windows CE, thru WM2003, 05, 06 and 6.5. And I can say after month with HTC Desire, every possible app is already for android and it runs faster and looks better. Except professional apps used in parcel delivery and stock monitoring (only question of time).
Don´t worry you´ll do just fine.

A six year old might be fine, the missus still struggles...
I, myself, am a fully fledged Android convert. Previously, my favourite devices were all WinMobile (Never liked Symbian much). I took a leap of faith and got my Desire on a bit of a whim (and a LOT of research) and I can honestly say I love Android to bits, it's easily the best Phone/Phone OS I've ever used so I'm on everyone in this forum's side when it comes to Android vs. WinMobile.
But I still have to say, I see nothing wrong with what the OP is asking. If someone released a port of Windows Mobile 6.5 or 7 for the Desire, I'd probably try it out myself, even for just a giggle. I know I'd go back to android probably within a few hours, but that's not the point, it's fun to play with stuff like that.
The fact that the guy has picked the Desire over the likes of the HD2 tells me that he's made his choice with Android and just wants to keep his options open - and what's wrong with that? This is exactly the kind of thing that XDA dev was designed for. Hell, my dream would be to have an OS choice at bootup, imagine being able to pick between your favourite custom ROMs, a stock ROM and even a WinMo ROM? That would be pretty epic and I don't think anyone would complain that it was a "Waste of time". So go easy on the guy, it's not all that stupid a question.

It is a stupid question when it gets asked week in week out.
A simple search would've revealed this - I just searched "Windows Mobile" and found 5 threads asking the same question.
Regards,
Dave
Which just means there's a fair amount of interest in it, making it even less of a stupid question. Rather than flame the guy, just ask him nicely to use search in future and point him to one of the threads.
Personally, I don't think the ignorance of the search bar is any worse than those who flame people for asking "stupid questions".

Why bother buying a Desire and ask for a WinMo porting? just buy an HD Mini or an HD2.

I wouldn't say flaming, just wasn't terribly polite. Sure, the guy could have and should have used the search engine ,that's fair enough, but all the "Lols, why bother, android is teh win, winmo is teh suck!" style comments weren't helpful, informative or necessary at all.
I'm sorry, but if you don't believe this is a stupid question I would strongly question your intelligence. Is there some problem picking up a Windows Mobile? Are they rare enough that such a strange request would come up again and again? It's silly because for those that WANT a WM phone, one is easily acquired. It's like asking if there's a way to turn my XBOX into a PS3 because I don't like XBOX games...then I'm a fool for buying one! Just because there are a lot of silly people does not render their silliness valid.

See, this is exactly my point. Here's a reply that, within the first line, attempts to insult. Why do that? It doesn't help and all you'll do is drag out this thread much more than it needs to be. Does this "stupid question" bother you that much? Then don't reply! Ignore it and it'll go away.
Anyway, upon further inspection, it's actually not that stupid inquestion. Despite the knee-jerk reaction we all got from the title, if you read his post carefully, he's actually asking if there's any way he can run some of his windows mobile programs on the Desire. Not the full OS, just some of the programs. Sure, this is obviously a big "no", but is it really that stupid a question? We have emulators for plenty of other devices and anyone not that familliar with Android might not know that it's a completely different OS, or that it's completely incompatible. He's clearly a newbie, so go easy.
All I'm really saying is, if this kind of thing bothers you, drop the attitude and juse ignore it.

Maybe it's because the Desire has more RAM that the HD2 and HD Mini, why can't someone just port winmo on a desire and shut people up thats asking for it too be ported..... surely its not that hard to port it over.....
"Maybe its just to hard for XDA Developers or anonymous developers on this forum to port it over.... ah well soo much for theres skills....
It serisouly serisouly can't be that hard.... if Android can be ported on a winmo mobile, why is it soo hard to port winmo on a Android phone thats 100% capable of running the O/S.
Please will someone just port it over to the Desire soo there will not be any more future threads of if it can be ported over.....
Maybe some people don't like Android and prefer winmo O/S because of there purchased apps maybe.
Please don't go mocking me saying "omg why would anyone wan't to do that.... Android is the best because its open source etc....

You should at least describe what kind of app is that
If I were to say openly then it would give someone else the opportunity to make the same app and the Dev (if there is one) who would agree to make it wcould lose out even if only on the credit for making it.
Im guessing in order to get help you can't automatically presume that most developers are d*cks who steal ideas from other people.
Now you are putting words into my mouth. Not really helpful that. Though the vast majority are not there is always a small number who plagiarise as is seen in the market. Now may I thank you for your comments as I await an answer.
I'm guessing you wont pay them either? I think developers might be reluctant if they feel that after hearing it, they might get in trouble for deciding they wont go ahead (I've been in that situation before)
As a developer... what? I have no idea what you're on about.
If you want a developer you need to:
1. Make available information about what you want developed.
2. Pay someone (a reasonable sum), or have a genuinely interesting project. The later being substantially less likely than the former.
Yeah...even if I pm'd you for information, and then decided I can't proceed on developing it... isn't it the same? I would have heard your idea anyway, so you're better off saying it directly. ;-)
Or... you could apply for a patent on it if you fear there are lots of thieves here lmao

OK thanks for all the replies I will put my idea to a Dev forum that welcomes them.
Guys, please try and keep this on-topic without resorting to flaming the moment I close this tab.
@OP, XDA is all about sharing and working together to achieve common goals. As a result, developers here tend to work best when others can get involved. This kind of post pops up now and then, but these ideas usually end up unfulfilled due to the lack of information available.
And remember this is people's hobby, not necessarily their job, so most people aren't about to commit to making an app when they have no idea what it is. If it's not interesting to them, they likely won't want to do it.
awww sulky wulky. Hey any devs wanna build an app for me? I'm selling it but won't pay for it, and have no way of supporting it further down the line? No? Didn't think so. Flan.

How would you know if the developer that you share the idea will not simply use it for his own profit?
This is xda-developers (a developer community) and I never heard about a case of stolen ideas here.
If you'd like to find some help implementing an idea, you should at least describe the developer profile, technologies,...
i.e. I'm looking for a developer to build a simple 2D game that connects to a website to load pictures using http protocol.... No previous experience required, All source code should be sent to me and I'll share the profits.... please PM me for details.
You can try rent-a-coder and, for a fee you have your idea implemented.
Your arrogance is not welcome here pal.
Good luck with your idea.
I make a post offering to give someone my idea for an app that if they can make they can do what they like with and I get flamed for it. I am not a Dev, I am very new to Android OS. I see a need and think someone may find it easy to meet that need so try to make it known so an individual may even if the want profit from it. And for this I get called arrogant and told I am not welcome.
And as for the trolling I will not comment.

good luck, you won't find any! you come here asking for someone willing to do some stuff for you you won't tell them about before they agree to do it? lol! why should ANYONE agree to that. i, for one, am not interested on this conditions. also, this here (xda & android) is about community development, open source and therefore open ideas where everyone can profit.
if you wan't to sell the app then hire some dev for 20$/h but then you are indeed @ the wrong place here. otherwise just tell everyone about your idea and IF it's interesting, some people might pick it up...
Go and ask an iPhone dev if you wanna behave like that...not because youd fit in being a wanker but because they're much more commercially minded. It's funny in your original post you kinda imply most people working in this section and putting out material are not 'proper devs'. This is xda and this is open...people suggest apps all the time and people make it for free and maybe include ads or small charge to cover there costs, see lag fix, noled and galaxy s sim unlocker on market. You can be like the idea makers from there and just go 'that covers my needs and it's cool' or you can merrily skip along to an iPhone dev who is all profit.

So let's make it clear: you are offering the dev the idea and if he realizes it, all profits would go to him? He will publish it and everything? So why don't tell it straight away, if it's interesting someone will do it. Even if 2 or 3 people do it, there will be 2 or 3 apps for the same purpose. So what? How many im clients or gps navigation software are on the market, and still coming out? Do you think only one of them is getting money and the others don't? Users also like to have choice...
However you should at least tell what kind of skills are required? 2/3d gaming? Databases? Web connection? Kernel hacking? I think even if you aren't a developer yourself it shouldn't be difficult answering these questions... at least you are selecting potential candidates... that would be the minimum requisite for posting such requests, how can I know if I could do it if I don't even know what skills are required? Not all developers have the same background you know...

Why you get short/one word answers! (The Long Answer)

I wrote this to explain to the new users why they might get what they consider short or bad answers... when really they aren't!
First off, this is meant to be a basic guide for basic understanding, there may be things that are slightly wrong or not completely accurate (to some experts) but this is for BASIC UNDERSTANDING and not meant to bash or flame any ideas, beliefs or operating systems. If anyone wants any more information they will know how to find it.

Why you get short/one word answers!
A lot of users here are sometimes confused, disgruntled or scared off by confusing short -sometimes one word- answers.
I thought i would take some time to explain. And it will take time. For the short story go down to the bottom. Sit back and get ready to understand why you feel you aren't understanding something........

The Long Answer
This is also a common problem with new users in linux forums. This is no co-incidence! It is not that the more knowlegable members are ignorant, short, or rude. They just speak in quick short answers to help you (help yourself).
Why you get short or one word answers!
Let me start on Linux. I personally am not a user, but i have researched it. It is not for me personally, it does not have the features I need or support some of my fancy hardware. Dont get me wrong, Linux is a Great alternative for many users, beginner or advanced. I would consider installing Ubuntu (built on Linux) for my friends parents or grandparents! And anyone else that likes the way iOS is built but doesn't want Apple. But Linux is LOVED by programmers! Why ? Because its Open Source software.
What is Open Source?
Open source software is written "un-compiled" meaning anyone can "open" up the program, read it, learn how it works, or edit it***
How can you legally edit someones program and use it yourself?
GPL General Public License - the linux kernel and many other things are licenced under this.
Basically it is the opposite of copyright, meaning everything under the licence is free, and can and must be able to be read, edit and be re-used to what ever means the other party wants, as long as what they do is under the GPL as well. So any program that works with GPL software, uses code or ideas from GPL software (no matter how small), shares programming libraries with, ect.... MUST BE FREE and OPEN SOURCE. This can be messy for people that want to make money off certain ideas and software.. But,... its all in the name of freedom. Lets just leave it there.
What does any of this have to do with Android?
Android is built on a Linux derived kernel, most of the code for the famous android kernel came for linux! so.... GPL.... so... Open Source!
**This is why android app developers ask you to "donate to" not "buy" their app.** Its a Google Android / GPL thing.
So why do programmers like Linux and or Open Source?
They like it because they are constantly learning and curious! With Linux or any program/software that runs on/with/for Linux they can learn how it works! Better yet, if they want their program to do that, all they have to do is copy and paste it from where they saw it first, then edit it to their own means.
How programmers think:
Im curious about "X"....
Im going to search for "X" where i think im going to find it
I found it! I like it,
Hmm what is this in here? What is "Y"??
Im going to search for "Y"
NO!?! I ll ask a buddy programmer....
He told me "Z" just... "Z"
Im going to search for "Z"
OH!! that makes sense!!!!
Im going to use that!
See a common trend? Search, learn, search, ask, search, learn, search, ask , search.
Click to collapse
In programming this leads to the thinking, "Why type something again if its already been typed? - I can copy and paste!!!"
Similarly:
In forums and helping others it leads to thinking "Why type something that has already been typed? - If you search "X", you find something that has already been typed and i dont have to copy and paste it or find it for you!!!. " Search this word.....
On top of that, programming code uses many "short forms", "broken words" and "gibberish" that makes a lot of sense when you know what it means. This results in thinking in short terms that mean a lot (to them)!
Closing
As said above its not out of being rude or elitist, its a way of thinking.
-That way of thinking is a part of programming, and leaning anything in that world, you have to learn the way of thinking. >
-Part of the learning to think that way is getting fed up and saying "Im just going to find out myself!!" >
-Then, by the time you learn how to find anything you want to know on your own, you have an epiphany and realize they were telling you "exactly what you needed to hear". They were the Oracle and you are Neo. The Matrix has you, and it was all about the journey!

The short answer as promised!
If they give you one word > search that word. the information is out there already probably many times over!
Why re-write it again for you?
Start with searching the website you are at. (might want to add a second word to help narrow searches EG. for xda would be your device name or OS)

originally posted by kyphur:
I think what a lot of people forget is that this is not a "make my phone neat & kewl" place.
As implied by the name this is technically a Developers forum/community.
Now what does that mean? Well first off it means that there is an expectation that if you are here then you want to customize your device but rather than just installing something that someone packaged you want to understand how it works and maybe even enhance it yourself.
When I first came here with a Blue Angel it was a different environment. PDA Phones were not embraced by the general public because of the expense and complexity (I paid over $400 for my BA). A $400 phone 4 years ago was expensive, today the Tilt is $300 after rebates but with inflation & the rise in the cost of other devices and the fact that there are other sources out there giving them away for $150 our neat bit of kit has become popular with mainstream users.
Now we have a flood of new users who are asking not "How can I do this myself?" but more like "Give me the quick fix" without caring to understand the process. See if you read the threads then you get to experience the learning process, you see how the issues were investigated and confirmed. Then you get to watch the different attempts at resolution and learn why some failed while others worked. That is called Development.
The NooB backlash is coming from users who have walked in the development shoes and is directed mainly at those who don't care for the journey but just want the end result or destination.
As a Development Forum we are just as much (if not more) about the journey. I've read so many comments like "I don't have time to read all of the threads" or "I don't care how it works, just that it does". These very statements are contrary to the heart & soul of XDA-Devs and that is why the backlash is so strong.
Let me be very clear on this: IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT UNDERSTANDING THE JOURNEY THEN YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
XDA-Devs is about developers & hackers helping each other and working together to get the most out of our devices by understanding them better than most.
XDA-Devs is not about helping everyone who wants a "Kewl bit of kit" make their phone better than the guy next to him.
Now do we go kicking users off who never contribute anything, NO. We tolerate it to an extent. Where the toleration ends is when these users start diluting the usefulness of the forum by repeating the same questions over and over again.
You ask us to understand your position. Well if you want to benefit from our experience and time then I think it is only fair that you understand our position.

Great post to help a new user. The info on searching when you get a one word answer is great advice.
Nice write up! Missed this one somehow but your spot on, especially when it comes to the use of the search button.
Added a link to my sig too and spanked your thanks button.

Android Development

Guys, Most of my questions are getting ignored. I am hoping it's because no one has an answer and not just because those that have answers choose to not answer my question for whatever reason. Although a couple questions should be easy answers for people. Just not easy for me. LOL
In any event, I want to Develop for the Galaxy S6 EDGE. I am wondering how I set up an EDGE emulator in Android Studio.
If I can't, is there a better Program to develop with that does have an S6 EDGE emulator?
Once I get that question answered, I would like to know if I can make a copy of my stock ROM, and port it in to whatever tool I will be using to develop with.
Answers to these questions (Even if it's a Google Link and you telling me to go here and read, so long as the page I land on does indeed answer the questions) would be GREATLY appreciated. More appreciated than just people who come in, Look, and then go out.
Thanks All!!
Judging from your post count I can see that your just getting started here, now if you take time to read all the threads concerning the S6 & S6EDGE you can see that the development here is at a snails pace.
The main reason is that this phone is a whole different creature as compared to all other android phones before it, and anything that worked before doesn't work the same way now when it comes to developing on this platform ( 64 bit as compared to 32 bit operating systems ) as it did in the past.
The programs you refer to may not even be updated as of yet to work with the new operating system let alone the Samsung security that's been implemented on the S6e that can brick your phone with FRP turning your phone into an expensive paperweight.
This android is a whole new recipe with a lack of ingredients that devs are having trouble finding.
Don't think your been ignored, it's just that not to much is going on here and it may be a while before new technology comes along that can make development what it used to be.

Thanks for the response Pancho, I realize this is a whole different beast to work with. I was posting my questions because I do see some development going on so I was hoping the Devs responsible for what has been done, would step up and answer my questions.
That being said tho, 1 question does remain that should be answerable (and that I've asked but was never responded to), can A Rom posted here, be downloaded to a computer and then imported into Android Studio (Or another Android Dev Program). If it's able to be imported into Android Studio, I should then be able to fire up an emulator with that rom loaded and work on it.
Make no mistake tho, I do NOT plan on KANGING anything. I have 2 reasons for why I want to know this information.
1. Because I'd like to see what a rom looks like in action before I put it on my phone (I don't like flashing and reflashing and reflashing ect...)
2. I can see how another developer did what did and as such learn from it. I learn by deconstructing so to speak.
I would research Android Studio and find there forum or website and go from there, I never heard of it and don't know if the "one" developer here even uses it, but the only input your going to get is from someone who uses the program.
Try YouTube, maybe someone's posted a video or tutorial on how to use this or similar programs.
Also if you go to the "Android Development & Hacking" section in the main forum you may find what your looking for.
Google is your friend. :sly:
