Check out the chef central forum on this site. There is a kitchen that can be useful for modifying existing roms. Also, there is a topic titled "some advice" by cyanogen. That has some links that will help you get started. You should look into running some flavor of Linux (i prefer ubuntu, but you aren't limited to that distro). What is your experience so far?
sent from my Droid incredible using the xda app

I have no experience with any Linux distribution. Years back I always wanted to get into it just never did.. I'm good with taking pre existing code and learning it and adding to it.. I know I'd be going with a sense based rom, and try to add some functions from other existin told..
I will have to check out the chef forum here. I've never clicked over to it , bit it definitely sounds like it will ne helpful.. much thanks..

*ROM (comes in zip form)
*APKTool: Follow the video below to get that downloaded and setup on linux
The 4 basic things you will need, you can search the forums here for the Kitchen. Like previously stated you can use Ubuntu or Linux Mint which is based off Ubuntu.
A forum Member named Heyitslou made a tutorial on how to use the APKTool also: http://blip.tv/file/4382608.
The kitchen is pretty straight forward on what you can do with it...just follow the thread on how to set it up.
Remember be patient while you are making your ROM (some trial and error, best to work on a phone you dont rely on for important calls)...I have made my first ROM this weekend...I swear I had to cook it 50 times to get it working properly with what i wanted to change and add...so 50 ROM flashes=alot of time you wont be able to get calls... just a heads up. I am pretty sure next time I edit in some changes it will be faster and easier...The Kitchen is a great tool and does what you want..just got to know what not to do in the kitchen...it could be messy.

im going to look into the Cygwin method as dsixda stated in the kitchen thread.. im anxious to getting to ripping out parts of roms and merging if possible..

so ima switch to the virtualbox/ubuntu method for this.. i think it will be easier for me to solve issues with community support this way..

I recommend just going ahead and installing the OS directly, but that's just what I would do.
sent from my Droid incredible using the xda app

maybe at some point in the future if my brain becomes that curious to the OS itself.. for now this method will do..
so i downloaded the java6 bin and jre, trying to install it via terminal i'm getting nowhere..
dpkg-i command not found

java installed
kitchen installed
now to go rip apart my laundry tub plumbing and replace it..
whats the nitty gritty on getting behind the scenes on a previously compiled ROM??

[Q] Help Please Ported New Rom and lost

I just ported the Sensation Rom, using the dsixda kitchen. Everything seemed to be going fine until I flashed ROM and is giving me, "Can't open....... (bad)". thru the FAQ on the kitchen post it was stated I need to change the recovery menu, (I'm a flashaholic.. not a dev yet ) so how do I change the RM.....
Please help I would like to post this alpha tonight
*****if anyone wants the link******
it's the new sense 3.6 ics 4.0 Rom All help welcome
Now I'm probably totally wrong....
But looks to me like either a bad download or that things aren't signed properly.
I guess we'll both wait till someone more knowledgeable comes along

No, don't post in the Development forum, as this isn't Development (yet) - it's still a question.
I'll download your file and see what's going on.
EDIT: Well first off, the ROM is WAYYYYY too big. Did you remove anything from it? Did you set up any symlinks to the Data partition to make up for the space the EVO lacks on /system? How exactly did you port it? Did you only use the tools in the kitchen? Not only won't that give you a complete working (or booting, even) port, but you'll end up having duplicate files, for multiple devices. What kernel are you using? There isn't an ICS Sense kernel for the EVO, so I'm curious to know how you were able to mod the existing GB Sense kernel code (or maybe the modified ICS AOSP code?) to get it working.
EDIT 2: I see you're using the build.prop from the Sensation, which will cause problems. Also, the Sensation is a qHD device - did you resize anything for our WVGA screen? You're better off starting with trying to port the new Primo leak, but even then, you'll never get it to boot without an ICS Sense kernel.

Holy Shyznit batman!!!!!! ok i'm still learning Just wayy to eager to help out .... Capt.
I used the tools in the kitchen, this would've /is the alpha - all resizing and tweaks would have been done from alpha 1.0 (this 1) through the final.
Is there another kitchen I could use that will make this easier on the kid....lol

No. If you're just starting out porting, it's best to start with something that actually has a chance at working, so that you can understand how everything works and what everything does. Technically, you don't even need the kitchen to port a ROM - it makes it about as easy as it can, while recognizing that it's an experimental feature with limitations.
There's a thread about porting different versions of Sense that should help you with the files that you actually need to move, and the content in the (now closed) kitchen thread should help out if you have any issues (sd card won't mount, sound doesn't work, etc.).
I recommend you first try to port something close to the EVO, like a Shift ROM. Try to get Sense 2.1 working on the latest OTA. I bet that'll take a whole lot of work, if you can do it at all (different versions of GB). If you do, you'll definitely have some skills/tools that can help you in your quest for ICS Sense.

Take it from someone who had cooked and posted literally hundreds of rums for multiple devices, and don't post anything until you've built at least 20 different (semi-)working roms for yourself first. You are opening the door to major criticisms (*****ing) and a lot of support work (which you may not be ready for) if you make your work public too prematurely.

One major problem is there's not a fully functional kernel to boot ICSense soooo that's the first issue here, next would be if the dpi and images haven't been resized to match the evo's resolution there will be major visual flaws and possible won't boot, if you really want to start porting roms I'd suggest starting with a GB rom since they are stable and there's alot more info and tools out there to get it ported

[Q] where to find maguro aokp compile tutorial

title says it all,
i want to compile my first rom, and i want to use aokp as the base,
i love its features, i love how snappy it feels with the right kernel and setup
and overall i just want to compile my own customized rom, if it turns out ok then i may release it for the rest of you guys
but ive looked and all i found was a tut on compiling aokp for toro not maguro
so just curious as to where to start
helpful pointers only please
Well wouldn't using the tutorial for toro work for maguro but just use maguro files?
bow chicka wow wow.
There is a sticky in this forum, and yeah, what @rbiter said.
understood, but i dont see clearly how to use maguro files on the toro tutorial,
just looking for some simple answers and something easy to use
maybe im blind :S lol
also, im new entirely to compiling and custom rom cooking and all that fun stuff,
so hence why i had asked how to use maguro files while compiling..
i know its prolly been answered before, and yes im sure there is something out there...
but for me i cannot seem to find a maguro specific tutorial for AOKP
and i really want to make my own rom, but am so confused with all the compiling stuff, and ive never really learned linux, i know basic commands, i know how to follow tut's, but other then that, im lost
thanks again for any help
It is hard finding good tutorials for a lot of stuff. That said, you need to find a few good tutorials of varying things. And you need to be able to figure out "if I can do this with this file can I do it with this file?". And you need to be a man about it. Seriously. You learn more from mistakes and not being able to do what you want rather than a hold me by the hand video or toolkit. And lots and lots of reading and searching. And finding some friendly devs who aren't too busy helps too. If any of these aren't in your game plan you should probably not do this. We don't need another I bricked my phone trying a toro compile on my maguro phone. :banghead:
bow chicka wow wow.
well im not that much of a newb.. but i am to compiling source code stuff...
im used to the days of HTC rom cooking, so simple to just use a kitchen to make the rom, but android sparked a fire in me and now i want to try my hand at a custom rom, the ONLY thing im worried about is bricking the phone,
but as ive seen around on diff forums is that its not impossible to brick, but u HAD to have done something wrong to hard brick the device, and as far as i know, if i follow steps accordingly then i cannot possibly brick the device unless i fudge with things im not suppose to...
but i just basically want a rom, made by me, with all my customizations and settings as a default daily driver...
cuz with all the rom versions and release's coming out, im getting annoyed with having to redo all my settings and launcher setups and stuff...
basically all i want really, is a base rom, that i can update as new versions release, so i dont have to "wipe" the device all the time, just add a new update and go...
Also do you have a Linux or virtual box setup already? Do you have android sdk loaded up? Eclipse? Played with android emulator? Have you tinkered with some little stuff like kernels? Does your computer have enough oomph to compile a rom in a reasonable amount of time? Without overheating? Do you know where and how to pull and look at files? Fastboot commands? Adb commands? And drum roll... do you have extra underwear if you brick your $500 phone? :what:
bow chicka wow wow.
i have ubuntu 11.10 and ubuntu 10.04 setup on my laptop, and i have android sdk and gnex toolkit and various other tools installed on my win7x64 desktop, i also have dabbled in adb and fastboot commands, i have messed with build.prop editing for basic stuff, im a bit familiar with dos commands and linux command line.. i do know how to use adb for push and pull of files, i have a full motodev /w eclipse linux VM on my win desktop, it has everything needed for android dev, but i think its possibly only for moto devices :S not to sure tho
and my pc, i think it has enough balls.. Acer Aspire 8943G 18.4" laptop, core i5-430m 2.26ghz quad core, 8gb ddr-3 ram, 640gb hdd for win7x64, 160gb hdd for ubuntu 11.10/10.04
Got ram?
bow chicka wow wow.

[CM9] Building from source

Hey Everyone,
This is my first post here on XDA. I've been around for a while and always try to read a lot before attempting anything so as not to break stuff; hence the reason for no posts so far. I appreciate all of the helpful information I find on these forums and it has been great for keeping my trusty Dinc running well and running the latest Android OS.
I have been busy with school, but finally have some time to sit down and bang out some Android development, leading me to my
Question/problem: I am attempting to build android from source to get up and running on being able to create my own ROMs or help contribute to others and I've run into a problem. I'm stuck in a boot-loop during the CM9 boot animation. I have a logcat dump during the boot that shows the errors and the cycle of it trying again and again, but I'm not sure where to go next.
Background:
I have been running drk.hd's CM9 ROM for the last month or so (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1558923) and I have enjoyed it. It works very well. He has build instructions posted on his github here: https://github.com/drkhd/android_device_htc_inc. I have followed those steps exactly as posted, which all work as expected. I have not run into any build/compile errors, but after flashing the zip file, I end up in the boot-loop.
Logcat:
I pasted the logcat here: http://pastebin.com/wVVbmeRY
The last ~400 lines just repeat until killing the logcat. I can see errors about media services dying and a fatal signal 11, but again, I'm not sure what to do with this information.
Any help is much appreciated. I know this should really be in the dev forum, but as I mentioned, this is my first post; I don't have 10 posts yet, so I cannot post in the dev forum until that point. I am really just starting to dig into this stuff, so go easy on me and help guide me in the right direction so I can take things and run with them. Once I get a feel for how best to approach android development, I should be able to pick it up pretty easily.
Thanks
I know this thread should really be in the dev forum, but if any of you have any suggestions or can at least point me in the right direction for where to look for answers, that would be great.
Thanks again

This is the right forum. Development threads are meant to be for ROM and other development support, Q&A is where I would ask about this too but I guess the other devs either aren't around or don't know how to answer your question. cmlusco is a dev of touch of blue and he lingers around Q&A a lot so maybe if he comes across this he can give you some insight. I would really like to get into building ROMs as well but I don't have any experience in coding just yet. I don't really know what kind of experience is required to build ROMs either and my only Ubuntu machine is 32-bit so I am essentially out of the race for now. That being said, I found this guide that I was going to use for my own building ventures until I realized I needed a 64-bit machine but maybe it can help you or maybe the support can give you a little direction. I hope this helps!!

I would love to help but i have no clue how to build from source. All i know how to do is take stock roms and modify and tweak them. I do not have a linux setup, i use win 7 with cygwin and android kitchen. Android kitchen does a lot of the work for you. Apktool is another great windows program for decompiling and recompiling apks. It just takes time to tweak and modify everything. Google and xda are your best friends, you can find the answer to just about anything you want.

Some help in Dev a Rom

Hi, guys,I want to port a Pac-man rom to our glides, but, my internet is only 512, my pc is very good for the work, but my internet no. 1 Night and only 800 mb. (and i think that there was a error and cut the connection)
My question is. Can I download all the repo (Pac-man gith andour device tree) in another pc using windows, and use that file in my linux OS? I can go to download in another place, but only with windows. If the answer is Yes, where can I learn how to do that?

I don't see why not, unless your repo is OS specific...
I would set up a virtual linux machine and use that to do everything, as it will cause less hiccups. Easier to build on there, or so I'm told...
EDIT: Do you want to work together? I'm trying to port as well. Just a basic port, using this guide:

Wow, your guide seems very easy, and there is an app to do it too.
I will try to see if i can install linux in one of these machines to download all.
I dont know any about porting, or fixing things in android, I want to learn and I am using Dman's Tutorial, so, not sure if I can help doing a real rom

i want to do a pacrom as well.. ive been really busy the last 2 weeks though so havent had a chance to fix my ubuntu install... my build environment is almost done, just gave me errors.. well need to setup a repo on github... for now though its not a bad idea to be patient and allow everyone to focus on fixing the cm that spyke is working on.. thats one thing i wonder about the greatergood .. if he focused on one fully working vs many broken if we'd have a bluetooth fix...
Yes, but in that time, I will learn, I see minor errors when sync the repo, but continue (sometimes the conection broke it but can restart) I first want to learn
Sent from my SGH-I927 using xda app-developers app
ya cool I'm with you ... When I have some free time next I will fix my devel. Let's work on this together im sure we can help eachother out quite a bit and put together an updated how-to compile from source for 4.2.2.
I don't see any reason why you can't download all of the items you need under windows. The only thing you'd need to be concerned when copying it back is file permissions ... shouldn't be an issue, though.
Question, though, what makes you believe it would be faster downloading in windows vs linux ? is your windows computer a laptop that you'll be taking somewhere else to download? ...
Yes, I will go to another place to download all. If I dont do that, I never going to finish

i think cm10.1 is the one to do unless i'm getting my versions mixed up,
cm10.2 is android 4.3 and that had problems.
cm10.1 is android 4.2 and should be an easy match i think.
wanting the latest version of whatever is not always best.
and i mean this in the best way, xda is not a shopping mall it's a developers site.
requests are a reasonable thing to expect. progressively flooding the forums with useless
threads/posts is not reasonable. rather than ask for someone else to do for you, take the time
to learn so you can do for yourself. i started in may and since then i have learned a lot.
all i ask is that you consider that.

you start by using the xda search bar.
search terms such as how to compile a kernel, how to build a rom, etc.
and read, read, read.
you will also need a linux 64bit pc for rom building.
you can use a linux 32bit pc for kernel building which is where i started.
as a sort of quick link to find the threads in which i began my learning process
click on my username and select view posts option, it will show you every post i've made.
pay particular attention to the discussions between myself and Restl3ss as he completely guided me
through the process to getting my cm11 build environment set up. there is a huge deal of excellent noob-friendly
info in there.
good luck :good:

click on my username and select view posts option, it will show you every post i've made.
pay particular attention to the discussions between myself and Restl3ss as he completely guided me
through the process to getting my cm11 build environment set up. there is a huge deal of excellent noob-friendly
info in there.
good luck :good:

you will need to search the internet for instruction on installing Linux.
again, read read read.
As a recommendation search for Debian Linux or Linux Mint.
That is outside the scope of this discussion however. When you have completed that then return
to XDA to continue your quest.
