Question about playable file types - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Why cant you play avi file types on the evo? Do I need to get a special media player?
EDIT:
1. is there a file type I can convert them to?
2. if so what software can I use to convert them?
Thanks in advance!

You can play most avi's with Rock Player, however it depends on what codec the file is. If you want to play with the stock media player, you need to convert to an mp4 with h264 baseline codec. You can use handbrake to do this, there are guides everywhere. Heres one:

mp4 files from camera app

hi, i have recorded 3 movie clips with my tytn, i have wm6 installed. i sent this movies to my macbook. now i tried to watch them. no chance, only vlc can play them but without sound. what the hell, why does this codec suck so much? i have tried it in media player, and quicktime in osx. they cant play it. it should be said that quicktime can play mpeg4 files, but what is mp4?
anyone knows what codec i have to install to convert it to another format?
and why ms cant play videos from their own mobile apps?
regards, chief
I have no problems playing mp4 on my PC. I have K-lte codec pack installed but I think ffdshow is the codec being used to play it.
Mp4 should be just seen as a container for the video and audio, like .avi or .mkv. I actually use mp4 to encode my files for my PocketPC and get great quality, the upside is that these files also play on other mobile devices; my girlfriend can play them on her Samsung U600.
You running a MS OS on your Mac?
yes, i have tried it in windows xp, but i have no codec packs installed. i think the problem is, that this is not a normal mp4, the video track is ok, but the audio track is identified as "samr".
wtf is samr?
gg
omg
think the only thing i need is this samr codec for mac. in the apple docs i found the information that quicktime comes with amr support, but i think samr is not amr, so i need this codec, anyone ere who can ell me rom where i can download this?

Convert Video's to MP4

So I want to convert all of my video media to MP4 so I can play it back on my Evo. Any good tools, free or paid, that can do this as a batch? I have over 2TB of media and would like to make this as much of a stream line process as possible.
I have found and used Handbrake before, but I'd like something faster if at all possible.

I'm going to give you the tools you need to do that, but I'm first going to suggest that you google rockplayer. It's an open beta app that will play your movie files like xvid and divx similar to VLC. It works amazingly for me. But if you insist on converting then here's a link to help.

I'll check that app out and look at the link. Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Seems like rockplayer, doesnt play some of my videos.... Any ideas? Plays, but no sound.
I don't know about you guys but rockplayer is really bad at playing 720p which is all id watch on this screen..

I couldn't get either to recognise some MP4 files produced by Handbrake... wondering what I did wrong.

Anime Video Player (MKV with subs)

I miss watching anime on the go. I am trying to get away from having to convert my videos to the psp. I was hoping there would be some way to do it on my EVO. The videos are MKV with subs.
I have tried
Stock - Does not play
RockPlayer - MKV plays but no subs
Mplayer - Does not play
YxPlayer- MKV players but no subs (and stupid advertisement in the middle of the video)
-------------------------
Anyone know any apps that play MKV with subs? Also if I were to convert with handbrake, what settings should I use to make it look good and have subs?
I know vplayer supports mkv, no idea about subs. Also, it's very much an alpha release.

thanks for the suggestion but Vplayer does mkvs fine but no subs.
Any other suggestions?
rockplayer's site says it has subtitle support but to what end i'm not sure, i would love to check for you but all my anime's subs are hardcoded =P
I downloaded a divx player named "demoplayer" and it works fine.
Havne't tried it, but this player:
http://mvideoplayer.info/
Touts a bunch of subtitle format support.
I tried it. I posted the results in the OP. It doesn't work for me the HTC evo because it doesn't originally play mkv files
its not a video player, and you still have to convert them but this works great.

vPlayer plays subs fine, just extract subs from your mkv using mkvextract (gui version if you prefer) or other extractor. if the sub isnt srt you can convert it with subtitle workshop or other app. ASS and SSA subs dont work, I tested, but
a 720p mkv enconded in h264 and audio in aac with the srt in the same foder with the same file name works like a charm on my evo.

Rock player also support srt, but I still prefer something that can play the files without having to convert / extract anything, if possible..

[Q] What is the Best Video/Media Player?

Anyone know which Video/Media player has the most compatibility when it comes to video and audio?
My household has electronics (PCs, PVRs, Tablets, Phones, etc.) across various platforms/OS and I'm looking for a video/media player that I can
put on my SGS3, which will run anything I throw at it.
File types range from avi, divx, mp4, mov, wmv, etc. and codecs for the said vids range from xvid, divx, h264, vc-1, sorenson, etc. ;
audio codec follow accordingly, ranging from wma, mp3, acm, ogg, etc.
Thank you for the input
mx player
I have tried a few but Dice player has been the best IMO.
I'm a big fan of the VLC player for Android
Act1 is one of the first apps I always reinstall after a ROM FLASH.
Dice Player. And it's not close.
Thank you for all the suggestions.
I'll try out each one and see which one fits my needs

Ive had great success with this. I really like how you can swipe up/down on the left side of the screen to change brightness and swipe up/down on the right side to adjust volume. Not to mention all native file types supported.

Exciting news to someone who has been using xbmc for over 10 years. Are you saying you have already compiled a version for the S3?
+1 for MX Player. It has always worked well on all my Android devices.

MX Player plays them, and everything else I've thrown at it, just fine.

I've been a HUGE fan of Dice Player on my old Captivate, mostly because it's the only good player with samba/cifs (windows) network share support built-in. But, on my SGS3, it freezes up after the first second on a LOT of videos that MX Player handles just fine, so, MX Player wins until Dice gets fixed.
(honorable mention: MoboPlayer (... back in the day ... ))
edit: Dice might behave differently under stock Touchwiz than CM9/CM10, as I've only ever used DicePlayer on CM7 and CM9 (and diff hw, but is fine on my Nexux7 too).

+1. I usually leave the files on the home server and use esfile explorer and just stream it that way
Tried the following till now:
Mobo
Vplayer
dice
easy
And it seems like as people have suggested, MX has to most wide arrange of compatibility.

Apparently, Dice Player had a licensing issue and they released an update that constricted file compatibility. Good thing I read changelogs, as the pre-update version has proven to be an excellent option (have yet to be unable to play a file). I guess I slept on MX Player; after looking at its capabilities, I need to add it to my list .
