Looking for good pdf reader -- large text

I have hundreds of old pdf books that are formatted as 8-1/2 x 11... so they look like crap on Nexus 7 with any of the readers I have tried. What I would like to find is a reader app that will convert -- on the fly -- the files to a format easily read on N7. Any ideas?
I know I can use Calibre, etc. to convert the files before transferring them, but this is a royal pain in the rear. My files came from multiple sources so there is no consistency in data field info, etc. I would spend days converting them.
So the ideal world would be a Nexus 7 app that would take the existing format and display it in a more readable form.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

iam using QuickOffice, complete office aap. word, excel, powerpoint, pdf

Thanks, guys! I bought the $2.99 version and it does what I need and more.

Do you ezPDF users know how to change the font size in text reflow mode? It says it can be done, but I can't figure out how.

Mantano is a kluge but it allows you to crop the margins which I dont think repligo and or ezpdf can do, and can definitely change text size on reflow as well

In ezPDF I just do a tap with 3 fingers and it fits the text to the edge of the screen, getting rid of the margins. It can do that with columns too.

Have you tried FB reader?
I personally just use calibre portable, batch convert everything into epub and walk away for a while. Then do a windows search for *.epub and dump them all in an 'ebooks' folder. Bam.

I'm having some problems with opening textbooks with ezPDF and Adobe. Are there any other apps that handle large pdf documents (~1000 pages) better?

Weirdly,the method I used most I couldn't get to work when I was checking things before replying. When in pdf display, tapping with 3 fingers would expand the text and get rid of the margins on my nook color (CM7) but now on the n7 its switching to text reflow when I do a 3 finger tap. Another way is to tap the middle of the page to get the bars on the top and bottom, tap the 3 horizontal dots on the bottom right bar to get the menu and choose "Fitting to Text Column". This also locks the scrolling. Or you can zoom to the size you want and use the menu to lock horizontal scrolling.

Tap with three fingers switches to text reflow mode on my ezpdf, which is not the same thing as cropping margins. Perhaps I'm doing it wrong?
The "fitting to text column" thing is actually kind of annoying to me, because I can't just scroll down after doing so (it actually locks me in a particular page unless I manually go to the next column, which is also annoyingly highlighted). If there's a better way to use it, I'm all ears.
ebookdroid is the only other app I've tried that that gets the correct margins. It also reads djvu. (Disadvantage: the official version doesn't have search; you have to download a beta version from their dev site.) The mantano margin fit was terrible, at least for my documents.

Adobe reader is quite good also

Google Books & ePub files compatibility???

Hello everyone,
I already know the answer to this but do you think there is a way to hack the google books apk to force it to read ePub files? I am currently using adilko as my ereader and its okay but I just love the page turning animation and smoothness of google books. Adilkos animations don't come close to google books.
Anyone know if this can be done?
Does anyone know of any other readers that have a great page turning animation?

I've looked into it and I'm pretty sure there's no way of importing an epub into the Books app. I'm no expert so I don't know how much XDA hacking sweetness would have to go into making it happen if it's even possible in the first place.
I agree though. The animations and stability of Google Books is sweet. Importing and using books from the cloud would be awesome.

the Nook app is the best ive found. not as smooth as google books is, but the the customization, look, and sideloading make it the one i use the most.

I agree with ianflo. Nook seems to be (one of) the best for sideloaded epub viewing.

Personally I have been using Aldiko for my book reading needs. Works quite well if I do say so myself.

Been using Mantano reader myself, page turning, while not as good as google books, as pretty close to it. Side loading is easy, just browse to whereever you stored the epubs on your device and import.
Its an almost perfect reader, just needs a TOC button.

Two things. First, I need to make sure my favorite epub reader is mentioned, fbreader.
Second, does google books support side-loading any format? If so, calibre may be able to transform epubs to that format. It's a Windows tool for managing ebook libraries.

As for sideloading on google books, nope, the files are stored somewhere, where haven't a clue, in what format, ditto.

So I tried nook' its OK its not all that great. I downloaded one of their free books how do you side load epub files for the nook?
Mantanos free version does not include the page turn effect and the pay is like 6 bucks. A bit pricey if you ask me. I currently use aldiko and fbreader. They are both great but the page turn animation is lacking big time.
There has to be a way to side load these files through Google books no? Even if you convert the file using caliber?
Edit: figured out how to sideload to the nook app.

I won't lie its not perfect. Its a little glitchy and not the smoothest but this app definitely has potential. Not bad at all

I just recently switched from aldiko to moon+ reader. I don't use the page turn animation so I'm not sure how smooth it is, but the app as a whole is just fantastic. So much control over every part of the app it's just great.
It also has a nice sync feature using dropbox. I can put my N7 down and when I go out and open the same book on my phone it syncs the page to where I last left off.
I bought the pro version after about 10 minutes of use on the free one.

I have been preaching for a way to load epubs into google books for a long time now. All the other book reader apps have some kind of compromise or niggle that annoys me. I don't understand why google doesn't just open it up to sideloading.

Got my Nexus7 last week and while researching Kindle and Nook book rental options...I found out Google / Google Books is making an effort... See below

Been using Moon+ Reader for a couple months now, tons of features, page turn is like pulling the corner of a page and flipping it as opposed to Googles dragging the middle of the page, page turn works nice, though not quite as pretty as googles, although it is more dynamic in that it is not the same every time you turn a page. If you hold as you slide finger and move finger down as pulling you will see page react accordingly, or just tap side and flip animation. You can import and sort books according to directories which is awesome, I have a different directory for every author and sort works very well. Like the above reader said I used it for a few minutes and purchased the Pro immediately, it just works well.
Also like the person above mentioned the cloud sync is amazing. I have an S3, Galaxy Nexus, and N7, use each of them at different times, and whatever I'm reading is left off in the same spot on the next device I use.

I have tried nearly every reader out there and the best by far for me was cool reader. The front end is not as nice as some others but the ability to configure is great.

You can't but you should be able to read them if you download the Nook app for Android.

Gotta mention Mantano Premium reader here. The Page turn animation is pretty much the same as the iOS animation, and just as smooth. Feels as smooth as it can possibly be. I've tried dozens of book reader apps and all have been disappointing except for Mantano. It's a little pricey but I consider it a core must have for a tablet so it's definitely worth it. Packed full of other features too.

What are some of the better Ereader apps on Android?

I'm an avid ebook Ereader (ePub specifically) and was looking for some decent Ereader apps for my Nexus 4. I love the iBooks app on my iPad, specifically it's ability to display progress as PAGES in the book, rather than percentages. That just doesn't work for me, so if there was a decent app with a page number progress bar that you guys use, I'd love to hear about it! Thanks!

Thanks to the users who replied to this thread and sent me in the right direction, I found what I was looking for! While reaching the clean lines and streamlined interface of Google Play Books was a bit out of reach, the two apps that I narrowed it down to in the end were Mantano Reader and Aldiko. They had a nice easy to use interface that was very much in line with the interface that I was looking for, coming here from Apple's iBooks app.
I managed to sync my entire Calibre library effortlessly, using their Calibre Companion App (only $3), so that was a pleasant surprise. I tried the free content server method, but apparently that's not a viable method on Nexus devices because of their lack of some sort of usb storage compatibility (I wasn't completely sure but it just didn't work despite my best efforts).
At that point, I believed it to be a toss up, until I began to import a few of my books in. I discovered the covers were rather off on both, despite the fact I had painstakingly inserted accurate and high quality covers on all my ebooks. I researched why that could be and learned that some apps can only display jpegs as covers, so I went back and converted the epubs back to epub with the option "No SVG Cover" checked in EPUB OUTPUT during conversion. I reloaded the books and it seems like there was one true winner. Aldiko!
Yes, it doesn't have all the options that some of the other readers do, but for me, when I'm reading, I want everything to get out of the way except my paper and my text and for those of you who enjoy reading the way it is with physical books, no shaded progress bars on the bottom and such, try this out!

I personally use Mantano Ebook Reader Lite but in the past I used Moon reader and Aldiko...of course Kindle, Nook, Kobe, Google etc each have their own app for their books and you can find alot of free (promotional) books for those @ http://blog.booksontheknob.org/

I love Calibre! It's what I used to keep my library updated with the proper tags before syncing it all to my iPad. It's great. But okay, Mantano reader, how does that app show progress as you get through a book? Does it do iBooks style page numbers or is it a percentage?

It uses page #'s as you requested....as to whether they are iBook style I have no idea as I don't have any apple devices. A physical "page" may involve you swiping several times before it increments however as a screen does not = a page.

Moon+ Reader Pro is my only one eReader! Constantly improved by the dev, it's perfect!

I highly recommend FBReader. It indicates progress in pages rather than percentage as you required. It has built-in search for free ebooks across multiple catalogues and, best of all as far as I'm concerned, you can select shade of sepia for page colour that is easier on these eyes than that of any other ereader app I've tried.

I really like fbreader except it wouldn't open some pdfs. I'm not sure if it supports them to begin with but it's nice to couple books with magazines.

FBReader is brilliant. It has a lot of customisation options and supports mobi and epub formats. Being able to slide your finger up and down the left side of the page to change brightness is my fav feature.

FBReader is my favorite e-reader by far. I keep Aldiko around for reading PDFs as well.

another vote for Mantano. Works great for a large collection, esp if you've used Calibre to properly tag everything. I read a lot of books that are part of series, so it's nice to have something that correctly sorts everything. Good on both the phone and a tablet.

This is the best full feature reader by far. Right now I'm enjoying Fabrik though, clean and simple.

So many conflicting opinions! I was looking for detailed reviews for said apps but the ones that do exist are such poor reviews and don't even really seem to grasp what differentiates a good ereader from another. Can some of you post some screens of your go to ereader and whether it has, to the best of your knowledge, progress in page numbers and integration with Calibre?

I just tried out Mantano, Moon+, and FBReader and the latter seems much less polished in comparison. Google Play Books smokes all of them, but Mantano Reader comes pretty close, although it offers less customization than Moon+.

How do you sync your Calibre books with all its tags into Mantano? Is that a premium feature?

Aldiko is the best ebook reader I've found. I like it enough that I bought the premium version which basically adds no features. It properly opens all ebooks I've tried and has a very attractive design with a good feature set.

It might be a little bit of a hack, but it works. My Calibre folder is in dropbox, and I have Dropsync on my tablet set to monitor that folder. Then I just run import in Mantano every once in a while and everything works perfectly. Not sure if its a premium feature, I did purchase the app but I think its just part of it.

Fabrik is an excellent ereader. There is a free ad version and a paid one w/out adds and a few more features. It is attractive but pretty minimal on the settings side of things but has all the important features that I need: TTS, Decent fonts, and Dropbox syncing built in. Honestly the Dropbox syncing is so simple to set up (it uses oauth), you can pull down any book you have locally and it syncs your last bookmark seamlessly across all your android devices, I have it on my N4 & N10 and it's been working brilliantly. I had to support the dev by getting the paid version, not for everyone but I highly recommend trying it out.

Have you gotten text to speech working with 4.2.1 using fabrik?

Yes but with IVONA tts, it wouldn't work with the default. I think acapela works too.

For having books read to me I use ReadBoox....

I'm a fan of minimalistic ereaders with no concern to cloud storage, so I've used coolreader extensively. Lately I've been using FBreader and am quite a fan.
I might try the other ones mentioned, though. Could use a bit more elegance! Although Moon+ page flips didn't feel responsive at all, for some reason.

Hey all, what's the best ebook app that supports local libraries?

Aldiko Book Reader is quite nice. Otherwise if the file isn't too large I personally like to upload to Google Play Books.

Most of the readers I've tried from the Play Store are very good (Moon+ Reader, Nook, Kindle, FBRreader, Overdrive), but a few years ago I purchased Aldiko Pro and it has been perfect for me. There is a free version as well. I like the controls and options, the bookshelf looks nice and I've never once had any problem with it. I particularly like being able to make shortcuts to the books I'm currently reading, so I have an icon of the book cover to click on that will open the app and take me right to the last page I read.
It was one of the first apps I installed on my Nexus 7, I've probably read over a hundred books with it and I use it almost daily. But almost all the readers are free or have a free version, try them all! Read a chapter or two with each one and see which is most appealing to you personally.

I used to use the Nook reader until PlayBooks gained the ability to upload your ePubs to your Google account. Now i use PlayBooks for my reading. Like the fact that it syncs where you left off, bookmarks, markers etc across your devices.

Mantano is the absolute best epub reader I have found. There is a free version on the play store. Try it out. It also does pdf.

This. There is no better option than Google's own app - smooth, syncs progress and bookmarks, syncs the actual epub (after uploading it to your account), and best of all free.

Test out Play Books. Once your collection is uploaded, the syncing is great between your devices.

+1 now that you can upload your epubs or pdfs, play book is my recommendation. Manteno would be second. I find the formatting better on play book than manteno. The syncing between devices just seals the deal for play book. Manteno charges to sync between devices...

PS - the Nook app does all of this also. for free (unlike some of the others..obviously PlayBooks is free as well).
The thing I like about Nook over PlayBooks is that Nook gives me more text formatting options. Mainly, the ability to change margin widths. I have found this especially useful for reading some e-books.
Most of the big name readers have these sorts of additional text formatting options, however some charge for sync capabilities, etc.
I personally think that the actual contents of my books look the best in the Nook app (once you play around and get the formatting setup how you want it) and with free syncing between all of your devices, it's all win.
To each their own, obviously.

I highly recommend Google Play Books for epubs as well. It is very nice looking, smooth, and the sync feature is great. I also LOVE the look of the widget, it is the centerpiece of my home screen. My only complaint is no support for my comics in cbr format, and also it seems that pdf pages (both pdf books and cbr->pdf conversions) load rather slowly at times.
But if you will solely be using epub, you can't go wrong here. You may have problems uploading converted epubs though.

I seem to have a lot of problems with the epubs I have uploaded to play books, they take forever to load. I usually don't bother waiting. Aldiko and Moon+ are both good options. I also highly recommend aldiko sync to sync between devices.

I also tried a few different EPUB readers but Aldiko was the one that stayed my Nexus.

So I'm playing with Google Play Books, and generally I like it. One problem however, on several books it won't adjust the font size. I can change the setting but there's no change in the display. Any thoughts? Is the epub file hard-coded or something? Thanks...

I've tested many epub software and my favorite by far is moon+ reader. You can configure it to be perfect for you. The other soft doesn't have near as much setting to adjuste your reading to be as confortable as possible. But yeah you will have to take 10/20 minutes the first time configuring it (and have a few more tweak later too to do to be perfect). And that the only soft that render all my epub perfectly; during my testing I find some reader cut some text for no reason (aldiko in particuliar) but maybe that have been patched.

Can you read textbooks comfortably on the N72?

Hey guys, long time XDA viewer but first time poster. I am a college student currently with the ipad mini. I use my tablet mainly for textbooks since my campus takes up to 30 minutes to walk across and I would hate to lug around huge textbooks for biochemistry and the like all day. My ipad mini is decent for textbooks, the width allows me to view text fine. But I was wondering what your opinions were using the N72 for textbook viewing. It is narrower but the resolution is higher so maybe text would be easier to read?

I find it great. I haven't used an actual textbook file but I do have a PDF of comp science and it's awesome for that. Also I read eBooks on it daily. If using Google Play App you can even adjust the font size to make it bigger/smaller (which all epub/pdfs files can be uploaded to Play Books through the website).

The display looks brilliant! Wow, I did not know about that functionality in play books. I will definitely test it out and purchase a N7 if it works well. Haha I'm pretty excited to ditch my boring mini...
How exactly do you alter the font size? Maybe I am being a little unobservant here or is this only possible for epub versions?

I think it might only be available for epubs. Apparently my comp science is epub as well, thought it was PDF. Either way just tap the middle of the screen and press the "Aa" button, it will let you change the font size if PDF also supports it. You can also change the text alignment, background color, font and line height.

Ahh I see. I guess I can always convert the files and read them that way. I'll definitely look into it when i get back to the states. Thanks a lot Tainted!

I had a question regarding books. My wife uses the Kindle app to read books on my tablet. I usually convert the books to pdf and drop them in the Kindle folder.
What is the best way to use the Google Play app to read her books? Convert? Will they just open or do they need to be dropped somewhere?

The only way to read non-Google Play books in the Play Books app is to upload them through the website. You can upload any PDF or ePUB file here: https://play.google.com/books/uploads
It will automatically show up on all your devices logged in to your account.

Thank you sir.

For PDF font size adjustment you have to use some app with text reflow capability.
I use EasyPDF Reader - the best in class in my opinion.
For ebooks I use Moon Reader, which also can read PDF files.
