Gingerbread? - Continuum Android Development

So, since I'm guessing the Nexus S is at least somewhat similar to its Galaxy S cousins. What are the chances of getting some Gingerbread going over here?

I see it happening but not for a long while given we don't have 2.2 yet.

Just need a developer to tweak the Nexus S ROM once it's out.... Problem is we don't have any devs yet...

The Nexus S kernel source is now available.
http://androidcommunity.com/nexus-s-kernel-source-available-now-20101214/

I have a fascinate, but was curious what the continuum users were up to. Bad news is that the nexus S is gsm, so their kernal can't be ported over to any of the cdma galaxy phones due to irreconcilable differences in the RIL.

WARNING! RANT AHEAD!

UUUGGGHHHHH, When are us CDMA users gonna get a phone like that!!?!??!???!
I mean yeah, we've got better phones than ATT for the most part android wise, but still! This is is really bugging me! I already know the answer to my own question but AAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!
/rant

my best guess is that gingerbread/aosp etc will have to be built/completed for the fascinate...and hopefully it can trickle down to the continuum

Sorry to bust your bubble but that's total bull. The ril is inside the rom itself, only a few referenes to the gsm network are present in the kernel itself. The only problems your would run into would be externel sdcard support and the ticker being supported if at all.

Given that the HTC Rezound uses the exact System on Chip (the MSM8660), hopefully this means the majority of drivers required for our build are now out in the wild.

you should repost it in the skyrocket forum since no one is working on ICS here. T989 is waiting for Samsung
Keep in mind that even though they have leaked ics. HTC , Samsung and others use vastly different drivers from each other. Unless its from the galaxy s2 lte ,skyrocket or our phone it really wont help.

Do you get my point now or is the ICS wanting salvation in your mouth blocking the thinking? There is more to these phones than just a processor running a big screen.

Verizon roms to sprint roms..

I seem to always get in trouble for making a thread, or it goes unnoticed. just a question on how much work would it be to port over a Verizon gnex rom to sprint gnex? I'm not dev at all but I imagine it would only be a radio and some other small things. Again I could be missing the big picture, I just got my sprint gnex yesterday and I can't wait for highly custom roms! If its not to advanced I'd love to take a crack at it if anyone would be willing to teach me how
Mods move it to wherever you want....
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Too me it just seems that something needs to be done with the radio as of now flashing a verizon rom works fine except for the radio which is data and whatnot. As soon as they get aosp running with mms fixed and find the radio so if the radio gets borked then I am sure those developers of the verizon roms could hopefully just add compatibility with sprint.
That is all I know as of now
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
why would you want that? the sprint rom is better
What makes it better though? Aren't they literally the exact same phone just different networks? I'm glad its better if it is I almost bought the Verizon one hahah

One is not better then the other
In fact like i said above Verizon roms almost fully work on ours except the radio, once they get that fixed i am sure we can share roms with verizon people but who knows? Our device is still brand new and will be a little bit til we have as many roms as verizons forum
BTW don't flash verizons roms until there is a radio fix some poor people have broken radios and are waiting as people are looking to fix it.
just in case you were thinking about flashing one
There is nothing superior about Sprint roms that isn't remedied by AOSP.
Now if you are talking about zip roms, tsk, tsk.
Those are a crime against humanity...er, the Nexus The device is open enough to not warrant such a thing.

They use differen radio frequencies, which the CPUs are programmed for. They are incompatible. That's what causes the data problems. That's just about the only difference in terms of hardware.

Once we have the cdma radio pulled and mms working would there be anyway that verizon roms with a little modification to the radio and whatnot to get them working easily. or do they have to redo the whole rom special?

The only real difference from Sprint to Verizon are the ril props outside of the mms issue.
So, no, not hard, but just as easy for the devs to simple compile for Sprint.

[Q] EVO 4g LTE or Galaxy Nexus??

Guys i need some help deciding. I am upgrade eligible in June just in time to get the new EVO on launch day. But i dont know if i should get that or the Galaxy Nexus. Here are my thoughts...
EVO
Pros
Sprint flagship phone, hopefully meaning fast updates and large dev community
sligtly better specs including S4 which is a monster from what i understand
the option to run Sense 4.0 or an AOSP rom
kickstand?
Cons
Non-Removable battery
not the most aesthetically pleasing phone
Galaxy Nexus
Pros
its a nexus.... gaurenteed updates
removable battery
Cons
not the top of the spec pile
There is a few threads already.. from the gist of it, it really comes down to user preference. I would wait until galaxy s3 is announced before making a decision.
Gnex- you will get latest software updates fast..
Evo lte - you'll eventually get aosp roms.. but newer hardware, better build quality, etc..
Play with both at the Sprint store
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
Gnex for openess and updates and no manufacture restriction.
Evo for "hardware" and "build quality" and restrictions and very timely updates and less developer support.
I'm getting the gnex simply because its better. The evo has no removeable battery.. that's a big no no. It has a snapdragon which is closed architecture... which means it limits the developers on android and open source OS. Htc's build is great but their super lcd is non comparable to a samoled. Really all personal preference but from my stand point an htc is not a real option.
Oh yeah LEARN HOW TO USE THE SPACE BAR MY GOD.

For my mom who knows nothing about development and could care less about rooting her phone, I'm getting the Evo. She really just wants her phone to work and I think the Evo is more sturdily built.
For myself, I'm waiting for the SGS3 or better yet, the next Nexus that will be based off it. Not in a huge hurry to update, cause I still love my OG Epic and it does everything I need it to for now.

Why Sprint always gets way fewer roms than ATT and Tmobile?

Why Sprint always gets way fewer roms than ATT and Tmobile?
I had original Epic and Epic Touch on Sprint and we always get fewer roms and last to get updates is there a reason for this?Seams like Tmobile has the most roms and Att is not too far behind it,is it because we are on cdma?If so do Verizon got slow development too,or is it just Sprint?
GSM is easier to develop with, open source. Rest of the world uses GSM. If international version gets development then generally it can be easily ported to a US GSM variant

I know i have both Epics, those CM8/9 are nowhere near daily driver and been in development forever,it will take at least another six months for them to be stable. And latest FF18 ota update that Sprint released today for Epic Touch is a joke and buggy, plus we already had buggy FF18 leak for months now,and that is what they call ota?At least they released ics source for EpicTouch-that is something other carriers did not get, probably did it to make up for such late ics ota.

From what I understand, the Evo 3D had horrible development. The OG Evo had amazing development mostly because it was the Google I/O phone, and it had so much new technology that devs really wanted a crack at developing new features.
The 3d had decent development until they started running off developers with childish antics. As mentioned GSM is worldwide and CDMA is not, Verizon is in limbo as far as I can tell with customers and developers with this locked boot loader crap and developer phone price tag.
From the thread made about Verizon and their locked phone, there are a lot of pissed off people who may jump ship or just send the phone back to Verizon. Most don't have an extra $600 + dollars laying around for a new phone and they won't get what they want for their already used s3. Sprint has some decent developers on board including Myn IMHO.
Maybe the lack of sufficient data speeds? :silly:
Sprint phones require special CDMA versions of winZip.
And there's a supply shortage, so we are all still waiting for our pre-orders to arrive.

It will be a while before the hardware on this phone gets outgrown. That's one of the reasons I originally bought this phone instead of the S3 when it was released....because I knew THAT phone's hardware would eventually be outgrown by software updates. But I know as long as the Nexus 4 is able to handle software upgrades, we will too. And we all know the Nexus devices are first in line with the software upgrades.

I'm brand new to the whole development aspect of Android and have never really peaked at the code so please excuse my ignorance on the topic, but why is GSM to CDMA so hard?
I would think the OS would be built in a way that it utilizes drivers/modules to offload a lot of that dirty work. So it would be something like:
(quick pseudo code so don't get nitpicky.. just trying to get the idea across)
Code:
network = new NetworkDriver('LGOG_CDMA'); //swap out CDMA for GSM drivers, etc..
network.init();
network.sendPacket(your_data_stuff);
and then it would be a matter of then at least trying and hacking the drivers from 4.2, assuming system calls don't change drastically with every minor release wouldn't this work?

I can't speak on specifics, but we had a N4 Conversion Rom for 4.2.2 and it quickly became known to brick certain phones. It was discouraged to use it.

and then it would be a matter of then at least trying and hacking the drivers from 4.2, assuming system calls don't change drastically with every minor release wouldn't this work?

It isn't too bad, but there are other hardware and software differences. Stay patient, we're not far off.

I think it be easier to port from s4 ,HTC one because hardware wise were almost identicle wise... Software wise know that's a different story ....

We are building from source, not porting zips. It'll be CM10.2 when ready. Also, the Nexus 4 is much closer to us than the S4 or One.
But since hardware wise we all run the same base wouldnt it be easier from any of them ? I've messed around have had a s4 ROM running with data working on my phone ...
