[Solved][Help] Req. the Contacts app - Defy General

Well, I deleted one app too many from my Defy. Titanium Backup is wonderful, but it backs up ONLY DATA for system apps, so I'm hosed UNLESS...
Could someone mail me the original Contacts app? It's data backup is named 'Contacts-2.1-update1' with the internal name 'com.motorola.blur.contacts'. I think that's all I'd need. There's also 'ContactsUnconnected-2.1-update1' and 'Work-Contacts-2.1-update1' so it wouldn't hurt to get them too.
BTW, the symptoms? When I try to dial by tapping on a contact name the call fails, a red stop sign flashes over the signal strength bars, and an alarm message is posted saying something to the effect that the network service is not available. To make a call I need to do a long press and choose Call from the menu. Ouch!
So, please, anyone who knows how to do it (I use Ghost Commander, a free app, which has a Send built in) send this app to 'Mars-On-Earth at dslextreme dot com'.
Thanks a bunch!

Sign up as a developer at Motorola, it's free. Then you can download "Motodev Studio" which among other things, will let you accesss /system/app
Otherwise, reflash the rom using RSD Lite, there's a guide for it here:

Are you saying the "Motodev Studio" includes the original app files?

MOTODEV Studio does not contain app files. It is Motorola's developer tools for Android phones. Sorensiim is referring to the DDMS perspective that ships with it. DDMS allows you to extract files off the phone and there is an Eclipse view in MOTODEV Studio.
If you already have the Android SDK installed, you can run the DDMS desktop application from sdk/tools (on windows, it's a .bat file).

Do you even have to sign up for anything?
I haven't and yet I was able to find this download page by Googling 'MotoDev Studio'.
Anyway, I just wanted to double-check/see if I understood things correctly, does MotoDev Studio let you delete/uninstall apks from the handset?
Could it be used as a simpler method of doing this.

Motodev studio gives you a nice graphical interface to pushing and pulling files, for instance, one could push the contacts apk to the phone.
If you sign up, it will even download the latest Android SDK for you

@Sorensiim, @ericcl:
Thanks, but my problem is I deleted the app. Erased, puff, gone. I do have the tools to put it back, I don't have anything to put in there. And there is in /system/app and what is the native Contacts application binary. SO, would some kind soul grab the binary off of their healthy system and send it off to me. Please.

Get the apk from here lad

Download the system.zip and extract the apk from there
Oh and a tip - dont delete apks rename them to say .bak especially if you are messing about trying to see whats safe to delete, that way you can just change the name back

Good call! [ & embarrassed]

Rats! This is so close, maybe close enough, but the ROM dumps are for the UK model. The USA Defy has newer software (it appears. The US version is 2.1-update1) and the apps seem structured differently. In the USA ROM there is just one Contacts app, on the UK one it seems to be split in two, *Data and *Provider app. Hmm.

Hi, sorry for the language..
Id deleted some apps yesterday and i have no menu anymore... so i think i just failing during my choose. When i restart the phone i only can have access to my account on motoblur... and it doesn't work as well cause he cannot connect or something more, i don't know what happened.
I'm so disappointed. Must I install system.zip by the pc ? I'll try that when it finishs to dl but...
EDIT : Flashing the rom, i success... omg so much fear thank you for your guide

the uk version is 2.1 update 1 too. The moto apps are the same as far as I know/have read? then again I have never seen the US system/app.
There are many Dev's who have reflashed the UK .sbf (because the us one is not available) - fixed the 3g and wifi calling and say its the same
in my dump I have
contactsdata.apk
contactsprovider2_0.apk
contactsunconnected.apk
Think we need another US user to check their system/app and let us know what they have.

Ok I just pulled back the system/app dump JBoogie3 posted from the Tmobile US rom from Here
It has exactly the same 3 contact apks as the uk rom. So not too sure where you are getting there was only 1 lol.

Higgsy, you just beat me to posting that link to the US ROM dump.
Now, the discrepancy in naming stems from how different utilities display the app names. In TitaniumBackup the file I junked is called 'Contacts-2.1-update1' with domain 'com.motorola.blur.contacts', and I'm still not quite sure what is its file system name. TitaniumBackup does not display it.
I ran a diff on the file list in JBoogie3's ROM dump and my Defy's file system (in the attachment) and the most likely match for the above file would seem to be the BlurContacts.*
Which begs the question, what file manager do you guys use? What for SMB access? FTP? Is it one and the same utility, or separate.
So far SwiFTP (a server on the phone) has been solid for me, and with WinSCP (on a PC) it's been a good combination at home. What's good/can be trusted on (standalone) Android?

root explorer (application) will let you show whats actually in system/app - titanuim aint gonna show you this. Titanium IMO is only good for backing up user apps
Also you can use motodev studio and browse system/app via that
Or good old adb
Theres probably a 101 other ways too - these are my suggestions.
EDIT: an FTP client is not the way forward for sure

oh and blurcontacts.apk also resides in both the UK and US system/app, so thas the one you've deleted and need to replace.
I would either install root explorer or motodev studio (easiest way for you) and check your system/app against the dump and replace any files as required

Right, the file permissions, but a good FTP utility is always good for /sdcard and backups, right? ;-)

I'd like to thank Higgsy for much advise, and JBoogie3 for posting the US ROM dumps from which I got the needed apps. Through many twists and turns my goof up has been remedied. And I really mean twists and turns, the latest being that even after the deleted apps had been copied back to their place they were still not being recognized, until after I realized that all but the restored apps in /system/app were owned by 'root', while the restored apps were owned by 'sdcard_rw', or something similar. chmod and chown'ing finally got it all working.
Thanks again.

I Created Auto-Sign app for update.zip and Launcher.apk! :Possibly abandoned!

**UPDATE** This project maybe abandoned, after using Stericson's method i found signing to be much easier. You can find his method here. There has been 26 people who downloaded my tool and if those users want me to continue on this project, i will. but i recommend giving Stericson's method a try. You will still need to make sure both Jave JRE and Java JDK are installed with Stericson's Method and also with his script make sure to type in yes or no, not y or n =).
I would appreciate if anyone using my tool would post here if they want me to continue with this project or not.
Right now it will only sign update.zip,framework-res.apk and Launcher.apk. I am working on adding all of the other apks to this app.
This app was built in Visual Studio 2008, you may need .Net3.5 Framework installed to run it.
To use this app just extract it to a folder.
It includes:
update
-update\app
-update\framework
Auto-Sign.exe
signapk.jar
testkey.pk8
testkey.x509.pem
This app works the same as Dave Da illest 1's autosign.bat. If you have signed themes with dave's method you will be able to use this.
You will need to make sure that Java is installed for this to work, make sure to install JRE and JDK here.
Once you extract the files into a folder, copy a theme's update.zip into the root folder. Extract the the files you will be editing, edit your files, drag them back into the apk use this program to sign the apk, drag the apk back into update.zip and use this program to sign the update.zip.
When signing Launcher.apk or any other app's apk the program will look in:
"whatever folder you extracted to"\update\app.
Please leave me any comments or questions i will try to respond to them. If you have any other ideas or plain think this app sucks and i should delete immediately let me know =)
I will add the updates and some screen shots in the next few days.
::UPDATE:: 01/17/09
I made a few changes to the app, I also added the folders that the program is expecting to be there. Now when you load the app it tells you if the files are found or not. Also I added framework-res.apk to the list to be signed.
I am working on a part of the app that will allow it to check if the original file was signed or not. This way it will not create a _signed.apk or zip.
::UPDATE::: 01/18/09
I have added some labels to the GUI that will tell you if the files are found or not. I changed around the buttons and gave a little bit better description under the read me button. I got rid of the message boxes when you started the app. Comment here and let me know what you think.
Sucks.
Just kiddin works fine thank ya. =D
I just think you guys are making more work for yourselves by using this version of the signing tool that still creates a double. Why not use the version that overwrites the file with the signed apk, so you will do less work?

Hey Stericson, I changed the code in that app so it doesn't write the new signed file. But i noticed the original file didnt change either. Should signing the file change the modified time when you look at the properties? if not there is there another confirmation, to tell the file has been signed?
yes it should show a modified time.

I am running tests on update.zip, Launcher.apk and framework-res.apk. In the next few days i will release a full blown app that will sign all of the apks that people will be editing.
Thanks. I am looking forward to that release. I tried to use the app to resign Launcher.apk and I can't find the Launcher_signed in the app folder.

The way the program is now it is a little more work, but a lot of people don't know anything about system variables and eventually i would like to make the program import the files directly into the correct apks and then push them into the update.zip after they are signed and then sign the update.zip itself.
I am still not getting any new files or folders that say ...._signed. I am now using v.65.

We have to sign the files because Google setup Android so not just anyone could install anything they wanted. They wanted to have control of what was installed. Which was flubbed by JesusFreke and the other XDA hackers.
Short answer...it is a security measure set by Google.
more proof the universe is against me.
so... i tried using koush's steps to install auto-rotate browser. i first had to download the android sdk, however i cannot get it to install correctly and have never seen the tools folder. then i find out that there is a way that is easier (for me). downloaded the auto-sign app. then, found out i had to download 2 java apps, so i tried. the installation was unsuccessful. this is odd because with all the steps it took to get root, it was actually quite easy. but auto-rotate browser just does not want to be on my G1.
ok, i tried downloading the java apps again, this time, instead of downloading with the sun download manager, i double clicked on the file name to download with my firefox browser and it worked just fine. fyi.
**UPDATE** This project maybe abandoned, after using Stericson's method i found signing to be much easier. You can find his method here. BTW.. this auto-sign tool was the only way I could get signing to work.. so THANK YOU and I hope you will continue this project.
I built this tool before i had a full understanding about signing. there is no need to sign the other apks...just the update.zip. It signs all the apks below it. so this tool is fully functional. I just didnt know it at the time heh =)
Glad it helped you out.
vista 64 bit?
hello, i was wandering if this would work with vista 64 bit.. for some odd reason on my old computer i was able to sign the files no problem but now with my new computer after "signing" it gets stuck on the animated screen... Is anyone using this and running Vista 64bit?? Have a good day..

replacing xt9

not really sure which forum to post this in (sorry if this is the wrong one), but all of the new roms that have been created seem to lack the xt9. i had really started to like it. i downlaoded the system dump and was wondering, if i copied the T9DB folder (from the dump) over to the system folder of whatever rom im going to flash, would that fix the problem.
Melvin's ROM: Beast MOD II has it. I'm pretty sure this is more a general question though. Also pretty sure copying and pasting is a no go.

the xt9 option is in all of them under keyboard, but doesnt work. open up sms and try to type something.
i just checked :\
You also need the lib, libXt9core.so. Melvin probably removed it. You should be able to drop that and the apk in their right places and it should work.

its very simple. first i downloaded this system dump. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300682 . then opened it up and dragged the folder T9DB over to my desktop. then plugged my phone in the computer and connect to usb storage. dragged the file over to my external sd card and unplugged my phone. then open up root explorer (or some file explorer that allows root access) and copied the file and navigated your main folder (just titled /) scrolled down to find system and pasted the folder in there. restart and it works
the lib is also required for it to work but that wasnt removed witht he rom im using. if you want to check to see if its still there go to the lib folder located within your system folder and scroll all the way to the bottom and their should be a file called libxt9core.so
i tried to go into as much detail as possible to make it as simple as possible for you :]
This is one of the few features of the SGH-T989 which I truly despise. I LOVED the auto-correct on the Nexus S, but XT9 frustrates me terribly because a) it assumes English and I do not always type in English and b) it will drop entire words into my sentences if I hit space or something, ending in some REALLY weird messages!! I turned it off, because it was taking me a lot longer trying to go back and edit my messages ex-post-facto than just make a spelling error here or there.
do you know where i can get the lib file at? im using bombaridier and it doesnt have it in the lib file.

Any way to copy file when not rooted?

Hello all
Forgive me for any ignorance for any part of this, kinda still learning the Android stuff.
Basically I got a Tab Pro 8.4 for Xmas, an like a lot of it, but really don't care for the huge Weather widget, or how it's designed. But I do want to stay with a Accuweather version.
My first learning of Android came from a Stratosphere II phone I have, an I kinda like that weather widget. Plus I think it would be a little smaller.
To mention, I rooted that device as it was pretty easy, (an way out of warranty), but I have yet to root the 8.4 as seems to be more complicated and I kinda almost don't want to unless I really have too as I really don't want to trip the Knox.
Anyway, so my goal here was to try the Strat's weather widget in the 8.4, so I went into the system folder of the Strat, got all the files that had to do with anything of the weather widget, copied them to my PC, put them in the doc's folder of the 8.4, and then tried to copy them to same system folder, which I was able to view with Root Explorer, but when I went to paste them in, it told me I couldn't as the device was not rooted.
So is there any way I can get these files into there?
Thanks for any help.
To write or modify with '/' or '/system' files you will need root, really anything outside of the /mnt/sdcard directory(s) are mostly read only or 'locked' with permissions to a certain user (each "app" is a separate user).
Anyways I don't see why you would need to put the file there anyways as you should be able to just install it as a normal "User" application regardless where it was installed on the other device, all you need is the .apk file from the other device then install it on the 8.4, you will first need to enable "unknown Sources" in Settings.
(First on device that has the app you want - look in "/system/app/" ," /system/priv-app/" - there should be some files with a ".apk" extension find the one for the weather app /widget you want to use, and copy it to your pc, then copy the file to the tab 8.4, click on it in a file manager such as root explorer or the one that came with the tablet, it should prompt you to enable Unknown Sources under settings , enable the option, then proceed to install it - you shouldn't need any other files besides the apk )
If it doesn't work then the apk could be coded to a certain device (as some Samsung apps are) or just too old to run on kitkat.
See my screenshots for some basic example (the apk file will probably be called something else on the other device)
Thanks so much otyg, you are always such a great help.
So just to reply a few things . . . yes, the files were in the system/apps folder from the original device. Second, when I first got the 8.4, I went through all the settings menus, an found that thing on "Unknown Sources" an clicked it, kinda remember that from something I learned with the smartphone, so knew right off to check that. Guess the only reason am mentioning, is to mention that I have been using a few Explorer apps, but none have promoted me for what you mentioned, an am guessing as it was already checked(?).
So at the moment I have the files sitting in a documents folder of the 8.4, but now to ask on those . . . when I went into the app folder of the org device, there were several files that had the accuweather in them.
First on this point, there were three that had the apk ext, an those were, AccuweatherDaemon.apk, AccuweatherWidget_Main.apk and, AccuweatherWidget.apk.
Then to mention too, each one had a corresponding worded file with a .odex ext.
So not knowing much, I copied all six.
So don't know if you could answer this, but do you have any idea of which I should install, or should I install all of them? An again just to remind, what I am looking for here is the Widget from my org device, but I do want it to work. Then one more question on this point, is there anyway to uninstall these if any cause some kind of issue?
Lastly an just to mention, as I posted, I don't know much about the Android system, so just didn't know that a .apk file is basically a install file. KInda thought they were application execution files, which I think they are(?) . . . but they can be app install files a well? Sorry to ask such a knob question as well as so many others, but is how I will learn.
Again, thanks so much for the help.

Apk files used for installing apps like an exe file on windows or a dmg on mac, when you install something from the play store it is delivered as an APK file but it just happens "behind the scenes" so to speak, you are just bypassing the play store and directly installing the app but it's the same process...
When you install a app this is what happens in most cases.
1. The APK(s) gets stored in /data/app/<applicationname.apk> (this will get removed on uninstall.)
2. it creates a unique directory under /data/data/<applicationname> (this will get removed on uninstall)
3. it can create a directory under /mnt/sdcard/Android/data/<applicationname> (these files usually get left behind on uninstall but since it's on the user storage the user can remove them, it usually contains settings or cache files)
You don't need the .odex files, these are encrypted and probably wont work on other devices, it's basically the apk optimized for the device so it starts faster.
Just install the 3 apk's, the widget probably needs the main program for support and the daemon service probably runs in the background for updates ..etc, since you are installing them as a normal user it won't do much harm and you can always remove them if they do cause an issue, Applications are self contained and when you remove them the corresponding data folders are removed too (on the device) so it is unlikely to do any lasting damage.
To remove them go to Settings -> General -> Application Manager -> Downloaded and remove the apps from there . (if you don't see them swipe right until you see All )
Thanks so much for the reply an the education otyg
Did just as you suggested, deleted the odex files an tapped on the apk's to install, an don't know for why, but while it seemed to go as normal, in the end, I got a message saying they did not install, for all three.
Replaced the odex's back an that didn't seem to make a dif.
Perhaps it didn't work as could not install as device is not rooted?
Just to mention, I did have something with my Strat II device back a few months ago, where I placed another version of a accuweather widget in the systems/app folder, an it did show up.
At any rate, was a good try an thanks again for all the info.
Perhaps if I can get this device rooted, I can try again by just putting the apps in the folder.

Something happened to my phone and I ended up having to wipe and re-flash everything. Long story short, I did have the Samsung email 5.0.0.00400 install with the new ROM but I accidentally deleted it via TI Backup. I tried re-installing a backed up version of 5.0.0.00200 but it will not install for some reason.
I've searched around and the most recent apk I could find is 3.3.something, which I have installed now, but I'd really like to get back to the newer version. I know I can re-flash the ROM, but I've done quite a bit of setup, restoring apps and widgets, etc. at this point and I'd hate to lose all that. Figured I'd ask here before going down that road.
Could someone please be kind and link me to a stock Samsung mail app apk for version 5.0 and above?
Thank you in advance!

Hey Aaron very much appreciated! :good::good:
Still a noob when it comes to some most of this stuff. In this case odex vs deodex. I see the 2 apk files as well as all the files in the lib folder. I'm assuming the apk files install as normal? What do I do with the lib files?
Thanks again for your help!

No problem.
If your rooted, you could try just copying the folders over to /system/app. The folder gets 0755 permission and the files get 0644 permission. And then they would be system files. This should work fine, as long as the permissions are set.
Or you could just try installing them regularly.
And Then if you want maybe use Ti Backup to make them system files.
Hope that helps

Yes I am rooted. So just to talk this out before I do anything... I've looked up how to set permissions for files and folders. I have ES File Explorer and understand I can change permissions with root explorer on. I've never done this before so just to make sure I have it correct...
I would copy both secEmail_K and SecExchange folders to the /system/app folder on the phone.
Using Root explorer I would set permissions as:
Folders: rwxr-xr-x
Files: rw-r--r--
Thanks again for your help and quick responses. One more question if you don't mind, just to help me understand permissions. If the files have no executable permissions for any of the 3 classes it would seem as though they wouldn't be able to run. I'm sure I'm misunderstanding however.

I think so, attached pic. Plus make sure owner and group are root.
This is right from my phone now. So all should be good. You might not even have to change it, they might be good before.

[new] how to share apps ( xap, appx) to another phone in windows 10 mobile

Hiiiiiiiiii Ya
I AM Fi1ite WITH A NEW TRICK
THIS IS MY FIRST POST ON WINDOWS 10 MOBILE
AND
THE SECOND ON XDA FORUM
THIS TUTORIAL TEACHES YOU HOW TO SHARE YOUR APPS FROM YOUR WINDOWS 10 MOBILE TO ANOTHER WINDOWS 10 MOBILE INSTANTLY JUST LIKE SHARE IT APP IN ANDROID BUT A LITTLE HARDER.
GONNA TEACH THIS IN TWO PARTS.
1. SHARING (THE APP FROM YOUR PHONE)
2. CARING (INSTALLING IT ON RECEIVER's PHONE)
TUTORIALS:
SET UP: :highfive:
In both the Phones turn on developer mode
SETTINGS->.UPDATE & SECURITY->FOR DEVELOPERS->DEVELOPER MODE->Yes
Using file manager in windows phone 10:
Extract Dependencies_ARM.zip (attached to this post) to both sender's and receiver's phone
Install All the extracted apps to both sender's and receiver's phone
Install InteropTools App (attached to this post) to both sender's and receiver's phone
Install AppDataManage tool (attached to this post) to both sender's and receiver's phone
Install WinZip Universal to both sender's and receiver's phone using windows store
After Success full Installation in both devices:
SHARING PART:
Open AppDataManage tool in sender's phone
Navigate to Settings.Turn on Show advance options.Back to main menu.Navigate to Apps.Tap on any app to share .Press Create Archive from installation path.Save the zip file as App.zip
Let the process complete. Chilllzzz :angel::angel:
Exit the app.
Tap the zip using file manager (it will automatically open the zip with WinZip Universal). Tap the folder Shown
Check for AppxManifest.xml File
-If it exists then The App is Share Able.
-If it does not exist. The App is non share able. Possibly look for another App to share.
If AppxManifest.xml exist then: :good:
Look For Something like AppxSignature File (AppSignature or AppxSignature or AppsSignature ). If it exist then delete it using long press menu.
Save the zip file using the toolbar in Winzip Universal. Share The Zip file using bluetooth to the Receiver's phone. YAY!!!:laugh:
You Can Share This To Multiple Phones. OOOOHOOOO!!:laugh:
INSTALLING IT ON RECEIVER's PHONE:
Tap the zip file (located in downloads folder) in receiver's phone using its file manager and extract its contents to the same folder.
Open Interop Tools in Her Phone (Receiver's phone).
Select "This Device" . Navigate to Application Manager. Tap on developer mode.
Swipe to Register a package. Browse to the extracted contents. Locate The AppxManifest.xml. Select it.
Press Register Package. Wait for it to finish registering.
YEPPI !!!!!!!!
Puff!!!! You Have Successfully Created a backup of your app as well as shared it too
Thanks Alot To Them Whose Apps I have Used.

Dude,
I have few question about windows 10 phone.
1. How can install xap from windows (not PC)
2. Can I access C: drive (like PC)
.
.
.
Finally I can't post anything in Xda (I'm new user). Send icon isn't working on "xda lab" app.
look, only "patched" xap files can install, and ONLY via PC with XAP deploy method...

So is there anyway to get "Client for Hangouts" back? Microsoft removed it from the store, but I still have it installed on my old Lumia 530 and I want to install it on my newer 1520. This won't work?

Hmm... Looks Like There is a Bug in The Backup Tool.. No Problem .. Its the Men Who Makes Faults And its The Buggy Apps Which Create Problems... However The Dev Worked Hard For His Tool and I do Respect Him...
Here's The Solution For YOUR PROBLEM It Works For All Apps Whether Paid Or Free.
1. Get Full FileSystem Access On Your Phone [Pls Browse The Xda For That ]
2. Uninstall The Backup Tool.
2. Connect Your Phone To PC
3. Using Explorer Go to C:\Data\Programs\WindowsApps And Search For Folder With Partial App Name And Make Backups Of Your Apps.. [You Might Get many folders with similar name in that case See The Size Mb of the folders and take the one which seems appropriate to you]
4. Rest Part You Know.. [About deleting The AppxSignature File and Sharing]
I HOPE THIS HELPS.... I KNOW YOU WILL NOT EVEN THANK ME FOR THIS ...

Hehehehehahahahahaha .. You are soo childish ... You don't have any knowledge about paid apps in Microsoft store... Please Use You Brain if you have one ... if you don't Then read this and understand why my post is not a piracy...
Paid apps does not works rather they crashes as they looks out for a online license file in the device which can only be achieved when an app is bought... That's the reason Latest Version of Minecraft PE doesn't works [Try it!!] ..... Though I ve hacked Minecraft as there are other ways to do it... but I wont share them as Its against The forum Rules..

That's the reason I advised to navigate to WINDOWSAPPS using full FS access...
Thanks for the correction...
