[Q] HTC Sense or Cyanogen? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, I want to give the Cyanogen ROM a go, but I want to know which is better with your opinions, and since I'm on a Sense ROM at the moment, if I did a nand backup, wiped etc, flashed Cyanogen and found it difficult to get used to, would I be able to go back with just a nand restore?
Thank You

I went cyanogen rc2-thyrus theme,launcher pro.It blows sense to ****.
More ram spare ,overclock, smoother and i can take the piss out of the misses as she's on sense.Personally i am 100% happy i flashed.
yep you just flash a backup using clockworkmod and you are back to normal.
Only problem i have found is should i use adw launcher or launcher pro ,they both have there ups and downs.
Make sure you install the google apps when you flash cyanogen.

Does this completely void the warranty though? Just read it on the Cyanogen thread.
Regards.
Thanks added.

In theory you've already voided your warranty by flashing s-off bootloader

Wahey!! I'm now on Cyanogen, so bloody awesome!! I'm loving it, the fact that you could tewa the equalizer means bye bye to Dolby, I prefer using my personal tweak, everything is amazing, so far battery's running right, I hope it stays this way, thanks for your recommendation, where did you get your theme? I'm currently on the Lucid theme.
Thanks

Hi guys, I'm currently on a Sense based ROM but very interested in trying Cyanogen, the only thing holding me back is HTC Sense. I sync all my SMS with HTC Sense so that when I change between ROMs I won't lose my SMSes. Can you still use/sync to HTC Sense in Cyanogen? Thanks!

Wow! Is it really that much better?? So what exactly do gain or lose with Cyanogen comparing to Sense? I know Cyanogen is a lot cleaner/lighter and therefore faster than Sense; and you get DSP Manager but lose Dolby Mobile and SRS; you'll have ADW/Launcher Pro and of course lose the Sense UI...what else??

Most of the differences are in the kernel and not really the build. All 3rd party softwares can be installed on both Cyanogen and Sense....

I see. In that case, how does a custom Sense ROM + a custom kernel compare to a Cyanogen ROM with the same custom kernel? I guess the later would be quicker due to it's lighter?

Yes, I'd like to understand the differences as well.
Apart form some enthusiastic but not very informative "CM blows Sense to sh1t!" statements, I haven't seen any clear explanation of what the benefits of CM are? If it is simply the removal of Sense then that is a subjective improvement. Coming from a Magic (on CM) I know that many people over there spent their efforts getting Sense to work on that handset. Personally, I like Sense, it is clean and has a number of useful or flashy widgets and with the hardware of the DHD it is smooth and fast. I've rooted my DHD to Leedroid (mainly because I can't stop tinkering) but I'm holding from CM much as i liked it on the Magic because I just can't see the advantages..
Maybe someone could explain them for the more nooby amongst us?
Can you have more/less screens?
Can you organise you apps? Hide them?
Landscape home?
A list would be nice.

Personally, I like HTC Sense because it's clean and has uniformity as a UI. But if I have time spend 80% of my phone/device just customizing the UI again and again rather than using it then I would go for Cyanogen.

Yep. Just tried CM6 and whilst there is nothing wrong with it all, and it is possibly faster than stock, I just can't be ar$ed with tweaking all the settings to get the phone to have a bit of uniformity in its looks and operation.
Sense might be a bit bloated, but you don't need to use it and on the DHD it runs fine.
I think it is more of a aesthetic thing than anything else.

IMHO AdamG's OpenDesire 3.0.1 is the best right now until the official FROYO is released.

Nope, as a matter of fact when you first install it, it says welcome to Nexus One! I've been using it since he uploaded it and it is awesome, blazing fast and you can OC.
I personally like the Defrost rom by Richardtrip. very fast and clean.
Is IMHO very good with launcherpro. I hear that the cyanogen is bundled with fantastic features, but I dont plan to change from DeFrost until a OCUV comes out for the 2.2 sense

As i havent rooted my phone before and you seem like a helping guy (no i know where the guide is, i dont need help with that) How does uppdating the root work? do i need to reflash the new image every time a new uppdate comes?
Just download rom manager from the market once you root and it has a feature to check for updates on the rom your using. Does eveything automatic, easy as pie
Try set rom. If I want to leave Sense i'll use it without thinking.
I think I´m gonna ditch Sense. I´m fed up with it´s stupid dialer, the contacts widget and the slopoke SMS app.
Plus it´s kind of laggy. The only thing I like is the weather widget.
Any weather widgets out there? Nice ones I mean.
Thanks
P.S. I quite like the OpenDesire one.
The prettiest weather widget is fancy widget, do a search on here for the APK as its not on the market. It's exactly like the sense one, and opendesire 301 is by far the most complete vanilla android in my opinion

The best non-sense ROM is CyanogenMod 6.0.0 RC1 . It has so many functions that make the user experience so much better.

Cyanogen vs DeFrost vs OpenDesire

I wonder if this thread is legal or not XD I would like to see how many responds I will get for this stats =)
We love our Desire(s) and our Desire(s) won't be that great without these souls XD This is not a competition or as such. It is just to see how many people are actually using these custom roms and their favours on them
And this poll is just for CM/DF/OD's users If I have an option "None of them" then people will ask why don't I put other roms as well. The point is: There are so many of them out there and we all know where they come from.

Why? I would like to know the differences.
I have tried defrost and i like the defrost setup and cyanogen settings.
I like the fact that through defrost setup i can change kernel and mv and mhz
as well as tweaking status bar from settings.
Does opendesire and CM offer these things?
defrost is best
This is going to be very biased - everyone has there own opinion.
However, those that vote MUST have used all the ROM's otherwise how do they know that one is better than the other??????
None of the above - LeeDroid w/ brightsilence.

yup, DeFrost and OpenDesire are based on Cyanogenmod. Cyanogenmod is based on Google Android source, so then it must also be the same as the Android HTC sells? Start thinking people.
I tried Cyanogenmod at first and was very unhappy. Too few Desire users, too few Desire specific modifications, like up to date black theme. It also was full with bloatware (Amazon MP3, ADW Launcher) and I wasn't able to deinstall them with ADB completely. Don't know why. It also had some hick ups and consumed a lot of battery in my opinion, at least became the Desire hotter than usual.
Then I switched over to OpenDesire after I read that it is based on CM, thus also supports Bluetooth HID. Less bloatware, much slimmer and faster because no laggy ADW Launcher. Huge Userbase, with a up to date black theme with the circle battery mod. Overclocking features, etc. Perfect for me. And it runs fine at the moment and everything works as it should.
I haven't tried DeFrost yet, and won't plan to do it. The differences are marginal and to be honest, I don't really know what exactly the differences are. I just preferred OD because it seemed to me as if more users use it and AdamG releases more updates faster. I also decided to use OD because I have heard of it before several times, not so DeFrost.
However, OD and so should DeFrost, are much better than CM for us Desire users. Better optimized and more features for the Desire and much better support.
i tried them all in my search for a stock rom to compare it with my sense one.....and i must say that without saying cyanogen and defrost aren't good, OPENDESIRE is the best....very fast and very stable with customized options that do a lot of things....that's my opinion

[Q] A few questions about this MIUI rom?

also i was looking at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=915527 this rom in particular.

2. does this Miui rom have the weather animation like sense does when u turn your screen on.
3.is there a better Miui rom than this one. I've seen a few around but this one seems to have the most votes

For the most part it is faster than most sense based ROMs out there.
There is no native weather animations, but you can accomplish this by purchasing Beautiful Widgets and selecting the option to have weather animation
There is only one version of MIUI ROM, and the link you posted is the 'official' EVO version
In my opinion there are a lot of Pros and only one Con - being there is no 4G for it....yet.
Here are my favorite things:
The lockscreen
the music app
the drop down notification - and the fact that it scrolls
the menu settings
the dialer
contacts mod
built in screen capture
file explore to connect to my CPU over WiFi
The folders
The way you can put widgets on the homescreens
etc, etc
Make a Nand of your current set up and give MIUI a whirl. After a few days if it isn't for you go back to what you had before - it's a win/win for you!
Let me know if you need any help!

I suggest just nand backup your current setup and flash it yourself. If you don't like it, just restore your previous setup.
Does anyone know how to keep the stock browser from going back to mobile web pages?
As for stock web staying off mobile. I have no clue. But I personally use skyfire 3.0 u can set it to 3 different sets. Desktop android and somethinf else I think. Found this program to be faster than anything else.
Also thank you for the tips. I will be sure to test it tonight. If I nand backup would it restore my apps and do I have to wipe before I do nand back up.
Is there certian kernal thats better for the miui or is the zen kernal that comes with it good?

The Nand will make a back up of your apps, it I'd like a snap shot in time. After you do the backup then you would want to wipe everything.
As far as the kernel the stock one ids good, but feel free to try any other ASOP kernel. The thread for MIUI has a lot of good advice.

[Q] CyanogenMod 7 or LeeDroid 3.03(when it releases)

I've been with CM7 from the start but don't know whether to stick with it now that leedroid has come up with his 3.0.X rom with Gingerbread.
I'd like your opinion of which would be better.
i.e. Pros and Cons.
Pros
:I like the look of stock GB, is there a theme for this on leedroid 3?
Fast, 1100 on average quad.
Very customize-able.e.g. performance, display, interface settings.
Cons:
low internal space, because of no A2SD++
idk anything alse.
So please convince me to go over to leedroid or stick with CM7
I'm on CM 7 and I like it.
There are some possibilities to get more space for apps. The easy one is to use GingerVillain as this ROM is based on CM 7 and has A2SD+ support. The other way is to s-off your phone and flash CM 7 hboot. The you will have over 300 MB for your apps on internal memory.

Where can i find CM7 Hboot!
Thx
CM7 has A2SD+. Look in Kali's thread for the rom. As for pros and cons, I've seen a lot of people with GV and they are having issues, a fair amount of issues. Currently, from my experience anyway, I've had no issues at all from CM7.
I have had CM7 for a while because I customer keep going back to it. I usually try a rom when it gets updated massively but I still end up going back to it.
Personally it is a stable rom, the most stable AOSP rom out there. I can't say anything about GV. I tried it once and I didn't like what they did to it bit this was last year.

I agree CM7 is an awesome and very stable ROM, but since using it for a while, i feel like it is a bit too stock, so imight try out leedroid, but hate the hassle of restoring apps and settings.
I used GV before switching to CM 7 and personally I had no issues with it.
@johno168: From the "look & feel" point of view its really stock, but if you get used to the cm extensions (like quiet hours, different lockscreens, ...) you won't want to live without it imho.

Yeah, thats why i love CM so much it's esaily customizable and so stable at the same time. Maybe i'll stick to CM, but do you know of any "sense themes" like the whole sense look and stuff but on CM? or Maybe even a gingerbread theme for leedroid/sense?
thx for the help!
I'm afraid you won't get the whole sense look with all widgets
Launcher Pro PLUS has some similar widgets for Friends, Facebook, Twitter, Contacts and even GMail. I use Pure Messenger too which can be skinned sense like.

I meant with s2e
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
In Kali-'s CM7 Thread there is a link for instructions how to setup "Legacy App2SD" Perhaps this will work. Haven't tried it...

[Q] Whats the best custom ROM ay the moment?

Hi.
Quite new to all this, managed to root and install a new custom ROM on my phone yesterday (took me 8hrs all together)
after alot of reading and help from other members i decided to go for the ARHD ROM.
Is this a good choice? i know alot about computer programing, but Phones are new to me, im enjoying learning about my DHD
is this a good ROM, or are there better I realise that its down to personal preferance, but is this an up to date ROM.
Cheers,
Jamie
There is no best rom.Best rom for one user is maybe the worst for some other.Try couple of custom roms and decide which suits you best.

This is so true.. Just try other roms, and find which one suits your liking..
Also is there anyway to back up my home screen, and other screens settings with the widgets etc and all my app settings so i can just recover them back onto any new rom i install. it takes me hours to do this ater a factory reset or installing a new rom?
Cheers.

Use titanium back up for apps and settings. Never back up system data. Widgets can't be backed up unless the launcher has a backup setting.

I do not think it is better idea to back up your home/screen settings to use it across different ROMs. There is high chance that you will experience weird issues (every ROMs devs request to make a clean install if coming from other ROMs, importing backups would not make it clean anymore ).
As for the ROM, i think ARHD is a clever choice (i have settled to it after trying out all of the ROMs but RCMIX) if you want sense (or no-sense).
What if I asked you about the fastest ROM? I'm currently using LeeDroid bu I noticed that an OLDER Nexus One is much faster regarding the system. My only advantage is SuperFast IO and a bit faster 3D. CPU, even though it's set to 1,8 GHz Smoothass, is only half as efficient as the older 800MHz CPU in Nexus One.I read somewhere that it's a matter of picking a proper ROM, so which one would you suggest to me if I asked only for speed and responsiveness, and maybe battery life. Any Sense ROM is obviously out, but the problem is that I never used any other custom ROM. I would also like to retain my 2 way recording ability.
I used many roms, for me,
the best sense 2.1 rom is ARHD
best sense 3 rom is Virtuous Unity
ARHD is flawless and fast
VU has sense 3 but it has minor issues like Dolby is missing in music app. and its kernel doesnt have 2way recording support...
But i am stiil using VU with Lee s kernel
thanks, although Sense is not crucial, what I want is that my phone works as fast as possible and e'thing works as it should. I'm thinking about CM7 latest 7.1.0 RC1. People say camera is crappy but it can be changed.
I'd say give MIUI a try. It's really fast (faster then cm7 imo) and beautyful if you find the right theme in their theme manager
Furthermore it has way more features than cm7 but it isn't bloated like sense

Only drawback is it makes your phone look and behave like an iPhone, I'd recommend Hydr0G3nMOD it's cm7 based but with some trimming and tweaking and fly's and it's a massive ~72mb! download so that should tell you something about the bloat.
