[Q] Navigation Software - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello I was wondering what navigation software is the best? I live in australia and am travelling to brazil soon, how ever I would like something I wont get data charges with. I have seen a few, eg NDrive, Locations, etc, but was wondering what is XDA's recommendation?

I'm finding Locations to be overall the best. Good routing and you can get directions without a subscription. If you're going overseas the big bonus of Locations is that you can download the maps before you leave and buy a 1 month subscription for the country you are travelling to if you will be wanting voice guided navigation there. Works out quite a bit cheaper than paying outright for the package of a country you will only use for a short time.

o2 online or o2 store?

need some help and advice...Have been told o2 online is better to get the xda2 s from... can anyone tell me if online is better regarding customer care and all aspects, or going through the store for the contract and phone? thanks
I've been with O2 since 1991 and can tell you it's just the luck of the drawer whether you get excellent or totally useless customer service. As for O2 online, they didn't manage to get a single bill correct in the last twelve months and the only way you can get help and services that you really want, is if you already know the answer and push and push until you finally speak to someone who nows what they are talking about, re-affirm to them that the service or option IS available and they finally find it for you.
I've also got contracts with T-Mo and Orange and the story is the same there. Customer service with any of these companies when you are using these 'cutting edge' devices is just a matter of luck I'm afraid.
By the way, I got the O2 online deal because it was better at the time, it really does pay to look around.
02 online or store
thanks for that, I appreciate the help and advice. think I will have a thought or 2 and see. any outcome on the upgrade or did you do it?
o2 online or store
Sorry....I meant to say the update (rom)...
CS on O2 is bad who-ever you choose. O2 online have never got my bills right either. No GPRS use has been charged for (at-all) since November. I wont be paying any £100-odd bill that they send with all my GPRS from Nov--> in it!! They forgot to charge for my GPRS use while roaming as well.
Note that with o2 online personal tarriffs, you **cannot** send faxes. There is no upgrade for this other than to a business tarriff. High street personal tarriffs apparently do allow faxing.

online or store
Thanks, I've decided to be patient and wait till the store gets them in...really need to be able to just walk in and sort it out if there is a problem.
If you send texts go for an online Tariff, you get 400 more texts a month on a £19-£25 a month tariff from O2 online than O2 high street.
I think I'm the only person in the world who's never had a problem with O2 customer services! I even haggled them down to an XDA2s as a free upgrade
texts on online
The o2 online tarrif I was going to get had I think 500 texts and 500 off peak minutes, at the moment I'm on o2 online pay as you go, with 300 texts and very seldom reach that amount...If the texts are the reason for going online, could I get a fair amount on the o2 200 in the store? rollover for 6 months and double text and talk for 3 month.? The only thing I'm afraid of and concerned about is since I'm not real up on these things, I want minimum trouble with the phone, and should I need someone, want to sort it out as easily as possible with no hassel and without having to send it away. That's really the main reason I have considered going to the store. The main thing is comparing the 2 and going with the one that has more good points than bad. if that makes sense. Did I read right that you like the new rom version and have had no trouble with it? how do you like the phone overall? Finally, have you seen the website www.handango.com ? if you haven't...have a look.
Yeah I like the IIs, not perfect but I live with the niggles, Does seem better on the new ROM butI'm no expert. Main thing is just dumping all the O2 active stuff cos it's crap.
o2 active...
the o2 active is that like the games, and downloadable music? does it not work properly? how do you dump it?
It's just a custom today plig-inthat they install as part of the rom image.
I;m sure there are "correct" ways to remove it fully but I just change the today screen to a different one and remove the connections executable from windows\startup.
Does the trick for me.
double text and minutes
in stores currently available is dbl txt and mins for 6mths and handsets cheaper too
I recomend the store.
Generally o2 customer care is a waste of time, if you buy in the store, you`ll know the person you bought it from, and then know who to yell at when there is a cockup.
If you buy online, you`ll have no one to yell at. phoneing them is a waste of time aswell
o2 store it is
thanks, the store it will be. Now all I have to do is be patient enough to wait for the things to come in. Seems all the stores I know of don't have any and don't know when they will get them in. Oh well, the longer I wait the more money I will save...plus, hopefully the new ROM will be installed as well and I won't have to mess with that either. Thanks again

Taking my TP2 across Europe and Internet charging ???

Hi Folks,
I am intending to use my planned TP2 abroad(from UK), most likely Europe. I will most likely be signing up to VF. However I have just discovered than international data charges are horrendous. Something like <£5/ < 0.5MB/ £5- 5MB etc. It is quite convoluted. I thought innocently that this would be a part of my roaming deal - no way....
Thoughts, Experiences, advice???
Sam
Earlier in the year I went to Portugal on holiday, and kept my iPhone in flight mode for almost the whole week. I found that I did not really need internet access all that much, and when I did need to use it once, I went to an Internet Cafe and paid a couple of Euro's for around half an hour.
VF have free roaming at the moment, till the end of August, which is great for calls and texts but unfortunately it doesn't include data.
They have a few data plans though, if your looking for heavy usage aboard they are probably quite good value, just give CS a call they'll explain. (Make sure you call VF Business CS, they are very helpful!)
data roaming (as opposed to voice roaming) is handy only if you need to access the Internet on the move constantly
why not consider locating café with free wi-fi hotspots as an alternative? or are they hard to come by in europe?
Yes you are right. One could of course use Wifi with the TP2 !!!
I will also ring Business CS to enquire...
Thanks,
Sam

Switzerland PAYT SIM

Hi,
I'm off to Switzerland shortly on holiday and would really like to take my Desire and use my internet based applications (Endomondo, Picassa etc).
I'm currently with T-Mob who state that data transfer using their SIM cost £7.50 per MB, which I seriously do not want to risk.
Can anyone recommend a cheap (ish) Swiss based SIM card that has a competitive data rate. I've tried Swisscom, Sunrise and Orange, but they are either too expensive (one was 0.10CHF per 20KB!!!) or it doesn't state the cost.
I've noticed there is a Migros shop nearby who sell SIM but they also don't state the data rates.
My fall back plan is to disable data on the phone and let GPS record everything but then only upload when I find a free wifi zone.
Leaving on Sunday so would ideally like to find the answer beforehand.
Really appreciate any help / advice
I can recommend
- Sunrise Prepaid SIM Card
- Sunrise surf
www1.sunrise.ch/Angebot/Sunrise-go-dayflat-pul3bAqFI.obkAAAEkYZFQzDCg-Sunrise-Residential-Site-WFS-de_CH-CHF.html
You will pay 20CHF first and this is directly your prepaid money you can use. For the "Sunrise surf" option you pay 7.50CHF/Month and you have 250MB included.
Best ist if you go to a sunrise shop (Zürich Airport or somewhere else maps.sunrise.ch/shopfinder.php?lang=de&objID=Address&val1=8000&val2=&val3=&val4=) and tell them you want those two things and they will arrange that.
have fun in Switzerland,
Dave

This is incorrect. Since you are on T-Mob UK, you can just get one of their Euro Internet Boosters (see here). According to the FAQ, it is valid in Switzerland.
It's probably more expensive than a local PAYG solution (£10 for 50mb), but it is much better than £7.50 per MB. I'd suggest that you keep mobile internet turned off though unless you actively want to use it to keep the usage down.

Dave
These are both really useful thanks. I may leave the data off until I can find a sunrise shop. If there isn't one local I'll opt for the T-Mob £10 solution. I've just spoken to them and apparently the phone will prompt me to purchase either of the 3 packages. Makes it quite simple and certainly cheaper than my current charges.
Thank again.

I can confirm that it does work. When I went to France a couple of months ago, I was unable to get email etc on the phone until I'd opened up a web browser and "bought" a Euro Booster.

GPS Navigation help

I am thinking to buy a navigation system for my car, but before I buy it I though to ask is there any good navigation program worth buying for touch pro 2?
I see that many people have problems with wvga and older navigation software such as tomtom etc.
So is there any software 100% compatible with tp2 and is it worth buying it instead of car navigation system.
Thank you
If you are on Sprint, the Sprint navigation works perfect IMO. I also use google for navigation.
I forgot to add that I don't have data plan anymore, so I will be looking at something as tomtom.
I've been using CoPilot Live for several years -- it's pretty damn good, especially considering its price. They have frequent map updates, and promise quick (45 days, IIRC) turnaround on any map updates you submit.
I've also tried Navigon -- their maps are pretty good, but I haven't been able to get the turn-by-turn directions to work, not that I've spent a lot of time trying.
Hey 3waygeek, thank you for the tip.
I went to copilot site and for tp2 gives me 2 options:
CoPilot Live 7 North America $29.99
CoPilot Live 8, North America Maps $29.99
So which do I need ( I hope not both)
Thank you
I'd go for CoPilot Live 8 -- it's the most recent version, and the one I've been using the last year or so.
Note that CoPilot can use a data connection to get live traffic updates; if you don't want to use data, you should be able to turn the traffic update capability off. You may also want to turn off the AGPS; it tends to open a data connection when you use GPS.

[Q] European Prepaid plans - Which is the Best?

I am planning a trip to England this summer and possibly France as well. One of the main reasons I purchased the GSM Galaxy Nexus was the pentaband radio and it's ability to work everywhere.
What I would like to know is what plans are you guys (and I think I have seen one lady here as well) who are in Europe are using. I will be looking for a plan that would be good for up to 2 weeks, I don't really care about having too many minutes or text messages but Data is a must. I estimate 2GB of data use when traveling, knowing I will be able to use a lot of hot spots too. Not living there I do not know what the regional carriers reputations are, who has the fastest network etc.
I have been doing a little research and it looks like most carriers offer good prepaid sim only plans, I could just use some local knowledge for this.
Thanks in advance...

I'm from Texas and just moved to the UK... I'm sure you will find many great pay&go sim cards..... I prefer o2.... just go to the web site or shop and get a sim... you can bolt on as much data as you need and the calling/sms start around 15 pounds.....
I would recommend Three whilst in the UK if you need lots of data. Their coverage is excellent in most places for 3g/HSPA+ I get 5-7meg in most places I go. Other UK networks aren't that great for data speed.
Go to https://www.three.co.uk/Support/Free_SIM/Order for a free pay and go SIM.
A £15 add on gets you UNLIMITED DATA, 300mins to UK landlines and any UK mobile network, and 3000 texts for 30 days.
They have other add ons too(make sure to select pay as you go phone). http://www.three.co.uk/Discover/Phones/Get_better_value_with_an_Add_on
It's free to receive incoming calls on any UK mobile network by the way. If you go to France you would be best off finding a SIM card for a french network too as it will cost you to receive calls to a UK SIM card whilst outside the UK.
Hope this helps.
Rik.

It also depends on where you're going... 'Europe' is a mish-mash of different countries with different carriers, plans and systems.
If you're travelling to multiple European countries on your visit, and especially if you don't want to change your phone number all of the time, it may just make sense to get a Vodafone pre paid SIM.
Whilst Vodafone aren't the least expensive, they are the most expansive across Europe. Dealing with one company can often just be simpler.
If you get a Vodafone pre paid SIM and load on the "Passport" service you can then buy a data bundle that will work pretty much across Europe at a lower rate (but still somewhat expensive - expect around €10 for 25MB). Casual roaming data rates can be as high as €10 per *single* MB.
I don't think you'll get this flexibility on another carrier but I could be wrong.
Finally... price also depends on where you get your SIM card from in the first instance. With this approach you only buy one SIM and the country where you buy it establishes the price you pay across Europe. If you purchase in Turkey or Greece (for example), you will pay less than if you purchase in the UK or Netherlands (per min and per MB typically).
Edit: Here's an old article... http://www.tracyandmatt.co.uk/blogs/index.php/cheaper-data-roaming-with-vodafone
Thanks for the replies. It is surprisingly overwhelming looking at how many prepaid options there actually are in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. In the States prepaid sims are almost non existant, and when you do find some service that offers it Data is super expensive.
Here is another question. I saw that the 3 Mobile prepaid sims do not allow for tethering. Has anyone with a GN been able to get this to work, or will I have to pay for hotel wifi the whole time? I haven't seen if O2 blocks this, I will have to look into that as well.
Most don't seem to allow tethering on pre pay but they don't disable the option on your phone either(they just stick it in their terms). I think you'll be OK. The worst they can probably do is take off pre paid credit if they found out.
